Support for Pakistan in India during ICC World Cup 2023

After ICC intervened, otherwise Pakistan would have arrived this morning.

You really think ICC can force the Indian government?

Issue was something else.

BCCI had been informed by the Ministry of Home Affairs that security clearance would be needed for teams like Pakistan and Afghanistan. And even at the fastest it may take close to a week to issue visas.

Hence BCCI and ICC started the visa process in August. PCB as per their own admission submitted the application on 19th September.

What transpired between August end and September 19th?

Pakistan had demanded that they be exempted from submitting their passports for visa issuance. The demand was rejected.

Hence PCB felt slighted and tried to make it an issue. By the time ICC was informed visa process was already completed as pakistanis got their approval the same day.

Now I am highly suspicious that there may be players playing in Pakistan cricket team that don’t have Pakistan passports. Probably illegal Afghani players.

No, I think the reason was because a few of the Pakistani players like Babar, Rizwan etc were in Sri Lanka for past 2 months. First for test series, then SPL and then Asia Cup. When in foreign country they need to have their passports with them. Maybe due to this PCB wanted an exemption.

There are rumours on social media that cricket chacha was detained at hyderabad and asked not to waive Pakistani flag. Later he was released but police held his flag till the team left Airport.

Muhammad Rizwan says, whenever we meet Indian people anywhere in the world, they always welcome us and talk to us nicely. When we came to Hyderabad, we got goosebumps seeing the reception of the crowd. It felt like we're in Karachi or Lahore

"Even the Indians we meet outside India give us a lot of love; We see the same love in Indian hearts for us that we experience in Pakistan supporters; Things maybe different in the outwards sense but things are not the same on the ground."

"If you see how we were greeted when we arrived and came out of the airport and heard the roar outside, we felt as if we had returned to Karachi or Lahore after winning the World Cup."

Will fans from Pakistan be able to attend the world cup, I remember during 2011 they allowed fans from Pakistan to travel/watch some games. Will it be the case this time around

Hyderabad is my city. Pakistan would perhaps receive the most enthusiastic support here than anywhere else in India and it is not some random coincidence that ICC planned for Pakistan to essentially stay here for over 2 weeks including playing their first two opening games of the main World Cup draw.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has taken up an issue relating to the prolonged delay in the issuance of Indian visas to Pakistani media persons and fans ahead of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 with the global cricket body, say well-informed sources on Saturday.

In an email, the PCB has asked the ICC to take prompt action on the visa policy so the media and fans can apply for Indian visas in a timely manner and can cover and cheer, respectively, the touring side, the PCB sources added.

"It is alarming that the media and fans are yet to be informed about the visa policy, as Pakistan have already played their first of the two warm-ups and will play their first fixture of the tournament against the Netherlands within a few days," the sources said.

"As per ICC rules, providing visas to the fans is mandatory," caretaker foreign minister Jalil Abbas Jilani stressed during a press conference in Islamabad.

I visited Hyderabad as a 9 year old back in 1996. Loved the place. Want to visit again someday, only this time to enjoy the food.

It sounds very cliched but I miss the old Hyderabad with less traffic and more greenery and moderate temperatures.

You said the last time you visited was back in 1996. It may as well be some 100 years ago. Hyderabad especially outside of old city has transformed beyond imagination. Old city feels like it is stuck in a time warp and not necessarily in a good way.

I remember when I was a kid going to the place where the current hi-tec city is and it was nothing but a whole bunch of rocks and hillocks. That place has now transmogrified itself into an IT behemoth.

Surprising that the PCB still believes that the ICC is this quick action organization with a lot of power. They just have to look at the ICC track record of do nothing, grab the money from BCCI but kissing their rear end modus operandi.

Not sure what actions of the ICC in recent times give PCB the idea that they will do something.

A fan of Pakistan Cricket Team has been spotted at Hyderabad Airport India, holding Pakistani Flag in hands.

When it was asked to Babar, about How much will the team miss Pakistan fans in the stadium?

BA: Unfortunately, we will be missing the fans. However, as far as I know, the games are all sold out so we will be playing in jam-packed stadiums. Although our fans will not be there, I know they will make sure their love is heard on social media. I have heard that the fans in India also show their love, although I have not experienced that as of yet but I am excited to play in India as well.

What do you think!! what can Pakistan expect in terms of support in India?

I don't know, but if the Pakistan games are sold out in India then it might be to root against the men in green. A crowd CAN make a difference in the morale of a given team. I don't know why India would want Pakistan to do well given the strained relations. Or, is the welcome in Hyderabad a false hope for Babar Azam's men and a different side would show in the form of the audience during the matches when it actually matters? It's like the Ashes when the Aussies are cordially invited for appearances and the British anchors get under their skin during those shows.

Anyway, I am only speaking in light of the political situation between the two countries. I, as a player, wouldn't fret over how much support I'd receive, but would rather block out all that noise and only focus on the game. Whoever is in the stands should be irrelevant, period.

Pakistan are playing on the soil of their arch rivals, not WI, SA, AUS, ENG etc. I'm just being a cautious Pakistan supporter. Don't expect a whole lot from the attendees.

There is no need. From what we've seen, there are going to be enough people to cheer for Pakistan. Not all Indians are stuck in 2008 and brainwashed by the BJP.

Since when? I thought the GOI didn't care about anyone and did what it had to?

Since government said they will give visas within a reasonable time and did that.

Unless there are compelling circumstances to deny any participating athlete visa, visas will be granted in a reasonable timeframe.

Indian newspaper claims up to a million fans were at the airport when Pakistan arrived in India. There is a news paper clipping doing the rounds.

In other news, check out the love England have received! Apparently England's journey to Guwahati didn't go as smoothly! 38 hours!

Two days before the start of the ICC Cricket World Cup, visas could not be issued to Pakistani journalists and cricket fans.

It became a mystery for Pakistani journalists and cricket fans to get Indian visas to participate in the ICC World Cup 2023.

According to the sources, the Indian government and the board have not yet given the visa policy to the private courier company, while the International Cricket Council (ICC) has emailed the BCCI several times regarding the visas of Pakistani journalists.

It should be noted that the match between Pakistan and Netherlands is scheduled on October 6, while Pakistani journalists have also booked hotels in Hyderabad for the first match.

Today's warm up was very instructive. The crowd was cheering for David Warner because he's a favourite in Hyderabad courtesy his role in SRH

After the match , Warner said it was like playing at home. In the other match , I'm sure fans would have come to cheer for Williamson who also has fans there due to the SRH association.

And these are only warmups.

So, a lot of fans in the big cities could be there to watch big IPL stars in Pakistan's neutral matches .

So, for example , Australia may get more support in Bangalore because there were Aussies who were associated with RCB in the past or just generally big IPL players like Maxwell.

There is hardly any support to pakistan there, most of the crowd was cheering for Australia.

Pleasantly surprised to see so many babar fans in India. It was funny to see ABD get booed when he came out to bat instead of babar. Every four babar scored was met with a lot of cheer and applause.

Heartwarming stuff all around

Babar azam is pretty popular in India. The misbah era killed interest and zest in Pak cricket. Babar rekindled that interest. And he is very humble non controversial with pleasant demeanor. No wonder he's popular in India. I personally lost interest in Pak cricket after all their stars left after the 2003 WC but Babar made him watchable and he's delight to watch. Lot of Indian folks from the 90s feel a similarity to babar and sachin - not cricketing comparison as no comparison really as sachin is otg - but more like in the 90s sachin was the only indian batsmen who carried his team and if he was out early more often than not the team lost. Plus he was such an average captain. Very similar to Babar in that aspect.

We've had a wonderful reception so far in India. I'm pretty sure we'll get that around our games as well, said Arthur.

“It's like we are at home,” Pakistan skipper Babar Azam overwhelmed by warm reception in India

Pakistan cricket team landed in India last week to take part in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, starting on October 5.

The squad, led by Babar Azam, arrived in Hyderabad via Dubai and received a warm reception from the Indian fans outside the airport.

The Pakistani players soaked in the welcome and waved to the fans before boarding their bus to the hotel, where they were also given a rousing welcome by the staff.

On the eve of the World Cup opener, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam said his team "was not expecting" the welcome they have received in India, claiming "it's like we are at home".

"I think the hospitality was nice - we were not expecting this, but I think the way people are responding towards our team, everyone enjoyed it," Azam said while speaking during the ICC's 'Captain's Day' event in Ahmedabad.

"We are a week in Hyderabad so it is not like we are in India, it is like we are home. I think it's a golden opportunity for everyone to give their 100 percent and enjoy the tournament."

The cricket world has been deprived of the fierce rivalry between India and Pakistan because of political tension between the two countries.

India and Pakistan haven't played a bilateral cricket since 2012-13. In this period, they've only clashed in multi-nation tournaments such as the World Cup and the Asia Cup.

"The moment we landed in Hyderabad, the way people welcomed us from the airport to the hotel and even on the ground in the last (warm-up) match, we felt good," said Babar.

He added: "It would have been better if we had fans from our side. We will hope to get such support in every match, in every stadium, in every match."

While the players of other participating teams have the experience of playing on Indian pitches due to their appearance in the Indian Premier League, Pakistani cricketers are banned from taking part in the cash-rich league.

However, Babar Azam does not see this as a disadvantage in their World Cup planning.

"There is no pressure at all. The (India) conditions are similar to Pakistan and Asia," he said

"It's just that the boundaries are small here and the bowlers have little margin for error.

"It will big scoring and you will have to adapt to that. So we will have to play to the best of our ability and give our best shot."

Pakistan will open their World Cup campaign against the Netherlands at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad on October 6.

Pakistan has got huge support in India…majority of the Muslims in India cheer for Pakistan and Muslim population in India is more than the Pakistan’s. So you can imagine what kind of support they have…I strongly believe Pakistan can beat India in Ahmedabad because the pitch there is absolutely flat and ideal for pakistani batters….

With no visas issue to the Pakistani people, there won't be a lot of support for team Pakistan. It would be a a far better tournament if we see a few thousand people from Pakistan attending the Pakistan matches.

That's not true, except Kashmir, there is hardly anyone who supports Pakistan. They may get fair amount of support when they play against other teams (That too some parts of south India and West Bengal), but when it comes to against India, no one in India supports Pakistan except Kashmir.

I doubt you will see much public support for Pakistan in India even if there are fans who like them. We have seen students thrown out of college for supporting Pakistan in recent years, massive army crackdowns in Kashmir where Pakistan support is most vocal. This India govt is deeply paranoid, I don't think they would take kindly to any noticeable support for Pakistan cricket team considering their well publicised hostility to Pakistan in all spheres of life.

NEW DELHI, Oct 7 (Reuters) - The organisers of the 50-overs World Cup in India are working to secure visas for fans and media from Pakistan, the governing International Cricket Council (ICC) said after complaints from the Pakistan board.

Visas for the Pakistan team were granted barely 48 hours before they left for what is their first tour of India since the T20 World Cup in 2016.

Cricket has been a victim of a soured political relationship between the neighbours and bitter rivals, who play each other only in multi-team events like the World Cup.

The Babar Azam-led team were pleasantly surprised by the warm welcome they received in Hyderabad, but they have lamented a lack of support from the stands as their fans remain stranded in Pakistan.

"This is an obligation of our host and they are working hard on it with our full support," an ICC spokesperson said in a statement to Reuters.

"Every effort is being made to get this sorted."

The Pakistan Cricket Board said in a statement on Friday that the visa delay had put the PCB "under immense pressure".

"PCB is disappointed to see that Pakistani journalists and fans are facing uncertainty about obtaining an Indian visa to cover Pakistan's opening game in the ICC World Cup," it said.

"Their presence not only adds vibrancy to the stadium but also contributes to the global coverage and appreciation of the game.

"We have been reminding ICC about their obligations and members' agreement on issuing visas for fans and journalists for the last three years and continue to raise concerns with all relevant authorities."

Pakistan began their campaign on the field with an easy victory over the Netherlands on Friday. They next take on Sri Lanka in a match between two former champions on Tuesday.

The 15-year-old schoolgirl from Bhopal was among the scattered group of Pakistan supporters at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium in Hyderabad as Babar Azam and Co took the field for their World Cup opener against Netherlands.

Alisha, a 15-year-old fan of Babar Azam, carries a photo of the Pakistan skipper in the back cover of her phone. The schoolgirl from Bhopal was among the scattered group of Pakistan supporters at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium as Babar and Co took the field for their World Cup opener against Netherlands. One of the world's leading batter, Babar has a wide following in cricket loving India and that was pretty evident when he landed on Indian soil for the first-time last week.

Sitting alongside her mother, Alisha was seen waving the Pakistan flag cheering every run scored by them. Mohammad Bashir, the Chicago-based Chacha, finally had some competition in the stands.

Pakistan fans have not made the journey across the border yet due to visa issues, therefore, local support is more than welcome.

Much to her disappointment, Babar's stay in the middle lasted only 18 balls as he was caught at mid-wicket. She likes all things Babar, including his trademark cover drive.

I have been a fan of Babar for the past four years. I started a fan page as well on social media but deactivated as I had to focus on my studies, Alisha told PTI.

The love for the game is in the family as my parents are also followers of Pakistan cricket. My mum loves Shahidi Afridi and Dad used to be a big fan of Javed Miandad. Alisha was apprehensive of how the fellow Indians in the stands would react to her holding the Pakistan flag. However, the game was played in front of a sporting crowd with many among the 9000-odd spectators also cheering for the Netherlands squad.

I hope the relations between the countries get better one day, added the class 8 student, who aspires to become an entrepreneur.

No concrete response from ICC, BCCI on timeframe as Pakistan cricket fans await visas
While there is hope of visas for Pakistani journalists being cleared early this week ahead of the October 14 Ahmedabad fixture, there is no guarantee that the fans from across the border would be similarly lucky

Less than a week before the India-Pakistan clash at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, uncertainty clouds the issuance of visas to fans from Pakistan.

Zaka Ashraf, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board management committee, was granted his visa last week but PCB sources indicated it was not certain he would put the document to use. He might want to see how the issuance of the other visas rolls out.

The PCB is waiting for word on visa clearance for its media contingent and Pakistani fans.

Pakistan’s World Cup campaign got under way on Friday with Babar Azam’s team defeating the Netherlands in Hyderabad, but they would surely have appreciated more support from the stands.

The only Pakistani fan from across the border at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium was possibly Mohammad Bashir, better known as “Chicago Chacha” in cricket circles. He holds an American passport, which may have shortened the visa procurement process for him compared with that for anyone of Pakistani origin.

While there is hope of visas for Pakistani journalists being cleared early this week ahead of the October 14 Ahmedabad fixture, there is no guarantee that the fans from across the border would be similarly lucky.

As many as 60 Pakistani journalists are learnt to have applied for visas. Currently, only two Pakistanis are on the commentary team — former internationals Ramiz Raja and Waqar Younis have been able to travel because they are on the International Cricket Council (ICC) commentators’ panel.

The PCB has taken up with the ICC the delay in visas for the Pakistani media and fans.

“PCB has been repeatedly reminding the ICC and the BCCI about their obligations to ensure the provision of visas for Pakistan fans and journalists. There is still no concrete response on the timeframe,” a PCB spokesperson told The Telegraph.

The then Prime Ministers of both countries — Manmohan Singh and Yusuf Raza Gilani — had witnessed the India-Pakistan World Cup semi-final in Mohali in 2011, the last time the tournament was held in India. India won the game and later, the final.

The BCCI maintains that it is for the ministries concerned — external affairs and home — to take a call on the visas while the ICC has been stressing the “obligation” factor. “This is an obligation of our hosts and they are working hard on it with our full support. Every effort is being made to get this sorted,” an ICC spokesperson said on Saturday.

There was no official word from either the External Affairs Ministry or the Home Ministry on the subject of the visas.

Barring pilgrimages — allowed in groups under the India-Pakistan Protocol on Visits to Religious Shrines, 1974 — travel between the two countries has come down to a trickle. More so after Pakistan unilaterally downgraded the bilateral relationship and withdrew its high commissioner from Delhi in August 2019 after India changed the constitutional and political contours of Jammu and Kashmir.

But the process for Pakistanis to secure Indian visas had by then been made more rigorous. This happened after the revelation during the Mumbai 2008 terror attack investigations that David Headley — serving a 35-year sentence in the US after pleading guilty to 12 cases of terrorism — had travelled multiple times to India on his American passport to identify potential targets.

Can't believe I missed this. Pure class from junior Lala. Bobby, Shaheen and Rizwan are absolute gems and play and carry themselves off the field with a lot of class and dignity. Can't speak for all Indians but despite all the acrimony between the cricket boards and the governments and the incessant trolling that goes on between the fans, I must say it's great to host Bobby and gang.

Classy team and even better human beings :amla , Respect!

PCB Management Committee Chairman Mr. Zaka Ashraf has called upon Pakistan Foreign Secretary Syrus Sajjad Qazi and raised serious concerns and alarm over the delay in fans and journalists visas for India to cover the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

The chairman also requested the Foreign Secretary to take up the issue with India's Home Ministry through Pakistan High Commission Office in New Delhi. The PCB has also taken serious notice of security threats being reported in Indian media and requested the government to evaluate players security in India. He emphasised that the well being and safety of the Pakistan squad was of paramount importance.

PCB is extremely disappointed to see that journalists from Pakistan and fans are still facing uncertainty about obtaining an Indian visa to cover Pakistan games in ICC World Cup 2023. In the meantime, PCB has again reminded ICC and BCCI of their respective obligations and terms and conditions stipulated in the Host agreement to guarantee visas for fans and journalists of participating teams.

I was there at the stadium for the SL game guys... Unreal support for Pakistan in our city.

No other place in India will a DJ shout "Jeete ga bhai jeeta ga" and a capacity crowd shouts "Pakistan Jeetega"... Amazing support. They must have felt this was Lahore!

There were chants of Babar... Babar... And incredible cheers for Shaheen when he was fielding at long on. Massive Roar when Abdullah and Rizzy got to their centuries.

Pakistan will miss this kind of environment in other locations.

Yeah, we were discussing the same, chennai is a sportive crowd and Pakistan should at least get fair support even if not as much as they got here. There are a lot of Babar and Shaheen fans... Rizwan got attention only when he played so well.

There was some support for SL as well, I think a section of the crowd had tourists from Srilanka as they were waving Sri Lankan flag and all...There were chants of Babar, Babar which were countered by Kohli Kohli chants from a certain section but Virat wasn't playing so I don't know why they did that. 😆

Overall crowd appeared to be enjoying the game, more than being worried about the result which was great!

What about the fans?

Half-way through Pakistan’s run-chase in the ICC Cricket World Cup match against Sri Lanka on Tuesday, the crowd at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium roared and chanted a famous Pakistani slogan.

Jeetay ga bhaee jeetay ga, Pakistan jeetay ga, they shouted in unison after a prompt from the venue’s DJ.

The near-capacity crowd roared for Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam when he stepped on the field and cheered for Mohammad Rizwan when he guided his team home with a fighting century.

The way the crowd showered us with love, we felt like we were at home, Rizwan cheerfully told reporters after the match on Tuesday.

Pakistan have been based in south India since their arrival in the country nearly two weeks ago, when large crowds gathered at the airport to welcome the team from across the border.

The way people welcomed us at the airport and then chanted for us while we were on the ground – it left us speechless, the Pakistani wicket-keeper batter said when prompted to comment on the reception accorded to his team.

We have developed a bond of love with the people here.

Rizwan came on to bat when his team lost their captain and star batter in the eighth over in pursuit of a target of 345 runs.

He built a 176-run partnership with opening batter Abdullah Shafique and hit the winning runs for his team with 10 balls to spare.

The 31-year-old scored 131 runs on 121 balls in an innings that was hampered by cramps.

Contrary to popular belief, Bharatiya fans showing their class and love for the greens.

To be honest, things only get awkward when Pakistanis claim that Bharatiya Muslims love Pakistan more than Bharat. That’s when the pressure of loyalty and patriotism gets to the Bharatiya Muslims. If you can avoid doing that nonsense we can show more love and we definitely should

Frankly speaking, fans who are indulging in this are standing on a very thin rope. This is a sensitive topic for Bharatiyas.

Support is one thing but indulging in Pakistani songs and slogans is clear cut show of allegiance to padosi mulq which is not good for these people in the longer run. This only gives an excuse to Hindutva forces to further polarise the situation against Bharatiya Muslims.

Simple clapping and cheering is enough.
This is going overboard
