The Newcastle United Thread

I think NUFC have once again underachieved this season.

The sooner Roeder goes the better. With the squad available, a better manager would have them challenging for a UEFA place.

I agree we have underachived this season BUT i disagree regarding Roeder - i think he is a good manager and is the right man for the job at the moment.

Yes Saj our squad is decent BUT there are many defensive issues (which hopefully Roeder will rectify) and we have had bad injuries this season. I mean at times we have had 12-13 players out injured AT ONCE stretching over a 4-5 month period. The Injuries did DESTROY our season and im sure other clubs regardless of who they are would have struggled with the similar amount of injuries.

Hopefully with some signings in defence and a bit of luck on the injury front, im confident we will be challenging for a UEFA cup place next season.

GA, who do you think Roeder will bring in for next season?

Im hoping he will go for Woodgate - we badly need a Left Back, Right Back and a Centre Back.

There havnt been any consistent rumours about who he will go for in those positions so i truly havnt a clue, i just hope he does his research because our defence needs sorting once and for all.

Im not too fussed about strikers or midfield tho we have been linked with Steve Sidwell - which wont be a bad signing since he is available on a free

Owen is named in the starting lineup against Reading :27: :27: :27:

Lets hope he can get through the match without any problems :19:

Good to see micheal owen back and fit for newcastle tonite.

him and Martins could form an awesome strike pair next season!

Owen looks sharp. caught just off-side. clinical finish thou.

reading maybe could have had a penalty at other end.

I'm surprised Owen looks sharp, thought he'd need about 5-6 games to get his match-fitness sorted. But its v good news!

Who's had the better 1st half?

1st half was pretty even. Reading 1 up but newcastle have wasted some very good chances.

Very attacking formation for newcastle. Lack of holding Cm is killing them thou.

Dyer fluffed a sitter to get a point. He hit it straight at Hahnemann and no one was around the challenge him.

Michael Owens 9m get out clause does exist and it should be very worrying for toon fans.. even FFS has admitted it.. wouldnt mind him for 9m..

From bbc.co.uk/sport

Shepherd tells Owen to stay loyal

Angry Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd has told Michael Owen to show some loyalty and warned him none of the 'big four' clubs want to buy him.

Shepherd is furious after reports suggested Owen, who has played only 13 games since joining Newcastle for £17m in 2005, could leave in the summer.

"Michael has two choices: he can come out and tell our fans that he is happy here," Shepherd told the Daily Express.

"Or I tell him none of the big four are interested. Because that's the case."

A report in the Times newspaper suggested Owen could be available for less than £10m and could be a target for the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

But Shepherd went on: "These suggestions will not impress our fans after what has happened in the last couple of years.

"This report was a very thinly-disguised attempt to flog Owen from under our feet, sourced very close to the player or those who look after him. The information must have come from there, not from our club."

Owen arrived at St James' Park in 2005 but played only 11 games in his first season before breaking a bone in his foot.

He recovered in time to play at the World Cup where he suffered a serious knee injury which ruled him out of most of this season.

Shepherd said: "The loyalty this club has shown him over the last two years, when he had injury problems in his first season and had missed virtually all of this season, deserves something in return.

"He has had a really serious injury and no-one, least of all one of the biggest clubs, is likely to take a risk at this stage.

"He has to prove to everyone, himself and Newcastle United included, that he is fully recovered and not about to break down again."

He hasnt outright said it BUT it certainly sounds like a clause exists which is very worrying - methinks the clause must have been linked with europe qualification if it does exist.

Sheperd is right that Owen needs to show some loyalty - I can understand players wanting to leave to play for bigger clubs and in the champions league BUT we have gotten next to NOWT out of him in 2 years. He will go down MASSIVELY in my estimation if he left this summer

Mine too, but sadly I don't expect him to stay for longer than a couple of seasons, especially if we don't win anything.

Wonder how much of the pointless England 'B' game he'll play.

i hope he goes to one of the top 4 at the end of the season. he deserves to play for a top club and win medals

well he is at a big club, a sleeping giant, who have been asleep for some time - just think of the recognition/status the guy who turns them into a top contender will get - as good as winning medals in my book

if any toon fan think that owen will stay at newcastle for any reason other than Owen they are deluded.. however should he leave he is well within his rights as there is a clause in the first place and the person toonfans should be blaming is ffs

exactly. dont make a clause for him, if you dont want him to leave under it. ok fair enough he hasnt given nethg to newcastle but if they dont qualify for europe, its their own fault

Yeah but that is what he was brought in for and he has done nothing! He owes them a season atleast considering they probaly had to foot some of his medical bill (Geordie confirm?)

yeh it would be shepherd's fault as well.

I have a feeling Owen wouldn't have signed a contract that didn't make it easier for him to leave. Maybe he shouldn't have signed for us in the first place and continued his career on the Madrid bench.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what happens in the next few seasons.

Owen would have been at Liverpool.. It is a well known fact how much he wanted to sign for us and cried the night it did not happen.. I remember GA and the rest of the toon fans refused to accept when I said at the time he has a getout clause and could be with us again.. I do not think that is likely to happen but a fully fit Owen would be big asset to any team..

well its a shame (for him) liverpool weren't gonna spend that much money(16/17 mill+) on him.

yes that is correct - WE paid for his operations and his flight/accomdation to the US etc etc despite the fact he got injured whilst on International duty - the FA have been contributing towards his wages BUT it still doesnt change the fact we have paid him millions for only 13 games

How many goals in that time??

ofcourse it will be FF fault, he will rightly get the blame when Owen leaves BUT the guy has got millions from us over the last 2 years and we have only got 13 games out of him. If he had played a considerable amount of games and then wanted to leave i would understand and not blame him BUT this would take the biscuit.

We are not unreasonable fans, we just want atleast a season out of him - it aint too much to ask

was it freddie who reckoned newcastle's women were all s l a g s

well he owns a majority share in the club - so unless someone buys out the club we will have to make do with that fat bufoon

BIG PHIL EYES TOON

BIG Phil Scolari has emerged as a shock late rival for Sam Allardyce in the race to become the next Newcastle manager.

While Allardyce is still favourite for the job, Brazilian Scolari's agents have been in touch with the Toon in the past few days to discuss a possible move to the Premiership.

Scolari snubbed England a year ago when Sven Goran Eriksson quit. But Scolari, who is still under contract with Portugal, would match the demands being made of chairman Freddy Shepherd to make a 'sexy' appointment.

Shepherd would rather not bring in a foreigner, but the availability of a World Cup winner would give any chairman reason to reconsider. A move for Allardyce is opposed by some figures within the club although he has been the firm favourite for the post since Glenn Roeder was forced to resign last weekend.

Allardyce will wait to see if the Newcastle interest turns into a formal offer - and that he is given the right funds to turn round the Geordie outfit.

If Big Phil is interested then there is NO WAY that we should even be considering fat sam - Big Phil is MILES better than him and would be the perfect appointment.

Go on Fat Fred, do the right thing for once :19:

why would scolari want to go to newcastle?? :20: if newcastle get him, then its one of the best signings they'l ever make. however i dont think scolari would go to newcastle.

United Laugh Off Internet Video

Following the internet broadcast of a video clip containing footage of Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd, the club has issued the following response:

Anyone who has seen this video clip will immediately regard it for exactly what it is.

It's nothing more than tongue-in-cheek banter in the most light-hearted fashion that nobody could take remotely seriously or try to misinterpret.

The chairman shows just how approachable he is by having a laugh with a couple of football fans, and Geordies and Liverpool supporters are world renowned for enjoying a joke and sharing a sense of humour after all.

OMG - big phil at newcastle! i wanted the guy to take over at barca but if he ended up at the geordies - i would be v happy for them! if anyone can awaken the sleeping giant, he is the man!!

And GA u mentioned roeder was looking to set up ties in south america - well big phil would cover brazil with his vast knowledge/friends

I highly doubt Big Phil would go to Newcastle considering he he has won the world cup, took a team to the semis, and has been linked to many much bigger clubs.

Its all about challenges - whoever wins a trophy for us will achieve god like status and im sure that will appeal to managers out there.

and big phil has practically done it all on international stage, nothing really left to prove but as GA says - if he went to the toon and helped them fill their potential - he would be granted god like status by the geordies!

a 1-1 draw away to Watford for us.

Rumours of N'Zogbia leaving the stadium after being named on the bench, Owen gets injured and it was a rubbish game.

Thank god this season is over :27: :27:

I thought N'zogbia would've got the nod ahead of pattison to play on the left? Did someone forget to tell Charles that we've had our regular drama this week ;-) .............................anyway I hope he's not on his way out.

yep that is something worth celebrating! :)

True....but why doesn't he then go for a Champions League title? I am sure one of the bigger clubs (like the AC's, Barca's, United's) are more than willing to take him in.

same here, was certainly surprised that Pattison started especially out on the left (Pattison prefers playing in the centre)

I hope he doesnt leave either - he has been poor this year BUT he is still young

i was messing around lol. by the way i think wenger buys better when he doesnt spend. the only decent signing he bought for money was henry. the likes of jeffers, pennant, richard wright and even walcott to an extent have been big money flops.

whereas these bargains he gets are brilliant, the likes of anelka, fabregas, toure and eboue etc..

That young Australian Troisi scored in a game against Iran yesterday (was a youth team qualification for the Olympics I think)

Yep it was the U23 Olympic Qualifiers. He won the penalty for the second goal and he scored the 3rd goal to help them win 3-1. In his home town aswell :14: :14:

Out the options available I dont think big sam is as bad as people make it out to be. Aslong as he doesnt play the "long pass" which I dont think he will. He had rubbish players at bolton and really had no option but to play the long ball. With the crowd on his back and the the players he has, I dont think hell play his tactics.

Theres rumours of ben haim coming to newcastle, call me racist but as a pakistani muslim newcastle fan I would prefer if a jew did'nt play for newcastle.
