9.45am The pitch is flat with a tinge of green. Shane Warne reckons it will be slow on day one and get quicker as the match wears on. Definitely a bat-first wicket, is the consensus among the commentators out in the middle.

There are some very questionable moustaches in this match. It's all in a good cause, Movember, but Kevin Pietersen's mo is particularly disturbing. He looks like a 1950s movie star. And in a throwback to the 1970s, there are hairy upper-lips galore in Australia's pace attack, though Siddle and Johnson haven't quite got the Dennis Lillee thing happening yet.
