All said and done his bowling average against the best team of his time is very poor. Pollock averaged 36 against Australia. He averaged worse in SA. 47.

Geez this last 15 overs or so have been boring - SA desperate not to lose more wickets.

1 more wicket here and its been a great day for the Aussies. They need to try and gain a big a lead as possible over S.A in 1st inns.

They used to do that from day 1 few years back. Now they have vastly improved. They are second to none when it comes to attritional cricket. They had a specialist to do that Job. Andrew Hall. McKenzie is exactly doing that.

S.A 85/3 @ Close

South Africa will need to bat solidly tomorrow to get back into this match.

They have seen off the difficult period. I was expecting a major collapse. They managed to survive. So i won't be surprised if they bat the entire day tomorrow.

Not a bad performance from OZ, considering we were missing Symmo, Lee, Watson, Hayden (forever) and Clark.

Clark is the most notable omission. Definitely would have added some variety to the bowling attack. Judging by Lee's and Hayden's performances oflate SA misses them more than OZ. Watson . what can i say. It is a miracle he played few matches after resumption of his career.

Seriously, South Africa bowling attack has become the joke now. Tailender like Johnson scoring almost a century? Making new comer players look good already? I thought the pitch was quality, and especially for fast bowler. Give the similar pitch to Sohail Tanveer and he will create havoc just like that.

Johnson - Well Done. It's not easy to score 96 with fast strike rate.

how is their bowling attack a joke ? Just because they had one bad performance doesn't make them a joke. And Johnson is not a tailender.

more like tanveer is the biggest joke in pak cricket, i cant believe why people rate this guy so much he's a trundler :imran

The pitch was absolute brilliant for the fast bowlers. I can do nothing but laugh at the bowlers while our bowlers back in Pakistan somehow try their hard to make comeback just like second inning against Sri Lanka on dead track.

Seriously, this is such a laughable. Pace is not everything. Looks like you need line and length or possibly to bowl inswing/outswing stuff like that. Pace is not everything.

Now don't let them off the hook this time Aussies :batman:

Most definately NOT!

Start of Day 3

South Africa in trouble

138-6

Didnt like Boucher's reaction to being given out - Match ref might want to get involved in that!

What was his reaction.

Also SA have used up all their referals

He started shaking his head - mouthing 'No, No' - gestured for the referral, but continued shaking his head and mouthing 'No'

He asked for thereferral, that shold have sufficed.

I can see a lot of dissent being 'hushed up' when calling for a referral.

He's still continuing his protest in the changing room...

Not looking good at all for the Proteas...

156-8

Aussies will defo enforce the follow-on

Shocking LBW decison by Bucknor by the way!

Was missing off-stick by about 6 ins - SAffers had no referrals left!

Australia deserve to win. But the referal system has seriously favoured australia....boucher wasn't out as snicko proved. Why not let the third umpire use that too ? Now harris is out to one that an obvious referral would have given not out , but none left. The system is broken.

If I don't comment it's because the interest has gone put of the match for me. In that case I'll be watching super 14 rugby and congrats on a thorough thrashing australia. Let's hope the saffers can come back and really bring the series to life in the next tests.

Not a criticism at all - just pointing out to Romalii Roti that its 'quiet'

Well not exactly a "gripping close" battle at the moment. We all know there can only be one winner .Al that can save the saffers is the rain. So why stick around to chat about the obvious ?

I can talk about the rain all day...

Fickle supporters you SA's, your team is doing it tough so you lose interest.

Oxy bhai, you are funnier when you talk about Zaheer Khan and :wasim . That commentary was pretty funny :)

:wasim "If you are Zaheer Khan in disguise, then I love you too...maybe you can teach me how to pronounce your name some time"

Anyway....saffers always lose the first test and then only wake up. It's our "brand". The aussies batted brilliantly well...none of the Haydenesque arrogance that so easily lead to their demise in Australia...trying to hit everything out the park and dominate. They waited for the bowlers to bowl he bad ball and put it away wile the saffers tried with all their might the same tactic that had worked for them before....bore the batsman out by bowling wide of the stumps. Especially impressed by the new "boy" ..North......with his ability to leave the ball. Johnson..well.....when it's you day I suppose.

So there you have it...Australia 1-0....South African once again with everything to prove. A small part of me is very happy about that. Without the aussies as the "bad guys" to beat I pretty much lose a great part of why I follow cricket. We white south africans are so used to figtin with the whole world that we get confused when everyone starts respecing us. We feel far more comfortable as the struggling , scrapping under dog.

SA need Devillers and Steyn out there no more wickets to be lost, thats what they must say to them selves.

I thought the blacks were the struggling, scrapping underdogs and the whites were the dominant oppressive masters.

It was similar to that time when he apparently lost his internet connection for a few weeks after mouthing off before the Aus-SA semi-final in the last World Cup.

That was a classic moment in PP history:

"Where's Saffer" :D

S.A 189/8

De villiers is some how going to have to do what duminy did in Australia and help the tail wag.

208/9

Mcdonald gets de steyn after 52 run partnership.

de villiers on 93*

Aussies 258 ahead!

Happy Meal gets Steyn.

SA 208/9

Will Aussies force follow on here? if thet get last wicket now!

100 for De villiers well played!

Hes held S.A reply together here!

johnson gets his 4th!

S.A 200 all out and are 247 behind!

Aussies will come out and bat again. Intresting to see what sort of total they look to set here for S.A

Lets see if debutant Hughes can get off a pair!

MJ got 96* with bat and 4/25 with ball an excellent game for him so far!

If SA had posted a big total Hughes would have been under a lot more pressure. Now he can just play his natural game.

S.A for some reason tend to play badly in 1st test of a series at home. They have lost to W.I and india in past but come back to win series!

Very cynical and lacking in empathy. My father sat on a border with a gun for 14 years because he believed if he didn't communists were coming to murder his wife and children. And as a matter of fact....if he didn't they would have. It's not a situation any white south african enjoyed. It was bred out of necessity. If you don't live in africa , please don' tproject your childish views of the world onto it. You come to africa and try and hold someones hand and sing "kumbiya" you're likely to get it hacked off with a machete.

I went on a sea cruise. Hardly something I require sympathy or am likely to feel sorry for myself about. We whipped pakistan 3-1 as I remember so I don't quite get the joke.

Oh or you might mean after the Australiam series....please note my absense after we won fo the past month too. I mean really...I have more of a life than to sit on a cricket chat room when there's no cricket I'm interested on. But please ...titlilate your fancy.

Yet you think you can project your childish views onto Australians when you have never been or lived there. You come across as a hypochrite.

SA came teasingly close to become no.1. Now it is going to be hard road for Saffers to achieve their dream.

Like i said, too much of SA-AUS Cricket will kill the interest of Cricket for sure. Plus, people are getting fed up by watching too many Australia Cricket Series nowadays. I don't remember the last time i have watched Australia Cricket. Perhaps, the first ODI against Kiwi?

Ashes might be interesting, and comparable to other series, should be exciting series.

Aus 51/1 bad light stopped play

Aussies should have stayed out there and looked to have got some more runs.

The rain dance has worked for the SA fans.
Lets c how the weather will be for the next 2 days.

i guess no play for today.

4.50: Play has been officially called off for the day. Play will start at 10am tomorrow which is a half-an-hour early start.

Stumps Day 3

Ponting 1(15) - Hughes 36(63)
Aus 51-1 after 16.3 overs - lead of 297

I live in JHB. It has been raining every day for a few weeks now in the late-afternoons. It is the norm i.e. highveld thunderstorms.

At work we all predicted this match will be a draw due to the weather.

The Aussies will relly need to play their cards right on the declaration.

^^^^^^

If it rains on day 4 and day 5 then it will be a difficult task for AUS to bowl out the saffers. I feel they will want to have a VERY big lead before declaring.

18 for 2 .....this australian side is almost so bad it's almost boring. Not that they're a terrible side....but I don't feel for a moment like beating them is a great achievement now.....little the same as england or there abouts.

What will it be at the end of Day 5? Depends on whether the Jaaps win or lose I reckon. Saffer will either say the game has been really boring, not worth following since "SA always lose the 1st Test anyway" or "ZOMG this amazing Saffer side has confirmed that its #1 in the world with an epic win vs the OZ!" :)))

Play has started early, Aus now 313 ahead.

Hughes 47* in his first Test. First time I have had a good look, odd technique but looks solid enough.

Saffers sooking about the umpiring on the commentary.

Hope the match goes till the end. Australia deserves to win this Test as they have put up a good come back performance.

These Saffer commentators are hilarious - they've been sooking about dismissals for 15mins now. :))

We should declare when we get to 420 lead or so.

Come on Dubya, smash Harris into retirement!!

Aus 99/4

Husseys form of late has been shockingly poor! Mr Cricket has gone from been bradmen to a badmen!

Hughes and North need to dig in here for Aussies!
