"Kumar Sangakkara walks out, cool as an ice-box. South African fans usher him in with generous applause"

South African fans in Galle? You mean like the Barmy Army?

Pretty poor from Lanka, they should have wrapped the Saffers for under 300, instead they're more or less staring down the barrel now and can hope for a draw at best.

If Philander keeps bowling this short with his pace, he is going to get smashed all over the park.

some of the balls have turned and bounced , batting can get tricky as the game progresses. , Lanka need to make first innings count.

Mahela Jawardene has become so useless...its a good thing he is retiring, otherwise he would have been dropped. The worrisome thing is that apart from Mathews there is really no good batsmen coming up the ranks.

Mathews on course for another gutsy hundred while all around him his team-mates fail

Lanka probably have to bat really well on last day to save this , it will be tough against SA bowling.

Unlucky Mathews. What SL need now is to bat on and on on day 4. Try and take 10 overs from the game. Herath will be key. If he gets wickets, then we'll come into the game.

Steyn bowled really here. Needs to wrap up SL last wicket quickly and then score some quick runs.

The word great is so often overused but Dale is a great bowler in every sense of the word and an all time great.
Great bowling.
That aside this test match is still hanging in a balance with a draw being likely.
A pity we lost wickets on day 1 (from a dominant position) as we would have upped our rate on day 2 n declare a bit earlier.

And a special mention to Mathews, a player I never had a lot of time for, but averaging close to 50 is no joke flat decks or not and he was superb in England. Averages 50 batting @6 with over 2000 runs, amongst the most prolific scores in that position in the history of the game. Those are handy runs

The boys need to get a move on (wicket or not). I would have opened with AB someone who can score quickly without taking to many risks. I've seen Australia open with Gilly.

good session for the boys despite losing 2 wickets this pitch is turning square. A draw could be out of the equation if rain stays clear. We should not worry about the rate and run the risk of getting skittled cheaply. We still need to put the bad balls away though. Once the lead swells past 300 then we can play our shots.

with a lead of 245 and 57 overs remaining today, there is no reason to play defensive and slow. I would aim for 3 runs per over for the next 10 overs and then go all out guns blazing. sri lanka will not be able to chase anything above 320. south Africa should play attacking cricket, play to win the game .

they need to leave 25-30 overs to bowl today if they want to go for the win, preferably 30. which means they have around 27 overs to bat. that should be the game plan

This pitch is spitting Cobras now, is anyone watching? Or busy posting rubbish?
What a game!

This pitch is spitting some venom, no need for SA to do anything stupid.
Sri Lanka will instinctively come out playing for a draw which will work in SA and Tahir favour.
It won't be easy batting 110 overs on this surface.
The best way to play Tahir is to attack him, so playing him defensively will work in his favour as he will settle into a length. Then there is Styeyn and Morkel

Will Steyn give Philander credit when accepting his man of the match award?

Meh.. He'll thank Elgar and JP for compiling 400 and giving him something to bowl at.
Or maybe Elgar and co. could thank Lanka for bowling rubbish?

Let's give credit when its due, South Africa have dominated this game from day 1.

Lanka have enough time to get the runs but SA also has enough overs to bowl Lanka out. I thought we would bat for 60 overs at 4 to the over today, instead we faced 51. That's very bold and refreshing.
410 or 370 with 10 extra overs, 40 runs won't be enough anyway if they are within that target with wickets in hand. Good declaration

Sri Lanka needs to attack Tahir.

He's a weak point if you get him off his lines.

Won't be easy on this raging pitch though.one wicket could open the flood gates. But its all about risk vs reward, to attack seems like a viable option. But will they dare?

I don't they will but it's what they need to win.

On this wicket Steyn and co will defend this. Unless Tahir is rendered a liability which will force Amla to over bowl his main bowlers or bowl part timers.
