The 1st Test between England and India is drawn after rain washes out Day 5 at Trent Bridge

Day 5: Tea Break - India need 157 runs

ENG 183 & 303
IND 278 & 52/1 (14) CRR: 3.71

It has stopped raining at Trent Bridge

India is being saved by rain here it seems.

Or else i dont see them chasing 200. Their highest chase here has been what, 170ish?

Lol how delusion are pakistan fans ? We only need 157 now with 9 wickets left .which country chase 328 at Gabba in entire history of cricket?? Its india so :shhh

The BCCI should ban England from cricket until they have stadiums with roofs.

Called off

Major let off for India here. No way would they have reached 209 without losing all 10 wickets in these conditions

We are robbed of a win here . England weather save them yet again

India would be disappointed here. They were the favorite side in this contest and lost an opportunity to win the first test due to factors out of their control.

Was meant to be a pretty good day of test cricket, shame it has been called off.

India just needs 30 overs to win. Will they get one? India has some good strikers in the side.

I think India would have been in with a shout here and should be disappointed they didnt get a chance to attempt a win.

India to blame. After bowling England out for 183, they should have batted them out of the game

Kohli's bad luck. An easy win robbed by rain. We just needed 35 overs to score these runs off but alas.

Anyway, off to Lords now.

Lol, as if it's as easy as it sounds.

England has some of the champion bowlers (2 of them have taken more than 1100 test wickets between themselves) in their ranks and more importantly are playing at home.

again which country has never chased above 180 in england,

Its India so shush yourself

I recon Broad would have taken a 7fer in the 4th innings. He was pumped last night!

i feel as if England were robbed a win here, no worries though

India robbed of win here. We were 52/1 and the chase was just a formality.

India robbed of win here. We were 52/1 and the chase was just a formality.

Lol, this wasn’t an ODI.

How many times have teams been in a good position like 50-1 going on to capitulate at 170 all out whilst chasing anything above 200?

again which country has never chased above 180 in england,

Again before india no one chase 328 but chase it , we breached gabba already. Its time for England but robbed of a win by England rain .

Feel sorry for Stuart Broad

He was feeling an easy 5fer on his home ground!

India were favs.....but the chase was no formality, Eng were very much in this game.

Remember the 2018 series

Yeah but in Edgabaston while chasing 200, we were 3 down at 38. Here, we were at 52/1.

England really need to sort out their batting order for the next test

Can’t believe they are carrying 4-5 passengers with the bat!

Easy win? Really? With the overhead conditions toady and the uneven bounce, there weren't going to be any easy win

Weren't you singing a different tune yesterday? India were favorites but it was not going to be as easy as you are making it sound now. As I said India had 55% chance of winning. 2 quick wickets would have changed that equation. :inti

England must be kicking themselves

Anderson, Broad and Robinson have missed out on some wickets today

Overhead condition was there throughout the test match except for a brief period when Eng was batting yesterday. India already mopped off 54 runs from 209....so the remaining 150 odd runs would have been pretty simple. Ofcourse in cricket anything can happen but Eng would be thanking rain here for saving an imminent defeat.

India were clear favorites.

England will be the happier side with this result.

Khair.. Hope weather is better at Lords.

Its was not going to easy but after 52/1 most of team looking to chase this total .we have pant, jadeja at lower order where they can Play attacking game so india were clearly favourite but anything can happened i agree

Now after today escape England is a team who look more happy and they have upper hand at lord's .

Trent bridge was the venue we got a win last series and thought we might get one at Nottingham this series as well. Was not to be.

England will be rejuvenated and play better in the remaining matches.

The reason we faltered in those 3 run chases back in 2018 was we were always getting reduced to 30/3 or 50/4 at the top. And of course the conditions were far far more bowling friendly at least at Cape Town and Edgebaston.

Here we were 53/1 and were going rather comfortably. Except Robinson, no other English bowler looked that threatening yesterday even though Broad took the wicket.

Golden opportunity missed I think. Maybe ICC / ECB should start thinking of a reserve day for each and every test match from now on as each game counts for the WTC standings.

Thats alright....but a couple of early wickets today and Ind could've been in trouble, as we saw in WTC final recently

Those 52 runs were scored yesterday...it was a new day today and batsman would've to restart.

A couple of early wickets in the first 30 mins could've opened the floodgates.

Recently in WTC final, in 2nd inngs India were 64/2 overnight.....next morning they lost their overnight batsmen early and got bundled out for 170 in pretty good batting conditions with bright sunshine

If only. My money would have been Ind but Ind are also prone to collapses like they did in the 1st innings

Even then some of these fans were saying that rain was saving New Zealand. :inti

Exactly

Indian fans seem to be at liberty with reality

again it is england that were robbed a win.

Stats show taht India has never chased anything down that was above 180 there in England. Dont know how you can claim otherwise here

Could've would've work both ways you know right? One 50 run partnership somewhere in the top 6 and India would've cake walked through to a win. See?

Completely different scenarios. In the final, we were clearly looking to force a win rather than settling for a draw. Rahane, Pant and Ashwin all lost their wickets trying to score quickly and put NZ in to bat ASAP as there was not much time left.

Here they were under no such constraints. 157 runs in 98 overs... they had all the time in the world to go about their business. And finally..the most important factor - that NZ attack is a level above this current England attack. So there it is..

Nothing wrong to claim since Trent Bridge has been a good venue for India.
2- Wins
4 - draws and
1- Loss

This Indian batting line perhaps wouldn't be able to chase 209 in the fourth innings.

Rain saved them today.

I think Rain helped us (Indians). But I’d have taken a loss by fighting rather than a fight less draw. It’s so annoying, these rains.

Its not an unfair demand from a side which talks about being the number one side in the world and is reputed to be the number one side in the world

India lucked out here. Cloudy conditions at Trent bridge with Jimmy around, and the Indian ineptness in seaming and swinging conditions - they would have struggled with 150 let alone 200

"Stats" also showed that India had never chased anything above 250 in Australia. "Stats" also showed that Australia had never lost a test match at Gabba in 3 decades.

Please tell me how that turned out on day 5 in Brisbane.

It is funny how all of a sudden when Indian games are affected England should be banned from hosting matches. Rain in England is no surprise, it’s always been like this.

Also careful what you wish for - 2018, best summer in history and india got absolutely thrashed.

The match was evenly poised heading into the final day of the Test in Trent Bridge but the match was called off after persistent rains kept delaying the start of play.

India would have started the day at an overnight score of 52/1 with Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara at the crease and still needing 157 runs to win, but the match was called off without a ball being bowled on the fifth day.

Both teams would have pushed for a win had the weather permitted, but will had to settle for four points each in the ICC World Test Championship standings.

Virat Kohli's side started the first match of WTC 2021-2023 cycle strongly on day one, with the fast bowlers justifying the skipper's decision to drop a spinner for a pacer.

Jasprit Bumrah found his rhythm in the very first over, getting rid of Rory Burns, which set the tone for the rest of the innings. The fast-bowling quartet picked up all 10 wickets in the innings, with Bumrah leading the way with 4/46.

Joe Root was the only half-centurion for England in the first innings. While Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow made good starts, they failed to make substantial contributions as the hosts were bundled out of 183.

Playing his first Test in almost two years, KL Rahul was calmness personified as he had an answer for everything that the England attack threw at him. Patient knocks from Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja and handy contributions from the tail gave India a valuable lead of 95 runs on day three.

Stuart Broad and Sam Curran failed to trouble the Indian batters, but James Anderson and Ollie Robinson had a memorable day with the ball. Robinson recorded his maiden five-for in Tests while Anderson became the third-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, equalling Anil Kumble's record with the wicket of Kohli for a duck and then surpassing it with the scalp of Rahul.

Root was once again England's saviour in the second innings with a counter-attacking century that put the pressure back on India. The skipper strung together several vital partnerships with the rest of the batters to set India a target of 209 in the fourth innings.

If the four-for in the first innings wasn't enough proof that Bumrah had found his groove, the paceman was on fire in the second innings as well, putting his name on the Trent Bridge's honours board with a five-for.

India finished day four on 52/1, and never took the field on day five after rain forced the first Test into a draw.

With a fifty and a hundred to his name, England skipper Joe Root was awarded the Player of the Match.

The action now moves to Lord's in London where the two teams will clash in the second Test of the five-match series, starting on Thursday, 12 August.

Yeah, we only talk about the no.1 ranking, we don't deserve it. Who deserves it then?

NZ are obviously No1 right now. No doubt about it. Daylight firmly 2nd, maybe India or Aus after that

India had never lost a game in England with a lead of 75 runs or more. It was going according to script, until the rain spoiled it all. So 60% chance of Indian win went in vain
Nevermind onto the next game, india looking strong

Considering how poor England’s batting is, I came to note that Ian Bell is 39 whilst Jonathon Trott is 40, KP is 41

It seems like these guys retired from international cricket a decade ago, yet they are all young enough to represent Pakistan for another 2-3 years

It might be worthwhile for England to forgive Morgan for his failures against Ajmal and give him a chance in the middle over Lawrence or Crawley. England are also hoping for the best from Bairstow and Butler, why not hope some more with Morgan?

That is the biggest problem with Cricket. A great day of Test Cricket promising all sorts of exciting ruined by bad weather. India being the favourites I feel England will be the happier of the two sides. We'll do it again in a few days time.

The first Test between India and England was shaping up to deliver an exciting and enthralling final-day finish, but the Nottingham weather had other plans. With India needing to knock off another 157 runs to win the Test, and England's bowlers targeting nine wickets, the game was evenly-poised heading into Day 5. But in the end, it was the rain that had the last laugh and denied the fans of a finish they deserved.

After the match, India captain Virat Kohli rued the bad timing of rain, while admitting that his team had a good chance to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Persistent rain washed out the entire day's play on Sunday without a single ball being bowled. Kohli added that he was happy to see India start well in the series while highlighting the importance of getting a first-innings lead in the Test.

"It's a shame. We were expecting rain on day three and four, but it chooses to arrive on day five. We thought we were in a good position to have a crack at the target. This is exactly what we wanted to do: we wanted to start strong," Kohli told the broadcasters.

"Heading to day five, we had our chances right in front of us. One good partnership and then you know what happens when there's only 150 on the board to defend. We certainly felt like we are on top of the game and it's a shame we couldn't complete day five. We bowled well enough and batted well enough to stay in the contest and then getting that lead was crucial which kept us on top throughout the game."

Kohli was particularly impressed with the way India's openers responded to the 209-run target set by England. After bowling England out for 303 in the second innings, India had to face 14 overs of play, in which they batted well to reach 52/1 at stumps on Day 4 with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul adding 34 for the first wickets and later Cheteshwar Pujara remaining unbeaten on 12 off 13 balls.

"To get to 50 overnight is a big positive for us. It wasn't about survival; it was about getting the boundaries where the opportunity presented itself. Our intent is what kept us ahead in the game. Even today the start would have been the same," Kohli said.

England captain Joe Root believes the only winner was the weather after the final day of the first Test against India was rained off at Trent Bridge.

What had promised to be an intriguing end with India chasing 209 for victory after Root's century had kept England in the match ended up as a washout.

And although India arguably had a slight advantage needing 157 runs with nine wickets in hand to go 1-0 up in the five-test series, Root believes anything could still have happened.

Report: Rain denies England and India shot at first Test win
First Test scorecard: England vs India
Day five at Trent Bridge - as it happened
"The weather's robbed us of what could have been a very entertaining final day," he said.

"I would have been lying if I didn't say India were in the driving seat going into today but on a wicket like that, you get a couple in a cluster and the game can turn on its head.

"At one stage we had the potential chance of 40 overs which would have made for a tasty end to what has been a great test match to play in.

"We believed we could have pushed for the win today, it's just a shame the weather won today."

Of the 486 runs England made in the match, Root managed 173 of them with his display holding up a brittle top order with the side also spilling a number of catches.

Although the England captain knows his side must improve, he feels there were signs of improvement as the test progressed.

"I think we grew into the game, after the first innings we were well below par but that being said, I still think we bowled really well," Root added.

"There were a few glimpses of what we're capable of with the batting in the second innings and we played with better intent.

"We'd obviously want to score more runs at the top of the order, we want to take all the chances that we create and make our life a little bit easier.

"We know there's things to work on and there's areas we need to be better at and we need to make big first innings runs.

"But we're capable of doing it and it's the big partnerships that we didn't quite get in the second innings but I think you saw a better tempo and hopefully we can carry that forward into the second Test."

Michael Atherton gives his reaction to that news that Jofra Archer news has been ruled out for the rest of the year after a recurrence of a stress fracture of his right elbow.

Injuries and Covid restrictions have not helped England find a stable line-up with Jofra Archer being ruled out for the rest of the year a particular blow.

On Archer's absence, Root said: "I'm absolutely gutted for Jofra (Archer) - he's come in for some harsh criticism which I think is unwarranted.

"He's clearly been battling with a severe injury and I really hope he can get himself fit and healthy again soon.

"At times it looked like he was bowling through a lot of pain and hopefully he can come through some hard rehab and show everyone what a fantastic player he is because he is going to be a serious performer for England across the board, there's no doubt about it.
