What's new

Sri Lanka defeat Australia by 163 runs in 3rd Test - Win series 3-0

Dustbowl is something which Westerners call all Asian pitches barring few (they even call flat tracks that spin big last 2 days as dustbowls).....and our gullible desis have meekly accepted their definition and keep spouting the same.

Dustbowl is a track that spins BIGGG. Almost from day 1.

For example in the SA-India series, Nagpur was a pukka dustbowl rank turner. Mohali wasn't so much but it was close to it (made worse by ridiculous batting by both sides). Delhi and Bangalore were proper tracks where good spin playing teams can rack up 400+.

When we played SL in SL.....Galle was the biggest turner but even that wasn't a rank turner. A very good spin track though.

Against Eng.....Mumbai was a rank turner (even that eased out in the middle but overall was a rank turner cos it spun crazy later on). Ahmedabad was a slow turner and Kolkata was a good spin pitch with reverse. Nagpur of 2012 was a slow scoring patta.

Thanks. But you think those pitches that you mention really dust bowls? Or just inept batting by the visitors (and sometimes home side as well) and (I was gonna say DRS....)
Even for Indian test batsmen I am left with the distinct impressions that the current generation does better against pace vs spin

While batting techniques against spin seem to have deteriorated we shouldn't forget the impact of DRS. Batsmen can't get away with padding up to spinners so the old ways of negating spin don't work.

Beecharay English and Aussies can't bat on it = horrible dustbowl that is terrible for cricket

Oh yeah, I look forward to all the people who cry about Mankading to rant about how Nevill's stumping went against the spirit of cricket and he should have given the batsman a warning first.
That's kinda my point. I cannot recall a true raging turner that Pakistan has played test cricket on for the last decade. So do they really exist or only in the minds of the firungi teams.

Yeah, I don't think Pakistan have played on any of those in forever but that is helped by the fact that we haven't been to India. India has rolled out a couple of those for visiting teams, like the test that Michael Clarke took 6 for 9 or whatever it was, but I don't think it's nearly as common as the crying tourists would have you believe.

Inept batting makes even relatively easy pitches look like a minefield.

But Nagpur 2015 (SA), Mohali 2015 (SA), Mumbai 2012 (Eng), Chennai 2013 (Aus) and Delhi 2013 (Aus) were rank turners.

That's for sure.

Chennai, Mumbai - Over 300+ was scored in first innings by BOTH teams but it was turning.

Australia of all people made 363 in Chennai rank turner. Then they crumbled in Hyderabad which was a good spin track only. lol.

Just goes to show...if you put your mind into it, you can do it.

Actually all the pitches listed above, 300+ first innings score could have been scored in first innings. These days, batsmen are too phattu and blame everything on the pitch.

But they were rank turners just like Lord's 2014 was a green track even though India made 300 odd in first innings.

Rest of the pitches....not so much.

Just decent to good spin tracks.

Current Indian batsmen are no good at spin. Breaks my heart but its the truth. Addition of Rahul is better cos he plays spin well. If Pujara or someone else comes in and plays spin well, then it would be better.

No...Pakistan didn't play in any rank turners in recent times. Its hard to remember the last time Pakistan played in a rank turner.

Talk seems to be that Shaun Marsh will get dropped after this test

SIF do you think this is the weakest era of batting against spin? The likes of Dilruwan Perrera and Jadeja are picking 10 fers while Likes of Yasir, Ashwin, Herath end up home series with ridiculous numbers 25 @ 15 is their standard series returns in Asia. Its making modern spinners look better then what they are.

Thoughts?

Dilruwan Perera already has 600+ FC wickets and he is the fastest SL bowler to take 50 wickets. He is a good bowler, very orthodox and doesn't look cool when he flights it.

There are also a lot of Herath Mudiyanselage's that play cricket.

Herath Mudiyanselage Rangana Keerthi Bandara Herath

Herath Mudiyanselage Charita Malinga Bandara

Herath Mudiyanselage Waruna Asiri Priyadharshana Herath

Herath Mudiyanselage Thilina Imendra Herath

Siththa Brahakmana Herath Mudiyanselage Walawwe Buddika Thaminda Bandara Ellepola

Y'all sinhalese people need new names. Why do names like Malinga, Herath, Silva, Fernando, Kusal/Kaushal and Mendis are so popular ?

Mitchel Starc has been a revelation in this series. The guy is definately the best fast bowler in the world right now and the fastest bowler in the world as well.

Apart from that the Australians have been thoroughly outplayed in this series, they had many opportunities to capitalize and crush the opposition but they squandered those moments every time.

Put the following names into cricinfo's search bar and you get:

de Silva - 214 results
Fernando - 253
Perera - 309
Mendis - 56

You could make five Sri Lankan XIs picking only guys named Mendis :))
How about number of Kumars, Singhs and Mohammads?

Would be shocked if Australia chase this total. Australia had a big chance when they reduced SL to 26-5, or when they themselves were going strong with Marsh and Smith, but SL to their credit have got back in the game at crucial times.

SL have shown a backs to the wall resilience that I honestly didn't expect after seeing them crumble at key moments in England and in their home season last summer.

A whitewash is the best bet. What a boon this could be for SL cricket.

There are also a lot of Herath Mudiyanselage's that play cricket.

Herath Mudiyanselage Rangana Keerthi Bandara Herath

Herath Mudiyanselage Charita Malinga Bandara

Herath Mudiyanselage Waruna Asiri Priyadharshana Herath

Herath Mudiyanselage Thilina Imendra Herath

Siththa Brahakmana Herath Mudiyanselage Walawwe Buddika Thaminda Bandara Ellepola

Oh my. To be fair we have our share of Sharmas, Kumars and Singhs.

Asian specialist.

What do other Aussie fans think about this?

Shaun Marsh is a whipping boy so nobody cares too much about him in particular but nobody likes the idea of home track bullies getting protected like that and brought back for easy runs.

The problem here is that Shaun Marsh certainly can't open the batting in Australia which is why he bats at 5 for WA

Gutsy knock from Silva. Karuna looked decent as well before stupidly giving it away again. Hopefully they use the break to sharpen up their game. From here on if Herath and co can take ten wickets today SL should be able to take this one out I would reckon. On another note de Silva has been the only one who has looked comfortable against Starc. Yesterday came up against Starc with the new ball as well and got behind the line nicely. So maybe it might be a good idea to give him a go at three in the upcoming ODI series to see if he’s up for it. That way there’s at least some sort of a backup for a top order spot going into the SA series.

Never thought i'd see the Australians intentionally waste their time taking drinks break, changing shoes and etc.

The Australians aren't going to play for a draw, they can't afford to, they will go for the win.

Mitchel Starc's brother is at the olympics.

They should have kept on batting and scored as many as possible. No need to take any risks, can't let the Aussies win. :lara

Should have let Lakmal open with the ball.

Neither Kusal Mendis or De Silva has eye catching FC stats but they both are top run scorers in this series.

Technically, Warner's Australia's best player of spin. Just needs to apply himself. Needs more experience batting in the cauldron.

I feel, Aussies are going for the chase. 324 in 83 overs is tough, but I guess for Aussie team, surviving 83 overs is tougher - so they are going after it.

I would have not declared. Aussies, esp Warner, will go with nothing to lose attitude like we did in Sharjah and may hunt this down. Series is won anyway by SL... so why not just keep batting instead of declaring?

AUS'll lose this Test. Now the ball is new & coming on to bat. Besides, this wicket has gone through rolling twice this morning, therefore it's nice & flat now. After lunch, with a 35 overs old ball, it'll look like wicket every over.

Anjelo already has put a long-off, though.

Anjelo is happy that his offies is bowling maidens to those lefti pairs.

So aus win could end pak hopes of number one Test position?

Australia are definitely going for the target by the looks of it. SL need to get Warner out ASAP!!!

Aus is looking for a successful chase, well it's good. They should at least try for it.

LOL

One wicket was all that it needed.

Mitch Marsh is probably good for 30 odd but apart from that it's over.

Need to get Bancroft and Handscomb in the team for the tour of India

Looks like a win for SL or a draw now, which means pakistan will be ranked number 1 for a short while at least.

The highest succesful chase at this ground in the 2000's was 172 runs in the 4th innings

5 down, may be an extended tea & I'll get some sleep. Knew this wicket'll crumble after lunch, but Aussies are surrendering without a fight.

Technically, Henrequies is stumped; why it's given as run out? He wasn't attempting any run.

Am confident that your team Bangladesh would whitewash the Aussies to, they won't tour there anytime soon and security etc will be used as an excuse to avoid going there

So all we need is rain in WI and we are all set for No 1 Ranking in Tests. :D

rain dance begins.

Actually, spin playing capacity is lowest in the history of the game & I have seen filmed cricket from 1900s. I can safely say that 3 WKs of 90s Moin, Mongia & Kalu would have easily been among top 10 spin players now. Apart from Herath, none of these spinners would average below 60 in 90s. I mean, if Moeen can make Indians bunny, Aussies are actually playing better on this wicket. Apart from PAK, don't think any team'll chase 200 even against BD on 5th day turner. PAK, that too as long as YK & Misbah is there.

It's like a horror show - chance in every ball. 7 down.

I amend my post - it's like wicket every ball.

This performance is so horrendous, you can't even say 'Back to the Drawing Board' to Australia

Oh my ,Aus had lost only 1 test to Lanka prior to this series and now :)))

In history, this is 5th time AUS had been swept blank.

4-0 against SAF '69-70
3-0 against PAK '82-83
4-0 against IND
2-0 against PAK &
this one.

It's their good fortune that IND-AUS 5 Test Series are not happening there anymore & PCB'll keep arranging 2 Test Series at home.

Complete embarrassment. 9 test losses in a row in the subcontinent. 7 if you don't count UAE but you should anyway.

Amazing performance from Sri Lanka. Youngsters performed at different points in the series and Based Herath was the pillar as always. Kusal Mendis, Dhananjaya De Silva, Sandakan are very promising youngsters. Kaushal Silva showed his class too.

Spectacular failure from Oz. Love it! :D

What is really interesting is that NZ have been decent in Asia compared to Australia but have lost to them them to them home/away. Really puts into perspective the non linearity of cricket.

Yeah. Funnily enough in 2011, we had a weaker team and the pitches were tougher to play on in Oz but we managed to win a test and draw the series. We went with a stronger team to Oz recently but lost badly and lost at home again with the team underperforming.

We are yet to win a series in India and South Africa and it looks tough with the rebuilding going on. Williamson is a good captain but he is new so we might be in for a thrashing. Then again, who knows we might shock them too especially Saffers who are missing AB.

aussie fans going gaga in cricinfo ,twitter and various fb pages about the pitches and how asian teams will never win abroad as long as they prepare these type of pitches

Well done to Sri Lanka.

Time to start ignoring runs at home when selecting batting lineups for Asia.

1. Warner
2. Bancroft
3. Smith
4. S.Marsh
5. Handscomb

has to be the top 5 to tour India

Congrats Sri lanka, i didnt think they would win a test in this series let alone the series, After the slow start in 1st test they have spanked the Aussies who look really clueless in these conditions.
