The Rishabh Pant thread

Played a great knock but has to become more consistent and tighten his defensive technique.

His keeping also needs a lot of improvement.

But, he should be backed ahead of Saha as he's the future.

The issue is that most people here do not understand cricket, and then Junaids taking them for a free joyride also makes matters worse.

Anyone with any semblance of cricket acumen could tell that Pant is insanely talented.
 
Insanely talented bloke. Has shades of Adam Gilchrist. Could be a better batsman than de kock. Just needs to better his wicket keeping

More consistent than who? He has only ever played tests in SENA and West Indies and already matched or surpassed legends like Laxman, Dravid, Sehwag there
 
Silly Pant had to summon his inner Afridi, if he stayed for another 10 more overs, could have won the match. Pant and Rohit easily the best players of the pull shot currently imo.
 
Always knew this thread would come back to OP. Can't trust 95 percent of Pakistan fans when it comes to rating Indian players.

He is going to provide some more stomach aches as he will get better with age and even more if he can improve his keeping.
 
what is astonishing is the power in his shots. For a 23 year old to strike fear in opposition ranks is incredible
I don’t think he can play a defensive innings as people expect . He will produce this sort of innings along with some mediocre ones. this will continue. But just because he gets out to a rash shot does not make him dumb or overhyped. You live and die by sword for some and Pant is one of them
 
He is in fact the best Indian batsman in test cricket right now...better than Kohli...kohli is overrated

Seems to be a pressure player

I won't doubt him again, he has tremendous batting talent. :kp

Now if he can improve his keeping, he would go far, and take the team to greater heights as well.
 
Rishab Pant's keeping is below par but so was Dhoni early on. Dinesh Kartik was preferred wicket keeper choice in tests in 2004-05 bur Dhoni became first choice purely due to his aggressive batting in ODIs

OF course Dhoni did improve his keeping overtime & became pretty reliable. No reason Pant cannot do better if we give him time

I am talking in terms of 100s scored. Laxman has 0 in England, Dravid has 1 in Aus. Pant already has 1 each and almost had 2 in Aus today. Pant already averages more than all of them in Aus. Even these legends struggled in these countries, yet a young 23 old is being called inconsistent?

He is a different player when he goes out there with an intent to prove a point. Needs to keep that fire alive in him always.

Pant's been brilliant, he has an underrated batting technique, he is shining against the current Aussie bowlers that are world class. If he can improve his glove work, he would have a stellar career.

Currently I am putting him above Vihari and Jadeja as a batsman. Even if he fails in the next test against Australia I will forgive him since he has already saved this match for India. Still a long way to go now. Let's see how he performs against England. :inti

I disagree. I find Pant's innings impactless. He had no pressure when he came in and when the victory was on, he got out.

Rizwan played a similar innings recently and I found it pretty useless.

These kinds of chases make heroes out of mortals, but really the only heroes are those who are there at the end when the team crosses the line.

That's not a very good logic. By that measure Karun Nair is better than the fab 4 - Sachin, Dravid , Lakshman and Ganguly as he scored a 300 in test.

Pant has undoubtedly potential in terms of clean hitting and can definitely grow as a player inspite of his inconsistencies as age is on his side. But we can't cherry pick his centuries and say that he is better than people who have done it over a decade long careers.
 
Pant is a sensational talent. Gill and Pant should not be dropped at all. These two must play 3-4 years of international cricket before Kohli retires. They are future of Indian team :inti

Apologies if I’m confused but how is saying they have similar batting skills not comparing them? I don’t think Pant has come even close to demonstrating he has the batting skills of an ATG like Gilchrist who revolutionised the game of cricket.

He is Gilly 2.0 minus keeping.

Don't let nostalgia cloud your perception.

Now Pant can fade away too but chances are high he will be like Gilly.

He already has 3 amazingggggg SENA knocks in his super short career at 23 which most batsman don't manage in their entire career.
 
Gilly was an excellent keeper who pouched some sensational catches. Pant has a long way to go to reach his level.
 
Plus Gilly was a far more terrorising bat than Pant is. He didn't hit and miss as many deliveries as Pant does.

I am just waiting to see how he performs in India, i am damn sure that he will take that 41 average to 45 or 46 once he gets regular chances in India.
Imagine the destruction he will cause on indian pitches.

The only thing he needs to do is improve his keeping vs spin and he will have a great career.

As I keep saying... He's a legend in the making.

He will be amazing in India on most tracks.

Would like to see how he plays on serious turners... That will be a challenge and I wanna see how he copes with that.

My only worry is his atrocious keeping.

He can drop matches and series behind the stumps.

And mess with bowlers' heads big time.

Thats the only thing he needs to focus on.
 
He is a decent keeper against pace to be fair.

But I am not sure about whether he has strong grasp of basics.
 
His keeping will improve. All he needs is one full home season. He shouldn’t have been dropped for the South African series in 2019, it was a dumb call.

Pant will be one of the best cricketers of the 2010 decade.

A guy like Pant works in India because he can add that X factor and others have the brain to play around him, so his innings works.

Rizwan plays in mostly hopeless situations

Pant’s good knocks have a larger impact on his team and failures can be covered while Pakistan doesn’t have the same luxury.

Also while Rizwan is technically a more orthodox bat, Pant is an X factor that can win games on his own.

His Keeping is adequate, it’s not as terrible or atrocious as we make it out.

Yes, Saha is a different level as a pure keeper but as a total package Pant is on a different level.

His keeping neeeds some maintenance work but it is at a more evolved level than a young DK,Parthiv and even Dhoni at the same age. He will be fine
 
Before criticising him, people should look at his First Class batting stats where the answer lies! There is no better Test cricket WK batsman option for India at the moment. Saha is outdated.
 
He does create tension for opposition, yesterday what he did was Sehwag like but outside Asia..

I'm hoping that improves to a manageable amount.Will never be as good as Dhoni or Saha

However a guy who can bat in 4th innings is special.Just remember all the small chases we couldnt hack overseas in recent years
 
BTW Paina dropped 2 today,and he's been playing on these tracks for life

Kohli doesn't understand that. Pant will out after one bad series.Maybe Gill too
 
Just watched highlights of the innings,its clear he was going for the win .Even at 97 he didn't think of personal milestones

Gilchrist didnt revolutionized the game of cricket. He revolutionized the way wicket keeping is perceived in modern era. He was an excellent batsman and a good wicket keeper.

Pant batting skills are as good as Gilchrist. The guy doesn't play at home, only plays outside Aisa and already averages 40 in tests with bat. Once he plays at home, he will take thay average over 45 but the problem in his case is his wicket keeping skills.

Nah buddy.

It ain't adequate.

Good keepers like Saha drop too.

But it doesn't faze bowlers cos normally they are reliable.

But people like Pant have a psychological impact on bowlers... Especially spinners.

And no matter where we play... Our spinners will have a huge role to play.

Something our team management is only realizing.

So Pant has to improve his game to the point the bowlers feel comfortable.

He can drop catches but as long as he looks reliable for most part, it's fine.

Dhoni for the longest never went for tough catches vs pacers,but was safe for ones that came straight.I'm hoping Pant can be that,safe without being spectacular

Being good enough is good enough.

Saha is a legend in keeping.

Right up there with the best. Expecting him to be a Saha is unrealistic.

Yes. He would have done that already had Indian not taken the dumb decision to drop him for the SA series at home two years back.

All he needs is one full home season. In a couple of years, he will be among the safest keepers as well.

People can bookmark this post as well.
 
He is only 23. With the natural talent he has, the guy should be playing every game. He will only get better. He is already getting tons in Australia and England which no Indian keeper has ever done so he has already made history. Granted, his keeping has issues but playing in India will improve his keeping against spin surely. He easily makes the team just as a batter.

His keeping was way better than it is now. Even against spinners. In domestic his keeping was always safe. He has regressed recently and i think it was mostly because of lots of pressure put on him

Dhoni sucked against spin initially. He is on record saying that he was afraid he would be dropped after his bad performances in a few matches against Kumble, but seniors stood up for him and asked him to be given more chances. Then of course he worked tremendously hard to improve and be the keeper he became later

At some point, the 'can' has to convert to 'does' on a regular basis. But really I am talking in the context of this innings.

You are wrong. His overall average is 40 but his away average is 36 which is not bad. It seems he loves to bat in Australia only. Here are his away averages per country :

Aus - 56
Eng - 27
West Indies - 19
NZ - 15

Lots of improvements still to be made before he can be called Gilly 2.0. :inti

It was an All time great knock.

If this doesn't deserve hype, what else would? :))

This guy was instrumental in helping us win the series last time with his handy contributions at the bottom.

He played a great knock in Oval England.

Now he has played critical knocks in MCG and a mind blowing knock in SCG.

Fully deserves the hype.

Also, in the last test in MCG....it was actually Pant's knock that gave much needed impetus to the innings. He has been the best batsman on this tour so far from India.
 
Also what is refreshing about Pant is that he's a left hander. Since Dhawan is nowhere near the test scene and is 35 in age as well, Pant - alongside Jadeja - give us a good opportunity to mix up the line-up with a left hand bat.

He has a bit of Sehwag about him - not worrying about a dropped chance and just being positive throughout. I don't know if there are any precedents of putting keepers as test openers, but if he can do it he should.

At least at the Gabba we can play Saha as keeper and Pant as a specialist batsman. Rohit can play down at #6.

If Gill and Pant can take us to 100/0 I'm all for it.

Faf's knock in Adelaide and VVS knock in Kolkata were both ATG knocks. Stokes knock was ATG too.

Pant's knock is a great one but not ATG. Had Pant survived for 4-5 overs more and then gotten out and helped his team win the game, it would have been ATG knock.

Where did you take this general opinion from? Why do you expect all of us to have the same opinion like yours? He was dropped twice in that inning. Still it was a very good inning in my opinion. I won't call it ATG knock.

Are you comparing this knock with Gilly's? Gilly scored 149* and Aus won that match. I have hardly seen Pant staying till the end and finishing the match for India in all formats. :inti

That cutoff is just an example. What I mean was that if he had survived 4-5 overs, he would have taken the target to 100 and then others would have won that game. It was a brave knock but when he got out, it's not like we were favourites, it was still even steven and then with Pujara's wicket, Australia again became favourites. But Vihari and Ash also performed.

There were four vital knocks to save this test match. Out of the four, Pant was the best but other three were very important as well.

As an example, think what Stokes did at Headingley or Faf at Adelaide, they took it till the end. But Pant's knock was exceptional too, just not at that level of those two or Laxman's level.
