Temba Bavuma - First South African black cricketer to hit a Test century

Bit of a pocket rocket - but surely better than Asad Shafiq, one would imagine?
In South Africa alone....

Bavuma has 938 runs in 22 Tests with 1 century and 5 fifties, at an average of 32.34.

Asad Shafiq has 385 runs in 6 Tests with 1 hundred and 3 fifties, at an average of 32.08.

Bavuma's looked impressive in ODI cricket so far, didn't expect him to be a great limited overs batsman. Tests are a completely different story, terrible record

Looking very impressive on Day 4 - huge danger for Pakistan.

Shades of Asad Shafiq in the manner he failed to marshal the tail today.

Decent fighting innings today, can't blame him too much considering the collapse. I think he trusted Linde and Rabada's batting ability (and rightfully so, they're both good with the bat), but as MenInG said, the tail should have been shepherded a bit better.

SA should move on from quota selections. Avg of 31 after 40+ matches is embarrassing for a middle order batsman.

Only three blacks in the team

Rabada walks in , Nigidi debateable

More than quota I think kolpak is a bigger problem for them

I don't have much knowledge about South African Cricket but this Quota system is ruining their cricket, they should just abandon this stupid quota system & give chances to the players who really deserve it.

One other thing why all the black players in SA are excellent with the bowl & almost no one is good at batting.
Can someone elaborate?

Since he hit his only test hundred Bavuma averages 30.61 in 5 years (36 test matches). How is this man still in the SA test team, surely there must be someone better around?

It was pathetic to see how he batted with the tail ender

He needs to go. Faf needs to go. Bunch of others need to go. Rebuild the team from scratch.

South Africa already has Rabada and Ngidi to fill the '"two mandatory black quota" then why are they bothering with this useless player. Investing on Zubayr Hamza instead of Bavuma will be so much better also this won't disturb the colored quota balance.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma has been reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first T20I against Ireland in Malahide on Monday.

Bavuma was found to have breached Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “use of an audible obscenity during an International Match.”

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Bavuma, for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period.

The incident occurred in the sixth over of South Africa’s innings, when Bavuma used an audible obscenity on being adjudged caught behind.

Bavuma admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Kevin Gallagher of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees and ratified by the ICC Cricket Operations department as per the COVID-19 interim playing regulations. There was no need for a formal hearing.

On-field umpires Alan Neill and Mark Hawthorne, third umpire Rolland Black and fourth official Paul Reynolds levelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

South Africa white-ball captain Temba Bavuma admitted on Thursday that he was disappointed having failed to attract a bid in the auction for his country's new Twenty20 league. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed," he said at a media conference before the South African team's departure for a one-day and T20 internationals tour of India, which will be followed by the T20 World Cup in Australia.

"I feel disappointed and let down," he said. "As much as I'd like to speak more about it, it's probably not the right time. Our focus now is on India and the World Cup."

Bavuma and all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo were the only members of the India-bound squad who were not bought during the SA20 auction.

Both had set a base price of 850,000 rand (USD 50,000) but none of the other current national squad were bought for less than 1.5 million rand.

Two players not in the touring party, fast bowler Sisanda Magala and batsman Donavon Ferreira, also attracted buyers.

"One expected to play a role in the tournament," said Bavuma. "But it's not just me, it's Andile too, who has played a lot of white-ball cricket for South Africa."

Coach Mark Boucher, who will end his tenure after the World Cup, said it was necessary to separate the league and the national team.

"He (Bavuma) is our leader and we back him in this team like you can't believe," said Boucher. "What happens in leagues and auctions -- you can't control that.

"From a Proteas perspective we back him 100 percent. Going into a massive tournament like the World Cup he will be a massive part of our team."

South Africa will play three T20 and three one-day internationals in India, starting with a T20 match in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.

The SA captain will be under immense presuure to perform tomorrow against India as he is being singled out as the weakling in the strong SA batting unit.

Not sure how gets selected for T20 (let alone being the captain).

He is good for Test and should just stick to that format.

How is this guy South Africa's T20I captain?

His last 8 T20I innings:

10
2
2*
3
0
0
8*
8

His T20I career strike-rate is 113.97

Buvama would be much relieved after his quickfore knock today. though it didn't help his team win it would give him the much needed confidence which he can carry to Adelaide when facing NED.

He was refusing to score runs so his teammates could. The moment he scored a bit, his team collectively lost form. Unselfish player.

Brilliant hundred by Bavuma in the 2nd ODI, out for 109 but given SA a good chance to chase down a tough target

JOHANNESBURG: Cricket South Africa (CSA) today announced the appointment of Temba Bavuma as Proteas Test captain as part of a restructure within the leadership group of the national team.

The 32-year-old will replace Dean Elgar at the helm of the red-ball format and will continue to lead the One-Day International (ODI) side. He has, however, relinquished the T20 International (T20I) captaincy with the new leader of that team to be named as part of the white-ball squad to face the West Indies next month.

Bavuma’s first assignment will be to lead a 15-man squad in the two-match Betway Test series against the West Indies from 28 February – 12 March in Centurion and Johannesburg.

How he was the T20I captain is beyond me.

I thought Elgar was doing ok:

In Dean Elgar's first 12 months as captain, South Africa won 7/9 Tests under his leadership, including a memorable 2-1 home series victory against India.

After series defeats away to England and Australia, he's now been replaced as skipper by Temba Bavuma.

Indeed.

He shouldn't play T20 let alone being T20 captain. It is likely he is in the team due to quota system.

Congratulations to Temba on his ascension.

No surprise to see Dean Elgar sacked, his own batting form has been abysmal and he was giving it the big one with his comments before the England tour which, given the result, ended up being quite embarrassing for all concerned.

Brilliant 150 for Bavuma - taken the game out of West Indies reach in the 2nd Test

Great to see him lead from the front. Finally he turned the 50 into 150. The lack of 100s has blighted his stats and confidence

Two stunning knocks from Temba in a space of few days. Special knocks and more so by his standards.
Going great guns in ODI against windies

Good knock and one of the few positives for SA as far as their batting is concerned.

Bavuma, Markram and Van der dussen(in LOIs) are positives for SA.

He has been scoring well recently. About time. He faced criticisms for non-performance.

Brilliant brilliant hundred by Bavuma.. he was in good knick of late 👏👏

Amazing from Bavuma - albeit in a lost cause

South Africa vs Australia, 1st ODI -

Bavuma has a mixed record in limited over cricket - a decent average of 50 in ODIs and an ordinary average of 21 in T20s (strike rate of 118). But really, keeping the average aside, Bavuma is the worst opener in this WC. The guy has zero impact on the game. In yesterday's match, he scored 16 runs of 31 balls and that meant that he scored runs of 4 deliveries out of 31 balls. To score no run of 27 balls out of 31 in the powerplay for an opener is absolute sin. Fine, the dutch were bowling well but there was no Murali or Shane Warne. To face 10 overs of off-spin with 2 fielders outside powerplay and score of just 4 balls out of 31 is shameful. I understand that South Africa has complex socio-political situation and i admire their board to have reservation policy inspite of all the criticism it attracts. But when they have such a solid team this time around, perhaps Bavuma should step up for the larger cause and resign himself from captaincy and let the coach select Reeza Hendricks instead of him. I am sure Bavuma is no fool, he would also know that his teammates would be often talking about how bad a captain they have, why not just resign from captaincy and do the right thing.

Reporter - Did the first 10 overs hurt too much?
Temba Bavuma - Definitely, but from bowling or batting?

:ROFLMAO:
