South Africa vs India | 1st Test | Cape Town | Jan 5-9, 2018 | Day 2 | Discussion Thread

This eerily reminds me of Yusuf Pathan's 105 in SA where entire top order collapsed and he almost pulled off the match.

Pandya is playing a good knock kudos to him and he should thank dean Elgar for that drop catch

I did not expect this. Taking calculated risks on a surface like this against 4 hostile bowlers. May be his inexperience somewhat helped him. Probably didn't overthink. Already done more than expected from him. This is one of those tests where you have to keep forgetting the previous ball. Otherwise you will be screwed up.

It happens many times across all formats to every team.

The top order struggles and when the lower-order comes in they play without any fear and lo and behold they have more runs than the frontline batsmen.

Some of our resident Pandya critics might be drowning in the flood of their tears. I don’t think I need to tag them, they know who they are.

Still overrated well mamoon your like that always praise other players let him play 4 5 away matches one lucky innings with 2 chances missed doesnt make him any good

Chuckling at the chats between Kumar and Pandya between balls.

Man of the Series against Australia was a fluke?
Century in Sri lanka against Hearth was a fluke?

Mishra scored 86 in England Agarkar 100

Who would have thought pandya will make 80* after seeing him in first over against steyn?

This is how it has to be done! Not just ultra-defensive way (Pujara & Vijay), you need to keep scoring to put pressure (see how Steyn is tired now) For a No.7 bat Pandya is doing so much better. That's why guys like Rahul & Rahane are needed in these conditions to complement Pujara & Vijay (as we don't have better than these bats anyways) these guys can score in these conditions with measured aggression

Pandya has put some life in the game. Virat has started howing some emotion in the dressing room.

South Africa still on top and they have best use of the pitch to pile on the lead. They just need one wicket to polish off Sami And Ishant. Then they can bat 1.5 days and give India a target to chase.

ahem! Can Pandya get a 100? It would be an epic knock in the context of the game...

Decent comeback after that blockathon by top order batters. We still trail by 100 not sure how long can these two carry on post tea, we had a mini collapse straight after lunch hoping it doesn't repeat again!

Best case scenario we get over the trail completely.

Steyn taken to hospital for a scan on his left heel.

I know its horrible thing to say but we really really need South Africa one bowler down. So that we have to face less of premier fast bowling in second inning and have some chance of scoring.

Bhuvi has luck of the cat. I think he missed edge at least 25% of the balls he has faced.

Just goes to show a bit more application from the top order last night and India would have had a great chance of getting a lead here. 50-60 more runs from here and it gets really interesting.

And SA are finally using their bowlers to test Pandya's short ball defence. He can bash those balls on slow pitches but don't thing he can here.

Shami is not a defender. He is an Avenger. Let's hope some tail protection from Pandya.

Pandya has played very well today. He rode his luck. Was dropped and the ball missed his edge many times but he has played a gutsy knock.

How fitting that he played such an innings on Kapil Dev's birthday. Shades of Kapil's own 129 out of 215 in the '92 Port Elizabeth Test.

Pandya often finds himself in situations where he has nothing to lose for example 7 down or i down. This is a time where he can go after the bowling and maximize the runs and hence his natural stroke play helps him , for which he should be given credit.

However it would be interesting to see him bat in challenging conditions when all is not lost and there is plenty of batting left for India. Will he play his natural game and go after the bowling in such a situation? I expect him not to do that and that would be the time when his defensive technique (average by the look of it) would be tested.

Just wondering - who is our night watchman from this line-up if we ever need it this series?

Normally it's Ishant...

Boundary!

Come on, frustrate the hell outta them.

Pandya will be tested. Maybe africa didn't work on him (just worked on top order) but after this innings i don't think they will give him this easy runs.

Shami trying everything to get an edge but looks like he don't have luck for it.

I hope Pandya has had a positive psychological impact on the rest of the Indian batsmen that this SA bowling attack can be ground down. The batsmen need confidence to do well in this series.

Will be tested when india has to play for draw against quality side.

Brilliant inning from Pandey. He is the Dev version of batting. The guy has stomach to fight. He has taken a good stride with this inning and has it to make it to test class level as an established player.

India need quick wickets, need to have them 4-5 down today for no more than 70 runs to have a chance.

Credit where it's due. Pandya played a face saving knock. The inning was gutsy but not orthodox. He had luck but capitalized on it and it counts much in cricket than going without any intent. He is definitely not a test material but has given India something to be proud about for losing gracefully.

Why India don't deserve to win, 77 run deficit notwithstanding:

1) Rahul/Rahane/Ishant benched to play white ball bashers and a debutant who hasn't played FCC in 12 months. Not even a two-day warm-up match.

2) Whether or not net sessions are better than warm-ups, coming earlier and not prioritising this series over meaningless bilateral ODIs to acclimate. If Shastri and the team believe this is a defining period for India, it isn't clear in how they've approached their first competitive tour in years.

3) Some awful shot selection.

Why I think India should win:

I'm behind them, even if I want Amla, ABD & Steyn to show they're still world class.

So you are trying to say that this South African side on this south african pitch is not a quality side? huh!!! theres a limit to bias!

He means when India would have to play for draw i.e. survive a session or an hour more with say 5 wickets left.

#Pandya

Pitch has eased down which means SA will look to really set a 400 run target for Indian team to chase.

SAF has got IND at the worst position they could have asked for - a significant lead and they'll bat for the best period of the Test. Also, if 25 overs are bowled today, Indian pacers'll be bowling with a old Kookaburra for first 2 session of Day 3. Pandeya did a great job by scoring first, otherwise it could have been worse - 150 all-out in 70 overs and SAF coming 2nd time when wicket is at it's best for batting.

We need atleast 3 today most importantly keep the scoring at check. There's some rain predicted for tomorrow ...

In what way the situation in this match (the innings he played) any lesser than the context that you and he has mentioned?

I hate watching this innings of the game.

This is typically where we get pounded into submission.

I say get Pandya to bowl. Might get the breakthrough, it's been his day.

They are two different things not comparing them. It was a great knock. Here we are talking about completely different situation. This was a nothing to lose like situation for him. You know the game is already done and not much can you do about it while in other case it could be anyone's game(the one who handles pressure better and ofcourse the demand of situation could be different from his style of play too at that time.)

Now I am not judging him because he is too early in his career but in a long career he will face different kinds of situation and will be tested several times. That's the only point. Not being harsh or over demanding on the lad.

The only point there was it will be interesting to see how or whether he will adjust his game plan when he will be required to change his aggressive style of play and play attritional cricket to save a match. It wasn't about scoring against quality attack or not. It was a top notch attack itself what else one would want.
