What's new

Test Cricket Zindabad!

No intent shown by England. 154 odd runs in 25 overs is quiet achievable with 9 wickets remaining. Kohli's India would have gone for the win. Eng is tuk tuking for a boring draw...phew.

If stokes and butler were thier they may have tried to chase it.

No matter what the result of this WTC final will be but I would like to say once again. Test Cricket Zindabad. Take that pyjama league lovers. :inti

Plenty to reflect on while we wait for news on prospects of play - and there's only one place to start, namely Anderson's first-ball dismissal of Kohli. Here's how BUMBLE saw it... (SKY)

"They are two warriors - a wonderful batsman and one of the greatest players we've ever seen, is Virat Kohli, against one of the greatest bowlers we've ever seen.

"It was an absolute gem of a delivery. Just the moment that it happened we saw the elation of Anderson and the fielders and the dismay and disbelief from Kohli as he stood there motionless.

"The crowd was on their feet in a Test match; it was a great moment. It was one of those 'I was there' moments because, believe me, they are two of the greatest."

Yest Cricket is where players become legends. No one is gonna remember a Sibley or Lawrence for hitting a few sixers in the T20 stuff. They ain't test class.

Tantalizing end to the 1st Test - are you not entertained?

two nail biters in the last few days!

Thoroughly enjoyable.

These two tests still won't stop those who keep decrying the death of test cricket, but then again test cricket has been stuck in a self-indulgent existential crisis since the 1880s.

The format will endure, there's no other sport quite like it.

How can you not be in love with test cricket? All the dull, dreary periods of play are worth it for moments of drama like today and yesterday.

Test cricket needs bottoms on seats for atmosphere and good wickets and the players will take care of the rest.

Test cricket is like a fine champagne, while T20 is like cheap vino sfuso.

There's a market for both but no points for guessing what a true connoisseur would choose.

Yet another punch line to be added to every Pakistani player during an interview now. ''that's the beauty of test cricket''. After a hopeless loss Babar said this. Unbelievable level of weak backside.

I love test cricket..absolutely pumped in my chair ...watched Pakistan game till late night 3:20 am and than this cracker...test cricket zindabad

A few amazing days of test match cricket..

I decided to leave work early today snd was glued to the tv from 2pm until 6:30pm.
This after watching 6 hours of cricket up to 10pm yesterday...

Can Anyone recommend a decent lawyer?

Indeed test cricket zindabad. In no other games fighting for a draw would be this entertaining.

Amen

The ongoing Ind-Eng tests is one of the best series we have witnessed in this country for a long time. Perhaps the most exciting series since Ashes 2005. I know Headingley 2019 happened but that was just 1 match. But the ebbs and flows of this series reminds me of Ashes 2005.

Agree? Robert Junaids

Agree and this is when Ben Stokes isn't even playing in this series. In addition to that I think this series is better than all the pyjama league tournaments that have happened so far on this planet. Test cricket zindabaad. :kp :inti

That goes without saying. Test cricket is and will always be the best format in cricket. There is a reason big 3 teams plays so many test matches. White ball cricket (leagues/international) is no where close to it.

Absolutely enthralling this version of the game - England and India not giving an inch. Fight! Fight! Fight!

Test cricket is absolutely the most special of games.

Long may it reign!

Test Cricket....

Zindabad!

This was an excellent Test match, and as expected, it's been a wonderful series so far. Makes up for the rubbish being served up by England in Australia.

In isolation, pardon the pun, this is a good test match but its entirely meaningless. Yet SA, India, Bang, NZ and the recently conclude pak in bang series have produced some exceptional games of test cricket.

As I posted ages ago, England v Australia just don't produce competitive series any more.

Already in 2022 we have seen three great Test matches and it’s only January 9th. Lol

Truly the greatest form of the greatest game on the planet !

NEW DELHI: Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir enjoyed to the hilt as England's tailenders resisted Australia's bowlers in fading light on Sunday to clinch a draw on a dramatic final day of the fourth Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

In his column for the Times of India, Gambhir wrote, "There were some dramatic scenes at the end of the Sydney Test. Australia hunting for England; England clinging on to dear life. In the closing moments, Australian captain Pat Cummins brought in Steve Smith to bowl his leg-spinners to England batsmen. The drama, the adrenaline, the tension all rolling well with each other to produce some good television time for all of us sitting on the couch and watching."

But Gambhir rued the fact that the standard of Test cricket is falling around the world.

"The marketing guys would like us to believe that Test cricket is alive and kicking. But sadly, despite those powerful scenes, Test cricket the world over is not producing the requisite standards. England are struggling, so are Sri Lanka, Pakistan and West Indies. I am sorry, but beyond a point you cannot live on history or legacy.

West Indies WAS a great side, England WAS a top side in patches, Pakistan and Sri Lanka USED to produce fantastic cricket. Sport is played in present, history and nostalgia can only tickle the romance of the whole scene. At present only India, Australia and New Zealand are producing some decent standards. That is why it was surprising to see India go down to an ordinary South African team. I am not too excited about the win in Centurion. If anything, India should have dominated this series. Therefore the loss in Johannesburg should really hurt the group," Gambhir added.

Gambhir hoped that India won't drop Hanuma Vihari for the third Test against South Africa as Virat Kohli returns to lead the side.
"As they go into the final Test, India need to do all the running around. South Africa will be happy with a draw in the third Test and would have won a lottery if they beat India. Virat Kohli is all set to return to the team. Once again, I will not win many fans for saying this but I'd leave out Ajinkya Rahane to accommodate the India captain.

I am more in favour of Hanuma Vihari to continue in the middle-order. Even in the past, Vihari has been conveniently left out to accommodate senior batsmen. I am not sure this is how a young talent should be looked after. I have nothing against Rahane, he is a nice guy with a good heart and showed some form too in the last game. But if I had anything to do with Indian cricket, I'd be worried for Vihari," Gambhir opined.

Gambhir hoped that in the place of the injured Mohammad Siraj, India opt for Umesh Yadav and not for Ishant Sharma.

"The other forced change will be if Mohammad Siraj is still not fit. There will be a temptation to play the experienced Ishant Sharma in his place. He is the guy who has played over 100 Tests for the country and has captured in excess of 300 Test wickets. With due respect to Ishant though, I'd be more inclined to play Umesh Yadav. For me, he is a like for like replacement for Siraj. Both have similar attacking style of bowling and are skiddy customers. Let's see if the Indian think tank agrees with me," Gambhir wrote.

Cheteshwar Pujara shared a 111-run third wicket partnership with Rahane to ensure that South Africa were set a challenging target in the second Test at the Wanderers. Pujara and Rahane added 66 in the first hour on Day 3 before conditions became more difficult. India's second innings total of 266 owed much to Pujara and Rahane, who shared the biggest partnership of the 2nd Test.

"A lot is being said and written about how Cheteshwar Pujara batted in the second innings at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. It was indeed a revelation. Everyone wants to know why can't he bat like this more often? I am also grappling for an answer to that one. Is he feeling more secure with the new coach Rahul Dravid around? Does he perform at his best when he has his back to the wall? I am not sure what is it. But I hope Pujara doesn't alter his plans," Gambhir signed off.

Vodafone men’s Ashes captivates the country with 2.76 million watching the SCG Test finale
The Vodafone men’s Ashes Series has captivated the country, with an extraordinary 44 of the 47 sessions played so far averaging more than 1 million viewers watching on Foxtel platforms and the Seven network.

The dramatic final session at the SCG had a peak average audience of 2.76 million as England salvaged a nail-biting draw. The entire session averaged 2.14 million viewers, while the entire Sydney Test match held an average audience of 1.43 million across more than 29 hours of live cricket.

The total average audience across linear TV and streaming was 1.05 million for the Gabba Test, a massive 1.51 million for the Adelaide day-night Test and 1.66 million for the Boxing Day Test where the Australian men's team retained the Ashes. The total reach across the series tallies more than 10.9 million people on Free To Air TV and 2.1m on Subscription TV.

Viewers have been sticking around, too, with 17 of 18 the match days played recording an average audience of more than 1 million viewers across the entire day, making this Ashes the most watched Test series since the 2013-14 Ashes Series in Australia.

Richard Orstroff, Cricket Australia’s Head of Broadcast & Production, said it had been an incredible Ashes series.

“It has been fantastic to see so many fans tuning into the world class coverage of Test cricket produced by our partners at the Foxtel Group and the Seven Network,” he said.

“To have well over a million people watching Test cricket is a great result, but to have that happen in almost all of the 47 sessions of cricket is fantastic, and testament to the performances of the players and the special status cricket holds as the national game.

“To attract such a vast audience both during and outside of prime time viewing hours is extraordinary. We are also extremely grateful to our fantastic radio broadcast partners in the ABC, SEN and Triple M who have done a brilliant job taking cricket to fans across the country this summer.

“We’ve seen some terrific cricket with compelling stories across the whole series and we look forward to the next chapter being written in Hobart with the first Ashes and first day-night Test starting on Friday.

Wonder what the BT viewing figures in the UK were like. A lot of people have subscriptions now for the Premier League and Champions League matches.

This is why Test cricket needs to go. A Test match on a dead pitch like this is the easiest format to play for a batsman and produces the lowest quality of cricket.

An ODI or a T20 can never be this pathetic regardless of how bad the pitch/conditions are.

This is nonsense cricket.

And people call batting in Test Cricket the hardest, it's challenging sometimes but not all the time.

Runs being offered as charity in the ongoing Test.

Test match looks beautiful only in bowler freindly pitches ..or else it's like waiting for a painted wall to dry..

Not a good match for this thread to be bumped up.

Test cricket must only be played on uncurated pitches, like they used to do in earlier times. Leave the pitch open to the elements and take what nature throws at you!

Back in the old days, the batsmen didn't even have the luxury of helmets.

Take it easy guys. You will also have the odd boring test match.

Pakistan didnt help themselves by batting too slow, playing 4 bowlers and dropping Khawaja early on.

An extremely poor pitch, but this is just one match and hardly signals the end of Test cricket.

There have been plenty of borefests in limited overs cricket — in ODIs in particular, and sometimes in T20s as well.

Not every match is going to be a classic.

100% agreed, for a crowd to turn up and see such a shambolic dead pitch is a let down.

It's one of the rare marquee home series to go ahead in a LONG time.

I half expected a few "CEO" 5 day pitches just do get the $$ from the opportunity- that $$ can be put to good use for cricket I am sure. PCB needed some income.

It turned out a little worse than expected I am sure. But I think future series will see it corrected.

Whether we see it ALL this series... I dread it, but can see the short term need. I hope I am wrong and the pitches give bowlers a chance at some stage.

Nothing wrong with high scoring- I've seen some 450 plays 500 1st innings at Adelaide turn to nailbiters because the old Adelaide daytime pitch (short grass in a desert state) broke up. But the pitch needs to change in such circumstances.

Batsmen averaging 250 and 200 while bowlers also averaging 100 and 150 in the same match is not good for cricket.

It's just a one off give it a break Test cricket is the ultimate format a players calibre is gauged by Test cricket
Take your pick Flintoff or Afridi Mcgrath or Malinga

Hardly the end of Test cricket. Far from it. But these bore fests only happen in Tests and ODI's. Almost never in T20.

One of the reasons people have lost interest in ODI's. Just have to make sure this does not happen to tests. Though it already has outside of the Big3. Perhaps there is still hope for tests in Pak. given the crowd that showed up to the match.

worry is that if pakistan produce a few more pitches like this then crowds will start to not turn up.

The curators in Karachi and Lahore will have to work overtime now to make sure they don’t accidentally provide another road

I doubt the curators at Pindi were expecting it to be this flat

I can imagine that young fans who went to Pindi stadium will have been delighted to see the Aussie and Pakistani players out there, but I'm pretty sure they will not have been impressed at all with the surface. If anyone wanted to be put off from watching Test cricket they just need to watch this recently concluded match.

It is impossible for any white ball match to be this boring and inconsequential. No one can come up with any examples.

Test cricket is a flawed, outdated format that needs to be laid to rest.

It is a format for limited batsmen that do not have shots in their arsenal and cannot cope with run rate pressure.

I’m planning to boycott Test cricket after this match. It only offers high quality cricket if the pitch is bowling-friendly.

There is nothing, I repeat NOTHING, quite like Test cricket.

Last day of the Test series, all to play for and a result likely!

So you think ODIs are all thrillers?. Like when teams chase down 350 with overs to spare

Poor advertisement for return of test cricket.

Reeks of incompetent batsmen. The pitch is fine.

Would you rather have 8 hours of slow slog or 17 wickets?

Both are poor choices. Option one is what is driving fans to T20. Option two may appeal to some test fans. I personally, would like to see a 100 off 140 balls type batting.

This upcoming Lord’s Test match Saturday could be a classic.

Apart from the recent borefest in Pakistan most test matches seem to come to a conclusion within 4 days because of the lack of ability/capability of modern batsmen.

This England V New Zealand match had all the twists and turns to keep the viewing audience engaged and finished up quite nicely with most of Sunday to spare.

It's time to strike while the Iron is hot and go for 4 day matches. Preferably with more day/night tests too.

The format is still alive ( just) but decisions need to be made now, rather than when its breathing its last breaths and things are too late.
