PROTEAS TOUR TO SRI LANKA CONFIRMED

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) is pleased to confirm the Proteas men’s outbound tour to Sri Lanka from 02 to 14 September. It will consist of three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 internationals, all played at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo.

The last time South Africa played a white-ball series in Sri Lanka was in 2018 where they won the five-match ODI series 3-2 and the hosts walked away with the one-off T20 match victory.

“We are delighted to have another tour confirmed for the Proteas men’s team with the ICC T20 World Cup just around the corner,” commented CSA Acting CEO, Pholetsi Moseki. “Playing against quality opposition in the sub-continent is the best way for our team to prepare for this event and we are grateful to Sri Lanka Cricket for accommodating us during this time of the year where schedules are highly condensed.

“With an ICC white-ball world event in each year of the next three, game time is golden for every team and we are looking forward to watching our team play as they continue to add to the building blocks of their 2021 T20 World Cup preparation.”

SL should win this easily if some of their first choice players are back. SA is not the same force anymore.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is pleased to announce the Proteas men’s One-Day International (ODI) and T20 International squads that will travel to Sri Lanka for a six-match tour that comprises three ODI and three T20I matches. The fixtures will be played from 02 to 14 September in Colombo.

Dwaine Pretorius returns to both squads after being forced to miss out on the West Indies and Ireland tours due to medical reasons.

Junior Dala has been included in the ODI squad and Lungi Ngidi will miss the ODI series due to personal reasons. He will join the team in time for the T20 series.

Quinton de Kock has been rested from the ODI team. David Miller sustained a hamstring injury during the final T20 against Ireland and will miss the ODI series while his progress is being monitored. Both have been marked to make their return to play in the T20 series.

The ODI squad will travel to Sri Lanka first, followed by the T20 players.

CSA Convenor of Selectors, Victor Mpitsang, said:

“The Selection Panel is pleased to announce the squads that will go to Sri Lanka at the end of this month. After the white-ball teams’ successes in the West Indies and Ireland, we are excited to have them back in action and continuing their preparation for the ICC T20 World Cup later this year.

“With the many COVID-19-induced bio-bubbles that the touring squads have had to endure, it is pleasing to have the majority of our players available for action and we look forward to watching them in the very different conditions of Sri Lanka.

“I would like to wish Temba Bavuma and Mark Boucher all the best for what we know will be a challenging tour, but we have every confidence in the squads selected and the leadership behind them.”

The South African contingent for the limited over series in Sri Lanka arrived on the island yesterday, with all players and support staff testing negative for Covid-19.

All players and support staff members of the visiting South African team were tested on their arrival on Thursday, it is learnt. The next PCR tests for the visiting team will be conducted on 29th September.

Temba Bavuma will captain the South African team.

Two doctors from the Sri Lanka Army have been assigned to overlook Covid-related issues and tests during their 20-day stay in Sri Lanka. The visitors too have brought their own physician.

Both teams are staying in the same hotel. The members of the home team also gave their PCR tests on Wednesday and all returned negative results.

The three day-night ODIS (September 2, 4 and 7) and the T20IS (September 10, 12 & 14) will be played at R. Premadasa Stadium behind closed doors.

Sri Lanka’s batting coach Grant Flower, who had to miss the last series against India, has returned. The Zimbabwe-born Flower tested positive for Covid-19 after returning from England and had to be isolated.

Another support staff member G. T. Niroshan too was dropped for the same reason for the India series. He was replaced by Prad Navaratnam, who will continue to be with the team for the series against South Africa.

SA team might be disjointed with all the SJN stuff going on. Could be a big reason why they have always buckled under pressure.

Currently South Africa are 159-1
Markram is currently on 95 runs, tuned in about 20 mins ago, looking like a great game so far.

Markram took the run option and gets out for 96 runs. Amazing catch by Sri Lankan fielder.

South Africa 201/2 from 38 overs, need another 100 off the last 12.

Verreynne and van der Dussen at the crease.

Bavuma was retired hurt during the game, but according to commentators, if he is needed he will come back into the game

232-3 south africa and van der dussen brings up his 50...he has looked solid so far and played some lovely reverse sweep shots

Seems like Markram has become an all-rounder these days. Top knock with bat today.

Would have been a privilege watching Van der dussen bat alongside AB de Villiers in the ODI team. So consistent and bats like a rock, Van der dussen.

South Africa need 32 from 12 balls, appears they have messed up this chase after the dismissal of van der Dussen.

They needed 48 from 30 at one stage.

275 + chases are near impossible to chase in Lanka. It's not like India where pitches actually become better under lights at times and the ball pings off the bat.

Some really good death bowling by Srl but, at the same time SA’s finish was extremely mediocre after a decent initial base.

Sri Lanka (300/9) beat South Africa (286/6) by 14 runs.

Good comeback in the last 5 overs by the Sri Lankan bowlers.

Congratz to sri lanka on the win. Not an easy pitch to bat on with big boundaries...sri lanka also bowled well and held their nerves even when it looked like south africa would win

Van der dussen wicket was the turning point that being said great game of cricket gotta feel for south africa

Brilliant bowling at death from Sri Lanka helped them restrict the Proteas on 286/6, clinching a 14-run victory in the first ODI in Colombo. Earlier, a stunning century from Avishka Fernando had powered them to 300/9.

Chasing 301, South Africa got off to a good start with their openers Janneman Malan and Aiden Markram providing a solid foundation. But the visitors lost Malan's wicket – trapped in front for 23 by Wanindu Hasaranga – with their score reading 49/1 after 10 overs.

But Markram remained unperturbed as he kept batting with grit. He brought up his third ODI fifty with a straight six, reaching the mark in 49 balls. The Sri Lanka bowlers toiled in vain but Markram and Temba Bavuma took full advantage of the attack. Unfortunately, Bavuma had to retire hurt after the 28th over on 38 as he was hit on the thumb by a throw and was taken off the field for further assessment.

Praveen Jayawickrama finally was able to get the elusive breakthrough for the hosts when he dismissed Markram for 96, breaking the century stand for the second wicket. However, the visitors continued in the same vein with Rassie van der Dussen and Kyle Verreynne sharing a solid 43-run stand. Verreynne fell soon after the Proteas went past the 200-run mark, trapped by Akila Dananjaya for 12. Van der Dussen refused to budge and patiently stitched a solid half-century. He fell to Dananjaya with South Africa still needing 41 runs in the last 4.1 overs.

It should have been easy enough for South Africa with plenty of wickets in hand but the host bowlers were persistent, cutting off the flow of runs and choking the scoring rate at death. Only 14 runs came off in the next three overs. In the end, 27 runs in the final over was too much for the Proteas and they could only manage to score 286/6 in 50 overs; Sri Lanka winning by 14 runs.

Earlier, the hosts won the toss and elected to bat. Avishka Fernando and Minod Bhanuka opened the batting for the hosts while Kagiso Rabada, with the shiny new ball in hand, bowled the first over.

The Sri Lanka openers dealt with the South Africa attack with confidence and laid a solid foundation for the side. To keep the Sri Lanka batters in check, Bavuma introduced spinner Keshav Maharaj in the seventh over. By the end of the Powerplay, the hosts had posted 50/0 on the scoreboard.

A couple of overs later, the introduction of part-time bowler, Markram, worked in South Africa's favour as he broke the solid opening stand. Bhanuka looked to slog-sweep Markram's delivery that drifted inward but the ball went past the gap between bat and pad to disturb the back of off stump and that brought Bhanuka Rajapaksa, the No.3 batter, to the crease.

Rajapaksa's stay at the crease lasted only three balls as he holed out for a duck, becoming Maharaj's first victim courtesy of a brilliant catch from Verreynne at deep midwicket.

Fernando then joined forces with Dhananjaya de Silva, and steadied the proceedings. After the 22nd over, with Sri Lanka on 105/2, rain interrupted play for a brief period.

In de Silva, Fernando found his second partner to share a fifty-run stand with. Soon, Fernando also reached the 50-run mark, scoring his first ODI half-century against South Africa.

But two overs later, their 79-run third-wicket stand came to an end when Klaasen had de Sliva stumped for 44 off Maharaj's bowling. The Sri Lanka batsman went for the slog-sweep but was beaten by the spinner's turning delivery, and Klaasen with swift hands dislodging the bails on time.

Then came in Charith Asalanka, who became Fernando's third partner to share a half-century stand with. En route to their solid 97-run stand, Fernando reached the triple-digit mark, reaching his third ODI hundred from 106 balls.

His sensational knock ended on 118 – which included 10 fours and two sixes – when Shamsi had him caught at backward point. But that didn't stop Sri Lanka from reaching 300. Asalanka made sure that the runs were flowing in as he starred with an impressive 62-ball 72. In the last five overs, Sri Lanka lost five wickets, including two run-outs on the last two balls of the innings.

A strange run-chase by South Africa.

So many wickets in hand but they didn't kick on as one would have expected them to.

From CSA:

A century by Avishka Fernando and a half-century by Charith Asalanka set up victory by 14 runs for Sri Lanka over the Proteas in the first of three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

The home team elected to bat first and posted 300/9 at the end of their allotted overs thanks to Fernando’s 118 off 115 deliveries (10x4s, 2x6s), Asalanka’s 62-ball 72 (6x4s, 1x6) and Dhananjaya de Silva’s 44 off 62. They will be pleased with the 90 runs scored off the last 10 overs on a wicket that seemed to favour the batsman once he had given himself enough time to settle in.

It was a tough bowling day for the visitors. Keshav Maharaj was the pick, returning 2/30 in his allotted spell, as well as the best economy of 3.00. Kagiso Rabada also took two wickets, his costing 66 runs in nine overs, while Aiden Markram (1/33 in six overs) and Tabraiz Shamsi (1/55 in 10) chipped in with a wicket apiece.

South Africa got off to a good start but went from 210/3 after 40 overs to finishing the match on 286/6. They lost opener, Janneman Malan for 23 (31balls) in the 10th over before his partner, Markram, found an even better partner in his captain, Temba Bavuma. They put on 106 runs for the second wicket before Bavuma retired hurt for 38 following a direct hit on the right thumb. After initial assessment, it was decided that he would be available to bat if needed and was subsequently taken for scans at the conclusion of the match under the pre-agreed COVID-19 protocols set by the two Boards (Sri Lanka Cricket and Cricket South Africa).

Markram continued to hold down the fort, leading the charge in his next partnership with Rassie van der Dussen before falling just four runs short of what would have been an exceptional century. His 96 came off just 90 balls and included five boundaries and four sixes.

Van der Dussen took over the reigns and ploughed on with Heinrich Klaasen (36), picking up his ninth ODI half-century as they went, but found himself bowled out for a run-a-ball 59 at the hands of Akila Dananjaya (2/65).

Klaasen pressed on, but lost Andile Phehlukwayo to Chamika Karunaratne (1/18) for five at the start of the 49th over before being run out himself to the second-last ball of the match. Kagiso Rabada once again showed his growing talent with the bat, hitting a quick-fire 13 from seven deliveries that featured two well struck boundaries.

The visitors only have one day to turn things around before the second, must-win match on Saturday.

South Africa’s spinner Aiden Markram bowls seven balls in an over despite no extras: The opening match of the white ball series between Sri Lanka and South Africa saw an unusual on-field cricketing incident. Despite the best of the score and ball tracking systems and devices, the ongoing first ODI at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo saw the bowling of seven deliveries in an over. The incident happened in the 16th over of the match where South Africa’s spinner Aiden Markram threw seven deliveries in an over despite no extras.

After the six balls of the over had been properly and duly done without any extras, Markram was running in for another ball when the slight confusion surfaced. The umpires suddenly realized that the over was done. However, despite completing the over, the confirmation said there is one more ball. The commentators were in for a surprise as all the prior six balls of the over had been diligently completed with no extras signalled in that over too.

Proteas captain, Temba Bavuma, has been ruled out of the remainder of the white ball series in Sri Lanka after a freak accident resulted in a fractured right thumb.

The incident took place during the first One-Day International (ODI) at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. Bavuma took a direct blow to the thumb during the 26th over of play. He was attempting to avoid a fielder’s throw-in and was unfortunately struck on the right thumb. He subsequently retired hurt two overs later due to persistent discomfort.

Scans have indicated a fracture and Bavuma will return to South Africa as soon as possible to consult a specialist. The timelines for return to play will be defined subsequent to that.

Keshav Maharaj will take over his role as captain in the ODI series and the National Selection Panel will meet to determine the T20 captain.

The Proteas are 1-0 down in series after a 14-run loss to the hosts. The second match will take place on Saturday, 04 September.

After a thrilling win in the first ODI, Sri Lanka will be looking to wrap up the series with a win in the second game against South Africa and gain crucial ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League points

Overview:

Sri Lanka vs South Africa, second ODI
R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo
4 September, 4 PM local

A win in the second ODI not only gives Sri Lanka the series win but would help them leapfrog Ireland, West Indies and Pakistan to the fifth spot on the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League table. The hosts have started to gather some momentum in white-ball cricket and will be hoping to carry it forward into the T20I series and then into the Round 1 of the T20 World Cup.

South Africa, on the other hand, will be ruing the missed opportunities from the first ODI, with the dropped catches and their batting at death effectively costing them the game.

Currently placed 11th in the CWCSL table with 24 points, the Proteas will hope they can make a comeback in the next game and force the series into a decider. They will be without Temba Bavuma, who has been ruled out for the rest of the tour with a fractured right thumb. In his absence, Keshav Maharaj will be standing in as captain for the rest of the ODI series.

Remember the last time

Avishka Fernando's century and some good death bowling by Sri Lanka bowlers helped the host clinch a 14-run win in the first ODI.

Opting to bat first, Sri Lanka put up a total of 300/9 on the back of Fernando's 115-ball 118, who was well supported by Dhananjaya de Silva and Charith Asalanka. While the spinners kept the run-rate on a leash while also picking up wickets, the pace-bowling trio of Rabada, Nortje and Phehlukwayo proved to be expensive for the Proteas.

South Africa were cruising at one point with Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma at the crease. However, the Proteas were dealt a huge blow when their skipper had to walk back to the pavilion retired hurt and two overs later, Praveen Jayawickrama scalped Markram on 96.

South Africa needed 48 runs in the last five overs with the well-set duo of Rassie van der Dussen and Heinrich Klaasen at the crease. Sri Lanka, however, managed to hold their nerve and won by 14 runs to go 1-0 up in the series.

What they said:

Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka captain): "We kept the momentum going really well. It was turning a bit in the first innings, but it didn't when we bowled. The spinners bowled in good areas, and they will come back strongly in the next game. It's always hard to chase on this wicket, and 300 is a really good total, so there was no nervous feeling for us."

Keshav Maharaj (South Africa bowler): "We had very good preparation. I thought the batters did really well. The turning point was Temba's injury, because he and Aiden were going really well until then, but credit to Sri Lanka's bowlers for holding their nerve."

Match reduced to 47 overs per side

There was a light shower which caused a delay of 15-20 minutes, the upshot is that the match has been reduced to 41 overs and the D/L target is 265.

Sri Lanka 125/4 off 26 overs, need 140 runs from 15 overs.

South Africa (283-6 | 47 overs) beat Sri Lanka (197 all out | 36.4 overs | Revised Target 265 from 41 overs) by 67 runs.

Tabraiz Shamsi takes 5/49.

Janneman Malan scored an exceptional, cramp-riddled century, while Tabraiz Shamsi took a maiden international five-wicket haul, to help South Africa to a series-levelling, 67-run victory via the DLS method, over Sri Lanka in the second of the three-match, One-Day International (ODI) series on Saturday.

The match had a little bit of everything, rain delays, centuries, five-fors, cramping and even a late ankle sprain to Kagiso Rabada (2/16 in six overs) which saw him miss out on the latter part of the Sri Lankans’ reply.

Keshav Maharaj won the toss and elected to bat first in his maiden international match as interim captain and his batsmen did not disappoint. After the early loss of Aiden Markram for 21 (29 balls, 1x4, 1x6) in the ninth over, Malan shared an exciting 96-run, second-wicket stand with Reeza Hendricks before the latter departed for a remarkable 51 off 54 deliveries (5x4s).

Rassie van der Dussen chipped in with 16 runs before his dismissal brought Heinrich Klaasen to the crease. The Proteas’ wicketkeeper blasted 43 runs from 27 balls in their 86-run partnership, assisting Malan to 121 off 135 deliveries (9x4s, 1x6) and supporting him through his frequent bouts of cramping, which saw the young opener substituted when it came to the Proteas turn to field.

South Africa finished with 283/6 after their innings was reduced to 47 overs.

Chamika Karunaratne (2/24) and Dushmantha Chameera (2/52) were the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets each.

Sri Lanka’s own innings was reduced to 41 overs after more rain fell both during the innings break and during their innings and their target was revised to 265.

The home team’s batting reply was missing the aggression of the first match. Rabada and Wiaan Mulder saw off the top three batsmen in the first six overs of the innings. Avishka Fernando (8) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (0) were toppled in the fifth over by Rabada, followed by Minod Bhanuka (7) to the opening ball of the sixth.

Shamsi (5/49) ran through the middle order, removing Charith Asalanka (77 off 69), captain, Dasun Shanaka (30) and Dhananjaya de Silva for 12.

George Linde (1/40) claimed his maiden ODI wicket - Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva for three - on debut and Maharaj (1/32) added the scalp of Chamika Karunaratne (36 off 23) before Shamsi decimated the tail for his five-fer to end the match with a little over four overs to spare.

The series decider will take place on Tuesday, 07 September at the same venue – R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium – at 14:30 (SLST).

Sri Lanka, South Africa lock horns with series on the line

SL vs SA, 3rd ODI, preview

Sri Lanka and South Africa clash in Colombo with the series level at 1-1 and crucial CWCSL points at stake.

Overview

SL vs SA, third ODI
R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo
September 7, 14:30 pm local

After a brilliant all-round performance in the opening match, the Sri Lankans struggled to replicate it in the second ODI. Early wickets meant that they were always on the backfoot in Colombo and will now have to return to the drawing board in order to seal a victory on home turf.

The Proteas were given a momentum boost with the players delivering the goods with both the bat and the ball. While Janneman Malan scored big, Tabraiz Shamsi worked his magic with his left-arm wrist spin, notching up figures of 5/49.

With only two points separating the sides on the CWCSL table, plenty will be at stake during the series decider in Colombo.

Remember the last time

Riding on the back of Malan's brilliant 121, the visitors posted a total of 283/6 on the board in their 47 overs.

Sri Lanka never found any sort of momentum in their chase, losing wickets regularly as the Proteas bowled them out for 197, sealing a 67-run victory (DLS method) and drawing the series level at 1-1.

Shamsi was the star of the show with the ball, with his five-wicket haul making all the difference.

What they said

Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka captain): "We started really well. The partnership between Janneman and Reeza took the game away from us. Death bowling also has been a cause of concern for us. The total was a chaseable one. The rain interruption also cost us a bit. We have to give more chances to fast bowlers. Last few series, the fast bowlers have been outstanding barring this series."

Keshav Maharaj (South Africa stand-in captain): "My job was made easier by the team. We bowled well up first and pushed the Lankans on the back foot. I think the boys put in more energy behind the ball today. We talked about it. You should also play to the conditions. The coaches backed us and it paid dividends. We didn't have much of a practice after the last game. We shot ourselves on the foot while chasing in the last game. Tried to work on that."

South Africa - 48/5 after 10.5 overs (target: 204).

South Africa are in trouble.

The surface is helping the spinners here , SA likely to lose the game

struggling at 52 . 5 , with very less batting to come

South Africa need 143 runs from 33.4 overs. RRR: 4.24

The required rate is not too high , but SA have lost too many wickets here. What they need is a solid partnership.

33 runs partnership so far , they need to keep going , required rate is less than 4 , no need to rush here

I am surprised at South Africa's approach. They should've been a bit more cautious.

Alright, this is a bad series defeat for South Africa, they would not have expected this.

Boucher is as idiot a coach as I've seen... He keeps playing 3-4 all rounders in the team all the time which is sheer stupidity.

South Africa need 104 runs from 27 overs. RRR: 3.85

SA problem is that they have lost too many wickets here.

South Africa's persistence with Markram who averages 29 after 33 ODIs and Reeza who averages 26 after 22 ODIs is baffling. Esp when there are some good colored players who have had very good List A season like Zubayr Hamza, Keegan Peterson and Toni de Zorzi. At least they deserve a chance.

South Africa - 113/9 after 26 overs (target: 204).

Kamindu Mendis dropped a sitter.
