Onions isn't bad in defence for a number 11. we seem to be past the age of really useless tailenders and number 11 rabbits. just need every run possible now.

Not a great lead but psychologically very important. English tails really would have been up if they'd managed a lead and the saffers confidence really down.

frustrating session, we totally wasted the new ball with unthreatening bowling and a field that left the leg side ridiculously open. Needs something special to happen otherwise the game will have slipped away by this evening, there will be no draw here, there is too much time left. We have to play to win, starting the first over after tea. We may not get a better chance to win the series than today.

Tea? What about the lunch session? Or is it that you have already conceded that session to us????? ;-)

Oops. And although defeat here looks likely for us, I won't give up hope on the series because of what happened in Jo'burg last time.

No draws in this game (weather dependant ofcourse).

England should have done better on day 1. If you win the toss and have your opponents at 127/5 on a bowling friendly pitch and allow them to get to 291 then you have essentially thrown away the advantage.

Having a deficit, regardless of the size, batting on the historically better day for batters, is another point of concern for England.

If SA get anywhere close to a 280 - 300 run lead England are in serious trouble. This pitch is gonna be terrible to bat last on.

Morkel, has at last, shown what he cab be capable of and Steyn is rapidly getting back to where he was before the injury.

All in all I would like SA to win and both sides go into the final test having to win to win the series.

S.A 56/1 lead is 74 runs...

Chasing 250 last maybe a toughie here...!

lots of economy but still no threat! So frustrating!

Depends from which side you see it!!! From my point of view excellent stuff!!!

Ooooh. That review of Smith's has got to hurt England.

Not looking quite as smug and smirky the poms here. After Durban you'd think suddenly they're become a brilliant unbeatable cricket team they way they are prancing about.

This whole day is doing my nut in, nothing is happening and we're out of luck. Our only hope is a batting collapse and/or the baking sun killing the wicket.

To be fair this is a flat pitch. It only ever looked dangerous because of overhead conditions in the first innings and some excellent fast bowling by Morkel and Steyn. It's also quickened up now and more even paced. Should stay good for batting for the duration of the match. Bowlers need to be patient and England have tried to hard to bowl south Africa out, rather than play the waiting game so far. Oh and they're tried tampering with the ball too.

;)

South Africa need to cash in between now and the new ball. Go at at least 3 and over if they can so they're up around 300 ahead by the time it comes. In a perfect saffer world that is.

Amla starting to look very dangerous. 50 up for him now too in quick time.

Amla has gone past smith now and is motoring

144/1 - Amla 62*

S.A aiming for 300+ lead atleast here with platform they have...

hehe, love how arrogant saffer gets but seems to forgot his team lost by an innings last test at home!

Well done Smith on your 19th test century.

Well played.

South Africa leading up 242.

Smith nicks it to Prior

And walks - then realises that it fell short of Prior. No appeal from Prior or Struass.

224-1

Smith 103*

Amla 89*

S.A look like they will bat england out of the game here... england may need an atherton type inns later to save this match!

Salute to smith.... what a fine knock...

He and amla have now batted england outta the game... kudos

S.A 302/2 - Lead 320

My guess is 450-500 lead and have 4.5 or maybe 5 sessions at england on day 4/5!

Good news for England.

The temperature in Cape Town this afternoon peaked at 38 degrees celcius at noon today. A massive cold front is on it's way to Cape Town and the expected temperature at noon tomorrow is expected to drop to 24 degrees celcius. This drop in temperature will result in a heavy fog/mist which will either prevent play or if play is possible under floodlights will assist swing bowlers.

As a local Capetonian who knows the effects of such weather patterns , I am almost certain that least the morning session will be lost due to bad light

Heavy mist in Cape Town this morning.

The game will start in 4 hours and it could clear.

The temperature yesterday in Cape Town was 39 degrees celcius and it only 11 degrees celcius now and expected to reach about 24 degrees at noon.

I am expecting the ball to swing today and it's likely to be a bowlers day

Smith gone for a brilliant 183.

Onions gets him.

Looking back at the replay it was a no ball from Onions

Excellent knock by Smith.

S.A should try to score quicker and declare after lunch. 450 should should be a winning target

South Africa 395/4

AB and Duminy batting

When will Smith Declare... at lunch.. I think that the present lead of 413 is big enough for Smith to declare

I think he will bat till tea.

That leaves him with about 120 overs at england. If you cannot get them out inside that 120 overs then it does not matter when you declared.

Make the test safe then go for victory, especially being 1 down in the series with 1 to play

England has this i the bag. All the hallmarks of an Ashes series; draw the first test, and with it the blood of the opposition; capitalise in the second test and much like The Oval 2005; Pietersen will score a match saving 160 . .

I think that it would require about 4 sessions to bowl England out. Newlands wicket is still batting friendly

S.A lead up to 415.

I think an hour worth of batting declare 500 ahead and 4.5 sessions at england will be a tough ask for them to save game.

Precisely why I said that SA should bat till tea leaving them 4 sessions and about 120 overs at england. Bat them out of the game and thern set you attacking fields not having to worry about the runs scenario.

AB gone

S.A 403/5

I think that S.A should set England a target of 450

Good this thread is open again. I think that they have decided on 450

All eyes will be on Jonathen Trott

Will he perform his time wasting ritual again?

Intresting to see englands batting mind set here!

If England does not lose more than 2 wickets by close of day 4 than they can still force a draw as this wicket is very flat

64 without loss.

Harris looking crap. England can still draw this game

England 87/0 and looking good.

If they keep on scoring at the current rate and don't lose any wickets by close of play today than they can win this game

Kallis bowling brilliantly with good pace, bounce and getting late swing. Kallis first over was the best over of the match

England draw this game----they win the series isnt?

No. England will remain one up with one more test to play

If S.A does not win this test than they cannot win the series.

If S.A does not win this test and the next test than India will remain as the number one test team

107 for 1

England are trying to save this match and a really poor and iresponsible shot from Cook gives de Wet an undeserved wicket from a poor ball

Another irresponsible shot, this time by Strauss gives S.A their second wicket.

Another poor ball from Harris which Strauss work from off to leg.

England commiting suicide here

England 108 for 2 and Pieterse is in.

The match seems all but over for England

Harper gives another shocker. Huge inside edge and he gives K.P. out.

How on earth did he miss that ?

He is not given out on review.

ENG 132/3 at close, Some battling needed to save game tomorrow for england.

England had a real chance of forcing a draw after a very good opening partnership. Poor shots saw them losing 3 wickets in no time and now they will really struggle to force a draw.

It's going to be overcast tomorrow but no rain. I did not go to Newlands today even though I bought a ticket. I was too tired being up the entire morning watching the Sydney test.

we're jiggered. I always like to give us a chance, but unless trott and/or colly still have their pads on at teatime - no chance. I know they'll do their best, and if Colly plays well, there is maybe a slim chance. But that's all.

faint hope lies with the series situation. If south africa struggle for scalps their shouldes might drop. We don't have to win - they do.

It's the 5th day today.

It's slightly overcast with a strong South Easter.

South Africa should win this test aas England have already lost their 3 big guns

The wind in Cape Town has reached 50 kpm.

It's going to be very difficult playing cricket in these conditions

Is the wind blowing across the track or from an end?

Wicket is flat , ball is old. If England can not loose more than 1 wicket before the new ball it should be pretty easy to bat out the day.

But with Steyn and Morkel firing down missiles (boys are bowling a good 10 kmph quicker than the poms) and a 5th day pitch with slightly overcast conditions I'm quietly confident the better team will win (South Africa).

It's across the track which could make bowling a little difficult. I believe that many years ago some bowler by the name of Stephan Jeffries took 10 wickets in an innings because he was a local boy who knew exactly how to use the wind to his advantage.

Maybe Kallis will do well as a bowler because he grew up in Cape Town and played most of his cricket at Newlands

England 198 for 5

Bell and Collingwood need to surive this session for England to have any chance of a win

this is pathetic as usual from RSA cant get colly and bell out!!!
:)))

only less time left now.... i reckon it would be a draw??

no chance of eng victory tho

Aah, stephen jeffries!!! Now that brings back fond memories!!! Opened the bowling (lefty) with garth le roux!!!! Fairly decent pace attack back then!!!! Jeffries was a bit of a loose cannon with 1 of the wildest actions I have ever seen!!!!

Steyn is unlucky not to get a wicket with the new ball.

Bowled some unplayable deliveries to Collingwood.
