The 2016 U.S. Elections Thread

Besides, I have lived here too long I guess. My general knowledge, history and geography skills are down in the gutter now as an average american's:)

A gallup poll that surveyed oversampled minority? and this? I dont see much a difference.

Gallup specifically say they surveyed oversampled minority? I'm asking becos I didn't look up the link.

I'd take anything from breibart with a big truck load of salt.

Man, Jeb Bush is done. So much for the Clinton vs Bush tieup the mainstream media were making to sound inevitable.

then you need to go back and read it.

It is pointless to engage in a discussion with someone who is not open to change. I will take the easy road here and say I defer to Stewie on all matters immigration.

Here's another poll that shows that views on immigration break along the party lines: http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tan...ts-americans-largely-split-along-party-lines/

Haha. That is friggin hilarious. Who do you think your talking to here? Are you confusing me with Obama, Trump or Cruz? Since when does my opinion matter?

If it were up to me I would hand out green cards in a hot air balloon but that doesn't mean anything now, does it? I am just sharing my personal view on the opinion of the Americans. You can cite your internet references and I can cite my personal interactions with Americans over the last two decades, and they have gone increasingly anti immigration since 9/11.

Nobody is holding a gun to your head to believe me. Same as nobody is holding one to mine. End of story....

Stewie, Stewie, Stewie... I don't understand why you're getting your panties in a bunch. We're in complete agreement. Consider me a fan. I enjoy your posts.

I think Iowa cooked the goose of both Trump and Cruz.

Trump's "winner" image cracked at the first hurdle.

But Cruz's team, by selling the lie that Carson was about to withdraw, stole votes that they had no right to and The Donald is incensed. And he will devote his energy and finances into ensuring that Cruz is not seen as The Good Evangelical Christian Conservative but the Untrustworthy Canadian Cheat With No Morals.

It's going to be Rubio who wins the nomination. Personally, I liked Rand Paul.

Christie devoured Rubio at the debate last night, Rubio came across as a whiny little boy. Cruz prevaricated over torture, Carson was asleep as usual, Jeb "please clap" Bush continues to flop whilst Trump was Trump.

Amazing how nobody stands up to Trump given he's such a target-rich subject, why do they just bow their heads and not attack him for his vagueness on so many policy issues ?! These tough talking conservatives are pansies in reality.

This is part of the absurdity, isn't it?

Cruz and Rubio are a pair of junior nobodies, but have style and élan. Trump is completely out of his depth. Christie and Kasich are both good candidates, while Carson looks like an imposter for a former neurosurgeon.

Whereas Jeb Bush is boring and competent like his dad, and would be a great President, unlike his brother, but now that the primaries have become American Idol he can't get the nomination!

Bush was not incompetent its just the media making him look so. He became president to do what he wanted it wasn't good for the US or the world in general but he did what he wanted to do as president.
The guy was a Yale and Harvard graduate acted the fool and like your best friend and neighbor to get elected.

They are not pansies , they are just more intelligent than you.Anyone who attacks Trump is deemed by the public as attacking his highly popular policy proposals and immediately sufffers in the polls. We saw that with Lindsey , Jindal , Rand and Jeb.
Smart ones like Cruz , Rubio and Christie have avoided this altogether and are still surviving.

Rubio pulled a Nixon, he was sweating profusely and wouldn't veer off his pre-rehearsed talking points and anti-Obama soundbites. He'd be the biggest threat to Clinton, finished a strong third in Iowa but totally failed to build any momentum with that debate performance.

Frankly, if you've seen one Republican debate you've seen them all. Its the same old routine - less taxes, less regulation, Obama's terrible, wars are good, we need more bombing, the Muslims are scary, I'll be tougher on ISIS than you, if you ask us tough questions then you're part of the liberal media, we love guns - rinse and repeat.

Why don't they ask about campaign finance reform and how the donors are buying politicans in the form of legalised bribes ? Or rising inequality in America between the top 1% and everybody else ? It drives me crazy how soft the media are on Republicans compares to the Democratic debates and how they don't question them on SPECIFICS.

All their tax plans would be a disaster. Ben Carson wants to base it on the Biblical system of tithes ! Cruz's flat tax would bankrupt the economy and Rubio would cut taxes even further than Dubya. Trump is so vague, telling us how fantastic he'll be yet never provides any specifics, says insane things like he'll bring back torture "worse than waterboarding" - and the moderators let him off the hook !

Believe me, it wouldn't take much to outdebate your heroes like Ted "I'll carpet bomb the Middle East and don't care if I kill civilians" Cruz, Ben "evolution is the work of the devil" Carson, Donald "I'll figure out the difference between Hamas and Hezbollah later" Trump or Jeb "please clap" Bush.

Trump is not "highly popular" amongst the public, he ranks worst out of all the GOP field with - 30 favourability amongst independents. And Iowa shows Trump is beatable, so there's no need for Cruz to be sucking up to him. Infact if I was a Republican, I'd expose Trump's flip flopping instead of trying to bask in his reflected glory - you CANNOT out-Trump Donald Trump so why play that game as the GOP base will go for the real thing.

Fact is only a few years ago, Trump held many liberal positions. He supported universal health care, said on Meet The Press he was pro choice, said there were "too many guns" and backed federal restrictions and even supported Obama's stimulus ! Not to mention his effusive praise in the past for Nancy Pelosi, and yes even Hillary Clinton who he said was a great friend and very competent ! Trump can be so easily exposed but these Republicans are pussycats.

It is a strange ploy that the Republican establishment is playing and I can think of only two plausible explanations. One, they still think that Trump's support will never materialize into actual votes and he will self-destruct eventually. Second, attacking Trump openly and fiercely will make it look like the establishment is after him and as he has threatened before, this could push him into running as an independent which would be the end to any Republican candidates chances of victory.

Right now the battle is about who will emerge as the alternative to Trump as the majority of the republican voters in the primaries are undecided and are waiting for someone to emerge as the lead candidate. His negative ratings are so high that if it was a one on one race between Trump and another candidate, whether its Bush, Rubio or Christe....Trump would not even be competitive. The higher the number of candidates, the better for Trump.

Ted Cruz will be the only one to loose from a Trump gain at this stage as both are going for the same voter base but surprisingly, even he had a pretty lame debate. Maybe its him trying to look "Presidential" by not going down to the level of Trump because one thing is for sure, if you attack Trump he will counter-attack. It will be dirty, below the belt and outright mean stuff so the pros and cons of doing that had to be weighed in closely. But I think at the right stage, preferably when its between him and another one or two candidates, he will get attacked.

As for Rubio, the Republican establishment must be having nightmares. Finally, there seem to be someone emerging out this crowded field who would make a good general election candidate and who despite being very conservative is better than Cruz but the last debate have put a question mark over his head yet again. Still I think we, by which I mean political junkies, stay in the "fog of war" mindset. For an average Joe sitting at home, this might not be such a big gaffe. He also recovered later in the debate with some solid answers on abortion, in short...he served the the red meat that the base was asking for.

Right now, it looks like a four way race with Trump, Cruz, Rubio and a Governor, either Kasich, Bush or Christie. It will be interesting to see as all 3 had a good debate, especially Christie but he is polling the lowest around 3-5% so hard to say if he will get a post-debate bump big enough to put him in the final four. Kasich seems the most likely candidate to me but its still anyone's game.

I have a feeling trump if he gets the ticket will pick Christie as his running mate

confused_amoeba - an excellent post. Though I disagree Trump would easily lose in a one-on-one race. What people have to understand is this is simply not your normal election cycle. If it was any other year - I'd tell you guys Trump and Sanders have no chance, they're outsiders, they're mavericks and the establishment candidate will win as per conventional Washington wisdom.

But people are SICK of establishment politicians. Look at Jeb Bush's floundering campaign. Look at Greece, Spain, Portugal, Britain, France and Italy - the mainstream parties are losing more and more support. I read a poll recently stating 54% of Americans want a political revolution ! What Trump and Sanders have done is exploit peoples' anger at the system (Sanders in a more positive way IMO as all Trump's done is stir up hatred and fear against minorities) and have promised not to play the Washington game better (like Hillary would or Jeb) but shake the Washington game up entirely.

I think its Trump's nomination to lose and whilst I hear your analysis of why the other GOP candidates are reluctant to attack Trump - I don't see how playing patty cake with the guy is gonna help when he has a 15 point lead in New Hampshire. The time to go on the offence is now.

So, is it going to be Hillary or Sanders for the Demos?

In any other election cycle - Hillary. But remember this - Hillary had a 61 point lead in Iowa in May. If you told her she would tie with the most liberal member of the Senate come February - she would faint at the thought. Not to mention Sanders has a big lead in New Hampshire.

Hillary's also had a 31 point national lead over Sanders wiped out. The latest Quinnipac poll has them neck and neck ! Its not your normal election folks where the status quo candidate eventually prevails - its foolish to say Hillary's a slam dunk given the numbers.

Agree. Not your usual election cycle. Hence, Michael Bloomberg, a fiscally conservative but socially liberal independent, seriously contemplating a run if he sees Sanders and Trump emerging as the winners from their respective side.

I still am a bit skeptical about either of them making it to the final. The poll numbers showing Hillary and Sanders neck to neck nationally at this time are misleading just like they were, showing a big lead for Hillary few months back. It will be a closer race than I expected but I think Hillary, especially in the big multi-racial states, who by the way have more delegates, will emerge as the winner plus Dems have the Super-delegates safety clause in their system precisely to stop a candidate like Sanders.

As for Trump, I do see a possible but not a very likely scenario where he emerges on the top and that is if none of the establishment candidates are able to offer an effective challenge to him and if its between him and Cruz. In that case the establishment will go for Trump as he appears to be more malleable and likely to work with the establishment rather than oppose them. His positions on health care, imminent domain etc. are more centrist than Republican. No wonder he is being loathed and attacked viciously by the talk radio pundits who despise the republican establishment and have anointed Cruz as carrying the mantle of pure conservatism. The old adage, the enemy of my enemy is my friend, may come into play.

I have a feeling trump if he gets the ticket will pick Christie as his running mate

Very astute. Apparently they are "friends" with Trump having business interests in New Jersey in Atlantic City and both of them having the same "big govt. strong center and hyper-nationalist on defense" mindset. Both are bullies, from the east-coast and share the same narcissistic personality traits. Actually, Christie would likely not have been reduced to single digits in the polls if not for Trump being in the race. I still think Christie not attacking Trump at this stage is less to do with his VP dreams than the strategic ploy to become the "establishment" candidate by instead going after Rubio but there might be more to it than just that.

A new Emerson College NH state wide poll conducted from Thursday till late Sunday (post Rep debate) came out and just shows how volatile the field is with day to day fluctuations and the debate making huge impacts.

Trump who started at 37% on Thursday, skidded to 22% on Saturday and post debate went up to 33% on Sunday. Bush trended upward to from 12% to 19% and is now in second position which was earlier held by Rubio who fell from 17% on Friday to single digits by Sunday, likely from the debate fiasco.

All in all, the last Rep debate was HUUUGE from Trump. Not only did he stopped the bleeding but actually gained back some respectability back but more importantly, it prevented Rubio from emerging as the lead challenger to him from the establishment side and hence, will keep other establishment contenders (Bush, Kasich and Christie) from dropping out soon, which means the establishment vote will stay diluted and ultimately will help Trump more than anyone.

trump has absolutely destroyed the rest of the gop candidates in new hampshire.

Strong show from Kasich.

Very polar results from NH, the most left-wing and right-wing winning in their respective parties.

dude Sanders vote count was double that of Trump. NH is not exactly a bell weather state.

Not double but higer. Trump is around 90,000 with Sanders around 140,000. But Trump has more than double the number of votes than the person in second.

In any case, huge turnout and a lot of excitment on the anti-party/anti-establishment side. Thing that surpised me the most was Cruz coming in third despite having low expectations and spending less than most candidates. Compared to Bush who spent over 20 million in NH, Cruz only spent around 300K. Trump performed slightly better than his poll numbers which is a very scary scaenario for the GOP. On the other hand, Rubio's graph dropped like a hot potato after the debate. Just goes to show how important these debates have become since there is so much indecision on the Republican side.

I ran into a Rubio supporter today who somehow missed the last debate and was flummoxed at Rubio's demise. When I explained to him how he choked and kept repeating himself, he was ready to ditch him as well, reasoning "if he cannot handle the pressure of a tough debate than how can he be capable of handling the pressure of the Presidency". All eyes on South Carolina now where its really between Trump and Cruz. The next debate will probably determine who will win there as well.

Sanders has a big chance of causing an upset. As either people don't know him or didn't believe he could win. But that has started to change the major problem for Democratic Party will be that Sanders and Clinton probably will reach the convention at parity or ahead for the Democratic convention. And Hillary will be selected by Democratic bigwigs. That could destroy any chances of Democrats winning the presidential elections.
As far as the Republicans go Trump will probably reach the convention with the most delegates the longer the number of candidates stay high. And with different candidates apart from trump being ahead in different states most will not be willing to quit as Republican party not happy with Trump or Cruz so they will be thinking they are in with a chance.
Personally as a non American and a Pakistani I would prefer Sanders over Hillary as she is as Hawkish sometimes more Hawkish than some of the Republicans.

Bernie is a Jew. You guys should know that . Lol

To be honest he is a moderate Jew and as a Pakistani, I dont think I have anything against him (or as a Muslim American either)

They tend to be more sympathetic towards Muslims than ultra conservative Christians post 9/11.

a christie/trump ticket might swing some voters in the middle towards the republicans.

I still have a feeling he is hoping for Trump to win and pick him as his running mate.

a christie/trump ticket might swing some voters in the middle towards the republicans.

Even though it sounds very logical, I wonder if Trump will ever do that. If both of them have the same appeal and same voter base, how would you gain electorally from your VP pick. Plus, Christie did very poorly in NH and that in itself makes him a weak candidate. In Trump's case, he will need someone who has a slightly different base, maybe someone who appeals to the evangelicals or a slightly moderate candidate to pick up those independents. What if he is black or latino or a female. What about Ben Carson? What about Carly Fiorina? What about Marco Rubio?

Rubio would be the most logical choice in my opinion. Broad appeal, latino, socially conservative and someone with one foot in the establishment and the other foot in the Tea Party movement.

I hate to say it but it looks like Trump might be our next President. It will truly be the saddest day for America in my opinion.

We have become a nation of Reality TV enthusiasts who hold the Kardashians in higher esteem than educators and other contributing members of the society.

What do you guys think now that the field has come down a bit. Who will be the nominees a Sanders vs Trump would be an epic **** you to all the career and Establishment politicians.
Hillary Clinton despite democratic party and media supports seems to be faltering. Trump so far has got an open field with the rest of the republicans fighting each other to be his opponent but no has gotten any traction.

What a catfight of a debate :)))

"You're a liar"
"NO YOU'RE A LIAR !"

Trump clashed with Bush, Rubio clashed with Cruz, Carson was asleep at the podium as usual and to be fair to Kasich, he tried to stay above the fray.

How can anyone vote for these GOP jokers though, that wasn't a Presidential debate but a bad reality show. Its the same spiel as well, we'll cut taxes for our rich donors, we'll throw out all the illegals, we idolise Ronald Reagan (who BTW did blanket amnesty for illegal immigrants, funny how they didn't mention that) and we'll regulate less - change the script already.

US politics is in a real **** storm at the moment everything is looking like its lining up for the left. Now a right leaning sitting chief justice died. Republicans were hoping that next presidential term when a left leaning one is expected to retire they will have the presidency to replace with a right leaning one. Now Obama get to replace the right leaning one. Its political drama that you might not get on TV.

Its a high stakes game right now with both the Presidency and the Supreme Court up for grabs.

One final point about that debate - I will never say this again but thank you Donald Trump. Why ? For finally busting the GOP myth that George Bush "kept us safe" when he clearly didn't, he ignored several CIA warnings that OBL was determined to attack inside the US, 9/11 happened under BUSH'S watch and he even rightly said Bush lied about WMDs in Iraq !

Even the Democrats can't even muster the guts to say that (which infuriates progressives like me) so it was extraordinary to see someone up on that Republican stage not repeating the "Bush kept us safe" talking point.

Yes, Donald says without any hesitation, whatever he thinks but he is not at all a presidential material at all, running a company is not like running a country that too a huge one with thousands of issues. Sometimes he sounds like a crazy person, says things which cannot be done but enough to excite some non-serious voters.

How can he expel 12 million illegal immigrants including children born here ?
How can he build a three thousand mile long wall and have Mexico pay for it.
His whole campaigns is full of BS.
Unfortunately none of the GOP candidate a good one this time, all look joker to me, no one like Romney was .

Man I lol'd when I saw Cruz speaking Spanish to Rubio while Trump was in between them. Trump's facial expression was hilarious, and for the entire time I was picturing Trump imagining there was a wall on either side of him :))

16% of Trump supporters say Whites are a superior race, highest of any GOP candidate:

Eric Garner's daughter just endorsed Bernie Sanders in an emotional video

About half a year ago, Bernie Sanders's campaign was off to a rough start with racial justice activists — Black Lives Matter protesters were interrupting his rallies, demanding that he speak out about criminal justice issues, and characterizing the supposedly progressive candidate as weak on an increasingly important issue in the Democratic coalition.

On Thursday, we got a huge sign of just how much things have changed: Sanders was endorsed by the daughter of Eric Garner, the unarmed 43-year-old black man who died after a New York City police officer put him in a chokehold.

The very emotional video, produced by the Sanders campaign, tries to adapt Sanders's message — of a political revolution against the elite and powerful — to the criminal justice system and racial justice.

Erica Garner argues, in between clips of Sanders discussing racial disparities in the criminal justice system and calling to hold police accountable, "I believe Bernie Sanders is a protester … He's not scared to go up against the criminal justice system. He's not scared … And that's why I'm for Bernie."

Sanders will certainly find a big set of interest groups to fight in the criminal justice system: Unions for police, prison guards, prosecutors, and other actors in the criminal justice systems, along with private prison companies, are strong supporters of the status quo and tough-on-crime laws.

But this is also a smart, timely political pivot. Not only does it follow famed racial justice writer Ta-Nehisi Coates's statement that he'll vote for Sanders, but it also precedes primary elections in the critical states of Nevada and South Carolina, which are far more diverse than the states that have voted so far.

After Hillary Clinton effectively tied Sanders in Iowa and lost big in New Hampshire, her campaign has been hoping that the diversity of the next few states would play in her favor, due to her much broader support among minority voters in polls so far. But Sanders is making an effort to change that demographic math. We'll see if it works.

What an embarrassment Anderson Cooper is. CNN liberal bias my foot.

Softball after another at that GOP Town Hall. No followups or substantive questioning. I kid you not, he literally asked Ted Cruz questions such as:

"What's your favourite musical ?"
"Oh, do you sing to your wife ? What do you sing ?"
To Marco Rubio - "do you like EDM (electronic dance music) ? What music do you dance to ?"

These are candidates to become President of the most powerful nation on earth ! Why not hold them to account about the million crazy things they've said on this campaign ? And yet he turns up to Democratic debates with a machine gun and will grill their candidates to the nth degree. You pathetic excuse for a journalist Anderson Cooper.

He doesn't want the republicans to decide on the nomination so quickly hoping to keep it at a 3 way for as long as possible.[emoji6]

Guess even he's realized how much of a joke this election has become and doesn't care anymore.

To his credit, he did call out Jon Ritzheimer and made him look like an imbecile last year.

So Clinton wins Nevada and Trump wins SC.

Interestingly, Sanders won amongst whites and Latinos, but Clinton won 76% of the African-American vote which constitutes 12% of the vote - that's her 4% lead right there.

On the GOP side it increasingly looks like the nomination is a lock for Trump. Wasn't the massive 15-20% lead that some predicted but it means the only way Trump can possibly be defeated is if all the others unite behind one candidate. Kasich will be under pressure to drop out and Jeb Bush already has, ending a dismal campaign.

So Clinton wins Nevada and Trump wins SC.

Interestingly, Sanders won amongst whites and Latinos, but Clinton won 76% of the African-American vote which constitutes 12% of the vote - that's her 4% lead right there.

Sanders needs to be Competitive for the black vote. He lost those 73-27 which was about the difference in the total votes he lost with.
Where as Trump is concerned republicans are screwed the longer Cruz stays in the race. With all the rest out he is being a spoiler. If Trump wins will like to see what happens with the republic voters do they vote Democrats or still vote for Trump. Funny thing is if Trump is the nominee his opposition will be a Socialist or Clinton both very hard for the republicans to swallow.

It's increasingly fascinating, isn't it?

Trump now has such a wide lead that even Rubio won't stop him. I'd thought he would until the Robot debate.

It's a shame, one by one the Republicans that I quite like and would feel safe having as rulers of the world keep falling by the wayside - Rand Paul, Chris Christie and Jeb Bush. I'm not kidding, I think Jeb Bush is just fine, for a Republican.

So we face a Trump versus Clinton presidential election. Which means that the country will be run by one of two East Coast liberals who are in bed with big business, although Trump is pretending to be the conservative that he so clearly is not.

That's a fascinating situation. Trump is the only candidate on either side who is proposing to be neutral on the Palestinian issue, although of course he is a buddy of Bibi in Jerusalem.

Somehow Trump has managed to profit from Republican Tea Party extremism in the form of an anti-establishment movement, but has hijacked the Republican Party for himself - and he is basically a Clinton Democrat.

Finally Trump has been rattled. Rubio busted him open on healthcare where Trump repeated himself over and over again - "there'll be a lot of plans" :))

Wolf Blitzer did a good job.

Aye. Had he been POTUS instead of Dumbya I don't think the MidEast would be in such a mess. Saddam would still be there and acting as a stabilising force.

No he hasn't been rattled you're dreaming if you think Rubio will win. He won't even have 1 state as a win until Florida on March 15 (when Trump may have the nomination wrapped up).

Nah Rubio ain't winning, never said that. I still think Trump has this nomination sewn up but it was a weak debate performance - that's obvious to anyone who watched, Rubio and Cruz double teamed him.

Despite that, Trump still manages to dominate the news cycle with Christie's endorsement.

One of Cruz or Rubio has to give way. Although Cruz is hated by the GOP otherwise they are blocking each other and letting Trump take the crown.
Trump has 35% of the vote but the other 55% are against him as well.

true. nobody is even talking about the debate since the christie endorsement.

Trump refuses to disavow David Duke and the KKK ! Both have come out in support of Trump, so the obvious thing to do would be to say you want nothing to do with the KKK and their ilk right ?! Wrong.

I have to do research on the groups :))) What a clown. He later claimed he didn't hear the question properly ! No wonder hatemongers like Duke and Coulter support him.

I am amazed how far this has gone. I strongly believed he wont win it but looks like he is getting the ticket. It's a sad sad situation. Hopefully Hilary or Bernie will be able to stop this bigot

Hillary isn't any great either. Media has her backing or else Bernie would rip her through. Sadly Hillary will win the Democratic nominee. Americans are dumb and they will have another puppet for a very long time.

i don't think he supports david duke or the kkk per se but he realizes where his voter base lies.

i also don't think he believes half the things he says. he was a democrat until a few years ago.
