Currently 12th on the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League standings, Sri Lanka will hope they can get the crucial 10 points in the third and final ODI against India.

Overview:

Sri Lanka vs India, third ODI
R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo
23 July, 03:00 PM local

Sri Lanka have many reasons to be optimistic about their chances in the final ODI after an improved performance in the second match. Though they struggled in the middle overs while batting, the bowlers, who looked hapless in the first game, almost took the home side to victory.

All eyes will be on Wanindu Hasaranga who was been Sri Lanka's standout player for some time now. Dasun Shanaka might look to make a change or two in the misfiring middle-order, though more would be expected of the captain himself in the middle overs.

In his first series as captain, Shikhar Dhawan will be hoping to complete the whitewash. With the series already wrapped up, the Indian side have room to experiment in the final game, but cannot let complacency set in.

After winning the game for India with the bat, more will be expected from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Deepak Chahar, especially after going wicketless in the Powerplay in both ODIs.

Remember the last time:

After opting to bat first, Avishka Fernando and Minod Bhanuka provided Sri Lanka with a solid start, once again rendering India's Powerplay bowling ineffective. A twin strike from Yuzvendra Chahal brought India back into the game and the visitors dominated the middle overs.

Chamika Karunaratne came to Sri Lanka's rescue with a 33-ball 44, thus taking the home side to 275/9 in 50 overs.

Sri Lanka's decision to introduce spin early on in the innings proved to be a masterstroke as Hasaranga removed Prithvi Shaw before he could inflict much damage. The home side kept picking wickets at regular intervals as India found themselves 116/5.

Suryakumar Yadav's maiden ODI fifty and Krunal Pandya's gritty innings helped India keep the chase on track but once both were dismissed, things looked bleak for India.

That's before Deepak Chahar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar strung a run-a-ball 84-run partnership and turned out to be unlikely heroes with the bat for India as they chased down a target of 276 with three wickets in hand.

What they said:

Shikhar Dhawan (India captain): "I felt that the way Sri Lanka planned their innings, batting and bowling - they brought the spinner on early - and the way they fielded was good to watch and learn. They worked very hard but glad that we're on the winning side. Every game whether we win or lose, it's a learning. We are also going to get better."

Dasun Shanaka (Sri Lanka captain): "I think we started really well today. The middle period we lost wickets; I think the thing we shouldn't do in the next game is give them easy wickets. We should bat well until the last powerplay."

I hope Shikhar sits out this match. this way Bhuvi can make his debut as India captain and DDP can make his debut as India player. Also hope India bat fist this time around. Though I know the former is unlikely to happen.

Sanju Samson, Nitish Rana, Chetan Sakariya, K Gowtham, Rahul Chahar
All making debut today.
Well done Dravid, giving chance to all players in a dead rubber and trying out different options.
Wish Paddikal was selected instead of Samson who is useless i believe.

5 new caps for us...
Nitesh, Gautam, sakariya, samson, and rahul chahar

Dang...!....
I was so looking forward to Namma Paiyyaan - Devdutt Padikkal and Varun Chak ....really would have been so exciting...but any ways...
But good to see Rahul Chahar get a Gig...this guy is senior team material..

Go Indiaaaaaaa!!!!:Dah:

Would have liked to see Paddikal and Varun Chakravorthy play too. It's a meaningless match for us.
Saini playing is still bad news.

Why? I thought Saini is a good option and adds some much needed pace to push their top order onto the back foot...
I think DP and VC will get their chances in T20 series.

they will play T20s for sure

Why is Devdutt Padikkal not playing? This is a travesty. Rahul Dravid should have insisted on his selection especially since Padikkal is from the same school as Dravid and Robin Uthappa. Happens to be my alma mater too.

Dhawan's reaction after winning the toss for the first time

I guess Namma Huduga - Paiyyaan will be in the T20's....
So a banglore boy - St joseph's...:):salute

Dushmanta Chameera is such an awesome sight to behold......full flowing action, terrific follow through....he came through in 2015 along with Rabada and Mustafizoor...and on that NZ tour , i thought this guy was the next super star of SL cricket...sadly injury prone...i hope SL cricket manage him well through his injuries...i guess a spot of county cricket would stand him in good stead....
He has the basic potential, the pace, needs to pitch it up a tad further.....but i guess if SL handle him and lahiru kumara properly, they have the potential for a good pace attack....

Good that Dravid is not biased that way.

Paddikal will play T20s

He might get a longer run in t20s, but I hope he does not get stereotyped as a t20 player

You can see Mickey Arthur is an emotional guy and shows it, but looking at his reactions it could lead to a toxic environment

Solid start India.

Sri Lanka already looking rattled.

@ this stage the Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony looks a more exciting prospect to fill the relentless march of time :afridi

Shaw is so vulnerable with incoming delivery and plays across the line to get lbw now.

Sanju looks in a good touch and delightful against spinners. Ishan was like a cat on hot roof

If Sanju finally delivers on his potential, and Pant and Ishan kick on, then India's wicketkeeping situation should be sorted for years to come.

100 there for the taking for Samson. He won't get a better opportunity than this

Sanju is a great outfielder, better use him there if there's another keeper in the xi..

Sanju looks a million dollars playing those effortless shots but his List A and FC record keeps be sober in terms of expectations. Still, he is useful.

Lol, what just happened there.

It never looked out from naked eyes. Clearly outside off it was.

Comedy of sorts. Srilanka was celebrating and dharmasena had to reverse decision.
Surya looks bit complacent , should use this luck and get a good score

Sanju and Kishan both are better prospects for T20s than in ODIs.

Pant and KL are both superior batsman qualitatively and are better prospects for all formats.

Match delayed - India are 147 for 3 with 27.0 overs left

still feel Chameera is so under rated as a bowler...(but even as i speak, surya gets a boundary off him)

Ball is turning and Indian batsmen looked clueless. Newcomers wasted their opportunity. Not one played with responsibility.

The approach is fine but they went too ahead by making 5-6 changes.

Manish Pandey might be playing his final LOI match today as he has failed to grab any of the three chances and doesn't bring anything extra to the table like Shaw, Kishan, Samson and SKY do.

Very disappointed with K Gowtham. Terrible batting. I don't see any of these new comers making it to the main squad.

Shaw, Hardik, Dhawan and SKY are the only ones that will be in the main squad. The rest will be warming the bench or play in IPL. They need to up their game if they want to play for India again.

Manish Pandey should have played his last game for us at least 5 years back!

Disappointing performances apart from the first odi. I thought this team has the ability to challenge mid ranked teams but looks like they won't even be able to best bangladesh full strength team.

These guys perhaps don't understand they won't get too many chances when the main guys return.

They should have tried Paddikal too. We have enough backups though.

Rohit
Kohli
Dhawan

Backups - Shaw, Gill, Kishan, Paddikal

Rahul
Pant

Backups- SKY, Shreyas

Pandya
Jadeja

Backups- Axar, Washington, Krunal

Aside of these, there is no point giving any chance to anyone. Rather give more chances to these names only.

Pandya has been very disappointing entire series.

Pandya has been very disappointing entire series.

I would say disappointing career so far. Averages just 32 with the bat and 41 with the ball in ODI's. His test career already looks over because of him not bowling in that format. I think he enjoys playing in T20s only. :inti .

Good to see Pandya bending his back and bowling fast again. A bit expensive but one step at a time.

Sri Lanka's match to lose. These two are playing very well. Pandya has given 23 runs in 2 overs. :inti

He should practice more in the nets. He is rightfully taken away from the attack. Gave 23 runs in 2 overs. Momentum is with Sri Lanka now. :inti

Its a dead rubber and hence we are playing 5 debutants that too from the B squad. Bowling in nets in fine but getting play time in the middle is precious. An all rounder Panyda is key to our chances in T20 WC and him bowling again with pace is always good news.

He may be key to our chances in T20 WC but this is an ODI series and he is a pretty average bowler in ODIs. Even Ganguly had much better stats in ODIs than Pandya as a bowler. We need a specialist at this position. His itsy bitsy performances in ODI's won't help the team in the long run. :inti
