Jeez when MJ is in form he looks great eh. When he's not he looks woeful. This is the same bloke who went wicketless for a hundred odd at the Gabba.

Mitchell Johnson making history here. Half hour till lunch, could get 5 in one session.

Finally we get an ashes contest.
 
Tbf, this is the perfect wicket for Johnson BUT the way he's moved the ball back in is what has caused the most problems.
 
He did once for a spell or two in England (last Ashes) but never consistently.
 
Even though MJ didn't get a wicket but last over was THE best over by him in this series
 
Something about the bouncy wicket and Johnson. He got his best return of 8 wickets in an innings in Perth and his best series was in South Africa on pitches like the one India's played on today.
 
I think he's just hit form today. He could be very much different in the second innings. Blows hot and cold.

Lunchtime. Australia steal the session after England looked like getting a big score. Great bowling by Johnson - game set up nicely. England will probably recover though, they bat all the way down.
 
Well I'm sure the longtime England fans are not surprised with this at all. after dominating for so long, we were due a bad session or two. You just got the feeling that something special was round the corner - I felt a shift in the momentum yesterday a tad, we let them get far too many runs. The last 5 wickets should not add 200 in that scenario.

Today though, there has been no shame in falling to such a hostile and brilliant spell of fast bowling, it's what test cricket is all about. And I don't think Strauss could have done very much about his delivery from Harris either, it was right on the money.

I happen to think that we can still nearly get to their score or even slightly ahead, but that's because I have seen a lot of our lower order and know how well it can recover. However, this is where observers of England could realise that losing Broad was a blow - he is a fine batsman and I'd feel a lot safer with him to come in next rather than Swann. It is really all on this partnership after lunch, and it's particularly down to Bell, who has developed into one of the team's best batsmen now - from a technical standpoint, he might just be head and shoulders above the rest. His batting has looked superb throughout 2010, but now it's time for a genuinely world class contribution. England are only 149 behind - Bell must realise that this is not many, really. If we want to retain a chance of winning this test match, he has to step up. Otherwise, you're looking at a deficit of 50-100 and if Australia get off to a solid start, England will be in serious danger of being batted out of the game.

Anyway, that was probably the most exciting session of the series. Looking forward to the next one.

Stuart Broad doing the lunchtime stint on TMS. Very calm, knowledgeable and intelligent young man. A long career in broadcasting ahead for him, after hopefully a sparkling cricketing career.

I'm bummed there's no way I can listen to him on the commentary. Someone at the Guardian blogged last night about how putting him in the commentary box was a terrible idea, but he's always sounded very polite and, actually, smart in his off-field interviews etc. so I was curious to get a second opinion. Thanks!

I was dubious too, felt like a move by TMS to try and get more listeners rather than significantly improve the knowledge and banter. Likewise, I suspected that Broad merely fancied staying out in the sun for a bit longer, and that's the reason why he said yes. But we've all been wrong. Taking in an analyst from the current England setup was a very clever move. He sounds like he really knows the game and knows how to bowl - read an article the other day that mentioned him as a tactician and a potential future captain, and with every passing moment this is looking more possible, although Bell is a strong candidate to me as well (not sure about Cook's leadership credentials) Anyway, Broad has been a valuable contributor on TMS who will surely be invited back again. I am sure the toffs at the Guardian are unlikely to admit they were wrong in future articles, so try and get hold of the interview from lunchtime which I hear will be widely available on the internet before long (BBC website) :)

I can see it. Specially as he develops as an all-rounder.

commentators curse. They were mocking Siddle for bowling short and it worked.
 
I just have to put it out there. Watching test matches being played in Australia and England is so much better compared to everyone else.

The production quality is miles ahead of everyone, the colours pop. TV cameras in Pakistan are still stuck in the 1970s and it does not make for a fun viewing.
 
Peeps who were saying the Waca wicket is not a bouncy or quick one should seriously look at this game, it looks more hostile than the one India have in Centurian...........

Amazing that this Kookaburra is still swinging; a potent combo when mixed with some proper Perth chin music.

Unlucky for Prior but you could say that Sid forced him into that error. The England boys don't get to bat on this sort of track in E&W.

This is where we could use a certain blond #8 with a test match 168 to his name.......
