South Africa tour of Sri Lanka (2021)

South Africa got bundled out for 125.

Sri Lanka win by 78 runs and take the ODI series 2-1.

Congratulations.

Maheesh Theeksana, a 21-year off-spinner, takes 4-37 on his one-day international debut. Seems to bowl the orthodox (for a Sri Lankan) mix of carrom balls and floaters.

Excellent win for Sri Lanka and some respite for Mickey Arthur.

They played both Mulder and Phehlukwayo and those two barely bowled. Some weird decisions by SA lately.

A disastrous batting collapse by the Proteas led to a 78-run loss and 2-1 series defeat to Sri Lanka at the conclusion of the third One-Day International at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Maheesh Theekshana returned the best bowling figures by a Sri Lankan spin bowler on debut with his 4/37 as the visiting side looked out of sorts in their pursuit of the hosts’ 203/9 total.

South Africa was bowled out for 125 in 30 overs with only Heinrich Klaasen (22 off 30 balls), Janneman Malan (18), George Linde (18), Andile Phehlukwayo (17) and interim captain, Keshav Maharaj (15) managing to return scores in the low double figures. The rest of the batsmen failed to see off the relentless Sri Lankan spin attack, succumbing in quick succession from the beginning of their reply.

Dushmatha Chameera (2/16) and Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva (2/32) assisted Theekshana with two wickets each, while Charith Asalanka (1/3) and Praveen Jayawickrama (1/18) chipped in with one a piece.

Earlier in the day, South Africa had also bowled well, utilizing the fullness of their spin attack for 40 of the allotted overs, leaving just 10 for the seamers. Maharaj was the pick of the bowlers with 3/38, followed by Tabraiz Shamsi (2/31) and George Linde (2/32) with two each, while Wiaan Mulder and Aiden Markram added figures of 1/3 and 1/41 respectively.

There were no half-centuries in the match, but Sri Lanka’s Asalanka made the highest score of 47 from 71 deliveries (2x 4s). Dhananjaya de Silva (31) and Dushmantha Chameera (29) were the only others who scored above 25.

South Africa will look to put in a much-improved performance in the T20 series as they start their final bit of competitive preparation ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup which begins in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Oman next month.

South Africa 163/5 beat Sri Lanka 135/6 by 28 runs.

Dinesh Chandimal remains 66* for the Sri Lankans, but batted too slow ultimately.

South Africa first posted a score of 163/5 on the board before a disciplined effort from the bowlers helped them beat Sri Lanka by 28 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the T20I series in Colombo.

Batting first, the visitors had a brisk start to their innings with openers Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock looking in supreme touch. The pair established a 73-run opening wicket stand as South Africa look set for a big total. But Wanindu Hasaranga again showcased why he is regarded as one of the best all-rounders in the shortest format of the game.

He dismissed de Kock on 36 and then followed it up with the scalp of Hendricks for 38 in his next over. Heinrich Klassen would soon follow suit, being trapped by Maheesh Theekshana on 2. Aiden Markram and David Miller were then left with the rebuilding job.

The pair did exactly that, with vital contributions which ensured that the Proteas would register a competitive score on the board. They came up with a 65-run stand, but would both perish in the end, trying to up the ante. Markram scored 48, while Miller contributed with 26 as the visitors would end up with a total of 163/5 in their 20 overs.

In reply, Sri Lanka had a steady start with openers Dinesh Chandimal and Avishka Fernando looking steady at the crease. But they could not capitalize and convert it into a big stand as Fernando was run-out on 11 by Anrich Nortje. It was the best of starts for skipper Keshav Maharaj on his T20I debut as he trapped Bhanuka Rajapaksa on a golden duck. Charith Asalanka also struggled during his brief stay at the crease, scoring a 19-ball 6 before being dismissed by Tabraiz Shamsi.

The onus was now on the set Chandimal along with his skipper Dasun Shanaka to guide the hosts to a victory. Chandimal would bring up a brilliant half-century, but had to see his skipper depart soon after. Shanaka was bowled by Bjorn Fortuin on 16, just as he was looking to tee up in the final phase of the innings. Hasaranga too couldn't trouble the scorers, attempting a big shot against Dwaine Pretorius, as the visitors edged closer to a series lead.

Despite Chandimal's knock of 66*, the target proved to be too much for the hosts as they eventually ended up losing the contest by 28 runs with the Proteas going 1-0 up in the three-match series.

Sri Lanka target fightback against confident South Africa

SL vs SA, 2nd T20I, preview

After going 1-0 down in the three-match T20I series, Sri Lanka will aim for improved performances in all three departments in the second encounter against South Africa in Colombo.

Overview:

Sri Lanka vs South Africa, second T20I
R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo
September 12, 19:00 local

Sri Lanka will have major concerns about their batting unit heading into the second T20I considering the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 is just over a month away. Acceleration and acceleration at the right time has been a major concern for them, an issue which again reared its head in the opening contest. They will always expect more from their bowlers to stem the flow of runs and deliver regular breakthroughs.

The Proteas will be much happier with their performance after first game. They will still strive for improvements in the batting unit and hope that the batters can convert their starts into big knocks, enabling them to post bigger scores on the board.

Remember the last time:

Batting first, South Africa posted a score of 163/5 after handy contributions with the bat from Reeza Hendricks, Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram and David Miller.

Sri Lanka never managed to get ahead of the chase, despite Dinesh Chandimal's half-century, losing wickets at regular intervals. They eventually fell short by 28 runs, with South Africa going 1-0 ahead.

What they said:

Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka captain): "There were quite a few challenges. We should have maximized the powerplay; it has been a concern in the last few series for us. The pitches will be a big factor, but we need to adjust to the conditions better. I am trying to play the best team in this series and we want to win the series, but I'll probably try and see some of the other players also."

Keshav Maharaj (South Africa captain): "Very happy, brilliant performance all around. I have always wanted to play T20 cricket. I might be 31 but I feel like I'm 21. Just trying to do my bit and get my place in that World Cup starting XI. I always looked up to Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. I have tried to emulate myself on Dravid, he's been such a gentleman. He went under Sachin's radar and has been such a great of the game."

South Africa came up with a commanding performance to win the second T20I in Colombo against Sri Lanka, to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

Looking to restore parity in the series, Sri Lanka opted to bat first in the second T20I of the series. Praveen Jayawickrama was handed his T20I debut while Kusal Perera returned to the playing XI for the first time since he suffered a shoulder sprain ahead of the series against India. For South Africa, Rassie van der Dussen was drafted into the team in David Miller's place.

In their bid to score quick runs early on in the innings, Dinesh Chandimal mistimed his pull to mid-on and fell to Anrich Nortje in the second over. A couple of rain interruptions later, Aiden Markram brought an end to Bhanuka Rajapaksa's quickfire innings with a sharp caught and bowled.

However, Kagiso Rabada's two overs in the Powerplay fetched Sri Lanka 29 runs and helped release the pressure building up from the wickets. Despite losing two wickets in the first six overs, the hosts went at almost 9 rpo to put up 52 runs.

Spin at both ends helped South Africa put the brakes on the scoring. The No.1 ranked T20I bowler, Tabraiz Shamsi, struck twice in two overs to dismiss Dhananjaya de Silva and Dasun Shanaka. Markram trapped Perera plump in front of the stumps in the 11th over as half the Sri Lankan side were back in the hut for 78.

Bjorn Fortuin got in on the act and rattled Wanindu Hasaranga's with the arm-ball. In his final over, Shamsi scalped his third of the innings with a peach of a ball that kissed the inside edge of Chamika Karunaratne's bat onto the stumps.

Sri Lanka lost their final three wickets in a span of eight balls and were bowled out for just 103 after being 52/2 at one point. South Africa reaped the rewards for persisting with spin after the Powerplay right until the end, with Markram and Shamsi picking up three wickets each.

In reply, South Africa had a blistering start, with Quinton de Kock playing the role of an aggressor. Reeza Hendricks on the other hand was happy to rotate the strike. The wicketkeeper-batsman was looking in sublime touch, playing some crunching shots.

The pair soon brought up their fifty run partnership, as the Proteas were cruising home to a comfortable victory. But Wanindu Hasaranga struck for the hosts, breaking the 62-run stand by notching the scalp of Hendricks for 18. Soon after, rain interrupted the proceedings with South Africa requiring 39 runs in 66 deliveries.

After the re-start, de Kock joined by Aiden Markram made easy work of the chase, as the former brought up his half-century. They sealed the victory with nine wickets in hand, to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

South Africa’s awesome spin bowling foursome of Tabraiz Shamsi (3/20), Aiden Markram (3/21), Bjorn Fortuin (2/12) and Keshav Maharaj (1/10) took nine wickets between them to help set up a clinical, nine-wicket victory over Sri Lanka and seal the three-match T20 international series 2-0 with a match to spare at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

This is South Africa’s third, consecutive T20 series win – all of which have been away from home – following victories over West Indies and Ireland.

Sri Lanka were outplayed by the visitors’ bowling attack, struggling visibly in their backyard after winning the toss and electing to bat first. They were bundled out for 103 in 18.1 overs, their lowest first innings total. Kusal Perera made a welcome return following time off due to illness and returned with the hosts’ highest score of 30 off 25 deliveries (2x4s, 1x6). The only other contributions in double figures came from Bhanuka Rajapaksa (20 off 13 balls), Charith Asalanka (14) and captain, Dasun Shanaka (10).

Anrich Nortje’s (1/8) wicket contribution was the first of the innings, getting rid of the dangerous Dinesh Chandimal for five.

The Proteas’ batting reply was as impressive as the preceding bowling innings. Quinton de Kock (58 off 48, 7x4s) led the charge and finished with an unbeaten half-century. His opening stand of 62 runs with Reeza Hendricks (18 off 19 balls) laid a strong foundation for Markram to accompany De Kock on the way to the team’s victory after Hendricks lost his wicket to Hasaranga de Silva (1/22) in the ninth over.

Markram’s 21 off 19 balls (3x4s) tied in beautifully with his career-best bowling figures of 3/21 to end the day as comprehensively as the team could manage.

The third and final match will take place at the same venue on Tuesday where South Africa will hope to get a series sweep.

Preview:

Having clinched a third T20I series on the trot, South Africa will be aiming for a clean sweep of the Twenty20 games against Sri Lanka in what will be the final international assignment for both teams ahead of the T20 World Cup that starts next month.

South Africa have been the superior team with the use of spin while they've also batted well against the slower bowlers, which has helped them enjoy an unassailable lead in the three-match series. Sri Lanka will be hoping to find some answers, especially with their batting, as they attempt to avoid their second T20I series whitewash in the last four months.

Batting has been Sri Lanka's weak link - be it the 0-3 loss in the T20I series in England in June this year, the two losses to South Africa in this series so far, or even their 2-1 victory against a second-string Indian side before this series. In the 11 T20Is Sri Lanka have played in this year, there have been only four individual half-centuries - two of which have been scored by Dinesh Chandimal.

With Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis and Niroshan Dickwella serving bans for breaching COVID-19 protocols in England and the non-availability of Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka have plenty of worries going into the T20 World Cup, where they will first have to play the qualifiers to make it to the Super 12.

Meanwhile, Kusal Perera, making his return after recovering from COVID-19, looked promising in the last game and a lot will depend on him to give Sri Lanka a good start. But the finish will also matter a lot and Sri Lanka will need some of the inexperienced players in the middle order to step up, having posted a highest of 131 in the last five innings they've batted first, while their chases this year have been abject whenever oppositions have posted 160 or more.

South Africa's spinners have profited more than their Sri Lankan counterparts on spin-friendly pitches in Colombo, with even Aiden Markram bagging a career-best 3-21 in the last game. Bjorn Fortuin, Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi have all been amongst the wickets, which augurs well for South Africa leading into the T20 World Cup that will be played on pitches which may not necessarily provide plenty of help for spin but there will be some for sure.

When: Tuesday, September 14 at 7:00 PM local time

Where: R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo

What to expect: Temperatures hovering around 28-degree Celsius and a rain-free evening has been forecast. The pitch is expected to favour the spinners again.

Team news

Sri Lanka: The hosts could look at giving Dhananjaya de Silva a break considering his batting struggles in this series. Avishka Fernando might come back in his place and take the opening position, with Dinesh Chandimal batting at No. 3.

Probable XI: Kusal Perera, Avishka Fernando, Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka (c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Praveen Jayawickrama, Maheesh Theekshana

South Africa: Wiaan Mulder, Andile Phehlukwayo and Lizaad Williams, part of South Africa's T20 World Cup squad, were excluded from the eleven for the first two games in this series. A couple of them or all three might get an opportunity in the third T20I.

Probable XI: Quinton de Kock (wk), Reeza Hendricks, Aiden Markram, Rassie van der Dussen, Heinrich Klaasen, Wiaan Mulder, Andile Phehlukwayo, Keshav Maharaj (c), Bjorn Fortuin, Anrich Nortje, Tabraiz Shamsi.

What they said

"Maybe in the past, when we got to spinning wickets, we had a reluctance in picking spinners so that's been a refreshing change. We are picking teams according to the conditions and we have the players to back it up" - Tabraiz Shamsi is happy with South Africa's spin arsenal.

There have been question marks of late about my form away from home, and now to actually start producing (runs) from my hard work and start winning series is a big thing, especially on subcontinent tours" - Quinton de Kock is deighted at South Africa's three series wins on the bounce.
Squads:
Sri Lanka Squad: Kusal Perera, Dinesh Chandimal(w), Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka(c), Charith Asalanka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Praveen Jayawickrama, Nuwan Pradeep, Lahiru Madushanka, Pulina Tharanga, Akila Dananjaya, Minod Bhanuka, Binura Fernando, Ramesh Mendis, Lahiru Kumara, Avishka Fernando, Kamindu Mendis, Pathum Nissanka

The Proteas finished their tour of Sri Lanka in glorious style when they won the final T20 International match in Colombo this evening by 10 wickets to give them a 3-0 clean sweep of the series.

It was South Africa’s third victory by this margin, the previous ones being against Pakistan and Zimbabwe, while the unbroken partnership of 121 between Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks was a South African record for any wicket partnership against Sri Lanka.

The performance also enabled the Proteas to equal their record of seven successive victories in this format, first achieved in 2009 when they beat Australia twice at home and then won five matches in a row in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in England.

Remarkably the Proteas have only lost one wicket in the last two matches of this series while the bowlers restricted Sri Lanka to a run a ball in the same games.

Today’s victory was set up by another superb bowling performance after Sri Lanka had won the toss on the best batting surface of the series with Kagiso Rabada and Bjorn Fortuin being responsible for three wickets in the power play. Thereafter there was no recovery for the home side who looked as though they would struggle to reach three figures before eventually finishing on 120.

De Kock (59 off 46 balls, 7 fours) and Hendricks (56 off 42 balls, 5 fours and a six) then made light work of the target, the match finishing with 32 balls still available.

De Kock was named both Man of the Match and Man of the Series.
