What's new

South Africa vs India | 1st Test | Cape Town | Jan 5-9, 2018 | Day 1 | Discussion Thread

Only 7 overs and Indians are behaving like they have won the test match.

It's only 7 over but some people like u behave before the start of series saying indian geeting whitewash..that's what m saying whoever won the series but it's not one sided series as u assuming .

Meanwhile AB Devilliers is on 24 off 20. Heard there was a talk of playing Bavuma over AB in the morning lol.

Not often that the world's 3rd ranked all-rounder can't find a place in this team.

Every ball 8n that over was above 140.

I think its a legacy we carry from our not so glorious pace bowling past. I thinking they will have Fast Medium even for Phillander when he comes to bowl not that it means anything.

Looks like you're chest thumping to me. Both teams have to bat first before making any assertions. It wasn't even an hour yet you're already taking backhanded jabs

Indian bowlers are swinging the ball both ways, could be a tough series for openers. The surfaces at Highveld aren't gonna get any easier either.

Good start from India. Will be intresting to see how the Indian top order will do against Philander, Rabada, Morkel, Steyn and not to forget Maharaj who could be a handful, altough I dont think he will trouble the Indians to much.

Hmmm, had India batted first they would have been screwed.. This wicket is a tough one...

He is great with new ball if there is some help. Looks trundler when he has no help from pitch. But he will be imp with both bat and bowl in this series.

you are thinking of bhuvi of 2013. He is a.completely different bowler now. Added pace, reverse, bouncer. He takes.more wickets from the old ball

Will be intresting to see how india bowl with old bowl. With new ball bhuvi does job as always but if they cant pick wickets with old bowl then south africa might come back to the series.

Du plessis and ABD now gonna make a big score They had close misses edges missing bat, inside edges not hitting stumps etc but now they have settled and Bhuvi’s First spell is over so they will score a ton here...

Bumrahs short of length deliveries have been cutting away consistently and when he tried to get it full to get the edge, got driven handsomely for 2 boundaries.

A grassy pitch will increase India's chances as you bring their bowlers more into the game.

Good first session for the neutral so far.

Feel India should give Pandya a bowl here. AB and Faf might look to take him on resulting in a risky shot or two.

De Villiers is such class. Great to see him back in test cricket.

series? even first day of the first test isn't over yet.

Minnow basher. Returned to test cricket after 2 years to bash the likes of Pandya and Bumrah and inflate his avg.

This pitch will quicken on day 2, South Africa needs to survive the first hour with minimal damage.

Damage is done within first 15 min itself

Hope these 2 sticks their.....AB's counterattacking increasing my heartbeats though

Surely you must have more respect for this man?

My first feeling on bumrah is pretty bad

He looks clueless and frustrated in a condition where any fast bowler would love to debut

51 of just 55 balls on this surface is a good effort by AB. But he must kick on. 250 will be useful first innings total here.
This pitch won't flatten out any time soon.

Very good counterattack from AB De Villiers. India not controlling the rate here.

Too much width from Bumrah who has leaked runs this morning.

Hmmm, had India batted first they would have been screwed.. This wicket is a tough one...

Day 2 ain't getting any better, probably day 3 will be the ideal batting. But even then there's rain forecast, so who knows what the overhead conditions will have on the pitch.

He's still playing shots against bhuvi the best bowler on the turf so far to unsettle him

What a sight to see him get back into the white dress

FINALLY some good cricket on display. God. Have I missed good Test match cricket. The Ashes this year was more boring than a Bangladesh vs Ireland Test match being played in the UAE.

Excellent batting by the pair. If SA had one more batter they could have batted us out of this match. Still can if this partnership can play out next session.

Hard to tell what the pitch is like. AB and Skipper playing comfortably but 3 wickets fell in no time as well.

Brilliant batting by these two. This is what i was talking about show them their real worth.
#no mercy

Both batsmen, de Villiers & du Plessis have driven rather well through extra-cover on a seaming & swinging pitch today

Prodigious from both so far

Pitch looks helpful for batsman. All 3 wickets were just on new ball and africa didn't play first 15 - 20 overs well on other side bhuvi bowled great.

Ishant would have picked 1 or 2 wickets by now for sure! He is our veteran bowler in tests and has been bowling since ages (since the time of Dravid, Tendulkar...) He has seen all these conditions, should definitely be part of our Test team unless injured/unfit. We would have done well here with Ishant and Umesh in place of Bumrah & unfit Shami. We missed practice matches to find out who is doing what. Foolish ignorance by Kohli & Shastri to think that we don't need any practice and happy with the cheer-voices of net sessions!

Over and lunch 107/3. This might sound silly considering SA lost 3 wickets in the first session having elected to bat, but I'd say South Africa's session, just though.

I'm taking into account the nature of the pitch, and the runs scored. AB has played an incredible knock. He along with Faf have ensured SA have scored at 4 an over on such a surface. If they survive the first hour after lunch I'd say they are on top, based on what will happen tomorrow. It's been an absorbing session non the less. Indian bowlers have to back Bhuvi, he can't do it all on his own.

SA are 147 runs away from posting a competitive first innings total.

ok Rahane is out of form ( Rahane always struggled against spin at home even before this bad patch .But gun player out side subcontinent)

Rahul non selection is ridiculous ( before this test match he had world record of 7 consecutive half centuries in test cricket... proven player in all conditions)

during a preview show ...Grame smith has picked KL Rahul and kohli as dangerous players from India ..he also said if they want left hand combination of Dhawan in the team. Rahul should play in the middle order ..according to smith.. Rahul is one of the the best young talent in the world cricket)

Faf is a brave captain, he's exactly what we need. The Kingsmead pitch against NZ was greener than this, yet he elected to bat. Fair play to him.

But they have to start afresh after lunch and give the bowlers something to bowl at.

Ishant used to look ineffective only when he was playing all formats. Now that he is freed from LOIs he can be really effective in test matches! Thankfully we now have handful of bowlers to rotate! So he should be in our test team by default especially when it is required to bowl long spells!

I dont know why Bumrah was selected here.

He is a bowler who seams the ball a little.

Such bowlers generally find it difficult in SA.

Umar gul and junaid khan found it tough too on their last tour to SA.

Swing bowlers lile steyn, bhuvneshwar kumar, anderson etc thrive there.

Don't let them win a single session let alone the match. They are HTBs of highest level.Destroy them proteas.

South Africa have counterattacked spectacularly. Even though India are just an ABDV wicket away from getting back into the game, the way AbDV is batting, my sixth sense says he is not getting out today.

Good session to watch. Enjoyed it

I am interested to see Ashwin on this pitch. How will he bowl? Will his job be to contain or to get wickets?

I personally think he's the best Test skipper in the world right now. An absolute class.

Probably he should have been our coach... Kirsten as our coach was one of our bright periods. Shastri has a lot of love for Rohit and Dhawan. And we all know how sick he (along with Gavaskar) are sick of left/right hand combination! Kohli as captain could as much spoil Indian cricket as it did so good with his batting!

India missing tricks here with their selection.

Wonderful inning by AB but only if he converts this into 100. Dont recall him scoring big knocks when side is reeling at 20/2 or 20/3.

lol, the ball is still nipping around. Indian bowlers are getting the ball moving both ways.
Post the drinks break they've bowled a fraction short. That's due to AB counter attacking. They have to be brave and keep at it.

They must bowl fuller on this surface, back of a length isn't good enough on this surface. You have to be willing to concede runs to get wickets in South Africa. Pitch it up, yes the movement isn't as exaggerated as in the first hour, but it's still there. I'll also add that they've bowled a bit wide as well.

SA having scored much in terms of singles, they are putting the wide and loose deliveries away. Someone has to call AB's bluff and bowl full.

Ishant might have been better bowler on this pitch (with his all experience :mou) than Bumrah. Maybe They should have played Bumrah in 2nd test if some bowler didn't bowl that well.

Just looked at the squad. Honestly, this is absolutely hilarious. The Indian management is worse than that of Pakistan's. Like seeing Ashwin play over Yadav in South African conditions wasn't bad enough, they've chosen to play both Rohit and Dhawan in the same squad.

Dhawan doesn't have the eyes to last hear for more than 5 overs and we all saw what happened when Sharma last played in South Africa; couldn't get bat on ball for more than 3 overs! Why would you drop your best Test batsman in KL Rahul?!

The hopes of Indian batting rest on the shoulders of Vijay and VK. Pujara is a sitting duck in these conditions and the less said about "batsmen" like Saha, Ashwin and Pandya, the better.

Contain obviously. We are in South Africa, not India. He will be taken to the cleaner irrespective of what he does though. ADBV looks in terrifying form and feeding him an undercooked Ashwin will be lambs to slaughter.

Pujara has better stats than vk and vijay in africa.

No IMHO, it's just that he's bowled a bit wide. But Bumrah has got the ball moving both ways and is bowling quick. He'll be an asset in Pretoria and Jo'burg. Sharma will bowl back of a length and medium pace which will make it easy for the South Africans.
I like the make up of this Indian attack to be honest, perhaps a bit inexperienced, but I see them getting results for India away from home. Question is can the Indian batsmen give them something to bowl at.
