South Africa v England, 3rd Test, Cape Town

I will be at Newlands for the 1st and 2nd day and maybe the last day if the game turns out to be exciting.

I am starting this thread for those who are interested in discussing this game.

It's overcast in Cape Town today and the weather is expected to be the same tomorrow with heavy winds. 30% chance of rain expected.

The conditions are very favourable for Anderson and so Smith will have to win the toss and field first.

It's heavily overcast in Cape Town this morning. Conditions not dissimilar to Sydney. Everyone is talking about Ntini being dropped for this game

In terms of recent form I would play Friedel De Wet instead of Ntini. I think it was a stupid decision to leave him out in the second test match.

My friends from India are who are busy with a IT project are frantically calling me to pick them up for the game. It's still a bit early I know why! The first 300 peopler entering the gate will get Free Castle Lager T shirts and desis will not miss anything free :)

This test should be interesting. I think Ntini is out....
Enjoy Khalil....:)

Ntini has been dropped, England team not yet known, play currently due to start at 8.45 BST. Toss in 5 mins. Very interesting, don't know whether to bat or bowl first given the conditions.

I think Carberry might make his debut today.

Any news on Shah, Whippy? Has he been demoted so far down the ranks that the likes of Carberry (never heard of him before) are picked ahead of him?

After being dropped from the ODI side, I think he'll have to accept that England just don't rate/like him that much. To be fair, after a promising debut Shah has largely wasted his chances in the test side and he was pretty ordinary for most of the year in the one-day arena - to me, one score in the CT doesn't change that. I feel his chance has gone - he's not young, and with the test team doing so well, the top 6 have their places solidified for at least this series and the next, and the next one is against Bangladesh, so none of them will fail there either. So basically, the current top 6 will all be there in the summer too, barring injuries, and even then England would clearly have other players they want to try. Sorry Owais!

Strauss wins the toss and decides the field first in good swing bowling conditions. COME ON LET'S DO A PAKISTAN AT THE SCG!

unchanged England XI, go Colly, loads of England fans at the ground too :)

YES! A peach that rises on Prince forces him to glove behind, his mare of a series continues, opener my bum

1/1

Jimmy also needs to get Kallis and Smith with this shiny cherry, the two best players!

Wonderful delivery from Anderson.

SA 1 down.

Prince gone.

New batsman is Hashim Amla.

I feel South Africa will be nervous considering they collapsed in the last innings. What's worse is the conditions they have to bat in. Perfect for England.

Prince has had an awful series so far.

63 runs in 3 innings.

Onions to bowl.

Cheers man life is good, particularly this morning so far! Swann drops Smith off Onions 1st ball - poor cricket - let's hope we do not live to regret it

Successive boundaries for Smith.

Should ease the pressure somewhat.

Will Smith make England pay?

England have lost one of their appeals.

Amla plays and misses. Strauss goes for the referral.

Not out.

Despite the early wicket of Prince; South Africa are doing pretty well.

40-1 after 15 overs.

Smith 20 not out

Amla 14 not out

Smith looking good after the early let off.

Amla is more settled.

Amla out too.

Gone for 14. LBW Onions.

Played all around it.

Kallis walks in.

dunno what to think now. we need these two out quickly or else no point in bowling first

Smith gone - 52 for 3 - SA are stuggling

Gaeme "Murali" Swann takes out AB and Duminy on consecutive balls.

131/5

What has happened to South Africa?

More trouble for SA and a good toss for Johann to win. Jimmy will always be good in these conditions.

SA are supposed to pick four players of colour, yes? That is an interesting problem for them, because Ntini has been dropped, Prince is failing as opener, and Duminy is not contributing. Only Amla could be said to be putting in, but even he has failed to reach double figures three times in a row. Prince would surely do better at #6 but who would they bring is as an opener?

As much as I want England to win...the thought of India benefitting from Englands win disgusts me...

Ah well, lets concentrate on our own team i guess.

boucher tata man........nice, how broady saw him off lol

btw, boucher is so used to standing in a wicket keepers position that sometimes even off filed he stands like that, even bending his knees lol

Well batted Shark, you got your team out of a hole.

And once again Kallis is batting for his averages ... keep it up Jacques, player of the decade. ;-)

I don't think you undertand test cricket.

The Proteas were in trouble and Kallis had to play a anchor role. A strike rate of 57 is bad bad in test cricket.

Fantastic atmosphere.

The English also had a huge support. Cricket is much more enjoyable being at the ground instead of watching it on TV.

It just started drizzling in Cape and it's very overcast and so I am exoecting Anderson to get rid of the tail early

I guess you missed the sarcasm. Too much time in the sun today? :13:

Kallis will always play the anchor role for the Proteas. I believe he could have a higher strike rate if he did not have to play this role.

People from England are flocking to Cape Town. Property adverts in many areas in Cape Town especially along the atlantic seaboard are advertised in British pounds.

English saffers support South Africa

The only thing that Kallis did not achieve is to score a double century. Scoring a double century would require him to score at a higher rate. Maybe tomorrow will be his day if he starts accelerating his run rate

What a great day of cricket. England, a rather medoicre side, possibly even as bad as say for example India , have gotten the best of the conditions this whole series. But mighty saffer pride saw us put up a fight.

I have a feeling they no longer have an official policy on that. Khalil might be able to confirm or JAF.

The Proteas only need to field 2 players of colour at present and they usually field 4. There are rumours that the quota system will end soon in the selection of the national team but will continue at domestic level.

The are so many very good players of colour in South Africa's domestic level and I don't think the quota system is needed anymore. Players of colour will make it to the protea team on merit

It's a beautiful sunny morning in Cape Town. The game will be starting 30 minutes earlier this morning due to time lost yesterday.

I am on my way to Newlands for Day 2

Holy smokes England have picked up 3 wickets for 1 run today! South Africa have fallen to 281-9 within 2 overs of Day 2!

Perhaps England are a better side than they were given credit for after the Ashes.

Englands bowlers have done well all series and its pretty much Kallis whose stood in their way most of time.

S.A bowlers will need to take some early wickets shortly!

Trott gone now and England are 36-2 looks like we could have an interesting test match on our hands!

GONE!! KP goes 2nd ball he faces...hits it straight back to steyn who takes a superb one handed return catch!

36-3

Double strike for Steyn

Trott and Pietersen sent back.

SA on top.

England 208-6

not to far away from S.A 1st inns total...

England 241 for 7 and the game is nicely balanced.

South Africa should seriously get of Harris

Wow! test cricket can be so good, especially in low scoring games. Given a Swanneee!!! batting special, England could take a narrow lead tomorrow. They won't want to chase many on this.

reckon swann can hit another 50??

Swann and Anderson are no mugs with the bat

I think that England can add about another 60 runs

160, then jimmy and co will get you all out for 88 - innings win :asif tek thet

This England side bats deep. Broad and Swann at 8 and 9 really get them out of holes at times.

It's extremely hot in Cape Town this morning.

Temperatures in the city is expected to rise to 36 degree celcius.

This will favour South Africa as England will be unfamiliar playing in such conditions

Ntini is so disappointed that he has been dropped that he did not even go to the ground

Bloody hell, what's going on? Seems to be a wicket falling every over in this match! Batting in the morning sessions is IMPOSSIBLE!

Morkel removes Anderson too.

241/9.

Morkel on a hat-trick.
