India head to Johannesburg with a golden opportunity to seal their first-ever Test series win in South Africa while the hosts will hope to use the conditions in their favour to level up the scores.

Overview

South Africa vs India, second Test
New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg
January 3-7, 10:00 am local time

South Africa will have a lot to ponder after succumbing to a heavy defeat against the visitors at their fortress in Centurion. India outclassed them in all three departments of the game. They have been dealt a further blow with the sudden retirement of Quinton de Kock from Test cricket, with Kyle Verreynne set to replace him in the side and don the gloves. Duanne Olivier could also feature in the side in place of either Wiaan Mulder or Marco Jansen to add some further firepower in the bowling department. With pace and bounce on offer aplenty in Johannesburg, South Africa will hope to make full use of the conditions on offer.

India had a brilliant start to their tour of South Africa, considered by many as their final frontier. Having yet to win a series there, India could not have hoped for a better start and will aim to clinch a historic series victory at the Wanderers. They return to the venue where they clinched a famous victory in 2018 which started the cycle of winning overseas for the current unit. Coming on the back of a professional display, the visitors are unlikely to tamper with their team combination in the second Test.

Remember the last time

On the back of a brilliant start by their openers, with KL Rahul smashing a ton, India posted a competitive score of 327 runs on the board. Mohammad Shami then took a five-for, as the visitors bowled out South Africa for 197.

The Indian batters then chipped in despite some uneven bounce on the pitch to aggregate 174 runs setting South Africa a tough target of 305 runs. Despite Dean Elgar's brilliant knock of 77, he could not get much support from the other end as South Africa were skittled out for 191, losing the contest by 113 runs.

It was an efficient performance from the Indian team who clinched the victory despite day two being completely washed off, going 1-0 up in the series.

What they said

Dean Elgar (South Africa captain): "Our batters let us down. I'd say the batting was the difference between the two sides. We'll have a little sit-down with myself and the management to strategise. Didn't do a lot of wrong things. Not all doom and gloom for us. We thrive under pressure which is a positive for us."

Virat Kohli (India captain): "Got off to the perfect start. Have to understand one day was washed out - shows how well we played. It's always a difficult place to play against SA (Centurion). The discipline that the batters showed. Winning the toss, batting first overseas is a tough challenge. Credit to Mayank and KL for the way they set it up. We knew we were in pole position with anything over 300-320. Knew the bowlers will do the job."

Indian bowlers always get these wickets that's why they have been so good lately.

They are decent bowlers but these pitches have made them the world beaters.

You're half-correct. Indian bowlers are world beater (agree with you!) but they have performed on all kinds of pitches. ;-)

Indian bowlers will get lot of help , SA needs to win Toss here , otherwise they will lose the game.

Kohli has suffered back spasms and is out of the second Test.

KL Rahul has won the toss and opted to bat first.

Teams:

India - Rahul, Agarwal, Pujara, Rahane, Vihari, Pant, Ashwin, Thakur, Bumrah, Shami, Siraj

South Africa - Elgar, Markram, van der Dussen, Petersen, Bavuma, Verreynne, Jansen, Maharaj, Rabada, Olivier, Ngidi

Morethan batting kohli captaincy required in this match. Hope vihari makes some runs, as he is in good form playing for india A.

We've never lost a test at Jo'burg. Long may it continue!

No Kohli. No Rohit. Someone who wasn’t even sure of his place till 2 series back is now captain. What is happening lol

Signs of Kohlis body struggling to match his Fitness and Diet regime. Age, time and workload takes a toll on the body. Even professional boxers have to change their training regimen and diets as they enter their 30's

Now this is some even contest.
We are playing without likes Kohli, Rohit, Gill and Jadeja. Our middle order is out of form since ages.
It will be a great thing if we manage to win the match with this team 👌

I think we should have bowled first and caught South Africa with a low score...

I think this is Vihari's first test since that SCG blockathon.

A vegan diet is terrible for a professional athlete in their thirties, especially for somebody as much pressure as Kohli. I don't think Kohli will last for more than 2 years regardless of format.

It will be big pressure on India if Rahul gets out cheaply...

And we are away, courtesy 2 4s from Mayank in 3 balls.

Innocuous stuff from both the SA pacers. Struggling to believe that this is the same Rabbada who was in top form from 2015-17 and the same Olivier who demolished the Pakistani batsmen with bouncers in 2019

I thought Olivier was a genuine fast bowler? He is bowling at 124 kph? It almost looked like an attempted slow ball given his exaggerated body movement. Mayank had to wait and wait.

Fail to understand SA tactics this series. This is now the second low pace low bounce flat wicket they have given too the Indians. India has an all conditions bowling attack wheras SA best chance was to prepare a fast green top bouncy wicket against the Indians

Is this flat pitch? Or was in last test ? Lol

If they did that we'll demolish them.

I thought it was out for a second. Pitch has a lot of life. JUst has to pitch on a length at decent clip. Even 130 kph would do.

Good calls by the debutante umpire so far.

Mike Haysman has already started to sook about the pitch.

Give some credit to batsmen. If he had chased any one of those deliveries he would have been in the shed.

This Indian side is susceptible to quality swing. Not so much against bouncers. A reason why they do better in OZ.

Any other batting would have lost 2-3 wickets by now.

Wanderers is at its fastest by day 2. Also, there is no other venue where you get more swing and seam. This is not a venue for big runs though. Need to score fast here.

If true, augurs well for us.

We desperately need our 2 senior most batsmen to fire in this test. May not be big hundreds but 50s at least.

How can someone regressed like pujara but still playing at 3 for country like india . really embarassing for all of us

Kudos to our bowlers who not only take wickets in all conditions but sometimes make important runs too down the order.

As for our batsmen less said the better.

Both batters playing tuk tuk game ,no runs whatsoever . pathetic approch .

They are decent bowlers but these pitches have made them the world beaters.

Had the wickets been flat, you people would have been complaining that The BCCI always gets flat wickets when they tour overseas, thats the reason how their average batters could score more runs!!! Jealousy has no cure.

Looks to be a weak batting line up for India. Shreyas should have been played in place of Vihari.Hopefully Ind gets 250 with this line up

Our batting line-up is minnow level.
