Good luck kaayal, sister! :)

I'll take some inspiration from you and get over my laziness and work for my exam too!

EDIT : Behno aur bhaiyo - dua mein yaad rakhnaa! :')

This

And I'm back at school now so less time wasting now

Frustrated? Nah, I was just curious.

You're back at school and have decided to waste less time, I have my CIEs in less than a week and am wasting more time than you. :P

Correction: Kids at school memorize over 450 pages, not 200.

Also, am I the only unfortunate poster who has their final O Level exams this year? All of you are almost through with your exams and mine haven't even started, and they're going to last over a MONTH.

Pray for me people, I need it!

You need a proper word it's Ratta bazi:D in English it's mugging up and it's very popular among the pupils:P.But I hate it,it's like ruining your career and your parents money, because in professional life nobody can get any benefit after mugging up things.

Some Pupils just prefer to get good marks rather than learning anything, this sort of behaviour makes them Parhe Likhe Jahil:P

Exactly!

My mother uses the phrase parhe likhe jahil a lot. :P

Unfortunately, for most kids, this is the only way of getting grades because a lot of teachers aren't qualified to teach the levels they do.

Why don't you think to do Intermediate,I think if you've to study in Pakistan in future then doing Inter should be your priority.

Lol@ parhe likhe jahil :D and yeah teachers do prefer to write and learn word by word even if the child doesn't know what in the world he is studying..

Not Intermediate, the system freaks me out. I can't learn book after book of any subject. Plus, people tell me the percentage deduction thing still happens.

Well, there, all I'll probably have to do is listen to the teacher and read around. And as far as I know, there aren't any set textbooks for A levels, just reference books.

If you go to college in Pakistan, it's an entirely different story. You go to coaching centers because no one bothers to go to college, students and teachers alike. You get notes which are like, really, really long and you have to learn by heart, plus the books are a gazillion years old. Absolutely outdated.

Not to mention the stories I've heard when it comes to paper checking here. I'd much rather trust a person in England with my exam than one in Pakistan. No offense, anyone.

You are not sheer wrong. We have to go to coaching centers as well, but this is not the general state of colleges all over Pakistan, there are good colleges too.The college where I am going currently,is good in teaching but they don't take tests, that's the problem because there are students who don't learn until they are compelled to learn.Books, some of them are very old,but these include English and Urdu books, and it doesn't matter to learn these book of old additions. If you talk about the science subjects, the books are completely up to date.

And the students who don't get good marks defend themselves by saying that their papers have been bungled,if there is done strict checking,it happens with all students not with a single student,IMO..I should be little careful lest this sort of checking should happen with me:P

Your system is the Federal Board, right? The Karachi/Sindh Board is utterly pathetic. The books you have now are the same ones my aunts and uncles used all those years ago.

I wouldn't

Do you study Urdu in an Indian School or you are talking about the time when you were in Pakistan?

In Pakistan,Urdu is the least scoring subject, one has to write a loooooot and then he/she gets 70-75 out of 100,and only the toppers cross the sum of 80.

I am accounting for both - my time in Pakistan and UAE. I didn't really face a tough situation regarding Urdu in Pakistan because I only studied till grade 2 there.

It is fairly easy to get good marks in Urdu here.

Of course dude. Just because we're living in Pakistan doesn't mean we're not living in 2014. :P

Actually, I meant that do they have it in most of the schools. They should have it.

A lot of information can be given to students using internet. Also, the notes can be provided through MS Word, which saves you from the dirty handwriting of your teacher.:P

Mine start from 19th May to 24th June, over a month :(

I wouldn't

Join the club. :P

Why wouldn't you trust them? At least I know they know what they're doing. But the British Council is just... :/

Yeah, I know what you meant.

We use projectors in my school a lot, we get to watch a lot of presentations and all that seems to be of no help and are boring. Gives you a lot of time to talk. :P

And all the notes I get are printed, or I write them myself.

Yh I think i heard about that at least you got another attempt at it :p. Last year my first Economics paper I was 1 mark off an A, got my paper back showed my teacher one question, he looked at the mark scheme and said I had got it right even though i got marked 0/2 for the question, sent it for a remark and it came back unchanged . They've also robbed me in Maths.

Got a cricket match today, was thinking of bowling Fast/mediums for first two overs then leg-spin for the next two. Are you allowed to do that in Cricket?

Ooh, that must've hurt! :P That's why you don't trust them.

As for the second attempt, no one needed it. We got these really easy Pak Studies papers initially and the Islamiyat ones were way easier than expected too. The next exams we got were plain crap. Made no sense at all and they took our grades down with them. :po:

Yup, ohh that must of been peak, did the papers get leaked? It happned with Edexcel in Maths, the paper got leaked and people in other countries + certain schools did it, but majority of the schools had to do it again (Maths C3), apparently the paper was soo hard that some stuff weren't on the syllabus. Lots of schools complained as well

I bet, cuz in my lingo, "security breach" is code for "we messed up, the exams leaked, now you pay". They never revealed the details.

I wrote to them a lot, made me feel somewhat better. Said a lot of good stuff. :D :P

Good.

Our presentations are either made by the teachers or by the students themselves.

We also have a day on which we have to bring an electronic device.

Mine is Lahore board.

Pakistan_Legend,i think you've really underestimated Pakistan:P

We have projectors in our institutes.:P and the teachers send us notes either by email or they give us in black and white.

Initially, I was going to choose French because I wanted to learn a new language but then I didn't. It was a masterstroke from my side as I found out that it was pretty tough. I would be overloaded as we have to learn Arabic as well. I didn't have a clue about both the languages earlier.

Urdu is the easiest of all the second languages. I bash all the others.:hafeez2

Salam,

Agreed with 96notout. I'd rather trust a drunk britisher to check my paper WITH proper marking methods (THE scheme =p) rather than bunch of old professors preferring quantity over quality (as is said about matric/inter).

Medical colleges are good though. Although too many private ones have popped up.

NUST AND GIKI are really good for engineering as well and then you have LUMS. :afridi

thats what i mean, it kills the quality and also means graduates will find it hard to get a job in Pakistani and even more so out of Pakistan. It's just a cheap money grab.

I have relatives in England and Australia who all go to these colleges when dont get entry in the country they live in. All have ended up nowhere

lol being curious is telling people to get a life? :))
And I have life dependent exams in 2 weeks so technically I shouldn't be on PP at all:msd

Don't get fooled into thinking that you'd trust a british marker. They'll mark you down if you wrote DNA instead of deoxyribonucleic acid lol. They're way too harsh

Woww! Thanks for sharing, that is very rightly said!

What are you studying?

Graduation - B.A Hons, I guess. International relations and political science. I'll start 3rd year in september :)

What about you?

O Levels. It's driving me crazy, God knows what I'm gonna do in A levels.

O levels awwww :'D
I gave my O levels back in 2009-10.
What subjects?

And speaking from personal experience, I understand what you mean.. Having given grade 9 finals, grade 10 finals, send ups, mocks - I was practically sick and tired of my O level books. I felt like puking especially when I opened up Business studies :/

My advice would be to take it easy. Do not over prepare, I feel it just adds frigidity to your thought process. A little creativity wont hurt, ever.. But do hang in there - just one more month to go before freedom! :)

I know someone who got 3 papers rechecked. Borderline Bs. They were all changed to As - and the mistake?

Clerical error during counting. Yes, you read that right. They miscalculated her marks! Cant forget her face when she ran to school, jumping and screaming about her grade changes ... :)

Medical colleges are good though. Although too many private ones have popped up.

NUST AND GIKI are really good for engineering as well and then you have LUMS. :afridi

The biggest mistake of my life was not applying for LUMS.. But in hindsight, I think whatever happened, happened for the best. And was most probably inevitable.

But undoubtedly, we have some solid institutions. NUST Islamabad was recently ranked as the best emerging university in the world in engineering..

GIKI?Is it in Swabi?

There are number of good medical colleges in Pakistan,K.E,Fatima Jinnah and Allama Iqbal are few of them.

There are good very good universities of arts as well here,NCA is one of them, which is one of the top universities in Asia.

I wasn't telling you to get a life, I was talking to someone else.

I was wondering why you said I'm frustrated.

2 weeks? That's a lifetime! I have exams in 5 days, beat that. :P

You think Pakistani examiners are better? They take away points for not having good handwriting.

I have those pre-med subjects. Boring as hell.

Tell me about taking exams. I've actually spent almost half of my time in O levels taking exams, I've gotten so used to them that I stopped caring about them, even my finals.

I'm taking things very easy, way easier than I should be. God help me.

You study in N. America? What country, if you don't mind?

Oho, I don't mind, to be very honest - but PP can be a pretty tight knit community.. which is why I'll hold off answering that question (just dont be offended, or anything! :) )

Let's just say its very cold, here :yk2

Pre-med is tougher than Commerce-based subjects (that I had).. Anyhow, about exams, all I can say is that the time is gone for learning (for most part) - now its all about perfecting your application. I say ditch the books and master those past papers, as many as you can.

For my A level accounting (God, how I hated that subject) - our book contained pastpapers from the 1980s, and we pretty much did them all. 2 weeks before the exam, my teacher emailed us some 20 extra practice questions from ACCA exams. Needless to say, majority of the class aced it (even though Accounting is one of the toughest subjects to write in A levels - and the rumours are true: Accounts paper 4 is at times, technically incorrect.. so there).

But do allow yourself some breathing room. I'm not sure if it works for everyone, but I personally require some down time before an exam to gather my senses about me. Over-preparation has let me down more times than I'd like to say (in fact, Pak Studies [specifically Geography] was one instance where I messed up even though I knew everything).. The aim of the game is to assure yourself you know everything (which you probably do) and that you can handle anything thats thrown at you.

The fact that you've taken so many exams that you feel used to it - I think thats great. Completely puts off exam pressure, and helps dealing with nerves.

As for when you are practically sitting in the hall, taking your exam - and you feel tired and exhausted in the middle (like I did today's exam, in the middle of my 21-page marathon) - just buck yourself up immediately. Remind yourself you've toiled so hard for this moment, and it's all under control - you will not let it slip away like that. Time management is everything in O/A levels - you get that right, you're practically in the B+ category..

Aw man. Now I miss my O/A level days.... :'D

Wow I feel old now, very much remember the stress of exams. And the feeling that as soon as I sat at the desk I used to forget everything and thinking oh crap what am I going to do now!

I would say enjoy it as nothing beats the relief and holidays after exams.

There is some weird charm about taking exams, I can't explain it - but it is something that one misses once their done with that part of their life :)

Yeah if it was up to me I would opt to be a student for life. Things are much more chilled out.

You can always return for your masters/PhD ...

I sometimes wonder about doing a PhD, just for the heck of it. My field (Poli-Sci/IR) is such that you can hardly get by with a Masters.. I will do Masters for sure..... but PhD?

I often question my sanity.

InshAllaaah! :)

Not daily though.. or maybe just - I don't know.. I'm just very sentimental about my food :uakmal

You wont regret it :ahmed
