What's new

South Africa vs India | 1st Test | Cape Town | Jan 5-9, 2018 | Day 1 | Discussion Thread

awful team selection from kohli...rahul for dhawan and Rehane for the FTB would have been perfect.

What is the logic behind playing Bumrah, Sharma, Pandya when India have experienced test players sat around?

Because meritocracy is not a criteria any more for selections in Indian cricket since it became the Kohli-Shastri show. Kohli likes you? You're in. He doesn't? Good luck.

Heard Harsha Bhogle say that you have to play attritional cricket in SA.

I am not sure i agree with that. You should take a few overs to get set and then start making runs at a brisk pace in SA because any ball can have your name written on it. Thats exactly what SA did today when they were batting.

Its a tough pitch dude. Indian pacers didn't use it properly.

Yes, we have away wickets but it ain't some easy pitch to keep batting.

I wrote it during Mohali ODI (SRL) - Indian pacers are going to play without any real match practice, they’ll bowl wrong length in SAF.

After that start, I think pacers got excited and forgot the fundamental of bowling on such wickets - keep things tight. SAF ran away at 4.5 and IND top order had the worst start; 11 overs at the end and another 4 x 5 with semi old ball coming tmro morning, when this wicket should be at it’s fastest. Won’t be surprised if SAF starts 2nd innings shortly either side of lunch.

Another surprise is that we try to share lots of cricket insights here, one about the wickets of different countries. Still, surprised to notice most posters failed to read this wicket. This wicket is a first cut wicket (used fresh for this Test); it has moisture underneath, but built on hard surface with clay and deep rooted grass - it’ll be fastest on day 2/3 and a batting paradise on day 3/4, after that cracks should open.

Even if IND is shot for 150 deficit, they can come back if pacers can dent SAF top order enough by day 2 (& 3rd morning) with new ball; in that case game shouldn’t last full 4 days; but if SAF ends day 2 with 1/2 or max 3 down and a decent lead - game over.

Dissapointed with Kohli’s captaincy to be honest; Rahne is a better user of fast bowling.

Great to see some enthralling Test cricket.

Can't remember the last time we had it.

Pitch does not look difficult. If batsmen are watchful, it should be easy to stay and score.

Pujara has to bat well and get a big score here.

India will need an epic block-a-thon from Pujara tomorrow so the ball will become a bit older and this might give Rohit a chance to play his natural game.
India also needs their tail to contribute as much as they can like the SA tail did.

Time to see if rohit sharma is fit for test cricket or not.Could literally make or break his test career tomorrow.

Indians are in a soup in this one !!!!! Not over yet though ..... these two at the crease can bat, Pujara more reliable, have to back it up now, having shot off his mouth before the match. Usually such words come back to bite you .... you know where !!!!!!!!

If Indians get bowled out around 150, the game is over. For next 2-3 days, this wicket will be flatter and bouncier - Perfect for SA batting

Just seen the highlights and what a brilliant day of cricket that makes test cricket what it is. The Saffers have the upper hand but if the Inds keep in the game they are still not out of it.

Rohit has scored against Starc, Hazlewood in ODI's in Australia. Yes, the pitches are flat there unlike in SA. So the chances are grim.

Like Varun said, Rohit's only chance to score runs is if he starts treating this match as an ODI. If he clicks, then he will score super fast. Playing defense is not his stronger suit. He will get out sooner or later.

The problem with that approach is that if he gets out playing loosely he will look like a complete numpty and someone may decide that test cricket is not for him.

Partially agreed. You need to be watchful for the first hour. Just look for singles. Then when the ball is slightly older, go for your shots.

Dhawan was trying to belt every delivery. Tried to play like QDK and failed miserably.

Vijay blocked and blocked and chased a wide delivery.

Kohli was looking to score of every ball. Somebody should tell him that this is not an ODI.

Idea should be to get to 200 first. India has a long tail that can bat decently. So one of Rohit or Pujara needs to score a big hundred. They will get enough support from the tail who can hang around with them.

If India can score 200, they will not be completely out of the game.

If Sharmaji has to play Test, he should adopt Sehwag style, preferably opening. Otherwise, whoever is behind this (Sharma over Rahne in ourside Asia Test - I do know Rahne’s recent figures .... in India against spinners) should explain that fair & frank.

LOL!! Indian fans back to earth!! Yes! Guys!! No mercy!! Really loving this!!

LOL! Some Indians fans are still hopeful! Like the spirit though! But seriously I don't see them scoring more than 200runs!! Humiliation is on it's way for HTBs

This seems to be bothering you more than Indians, stop being so butt hurt... No shame in losing to SA if it was the case as they have an amazing bowling attack..

2 quick wickets here should see the match getting decided here in hurry.

Okay patriot! Seems you are more hurt! Sorry for hurting your sentiemets patriot! Surely Indians would enjoy the beating!!
#no mercy
Destroye them!!yeaaaaaahhh

Going to miss this due to different time zone but hoping to see a fight from Indian players. Tomorrow's 1st session will be key and India will be pretty much done if they loose couple of early wickets at the start. Also, tail starts right from here with Saha. India needs close to 250 if they want to be in the game.

Nothing wrong with being humbled by this attack; one of the greatest that has ever existed and that too on a lively wicket. Just hoping Indian batsmen won't surrender that easily.

India's first day of this series reminds me of Pakistan's first day of the test series in South Africa in 2012
