there is a saying here that goes 'shy bairns get nowt'

If we got half the players we have been linked with recently I would be happy.

Big Sam seems like he knows what he is doing in the transfer market, I cant wait to see what our side will look like come 1st september.

One helluva capture for Newcastle if they could get Cannavaro but I can't see it happening. Plus Chelsea needs a decent CB seeing what happened to this season...so they do not mind splashing cash.
Chelsea have taken care of their CB problem cause they'll have Ben Haim and Alex. Cannavaro will be a bit of a waste

Newcastle will open talks with Fulham defender Franck Queudrue on Monday about a £2m move

Newcastle are also hopeful of signing left-back Heinze and the club are also hopeful of holding on to Obafemi Martins

SAM ALLARDYCE could be ready to tempt Palermo with a cash offer for Italian international defender Andrea Barzagli.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Sicily club all summer, with Fiorentina keen to sign 2006 World Cup player.

But even though the player says he is happy to stay with Newcastle’s UEFA Cup opponents from last season, Barzagli revealed he could still leave if there was a “shocking development.”

And with Palermo prepared to sell the defender if they receive a bid of £11m, United could be in with a chance of signing the player regarded by Fabio Cannavaro as the next great Italian international defender.

Allardyce has stressed several times already since taking charge that the defensive area is his main priority in his recruitment drive and he wants to bring in up to three more defenders to go with Czech star David Rozehnal.

However, despite six-foot Barzagli’s insistence he would not join the club’s bitter rivals Fiorentina, newly promoted Juventus are monitoring his situation along with United, with his plea to stay at Palermo said to be designed to appease the often hostile Sicilian club’s supporters.

The player said over the weekend: “I can say that barring any shock developments, I will stay at Palermo.

“Having said that, with at least another 10 years of my career left, I need to look at all aspects, including the economic one.

“In the past, only Juventus were truly interested in me, but the coach preferred to look towards other options.”

Another player on United’s wish list is his Palermo clubmate Cristian Zaccardo, who also has caps for Italy and has played at the World Cup.

But the chances of winning the race for Barzagli seem to be more realistic for Big Sam.

Indeed, Palermo sporting director Rino Foschi last week said: “Andrea Barzagli seems willing to leave Palermo.

“After all, it’s better to have someone in your squad who is dedicated rather than with his mind focused on other things.

“He’s been on the transfer market for a while now. However, it’s his decision to leave the club.

“There are players who join Palermo and shine, and afterwards when they get a spot among the Azzurri, they want to plump for a stint in a bigger club.

“Barzagli is one of such players.”

Meanwhile, two players that United boss Allardyce is unlikely to sign are Fulham’s £3m-rated Franck Queudrue and Nice full-back Rod Fanni, with Big Sam keen to explore other options.

And United were cool today on weekend reports that they ware keen on Ronaldinho and Fabio Cannavaro.

Meanwhile, United are unlikely to sign Argentinian Aldo Duscher, who has been on trial over the last few days, due to concerns over the Deportivo player’s fitness.

since the premiership began we have finished higher than you plenty of times - the last couple of seasons were poor due to bad management and an awful injury list (if you had the injuries we did you would have been relegated)

Chelsea rejects? we have 3 ex-chelsea players. 1 of which rejected you lot, so you was rejected by the chelsea reject :))) :))) :)))

corrupt? where did you get than gem from? its best to stay quiet if all you are gonna say is something that is rubbish

i seeu still barking on your few years of success u had and u won jack all mate

spurs have a better team than newcastle and a squad so spurs would and can deal with injuries,

the so called player who rejected us is playing for a team that has over taken u lot for being the desperate club in getting players and paying them pathetic wages.

well having fat sam at the helm doesnt really help when his son was one of the main culprtis in the previous enquiery eh

i dont know what your problem is wasim but you seem to obsessed with newcastle.. you have a big squad but there is no doubt Newcastle will finish much higher now that they have a manager so maybe youre scared

What does wasim have to be scared of? I think he was within his rights to attack Geordie there. They have bit of a tiff however what an absurd comment by GA.

I mean Spurs to be relegated? Please! They hae a great squad depth! Much much much better than Newcastle! If anything, Newcastle probaly wishes it could have one of its 4 strikers last season.

Viduka scored 2 goals today adding to his 1 goal a couple of days ago. Reaching form before the premier league starts.

Geordies comment was a joke but wasnt as nonsensical as you think. Despite all the slack Newcastle got for their defense, they still conceded less goals than Tottenham. Now if they had even more injuries in defense and/or if Berbatov or Keene were injured they would have let in even more goals and wouldnt have had the firepower up front to offset their shortcomings at the back.

yeah spurs only had defoe and Mido to come in and take their places. its the style which both teams play an spurs played very attacking football in the 2nd half of the season.

not really - merely young players who have no experience whatsoever

If they had the injuries man for man that we had they would have been effed with a capital F

We only had ONE fit striker all season, who was a young lad coming from the italian league - asking him to lead the line was a frikking HUGE task.

We had for the most part of the season 10 first team players out at the same time - Spurs would have struggled with that. Their defence was worse than ours BUT can you imagin if it was injury ravaged and they had to go to their academy/reserves to field a team?

Ofcours i would have loved to have one of the Spurs strikers, cos we only had ONE bloody striker fit. The Spurs strikeforce was impressive last year BUT how well do you think they would have done if it was just Defoe all by himself or say Berbatov all by himself?

your style of play means jack when you DO NOT have the personnell.

Honestly if you only had ONE fit first team striker for the most part of the season how well would you have done?

Your strikers did well cos there was 4 of them and you could rotate them around

and he is slowly improving that international record of his which is pretty poor at the moment

Anyhow lets hope the Aussies lose their next match - in that sort of form we need Viduka at the toon

Barton's out for the start of the season with a broken metatarsal :)

Just what we needed :12: :12:

I hope we dont have an injury list like last season

We must sign a midfielder now imo

Congratulations Geordie, Freddy Shepperd has resigned as chairman and will be replaced by David Mort. (I could have got that first name wrong)

It's good to finally be rid of Shepherd.

Less welcoming news is that Dyer could be on his way to West Ham, Allardyce is right to be worried about our squads depth. Bet he regrets 'nudging' Parker out.

Anyway, Hope we go 4 SWP and that Chelsea are willing to sell.

Yep - good riddance, he was by and large a cancer that needed removing.

Yes large amounts of money was spent under his chairmanship BUT that was our money, he didn't dip into his own pockets to fund transfers so i aint giving him credit for that.

The only good managerial appointment he made was bobby robson BUT then he messed that up by sacking him 4 games into the season.

Anyhow the club needs to be run like a massive business cos that is exactly what it is. I hope the new chairman isnt in the news constantly like Fat Fred was

I am confident they new regime will do well BUT im a little concerned by the lack of transfer activity over the last couple of weeks - we desperately need a couple of defenders before the season starts BUT it doesnt seem like we are doing anything

* JammydodgA is Samieh?

Yeh, I expected us to have signed a few more defenders by now, I'm hoping Allardyce knows what he's doing.

Btw, yeh I'm Samieh!

Id be gutted if dyer left, I hope he stays!

Btw newcastle 3-0 up at half time against celtic. Martins got 1 and luque got the other 2! live on setanta sports 1 right now.

I just read that on the Newcastle site.

Harper came on 4 Butt! That's versatility for you!

Its good to see Luque get some goals, wonder if he can finally settle in.

results dont matter in pre season BUT its always nice to win - was certainly nice seeing Luque score, the lad is clearly quality - hopefully he can sort his fitness out and fight for a spot in the team.

Bit worried about injuries, Butt went off injured and so did Taylor - hopefully they aint too serious

and he played a little part in the Milner goal :19: :19:

4-1 - very surprised...thought it will be like 1-1 - lol

luque finishing is still there..but still looks miles off from a prem player.

Looks like Dyer can't resist the lure of London :( and likes the idea of playing for Spurs.

He finally seems to have gotten over his injury problems and is leaving; just when it looks like we might have got the best out of him over a longer period of time.

I wonder what these family issues are.

just an excuse - he is attracted by the flashier clubs of London

He has been at Newcastle for 8 years, he earns silly silly money yet his family remains in Ipswich? I guess its cos if his family was here he wudnt be able to chase women in the town like he does most nights - the guy is a talented footballer BUT an idiot.

Hopefully we can get a decent amount for him and then i hope he keeps getting injured

A comfortable 2-0 win at home against Juventus without a fair few first teamers

The 2nd half performance was pleasing cos we had plenty of youngsters on BUT we managed to keep a clean sheet.

Yeah the fee being quoted is £500k. He would add depth to our squad and wont be a bad squad player for that price.

our charlie barnett played 20 min or so... good player with potential and was at the hub of our youth cup winning team.. sad to see him leave if he joins you guys but he would be joining a good club. :( . hes not a right winger though.. for 125k would be a very good signing..

I didnt see enough of him to really make a judgement BUT he had a few good touches - so what his his position then?

bad journalism - i reckon..

i have a small feeling that ashley doesnt really want allardyce- hence why this 'internal review' is taking so long and rather not give him any money and why this crap is in the news..

hence this talk of Keegan

This is Big Sams response
SAM Allardyce has slammed newspaper stories suggesting he would have to sacrifice Obafemi Martins to raise transfer funds.

There were reports on Tuesday morning that the Magpies boss would have to sell the Nigerian striker, who scored 17 times last season in his maiden campaign at St. James' Park.

However, Big Sam told nufc.co.uk: "This story is complete and utter fabrication. There's nothing in it whatsoever."

Indeed, Martins told Newcastle World in an exclusive interview last week: "I am very, very happy here so I am not going anywhere."

Sam and chairman Chris Mort, meanwhile, are continuing to work hard behind the scenes in an attempt to add new faces to the Newcastle squad.

I agree about Ashley not wanting Big Sam, its not his appointment so he might feel he wont get credit for any success that he may achieve - tho it would be messed up to bring keegan back, Big Sam certainly needs to be given a chance cos as a manager he is tactically more astute than Keegan and he is a more intelligent manager

centre midfield.. Gerrard, Sissoko, Alonso, Leiva and Mascherano are probably the best central midfield in the world.. I dont think its easy for any unknown would break into this..

ALAN Smith is set to join Newcastle after United accepted a £6m deal for the striker.

The 26-year-old was today due to hold talks with manager Sam Allardyce over personal terms, with the transfer expected to go ahead this week.

Smith was also the subject of a bid from Middlesbrough, who wanted him to replace St James' Park-bound Mark Viduka, but the former Leeds striker was not keen on a move to the Riverside.

Smith now seems certain to leave United, who he joined for £7m just over three years ago. He has made 93 appearances for the Reds, scoring 12 goals.

Smith has been reluctant to leave Old Trafford, but the impending arrival of Carlos Tevez and the singings of Nani and Anderson over the summer means there is little room for a player who has struggled to make an impact on the first team since he broke his leg and dislocated his ankle against Liverpool in February last year.

The transfer is also a sign that United are optimistic they can still secure a deal to bring Tevez to the club before the August 31 transfer deadline.

no he didnt - he played as a striker at Leeds.

Just cos he loved to get stuck in Fergie assumed he could convert him into a midfielder BUT he is a rubbish midfielder and now he is a rubbish striker. Toony is spot on, Fergie has ruined the player

I would be devastated if we signed him - i really hope he picks Boro ahead of us tho one would have to be a complete nutjob to do that
