he hasnt mentioned anything about it BUT id be surprised if he got rid of them - the reserves are so important to help develop your younger players and im sure the Chairman would not allow KK to get rid of it. That was arguably the stupidest thing KK did as our manager, a mind boggling decision tho im sure he must have had some reason for it

he has mentioned it...

he said the reserves and academy was scrapped for 'reasons beyond his control' last time. He said if he had a choice he would of had one..

although what he said at the time..remember reading 90 mins mag...he said he scrapped it because it would make team more competitive for places.

maybe singing the party line...

ah right okay, that makes sense - i never read that anywhere.

nowadays its criminal imo if you dont have a reserve side and its good that we are finally doing something about that and more importantly the academy - who only a few years ago got the facilities that a premier league team deserves. The likes of Carrick shudnt have to go to London to find a club with decent facilities, we should be taking all the local talent

Not sure about the Dennis Wise appointment. Cant see how it will work with Keegan, Wise, Shearer and McDermott all in there ?

Has Newcastle won a game yet with their saviour, Keegan?

Not yet, but I reckon that win will come sooner rather than later. Possibly against Boro on weekend.

Amir said:

not yet..

we are playing much better footy though!

our problem is in the final third..but that will get better with more training..i doubt there was much training if any after the cup game..probably stayed down south! He only been at the club less than 2 weeks.

also, we lacking couple of experienced forwards/defenders/midfielders and shola has been out for a long time. Plus Barton has just returned after his misdemenour.

Our squad on the whole is lean.

Although, put in perspective - it is better than say we started winning straight away for a few weeks because of regime change and then reverting to type. - Usually a change in regime leads to instant results for a short period.

Exactly. The start of the season was promising enough but just crashed after a few weeks

A friend of mine (a Scouser), went to the Newcastle Boro game at the weekend and said it was the best atmosphere he had ever experienced at a football match.

Got to give it to the Geordies, they certainy love their footy.

Just a shame we do not have too much to shout about at the moment BUT then again it could be worse, we could be owned by Yanks :D

i've got a sneaky suspicion that king kev won't see the season out...discuss...

the media allready seem to be sharpening their knives:

quite a few "bitchy" comments about "no win yet," "no goals yet," intimations that wise and co. were appointed without kk's approval

but more so because the sparkle from kk's eyes is not there this time around...

Hmmm - that is what the bookies and sections of the media seem to think so BUT the fans are unsure where that is coming from. Perhaps it was the appointment of Dennis Wise, many people are convinced it wont work BUT Wise and KK have said it will (tho they have to say that really)

I think he will stay unless we get relegated - aslong as we survive we know that the summer is when all the transfer activity will take place and aslong as KK is given the cash im sure he will buy the players that will make us a decent team again

I hate the media with a passion, they are so vindictive about our club - they all go on and on about "newcastle are not a big club, they are deluded and no one cares about them" BUT those very idiots are the one's that write articles upon articles about our team, they need our team to sell their trashy papers.

The reason the twinkle aint their is cos KK has a big task ahead of him, he knows we have a small squad with many weakness and he cant add to that until the summer.

not necessarily - its a sort of vicious circle now. end of the day we love our club, that is not a crime and we want our club to be the best, again not a crime BUT the media lot seem to think we shudnt love nor expect the best from our club - that is simply utter rot. Briane Read of the Mirror actually wrote a positive article about us, il see if i can dig it up

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/columnists/reade/2008/01/19/good-luck-kevin-the-game-has-missed-you-89520-20290762/

You'll be familiar with Kevin Keegan's charge sheet as it is being repeatedly read above a backing track of cackling laughter to certify why both he and the people of Newcastle are clinically insane.

He's a bottler who talks in riddles, hasn't watched a live game for three years, is committing the cardinal sin of returning to an old club, and his only qualification is he used to be a local hero in an era when men permed their heads and soaked their armpits in Brut.

The gags and the accusations of madness were to be expected, yet I've been taken aback by the ferocity of the cynicism from people who frequently lament how clubs are selling their soul to corporate monsters. A ferocity summed up by the esteemed writer who accused the Geordies of harbouring "empty and increasingly pathetic dreams."

So what's pathetic about wanting to see your team play in a passionate, entertaining way, led by a manager you love, trust and believe in? That's what drew me to football in the first place. That's what it used to be all about.

Ah, they say, but football has changed dramatically in the 11 years Keegan has been away, as though he's a Japanese sniper emerging into sunlight after 63 years in the Burmese jungle. He's only 56 for Christ's sake, and been a genuine football man at the highest level for most of those years.

Does the fact that the Premier League has changed mean Keegan has suddenly become a bad judge of a player or lost his ability to motivate them?

Granted, the mind-boggling amounts of cash swilling around football has transformed the game, but certainly not for the better. Has Roman Abramovich's billions enhanced it? Has the American pincer movement on Anfield and Old Trafford improved it? No. Ask Kopites how they feel about their so-called saviours from across the pond now, or the thousands of Man United fans frozen out of Old Trafford because their wallets aren't thick enough.

Those who love the game should save their anger and cynicism for our friends in the north who ushered the Americans into Anfield and Old Trafford, instead of turning it on Mike Ashley for inviting Keegan back.

Who says ill-advised romantic gestures are worse for a club than the ill-advised sale of a club's soul to foreign businessmen who have no knowledge of football or love for the fans?

What's wrong with an owner attempting to give his supporters what they want?

Keegan's return may be an unmitigated disaster but who cares? Certainly not the only people who matter, the Newcastle fans. What right have outsiders to tell them they'd have been better off watching Sam Allardyce's brand of eye-bleedingly bad football fail?

Critics say he won't win them the Premier League so what's the point? But he doesn't need to. All he has to do is repeat what he did last time around by taking them back up to the division they belong in.

They're now in the top flight's third division with West Ham. If he gets them into the second with Aston Villa, playing exciting football, he'll be deemed a success. Into the first with Arsenal and his body will be interred in Newcastle Cathedral.

I wish him luck. Not because I was once a big Keegan fan but because I'm still a football fan.

One of many who can see that if our game is to survive as a sport for the masses, clubs need to bring in more men like him, whose sole intention is to make the people happy, and less foreign sharks whose only intention is to make the people emotionally and financially skint.

:14: :14:

Keegan has said he will properly able to train his players after the villa game(2 weeks off)as he has had little training time with the players.

Im a bit concerned with the news of Charlie being unhappy - he is a class player and i would be gutted if he left. He has been awesome this season and that is even tho he has mostly played at left back. The sooner we get Enrique back the better cos we need Charlie in left midfield

problem with charlie is that his family is in london and he is up north!

enrique will back hopefully considering he played u21s midweek.

That is beginning to annoy me with all our players - whats with them and their families in London.

They gey paid a hefty wage and London is only a 1 hour flight away, its not on the moon or alternatively they could get their family to move up here.

Also Charlie needs to stop moaning and be a bit more appreciative, he was a nobody until SBR signed him and now he is a cracking player who will certainly get better. Anyhow he only signed a new contract not that long ago, if i was KK i wudnt sell him even if he asks to leave - id rather he rots in the reserves than swan off to the bright lights of London

Shocked at the news that N'Zogbia may leave at the end of the season. He has looked one of Newcastle's best players this season.

Its the bright lights of London - its too luring for these young lads.

Im sick of these players that are only too willing to pick up a hefty wage and have no hesitation in signing a lengthy contract, only to say they want to leave a few months down the line.

Ungrateful idiots

^^ I agree, this is getting seriously annoying.

Whenever we seem to be getting somewhere in terms of building our squad, we lose key players.

I do get the whole wanting to be close to your family thing but it's kinda coincidental how all their families live in London...

Charlie was in Newcastle before his family moved to London and the guy earns a lot of money, he could have his family move to Newcastle if they want to be together. I mean if Real Madrid cam for him would he say no because his mum and sister are in London

Keegan sets sights on Henry

from SkySports.com

Kevin Keegan hopes Newcastle United can strike 'lucky' and bring Thierry Henry back to the Premier League.

Henry left Arsenal for Barcelona last summer, but has yet to recapture the form which saw him become the English game's finest player.

And Keegan, who was no stranger to major signings during his first spell as Newcastle boss, would relish the opportunity to sign the French striker.

"I would like to fetch Thierry Henry back to England," Keegan told Radio Newcastle. "He's the best player I've seen in the Premiership.

"When you're pitch-side, what I've seen him do to good players has been incredible.

"Sometimes you can take advantage of a situation and get what I call lucky."

During his previous tenure, Keegan spent a then world record fee of £15million on Alan Shearer and he would have no qualms in setting a new landmark.

He added: "I'd like to do what we did last time and surprise people. It would be nice to break a world record.

"Why rule it out? I'd like to bring players here that amaze people and we stop just talking about being a big club - but, with our actions, we show that we are.

"Sometimes people limit themselves by saying, 'we can't do that'. You say 'why not?' and they don't give you an answer.

"If we can get this club going in the right direction we have the owner who will find us the money for these players. You start by building up trust with the people who provide the finance that you can find these players at the right price. It's easy to get players to a club once it's flying in the right direction."

Keegan also suggested circumstances are different at St James' Park compared to 11 years ago when he quit as manager.

"I was here five years, but the club was being floated, people were being discarded," he continued. "I worked to build the club up, but at the time loads of promises were not kept, and priorities changed, so I got out."

More rubbish as usual from the Media BUT the mongs out there really lap it up.

This quote was taken out of context from his phone in on the BBC with Mick Lowes. KK was actually asked by a caller "if you could sign any one player in the world?" and KK mentioned Henry - doesnt mean he is going to go for him

I would love it if we got Berbatoon - would be a bigger coup than the Shearer signing, much bigger

Another away game another loss. Things not going very well at the moment and with the games we have coming up it is only going to get worse. Hopefully the teams below us keep losing cos at the moment we cannot rely on ourselves.

The summer cannot come soon enough for us, the team needs overhauling big time. The only players i would keep are Given, Taylor and Charlie. The rest i cudnt care less about.

It is all about survival this season, lets avoid the drop. regroup, get rid of the rubbish and spend big.

HOWAY KING KEV :11:

Uh oh, we only have 2 more points than Sunderland.

Come on toon, sort yourselves out and start picking up the odd point at the very least!

Villa are doing well this season but we should still have done better against them.

true - it is worrying. i cant see us getting anything from our next 3 games and even the 4th one away to Birmingham is gonna be tough.

Man Utd stars in Toon firing line

Toon fans can aim their golf balls at a Ronaldo cut-out
Newcastle United fans have been given the chance to vent their frustration by hitting golf balls at Manchester United players before the two clubs meet.
A golf course on Tyneside has placed life-sized cut-outs of six United players in its driving range.

The stars in the firing line include, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez and Edwin Van der Sar.

The idea came from Parklands Golf Course in Gosforth, ahead of the league meeting on 23 February.

'Light-hearted'

The dummies have been placed at 100m, 150m and 200m intervals on the range.

David King, Parklands manager, said: "The return of Kevin Keegan has reminded Newcastle fans - as if any reminder were needed - of how Manchester United pipped us for the Premiership title in 1996.

"Putting the dummies up on the driving range is a light-hearted way of letting Newcastle supporters release some tension in the days running up to the match."

The dummies will be kept after the game and will be re-used to display other teams' players.

"They will be no doubt be pressed into action again when feelings are running particularly high," added Mr King.

Clever marketing from the Golf Course management - that is the Golf Course that i go to althought i have not been since the Summer and i wont be going until the weather improves.

At this time of year obviously not as many people play Golf or even attend the drive range so its a cool little marketing tool - a nice way to vent your frustrations although missing your target would be frustrating aswell

Yes we are - tho we were hoping it was going to be changed to Virgin Rocks :D

Im not too sure what the implications are with the bank being nationalised.

Newcastle seek Northern Rock talks

from Telegraph.co.uk

Newcastle want urgent talks with their shirt sponsors, Northern Rock, following the Government's decision to nationalise the bank this week.

The beleagured bank signed a five-year deal with Newcastle in 2005 worth £25 million and although most of that money was paid up front - and spent by former chairman Freddy Shepherd on the £16m signing of Michael Owen - the club are anxious to know whether the contract will now be cancelled.

Northern Rock's new executive chairman Ron Sandler announced a review of the bank's business plan on Monday. But with the company now in public ownership questions are certain to be asked over whether it is appropriate to continue with the sponsorship programme, which also includes Newcastle Falcons rugby team and Durham County Cricket Club.

A spokesman for the Treasury made it clear yesterday that while the UK taxpayer was now effectively the bank's only shareholder, the business would continue to be run at an arm's length from the Government, so any sponsorship is the responsibility of the bank's directors.

Northern Rock insisted yesterday that they were not about to rip up the deals, which all run until 2010. A spokesman said: "We are honouring our obligations and the contracts are in place."

For Newcastle Falcons, the need to hold talks with the bank will be even more crucial. They sold their Kingston Park home to them for £15m in 2006 and now lease it back from the bank on a 10-year deal.

I expect the sponsorship to remain until 2010, since most of the money has been paid it wudnt make sense for Northern Rock to cancel.

Im sure Mike Ashley would be happy with this, i reckon we might end up having Sports Direct as shirt sponsor

So now we can say that barcoded shirt belongs to all the british taxpayers? :D

Geordie, big game this Saturday against Boro (if I am correct?). You think Keegan has enough to get his first victory (and against I guess what would be geographical rivals).

Actually we are playing you lot on Saturday at St James. Im certainly not looking forward to it since i expect nothing less than a hammering, we really are struggling at the moment and the last thing we need is tough fixtures like this.

Wow you are absolutely correct and I knew that. I am surprised I even forgot. That is what alot of studying at 1 am in the morning does to you! (I was browsing pics and one of the stupid headline goes "Keegan grins before Newcastles clash with middlesborough")

What the hell were they talking about!!! What we need is an easy fixture like this. Only one point from the past 2 games...we need an easy 3...hopefully you guys won't make it too hard for us.

Not a chance - its all about damage limitation the next few games for us. We then have to ensure we beat those teams that are near us, certainly going to be a bumpy ride for us the next couple of months

You will be surprised. Sometimes the worst of sides can turn up out of nowehre and hold us off really well and even score teh odd upset victory. Like Fergie said in the 90s...teams turn up their game when they play us. :D (its somewhat true!)

I wasn't expecting another thrashing, fair enough we're not doing great as team but this is just disgraceful.

JammydodgA said:

I was expecting a thrashing - we are struggling, Man-U are flying high and it was inevitable. Man-U always hammer us when we are down in the dumps.

Its not great right now, infact its terrible BUT atleast it allows KK to see that most of the players are not good enough. We seriously need to get rid of the likes of Barton, Butt, Smith etc etc

We have Blackburn at home next week - its simply a must win for us. 3 points would take a lot of pressure off from us and allow us to play with a bit more freedom

I think GA was talking about first XI or perhaps last season. I think where it has helped spuds is that they have a bigger squad to choose from and pool of strikers who are fit and available.

Atm, we are really bare bones in terms of central midfielders ...which will be gutted and remedied in the summer.

cant remember the exact timing of that comment BUT it was when we had a midfield of Charlie, Emre, Parker and Milner/Nobby.

Unfortunately for us Nobby and Parker were sold (thanks FAT SAM), Charlie is playing left back, Fat Sam never played Emre and now KK is here Emre is injured, so it only leaves Milner and jokers like Barton.

Our midfield will be allright in the summer - Charlie providing he isnt sold should go back to Left Wing - we will need to sign a couple of CM's

I can wait for the 30th, we have more important games before that - just like the previous 3 matches we will probably play average and beat you again :D

Hughton appointed coach at Newcastle

from NUFC.com

It's now been confirmed that Chris Hughton has joined the SJP coaching staff, with Kevin Keegan making it clear what his immediate role will be:

“Defensively, we need some work on shape and I think Steve (Round) and him will be a really good force together on the training pitch.

“That’s where we’ve got to work on things to get it right here.

“He’s good with players and good around players. He’s got a good way with them. He’s an experienced player himself, so they know when he’s saying it, he’s been there and done it himself.”

Hughton was assistant to Martin Jol at White Hart Lane until last October and as a player served Spurs between 1977 & 1990.

The 49 year-old Londoner also played and coached at international level for the Republic Of Ireland.

He follows a former Eire team mate into the role of defensive coach, with Keegan briefly employing Mark Lawrenson in a similar role the last time he managed here.

PS - Hughton's son Cian is on the book of Spurs, with the 19 year-old having been capped at U18 level by Ireland and last season seeing him break into the reserve side.

Not too familiar with Hughton as a coach - some people rate him whilst some say he was the Terry Mac of Spurs. Anyhow i hope he can get involved straightaway thought understandably he is going to be overawed since he is joining a bigger club than his last - will take time for the nerves to settle :19:

I’ll have cash to splash

from icnewcastle.co.uk

KEVIN KEEGAN is confident that Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley will come up with the money to allow him to go on a summer spending spree.

The United manager’s first priority is to keep the club in the Premier League and, with just two victories in their last 18 games meaning only 10 points out of 54 going into the bag, there is still a lot of work to be done.

Keegan is quite rightly insisting that all transfer plans and talk of new contracts for the likes of Steven Taylor go on the back burner until United are safe.

He has set his sights on the 40-point mark, but bearing in mind United have an inferior goal difference to every team in the league apart from Derby County and Reading this may not be enough.

However, Keegan is fully aware he will have to strengthen his squad in the close season, especially as United did not add to their first-team squad in the January transfer window.

And the £9m net Sam Allardyce coughed up for some mediocre signings in the summer means that United have been one of the lowest spenders in the Premier League in the last two windows.

When I asked Keegan if he was confident he would have the funds to bring in new players he replied: “We haven’t really discussed it but I was promised money when I came so it’ll be there.

I don’t think I need worry about that.

“But the first thing I need to do is get to 40 points and make sure we’re in the Premier League.
That’s still there to be done.

“Then I’ve got to go and get the three, four or five players that are hopefully going to turn this place around.

“I’ve got a small squad. There are so few options within this squad.”

Thats good to know because money is what we need if we want to catch up to the likes of Villa, Blackburn, Pompey and Citeh who have moved ahead of us.

BUT like KK said first things first we must survive. IF that happens then its certainly going to be an exciting summer :27: :27:

Diatta deal close

from NUFC.com

The signing of Senegalese defender Lamine Diatta (pictured) has moved a step nearer with news that he's undergoing a medical at SJP.

32 year-old Diatta is a free agent and has been training with the Newcastle squad for the last week.

He made one appearance at the recent African Nations Cup Finals alongside Habib Beye and Abdoulaye Faye.

However, he was reported to have announced his international retirement after Senegal failed to qualify for the later stages of the event.

The defender began his professional career with Toulouse before moving on to Stade Rennais via a brief spell at Marseille.

2004 saw him join Lyon, where he played alongside Claudio Cacapa, winning two French league titles.

Two years later he made the switch to St.Etienne before a stint in Turkey with Besiktas which ended last year, when he bought himself out his contract.

Diatta would become the fourth Senegalese international to play for us, after the afore-mentioned Faye and Beye and old boy Amdy Faye.

Were he to be included in the squad for Saturday and make his debut, he'd come up against Liverpool for the third time this season.

October 2007 saw him appear as a late substitute for Besiktas as they beat the Reds 2-1 in Turkey, taking his place in the starting XI for the return game at Anfield - which ended 8-0 to Liverpool.....

Things must be bad if we have to sign him. Im not sure what they are expecting him to do - our defence as a unit is in bad shape and its certainly not going to change overnight with the signing of an ols freebie

A poor day for us - Im more dissapointed with Reading winning as opposed to us losing (which was expected)

Anyhow firstly we need Everton and Arsenal to pick up 3 points tomorrow.

Then we need to make sure we get something from the Birmingham (A) and then the Fulham (H) game. Failure to win against Fulham would mean we are going to get relegated.

Atleast relegation wont be totally bad, it means Season Ticket prices for next season might drop in price a bit :D

GA, you guys were pathetic should not have burned the fuel and come down here.. An embarassment to the supporters who pay good money... you guys wont go down because of the crap in the bottom half.. serious problems in geordieland

Its been pathetic for a long time now - it all started under FAT SAM, King Kev is just unfortunate he inherited a bunch of losers.

I do think we will go down, you say their is cr@p it the bottom well we are as bad if not worse than that lot.

Its getting to the point that we MUST win our 3 home games against Fulham, Reading and the Mackems - there is simply no room for error in those games. Against Blackburn we played very well BUT we still lost, cant afford that to happen again.

If we survive then Im positive about the future - the main thing is survival then we can concentrate on a mass clearout - get rid of the rubbish and the non triers.

kin ell geordie lad, i've just loked at your fixtures, b'ham next and then fulham, 2 monster games, what d'ya reckon?

on top of that, you've got to play reading and sunderland.....

I aint too confident - Birmingham have become a decent side at home under McLeish whilst we are rubbish away (actually we are rubbish home aswell :( :( ) so Im not expecting anything from that game tho a win would be MASSIVE and a point would be decent.

The Fulham home game (Inshallah I will be going to that one) is HUGE - a MUST win, failure to win that and we are definately going down. Actually failure to win those 3 home games (Fulham, Reading and Sunderland) and we are going down.

Its going to be an interesting month or so - I hope we survive BUT its not the end of the world if we dont - will just have to enjoy the Championship next year :)

I think N'castle will survive by the skin of their teeth!!.I believe the more difficult fixtures are over for them so they should be confident of winning some points against mid table opposition.KK hasn't been able to flex his muscle in the transfer market so needs to be given atleast a few more seasons but i am sure their fans are realistic.Next season they should aim to finish in the top ten.

Im not so sure about that - we still have Spurs away, Everton away and Chelsea at home. The Everton and Chelsea games are our last 2 games so we need to be safe before those cos expecting to survive by getting points against those 2 is asking way too much. If we can win those 3 crucial home games and maybe get an away win then I reckon we should survive BUT failure to win 1 of those games will mean we are going down. Also we are effectively 1 point lower than the other sides because our Goal Difference is terrible.

KK will definately be given time by the fans, we all know the reason we are in this position is because of Fat Sam - KK is just unfortunate he has inherited a side that is used to playing a very negative style of football - It has improved under Keegan BUT we have had some tough fixtures (Arsenal at Emirates twice, Man-U at home, Villa away, Liverpool away etc etc) the press seems to ignore all that when criticising KK and us.

The main thing is survival and then we can sort our side out in the summer. I and most Newcastle fans are not thinking about next season because we dont know whether we will be in the Premiership or not.

Anybody worked out yet what Dennis Wise's role is at Newcastle?

He is Executive Director (Football) and he reports to the Chairman Chris Mort and Kevin Keegan on matters related to recruitment.

Dennis Wise is basically heads the team involved in signing players, scouting and youth development.

When the new owner came to the club and they did a review, they felt that the club needed a 'football' person in the boardroom and they selected Dennis Wise for that role, also they employed those other 2 guys (Jiminez and Vetere) to work under Wise. AND we have already seen that they are doing a good job so far (we signed a couple of youngsters in Januray and have been linked with plenty more since)

seems wise has a pretty low key role, don't see his name in the media etc.

and thats the way it is meant to be - he is in the background searching for players for this club (tho we dont sign anyone KK doesnt want) and improving the academy (which is under stocked at the moment)

The media made it out to be some sort of conflict between Wise and Keegan BUT that is far from the case. Both guys are doing their own jobs without interference

straight up GA, don't you think it's a bit starange he's not even based in the city?

i mean how often does he meet with keegan? do they have an e-mail/phone relationship?

considering wise has spent the past few years in footballs bargain basement, where even at that level his buys ahve been questionable, is he qualified to root out premier league footballers?

Not at all - his job doesnt require him to be in Newcastle (altho he does spend some time here tho London is his main home) so it wudnt make sense for us to DEMAND he stays in Newcastle. One of the reasons Wise accepted the job was because he wanted to spend more time in London and this job allows him to do that (oh and the healthy pay packet)

I dont know how often he meets Keegan or how they communicate - its not like we fans are privvy to that kind of information.

I agree maybe he doesnt exactly have the experience of signing players BUT those 2 guys with him are experienced (especially that Vetere fella who came from Madrid , he is well rated) and so far it seems like they are doing some good work. The fruits of which will not be seen until a few years time.

I know the media have criticised the move and made it out to be something its not BUT I and many other newcastle fans are okay with it.

GA, what would you think if someone told you Lippi has been approached by Newcastle to replace Keegan.. I think he will reject the move if any of his past statements regarding English etc are to be considered but it would be sign of ambition.

Lippi is a brilliant manager BUT im not too sure - Keegan is loved by the fans and deserves a chance, it hasnt went too well at the moment BUT that isnt all due to him - a lot of it is the fault of the past regime.

We need a bit of stability at the club and Keegan can provide that for the next 2-3 years.
