South Africa defeat Sri Lanka by 282 runs to win the 2nd Test

Kuamara guy was hitting 140s constantly, his slow ball is low 130s and high 120s and not 115km/h slow ball. Got tired at the end and sprayed all over. He is only like 19, how can he get tired so quickly ? Looked very strong and not malnourished like every other SL fast bowler when they made their debut. If Chameera had his physical appearance he'd be bowling at high 150s. Didn't watch most of the match but SL definitely didn't capitalize on the pitch that was gifted to them.

Qdk establishing himself as one of the best batters across all formats.

SA's best batsmen on current form across formats.

Kumara picked up a wicket for every initial in his name, nice work.

Unfortunately we have let them score about 200 too many.

South Africa 392 (116.0 ov)
Sri Lanka

Must be a flat deck. Surely.

Correction - 6 down now ! Poor shot from Chandimal and Rabada has his fourth wicket.

Another set of tourists doing poorly

India or Pakistan would have put on a fight, but half SL batsmen throw away wickets and the bowling is quite poor as well. Let SA score at least 150 runs more. SL can only beat Zimbabwe and Bangladesh away.

Rabada the second youngest SA cricketer to take 50 Test wickets

150 test wickets for big Vernon Philander

Should have enforced the follow on. SL would have still lost by 50 runs.

CSA can't afford to miss out on two full days of ticket sales and broadcasting related revenue. Plus our middle order needs time in the middle. Amla and Bavuma could use some pressure free batting here.

No ways Sri Lanka lasts days 4 and 5 on a pitch that's already taking turn and reverse

KAGISO RABADA claimed his 50th Test wicket and Vernon Philander his 150th as the Standard Bank Proteas took complete control against Sri Lanka after two days of the second Sunfoil Test at PPC Newlands in Cape Town on Tuesday.

The pair shared eight wickets between them to help blast the tourists out for 110 in reply to the hosts’ 392, which they got thanks to Quinton de Kock’s third career century.

The young wicketkeeper struck an impressive 101 (124 balls, 11 fours) that enabled South Africa to add 95 for the final four wickets, before they then replied with an untroubled 35/0 in their second innings – a lead of 317 – to leave the Sri Lankans with plenty to do in order to avoid a series defeat.

It was a totally dominant day for the home side, who started out on 297/6. Apart from losing nightwatchman Kyle Abbott (16) to Rangana Herath (2/57) to the eighth ball of the day, it was one-way traffic thereafter.

De Kock added 33 and 40 with Philander (20) and Keshav Maharaj (32 not out) for the eighth and ninth wickets respectively, with the latter pair, as well as Rabada (eight) all falling to the pace of teenager Lahiru Kumara, who finished with 6/122.

Rabada then go stuck into the Sri Lankan top and middle order as he claimed 4/37 – his wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne (24) taking him to 50 wickets in just his 13th Test match.

Philander, meanwhile, took 4/27 – his 150th scalp being that of Suranga Lakmal (0) as the South African bowlers were rewarded for their discipline and aided by some poor shot selection by their opponents, who lost their last nine wickets for 54 runs to be bowled out in 43 overs.

Upul Tharanga top scored with an unbeaten 26, while Keshav Maharaj chipped in with 2/32.

Dean Elgar (19) and Stephen Cook (15) scored freely in the 11 overs they faced to leave the Proteas in the driving seat.

I'm surprised no one mentions the fact that our numbers 1-5 are over the age of 30 with the exception of Elgar. ABDV himself isn't exactly a youngster. It's an aging top order with a life expectancy of 3 years at most. Lots of rebuilding post 2019 world cup.

AB, Amla and co will be on their last legs during WC 2019. Their best chance was to win during 2015 but they choked again. Honestly SA will prob not win the 2019 WC either because I feel like most of the current XI in LOIs will be done and dusted by then. If SA has any chance to win an upcoming ICC event, it is the CT 2017 later this year. Their only real opponent will be England.

Sri Lanka's fast bowling attack is better than Pakistan's.

This Kumara guy is something special, he will go a long way in test cricket.

Fair to say that SL are minnows now. In all forms. If not now will definitely be once Herath calls it a day. Which I reckon would probably be this year don't see him lasting for too long with all the fitness issues. The seniors have been carrying this side for yonks but soon there won't be anyone to hide behind.

South Africa 392 & 162/5 (41.2 ov)
Sri Lanka 110

South Africa lead by 444 runs with 5 wickets remaining

SA will at least need 500 here to put the pressure back on SL

Wait, are you saying the pressure isn't already on them. You don't seriously expect them to chase this down.

Why not, Pakistan came within touching distance of a 500 run target at the Gabba 2 weeks back. SL_Fan is right in saying that SA needs atleast a 500 to put pressure back on Sri Lanka.

Lanka need 507 , right now they are at 17/1.
Actually this was a quite a low scoring match if you take out QDK and Cook inning.

VERNON PHILANDER and Kagiso Rabada continued the hatchet job they started in the Sri Lanka first innings as the Standard Bank Proteas closed in on a series-clinching victory at the close of the third day in the second Sunfoil Test match at PPC Newlands on Wednesday.

The pair shared eight wickets between them in the first innings and collected another two apiece in the second as the visitors struggled to 130/4 at the close with their two senior batsmen, Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal doing their best to hold the fort.

Faf du Plessis had set them an improbable victory target of 507 which is almost 100 runs more than the highest successful fourth innings runs chase ever and has indeed only been bettered once as a fourth innings total.

That was the 654/5 that England made in the notorious drawn timeless test at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in 1939. Conditions were rather different then with the match lasting 10 days in total.

In fairness to Sri Lanka they had one of their better days of the series to date as they prevented the Proteas from running away in their second innings. They took 4/101 in the morning session and a further 3/88 between lunch and tea before Du Plessis applied the declaration. There was also a lot more application to their batting in the second innings with the bowlers having to work harder for success.

Dean Elgar followed his first innings century with top score of 55 (91 balls, 7 fours) and also shared yet another half-century stand with Stephen Cook. If there was a disappointment for the Proteas it was the fact that the three batsmen most in need of runs – Hashim Amla, JP Duminy and Temba Bavuma – did not getting going with Amla and Bavuma both failing to score. Amla got an excellent delivery from Suranga Lakmal as did Duminy while Bavuma suffered an unlucky run out as his bat bounced although he had part of it across the line.

Lakmal once again carried the Sri Lanka attack as he has done for most of the series to date. He now has 17 victims from four innings which is twice as many as any of his colleagues.

Lahiru Kumara, the bowling hero of the first innings, could not find his length second time around although he did claim the scalp of Quinton de Kock, which is probably the most prized in the Proteas line-up at the moment.

Sri Lanka need a further 377 for victory but in reality the Proteas only need two more wickets to break into the tail and wrap proceedings up.

Remember someone called him overrated after the first test

Please switch on the tv and watch the the kid doing all the fun

RABADA ROUTS REMAINING SRI LANKAN RESISTANCE

Thursday, 05 January 2017

KAGISO RABADA took 4/33 in 7 overs in his opening spell of the day to make short work of Sri Lankan resistance on the fourth morning of the second Sunfoil Test match at PPC Newlands on Thursday.

His four wickets included the last three specialist Sri Lankan batsmen, one of whom, Angelo Mathews, made the top score of 49 as the visitors crumbled to 224 all out to lose the match by a massive 282 runs.

The Standard Bank Proteas thus clinched the three-match series 2-0 and will be aiming for a clean sweep in the final match starting at the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium next Thursday.

Rabada finished with an innings return of 6/55 in 17 overs – the fifth occasion on which he has taken five or more wickets in an innings – and his second match return of 10 or more wickets, finishing with figures of 10/92 on this occasion. This earned him the Sunfoil Man of the Match award, the third time he has been honoured in this way.

He now has a total of 58 wickets from his 13 Test matches with a phenomenal strike rate of 37.1 and an average of 22.01. He has taken 41 wickets in his 7 home Test matches and this is effectively 6 as he did not bowl in the weather-disrupted game against New Zealand at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead last year.

Vernon Philander and Keshav Maharaj rounded off the victory with a wicket apiece, Philander finishing with 7 wickets in the match.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) congratulated the Proteas on their Test Series victory.

“Congratulations to our Proteas on yet another fine series victory,” commented CSA Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat. “It has been wonderful to see them continue their winning ways. It bodes well for their forthcoming tours to New Zealand and England.

“They are now back among the top three sides in Test match cricket and on target to challenge for the No. 1 ranking over the next 12 months.

“It has been an excellent first series for Faf du Plessis as the permanent Test captain and he, Russell Domingo and all the players and team management are to be congratulated on winning another series. Their teamwork and enjoyment is shining through as does the enjoyment they are bringing to the nation.

“I would also once again like to applaud our fans in the Western Cape for the tremendous support they have given the Proteas at this iconic Test venue. New Year at Newlands remains one of the great events in world cricket,” concluded Mr. Lorgat.

Excited to see Rabada in England.

Gonna wreak havoc especially if the ball is swinging.

I feel really bad to see Mathews stuck with this lot

Guy must wish he'd been born five years earlier

Which is why losing Rossouw will hurt.

Wasted time on Cook when Amla could have opened and Rossouw played in the middle order

If they win they will have won in their last three tours in England and Australia

Doubt that's ever happened!

Maybe 80s Windies but I think Aus and Eng snuck some draws

South Africa is a funny team. They are excellent away but not so much at home against non asian teams.

South Africa still hasn't beaten Australia at home even once since their readmission. That's a very surprising stat. Even England are neck to neck with them in win loss ratio since the dawn of the millennium.

If ever a team deserved to be number one in tests it is SA. They win both home and abroad.

South Africa select their A players for the 3rd test and will still beat this team, at worst will tie the match.
