"Mike Haysman doing the pitch. Says that the groudsman has left "twice as much" grass on as for any previous Test"

Hmm...

Pitch is green. Sri Lanka to get us out for not much, but then crumble as well.

This Kumara guy looks more threatening than Chameera. Where has he been? He's rushing our batsmen.

gap between bat and pad way too big

the cliche technical mistake seen on batsmans when they are thoroughly off

Would have been all out by now had Mathews lost the toss.

Kumara is built like a truck. There's something about this guy. He seems. To be bowling a heavy ball. The ball that got rid of JP got big on him. I'm impressed.

Amla really Struggling for form recently. Average dropped below 50 and not been able to even get starts, let alone convert them.

Worrying Signs for S.A. with test batting backbone in A.B., Kallis already not playing and now Amla having issues.

Haven't seen much of Kumara before, he's got very little domestic experience. Seems highly rated enough to be fast-tracked from the U19s to the national team.

Good crowd in it seems.

Oh dear, that's a poor drop.

Herath is such a class act. Snares the wicket of the skipper.

I love Herath, makes me so happy seeing a tubby guy waddling in and making top players look silly.

It was terrible batting from Faf though, he didn't get his foot or head anywhere near the ball and tried to smash a ball that was miles away from him. Looked like a tailender slogging at the end of an innings.

Herath is now the second highest all-time wicket-taker for Sri Lanka in Tests. Now has 355 wickets, tying with Chaminda Vaas.

Too short from Kumara. This partnership is looking dangerous for Sri Lanka.

Another 50 runs with these two will go a long way...

Lanka need wickets here , SA tail can do damage , Philander is no mug with the bat

QdK is a crucial player down the order.
300 on this wicket will be very good. Anything above that would be unattainable.

I can't wait to see him bat with AB down the order. It should be entertaining.
He has change the complexion of this innings. Yes SA are 247/5 but we should take into account they were put to bat.

Sri Lanka fell into a similar trap to NZ. This pitch is a tad slow. Tomorrow it should harden and quicken up under a hot blue sky.

Hearath is on 355 wickets so far , he probably would be targetting 400 test wickets before hanging his boots

Its time that D Kock gives up gloves in Test Matches and plays as specialist batsman. He can keep in OD , That would reduce his workload a bit

91 partnership from 117 deliveries. With de Kock contributing 55 from 67 balls.
AB waar's jy?

Yah, it will be nice to see both batting together. One session will be enough to take the game away if both are batting together.

NO!, not yet. SA's fragile batting unit can't afford to carry a passenger of a wicketkeeper. Circumstances dictate that QdK should keep

Hehe, I'm having flashbacks of the WC where everybody overhyped him and he lost form completely at the start of the WC. Think he came back from injury or something.

He was coming back from a long injury lay off.
Even played with an ankle brace

Elgar reminds me of Gary Kirsten's tenacity.
He's never gonna be a neutrals favorite, but he's got character to be admired.

I think qdk is the next superstar in the mould of AB,kohli who are aggressive players and can dominate all formats

Far superior version of warner .i hope.he doesnt struggle in asia like warnet

He's a perfect high impact batsman lower down the order very similar to gilly

The way he plays he will always give you chances but has immense ability to takes the game way from you so quickly

Its better to leave him their

I think you will soon see a new WK in Test.

it will depend on two aspects
1) Amla and AB's impending retirements
2) How QdK's body copes with the rigours of keeping in three different formats. And of course the damn IPL will crowd his schedule. I hope he doesn't jeopardize his fitness a la de Villiers

I do not think it is possible for any WK to keep in all formats and then play 20 20 Leagues .

Keeping is not easy , you need to bend and get up 6 times in each over throughout.

Its always better to have a few alternates ready , and best way to prepare alternate is to make them play a few games.

Philander does not walk in , he is protected by a nightwatchman , that shows SA rate him highly with bat as well.

SA are lucky to have such a gun batsman emerge prior to ABD's retirement, love watching him bat. I just hope he loses form only for our series :D

These SL hacks can't even score 350 by playing attritional cricket

Amla seems out of form for a while now!!!

He will be 33 in a month why would he retire? He should just play all test matches, important odi's and T20 wc's and IPL.

Qdk is a superstar, he might not get the same fanfare as ABD here in India (some like him more than Kohli) but all clubs would love to poach him when the next auction/ transfer window is open.

we will cross that bridge when we get to it.
For now he keeps, finish and klaar

A career-best 129 by Dean Elgar added to a typical free-flowing Quinton de Kock innings, helped the Standard Bank Proteas seize the initiative during the latter part of the opening day of the second Sunfoil Test against Sri Lanka at PPC Newlands in Cape Town on Monday.
The hosts reached stumps on 297/6 on a day when batting seemed more difficult than bowling, with the tourists winning the toss and opting to field first.

They made inroads throughout, but struggled to claim the key wicket of Elgar until late in the day and only after the plucky left-hander had already batted for just over six hours, faced 230 balls and struck 15 fours.

He proved to be the rock for the South Africans as he notched up the sixth career century for his country and surpassed his previous best 127 made against Australia in Perth during November.

Along with de Kock, the pair shared in a 103-run, sixth wicket stand that helped shift control of the game after their side had looked in a bit of trouble on 159/5 at a stage just after lunch.

De Kock, who passed 1000 Tests along the way, ended the day unbeaten on 68 (90 balls, 7 fours), while Elgar eventually fell just under half-an-hour before the close, having watched five of his fellow top-order colleagues fall across him.

Stephen Cook and JP Duminy both fell for ducks, while there were starts for Hashim Amla (29) and captain Faf du Plessis (38). Temba Bavuma made 10.

There was also one crucial reprieve for De Kock when he was on 58 and the total 270/5.

He was given out leg before wicket by umpire Aleem Dar, but reviewed the decision - more in hope rather than in confidence - and it proved a useful gamble as ball-tracker showed the delivery sliding down leg side.

Nightwatchman Kyle Abbott was unbeaten on an impressive 16 by the close, while Lahiru Kumara was the pick of the bowlers was 3/86.
