This is how it stands at end of Day 1

South Africa 286
India 28/3 (11 ov)
Stumps - India trail by 258 runs with 7 wickets remaining in the 1st innings

What can we expect from India batting today?

Minimum 2 practice matches were needed, but they preferred extended marriage celebrations over this! Kohli should have allowed at least his teammates to have match practice... Shastri is another guy who is more interested in chats and parties...

Even though there is a general sense of doom and gloom, lets see if India can be positive..

* Pujara will have to stay at the wicket as long as possible. Play out the overs, till the ball gets older and the conditions for batting gets better. He has to stay till the end.
* Rohit will have to bat like he does in ODI's... See of the new ball in the first 15 overs, slowly up the rate, and then go hammer and tongs later. Of course he has to survive the first hour somehow!
* Saha, Pandya, Ashwin - should look to score 20 runs atleast...
* Bhuv, Sam, Bum - Score 10 runs each.

(Woah! Basically Rohit-Pujara is the last batting pair out there!)

To a general layman it looks like South Africa need just one wicket to cut a swathe through this weak looking batting line up. Not looking good. Selecting a T20 team for a test match is never a good idea :yk3

Looks like Kohli is going to take us(India) to even greater lows overseas.Even though he is a good LOI player,He just doesn't have the temperament to battle it out in tough condition. Also selecting players on 'gut feeling' on a tough overseas tour is pretty laughable IMO.
I think India will get bundled out around 150-160 & SA running away with the match in third innings with Kohli looking absolutely clueless & out of depth as a captain.

One gritty partnership and India is back in it. I wouldn't write them off just yet...

I agree. If it had been Pujara and Rahane, India were more than in this. But for some reason, Kohli went for Rohit and Rohit is a disaster when it is seaming even a bit.

If it moves, it is harder for even great batters in the world to survive against Steyn, Rabada, Philander and Morkel.

Expecting Sharmaji to survive an hour and score big against them if it swings mile is a little too much IMO.

If South Africa wraps them till lunch (which looks most likely possible) we can see follow on and who knows they can wrap up this batting line up again in 60 overs? (unless we see good batting)

Rohit will be history within 2 overs. He is a walking wicket. Pujara will eventually get a good ball too.

This loss will give Shastri and Kohli a much needed reality check.

The first hour is key. If India lose a couple wickets early they will be rolled by lunch for sure.

Remarkable spell by Steyn in progress at the moment with Indian batsmen playing him like they would a spitting cobra! India holding on 37/3, still 249 runs behind SA in the 1st innings #SAvInd #Cricket

Sharma almost out there on the pull. But just misses the keeper.

They are playing very defensively, this is gonna serve them no cause. I am not saying to start hitting sixes just bit of aggression.

There should be bit of intent, they are letting the bowlers ball the length they want to bowl. Obviously one ball will get the wicket and the new batsman will be under extraordinary pressure.

India will be satisfied with the first hour of play. Danger was they'd be 5 down for 30 by now if Pujara and Sharma hadn't knuckled down. Gripping stuff.

Rohit sharma is known for throwing his wicket after getting set (specially in overseas tests).

Pujara is leaving the ball with such ease reminds me of Dravid.

Yes play with intent like Dhawan, Kohli and Murli Vijay

They are not getting any freebies so its not possible to score frequently against SA's top 4

I think india batted pretty well in first hour to take away the shine from the ball,as the day progresses batting will be easy

This is one of the greatest bowling attacks there has ever been, and by far the best ever 4 man pace bowling attack.

There is no respite for any of the batsman. The bowling is so brilliant. If Steyn and Philander don't get a wicket, in comes Rabada and then Morkel.

You are expecting too much from these batmen if you expect them to go out and play with intent. Surviving is good enough for now.

Both Pujara and Rohit have been very impressive today. Very hard to get going in these conditions and against this attack.

The bolded bit is hysterical rubbish. Unless Marshall, Roberts, Garner and Holding only played together in one's imagination.

It is so hard to really believe that this Pujara failed badly in previous overseas tours.

At times, you have to back players to come good based on their current form and not their CVs. Rahane has been brilliant overseas, but his batting is garbage at the moment and he seems to be in a bad place mentally.

On the other contrary, Rohit is playing the best cricket of his life and his confidence is sky high. He has already done better than what most people expected of him, and irrespective of how he does over the course of this series, Kohli and Shastri made the right call by rewarding good form.

If only Rohit could have scored aome runs after playing 59 balls the pressure might have been a bit less.

When you are already 3 down around 37 runs, I have rarely seen team scoring 300+ eith defensive intent. Atleast try to score at the SR of 50.

If survival for hour was good enough then great innings by Rohit

Lol! Commentator saying that Ashwin would gladly retire instead of facing this

Someone needed to an AB, but who do you target in this attack?

I don't think there should be any qualms about picking Sharma for this test, but questions need to be asked about why Ashwin is batting at 6 in these conditions. I don't think there is any considered thought being put into selection, it all seems hilariously superficial posturing from Kohli and Shastri in terms of "taking the game to the opposition", without actually understanding what that means.

Only Morkel has been under par this morning.

Sharma and Pujara did well.
Sharma at least tried and didn’t throw it away, it was superb bowling from Rabada.

I have never felt comfortable with the idea of Ashwin batting at 6. He is not a terrible batsman by any means, but him batting at 6 makes your batting look depleted.

To be honest its pretty depleted in reality, Saha and Pandya are also no world beaters.

Think we gonna lose this 3-0, before the series I had hope we might win the series but seeing the first two days and Indian batting i have been brought to reality about our batting overseas.. All the money being pumped and we still can’t dominate a game like cricket sad really..

Against whom would you show aggressive intent? One needs to have outrageous skills to do that. AB did it against a good attack but this attack is something else.

Even the greatest would find it hard.

It is depleted Pandya and Saha in overseas conditions in tests? You can play anyone of these 3 at number 6 and all would suck equally..

Rohit played beyond expectations tbh. I would still have Rahane ahead of him though.

Ashwin is not all rounder class and will never be a number 6. But India’s lower order is so bad that they can play them in any order : Ashwin, Saha, Jadu/Pandya/ Bhuv.
I really don’t see any difference between all of them in tests.
They all can bat but not good enough for top 7.

What a Kohli-esque decision to send Ashwin out.

When he was smacked on his finger first ball, he should have walked back retired hurt to let a REAL batsman come through - Saha.

To be fair, we're hardly alone in this. The 2010s are not an era where anybody can seem to perform away.

Lot has to go wrong if Rabada does not end with minimum 400 test wickets.

Let's not get carried away. Rabada is playing in all formats and is not as protected as Syeyn.
When he emerged SA had a plethora of all rounders the likes of Hall, Kallis, Kemp and decent bowlers Ntini, Morkel, Langaveldt etc. In his first three years he played Tests mostly and settled into Tests.
Rabada is being overworked, he plays all formats and then there's the blood! IPL which doesn't allow players to rest. It destroyed Parnell fledgling career and was never the same.
Rabada's work load has to be managed.

You need to be a class act to perform consistantly through out the test playing countries in different conditions. The only thing close to that in Indian lineup is Kohli.

Dont misunderstand me he is great but he cant handle any movement at all, though he can handle bounce and thus I said close to class act.

Otherwise no one in this team has the calibre or class to be called all time great test batsman.

Yes but 2010 was supposed to be our era the amount of money been put up in cricket in last 10 years and the amount of population who play cricket in our country we should dominate cricket like Australia or WI.. Remember England, Aus have multiple sports and SA and NZ are big in rugby and WI are moving to basketball, athletics whereas we have one major game cricket.. And we can’t use Pakistan’s excuse of not having funds since we really loaded..

Do you think the next generation 2025 onwards be any good?

Who knows? Test cricket is very attritional and merit based, and money power has little to do with it. Unless we use the money to fudge pitches overseas of course....glad we haven't gone in that direction.

rohit tried his best
but he has no technique
why r they going hell bent to make him play test cricket
just reserve him for odi and t20

Exactly. He can have a lot of time to earn money in later half of his career, his body and muscles are still developing, he shouldnt be playing IPL atleast for 3 years or so, he is just 21 his muscles are still developing.

With utterly convincing fends off the short ball and flying edges, lovely.

Runs are runs, no matter how they come. FZ's hundred in the final was one of the ugliest 100's I've seen, but it won us the Champions Trophy.

Nah bro, yes he was pretty ugly to start the innings but then he played some exceptional shots.

It can work in LoI, but here we're trailing by 200+ and we need someone to set up shop for the long-haul.

As a fan it is frustrating growing up we had no hope of ya winning so when Sachin used to perform well overseas and show fight it used to bring happiness to us even in losses..

Apart from nearly winning in Australia during 2003-04 tour when Buckner cheated us out of winning the series and some fights in England, SA we have been terrible especially lately.. Wasn’t our overseas record something like 0-8 or 0-13 last time we toured overseas? And now we have to endure same old crap..
