no he didnt - he played as a striker at Leeds.

Just cos he loved to get stuck in Fergie assumed he could convert him into a midfielder BUT he is a rubbish midfielder and now he is a rubbish striker. Toony is spot on, Fergie has ruined the player

I would be devastated if we signed him - i really hope he picks Boro ahead of us tho one would have to be a complete nutjob to do that

well yesterday the two teams agreed a fee so more than likely he is gonna go to you :D

says who? just rumours hopefully cos we need defenders, so signing a a player who is neither a striker or a midfielder makes no sense

Dyer given permission to talk to West Ham after the clubs agreed a fee.

there is no point of him going to you lot because your strike force is really good but i dont really care where he goes but leaves the club before the deadline

Why do other clubs sell there british players for inflated prices and we only got £7mil for parker and now only £6m for dyer!!

Big Sam speaking after the hull match said dyer's replacement should be complete by tomorrow.

well we did get duff for £5m and parker for £5-6m

dyer loses half his value with injury record.

parker was sold by us cos we wanted to.

although players like Rossi for £6.7m is inflated.

i think your wrong there. id rather have rossi for 6.7m than chopra for 5million. rossi in two years will be worth 15million or more if he continues to progress the way he is at the moment.

he did jack all for us on the ball wise when he played...

premiership footy doesnt suit him.

besides i was referring to the cost of rossi with dyer..

well to be fair to rossi, he didnt get a chance to prove himself in premiership either with u lot or man utd.

as for dyer, he spends most his time injured so i think the price is fair for him. yes he is a good player but he aint good to anyone if he gets injured every second game

it looks like smith is gonna be recruited...and cacapa (free transfer from Lyon) or what i like to call him kappa or Cocacabana.

LB is next on the hot list with probably also a RB- read sometime ago.

:6: :6: :6:

what a rubbish and pointless signing

"I think we'll be close by the end of the week to maybe one or two players, I would hope.

"Then after that I would look to get at least another two or maybe three in because if Kieron goes, whoever comes in to replace him, that's only one for one, so it's not actually improving the squad in terms of strength in depth.

"There's still three or four players need to be got on top of whoever we replace Kieron with."

dyer's replacement may not be smith...

Where does Smith suck less. As a striker or midfielder?

a striker BUT he has barely played as a striker in the last 3 years.

This is one poor signing, i dont know what Big Sam is thinking :29:

Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce is prepared to splash out £3m to sign Fulham's midfield powerhouse Papa Bouba Diop

I am happy with that if it goes through... considering Barton is likely to see some jail time at worse...unless he can get Dabo to defend him...

I think Police are prosecuting him rather than Dabo complaining of assault.

We have Martins, Owen, Viduka, Ameobi and we still signed him but probably not to play in strike but more in a midfield role.

he would never get in the spurs squad mate for a game,

hahah as a midfield player :)) shows the true ambition of newcastle if they are going to pay alan smith in midfield

i can see him warming the bench ..when everyone is fit.

That isn't going to happen!

Like Toony said, If the other strikers are fit (it's about time we had some luck as far as injuries go). He's a waste of money imo.

Anyone know what his temperament is like?

I suppose one good thing that has come out of signing him is that we can be sure allardyce doesn't have top raise cash from selling players, in order to buy players (cos if he did have to theres no way he'd spend 6 mill on smith)...but then we knew that story was bogus anyway...

As for Smith playing in a midfield role, surely we could have got a better (and natural) midfielder for a similar price.

allardyce likes playing with a strong centre forward like davies at bolton. he might see smith as the ideal target man for the likes of owen and martins to play off. To add to that smith works his socks off kinda like davies did at bolton

JammydodgA said:
Viduka is a strong centre forward

yep he is. he is also a moody guy who only plays well when he can be asked. a class player but only when he is in the mood

maybe, or it maybe it his versatility as a 'midfielder'.

Owen and Smith didnt link that well at all against Brazil.... Smith was kept quiet and was a average target man.

besides Smith was best at Leeds working off Viduka and not as a target man.

Besides Ameobi and Viduka are built for that role.

woohoo, 2 LBs linked today.

Baines and Dede (from Borrusia)

and the serbian cb from seville - Dragutinovic - who could be next in after Kappa.

I would be happy with either of the LB linked.

The dyer move is stalling to west ham

Newcastle have agreed a deal to sign LB Jose Enrique from Villareal for 6 million euros.

have to admit ..dont know anything about him. oTher than he is u21 international for Spain.

its a harsh reality that you will lose out to the bigger clubs - the smoggies and Mackems accept it, you should aswell :19:

Kappa has signed too...

never really seen the guy play so cant comment on how good he is BUT he is an experienced defender and has been part of a successful Lyon side - on a free it certainly is worth it and we desperately need players in

Also i havnt seen that Enrique play BUT again at this moment im just glad we are signing players

i must admit not knowing much of french football league players unless we face them in europe and have not idea of enrique ..not noticed him.

but they are still defenders.

just been reading Baines is still a target according to Big Sam.

Dyer deal has stalled cos Ashley wants more money £8m....hopefully we get our way. that £2m compensation should cover the difference.. :)) ;-)

good - let the idiot rot in the reserves for the next 2 years and then refuse to give him a testimonial

in the first half he did BUT he played in midfield in the 2nd half. He got man of the match, did well. Also said he would play wherever the manager wants him to - thats a refreshing attitude, a big change from the rubbish Dyer churns out

like i said before he will do well for newcastle and the newcastle fans will love his commitment

Yeh, his attitude does sound good.

I'll be nice-ish from now on and judge him at the end of the season :D

Geremi maybe made captain.

accordin to Setanta he has been made club captain BUT i havnt seen any comment from Big Sam regarding this

Geremi has been excellent for us so far - top notch and like Smith has said he will play wherever he is asked to

I think barton would make a good captain if he can stay out of trouble.

nufc said:

Imo that is very unlikely.

The whole idea of Barton being captain does not sit well with me at all.

I think Given would be a good choice, he's one of the most influential player in the team. Also, at times in the past, he's been one of only a few players that put 110% in and managed to pull out a good performance when the rest of the team were asleep (particularly our world class defence :D

barton needs to sort out his issues and keep a clean life outside football to be even considered.

atleast it shows there is money available, and the way we rejected the Dyer deal shows that we dont have a cash crisis otherwise we would have taken whatever was offered

i am sure money bags ashley would of reached for the lose change in his back pocket to cover us...

i agree with mort's assessment to get rid of the debt of £80m...which has increased because lack of champs league footy despite champs league wages..

i was reading he sold his 3% stake in adidas for £30m profit (£200m+ stake)

plus he has like £900m (+ whatever)in his bank account from his share sale of sports world + his substantial remaining stake in his businesses.

so if needs be he will cover.

Nice avatar Cricketkid. Brings back great memories... :110: lol

Anyway, I think we should be looking to buy 1-2 midfielders as well as strengthening our defence, since it looks like both Dyer and Nobby are on their way out.

Nobby's family must really love life wherever they are (London?) as he doesn't seem to want to leave saying that newcastle is destined for big things.

Or maybe he just believes the clubs in London (WH & Spurs) are destined for bigger things!

Dyer is definitely out. Heres an article I found on soccernet about how Dyer and Solano are viewed respectively

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/feature?id=453702&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab1pos1&cc=4716

It is commonly agreed that the best thing about Ruud Gullit's ill-fated stint in charge of Newcastle United was his purchase of a dynamic young starlet from Ipswich Town.

Kieron Dyer and Nolberto Solano: Heading for exit for family reasons.

Kieron Dyer's arrival for £6.5m is the only nugget worth remembering about a nightmare spell in which 'sexy football' evaporated to be replaced by warring factions, questionable tactics and relegation form.

However, few Toon fans will shed a tear if and when the pint-sized midfielder finally heads back down the M1.

In his eight years Dyer regularly sulked; refusing to play on the right wing, famously treating the captain's armband like a hot potato when brought on as a sub against Middlesbrough in the 2004/05 season, and making more headlines for his off-the-field antics than those he achieved on it.

In stark contrast, the vast majority of black-and-white followers will be distraught that Nolberto Solano is following Dyer out of the exit door.

The only thing the two players share is a lack of height. There the similarity ends.

With the exception of Shay Given, the Peruvian winger was unquestionably Kenny Dalglish's best acquisition. His immaculate touch and vision, a willingness to play anywhere to help the team, plus restricting his off-field activities to the odd blow on a trumpet, means Nobby leaves as an undoubted cult hero.

In his eight-years at St James' Park Dyer threatened. He threatened to stay fit, threatened to establish himself as an England regular, and once every blue moon he threatened the odd defence.

Most outside observers will point to his fitness problems as the major factor in his supposed failure at St James Park, but as anyone who saw him play regularly will agree, his form was never consistent when he was fit.

And his finishing was anything but Premier League.

Dyer's best spell was during Sir Bobby Robson's tenure, when he and Gary Speed formed a strong partnership in central midfield. If the ageing Speed was the holding midfield battler, desperately trying to protect a fragile and leaky defence, Dyer was the creative mind behind a lot of the Toon's forward moves.

But for an attacking player a goal tally of just 36 goals in 222 games - despite playing many of those games as a striker - speaks for itself.

As do his disciplinary problems, most notably when he and then team mate Lee Bowyer traded blows in front of a stunned St James' in April 2005.

There were also frequent driving bans, a notorious 'sex video' filmed while the star was on holiday and a hefty fine after being sent home from a club trip to Spain when he swerved an official club dinner to go drinking.

Kieron Dyer: £80k a week

Dyer fell out with Sir Bobby when he refused to play on the right-wing against Boro at the Riverside in August 2004, and then compounded the fans' misery when he gingerly handed on the captain's armband after replacing then-skipper Alan Shearer in the same game.

He looked to be heading out of St James' after that when his every touch was booed by his own supporters during an England friendly by those in the Gallowgate End, but somehow, after a grovelling apology to the manager and fans, he clung on.

When Graeme Souness arrived he instilled the sort of discipline many said had been lacking at Newcastle under Sir Bobby.

The fiery Scot warned Dyer he was only one more mistake away from a swift departure after the player was forced to visit the local police station having been caught relieving himself down a side-alley in the city's infamous Bigg Market party-district.

After that he actually buckled down and produced occasional flashes of the form which persuaded former England boss Sven Goran Eriksson to pick him whenever he was fit.

Certainly, the Scot saw him as key to his plans for the Toon. But it was not long after this purple patch that his injury jinx struck again, and he spent another seven months on the treatment table before coming back into contention, by which time Souness had been sacked and Glenn Roeder was in charge.

Certainly some fans felt sympathy for him at the pit of his injury despair - when he admitted to suffering bouts of deep depression - but many more had already lost patience with him prior to his hamstring troubles, not to mention the galling fact he was still pocketing a cool £80,000 a week during his time on the sidelines.

Both Roeder and even new Newcastle manager Allardyce extolled the virtues of a player, who always offered pace and a neat touch, but who never displayed the clinical finishing needed for someone who so often found himself in front of goal.

It was Michael Owen who the Geordies turned to for that, and during his unveiling on Tyneside the 20,000 fans who turned up to greet the England hitman also chanted Nobby Solano's name, forcing chairman Freddy Shepherd to bring him back to Tyneside.

And in his most recent stint Solano has exhibited all the characteristics that made such a hit first time round.

A sublime touch, an ability to pick out delicious passes at will, and a mentality that meant he put the team above his own personal desires. Last season he operated for many games as an emergency right-back.

Not only did he refuse to complain, but he worked hard and proved that he was a far better defender than Stephen Carr had ever been for the club.

Nolberto Solano: A Fans' favourite

It wasn't just his footballing skills that endeared him to the loyal ranks of the Toon Army, but he demonstrated more than enough eccentricity to be embraced as an adopted Geordie.

In Robson's days Solano used to call him to play trumpet down the telephone, and latterly, he joined a salsa band where his gigs attracted a loyal crowd of Magpie fans. He was also a very approachable man off the field and always had time to sign autographs, pose for pictures or shake hands with his adoring public.

Ironically, Dyer and Solano often played well together on the field - again under Robson - when the Peruvian's range of passing complemented Dyer's darting runs.

They are reportedly both leaving for family reasons, and though their destination may ultimately be the same, their goodbyes will not.

Solano has etched his name in Geordie folklore.

Dyer's will be erased from memory as soon as he drives over the Tyne Bridge for the final time.

Well done big sam and ashley for getting as much money out of him as possible

Our first home game of the season ended in a goaless draw.

Rozehnal had our best chance and Harper filled in well for Given, preventing Reo-Coker from scoring.

Cacapa became newcastle's 1,000th player when he came on for skipper (still not used to that) Geremi.

Joey barton says he can't wait till he's part of the team.......

well, I certainly can. :21:

For a 0-0 it wasn't a bad game but i think Villa shaved it. Both teams had decent chances but ours were better. If only Agbonlahor had looked up and passed to Reo Coker instead of scuffing his shot like he did. It probably would have given us the lead. Good save by Harper after Reo Coker's run and shot into the corner. A game of the defenses really with neither giving much away. A draw is a fair result but i can't help but think we should have got the 3 points.

Yeah i thought Villa were the better side - they had to excellent chances whilst we had none. The 4-3-3 just didnt do it for us today, Young and Agbonlahor had too much space and thats the last thing you give them 2 lads. We should have changed to a 4-4-2 BUT atleast it was a clean sheet which is a positive.

We desperately need Emre back or atleast sign a creative midfielder cos defensively our midfield is okay BUT it doesnt have the person who can unlock the opposition defence
