The UFC/MMA Thread

The 1st minute of the fight - its just a dance off. But still interesting to watch. Not a single shot landed so far. Crowd booing a bit.

Crowd actively booing the fighters. But I love it. They both are being very cautious. How do you score this? Romero won it?

Holy crap. Romero threatened to end the fight right there. Izzy is clearly respectful of Romero's explosive power.

What a slow paced fight in terms of the number of strikes - pales into comparison with what we saw earlier in the other co-main fight.

What was that all about in the end. Definitely an underwhelming title fight. It felt that they both were kinda scared of each other's power and skill set.

I mean Izzy had leg strikes and Romero had better strikes I suppose.

Man even the post fight interviews are weird.

Possibly the worst PPV main fight I've watched in terms of lack of intensity and action. But it was just a good defensive fight.

Nnganu vs Derrick Lewis in ufc 226 was pretty bad too.

Yoel blaming izzy for not engaging was ridiculous as he was barely engaging either.

If I had paid for this ppv event I'd be so disappointed if not for the amazing joanna vs weilli fight.

All I have to say is I would have been extremely angry for the money I spent - if not for the Zhang vs Joanna fight. That one fight deserved every single dollar I spent for the PPV.

Literally the first two minutes of that fight.

As always the women carrying this sport on their backs only fight I tuned into don't really fancy the lands rolling on the floor, tremendous action form the ladies probably was the best I have seen from them and I scored it a draw although was leaning more towards Joanna; however lets be honest they were never going to give her the W if it went to the cards, at least the UFC judges expertly score a home cooking decision and Zhang is the future / Dink land is a bigger market to compared to Poland. Technically Joanna was superior and she systematically out-classed Zhang who deserves credit for her toughness, chin, determination and was very heavy handed, eventually she will be beat by a fighter who is superior technically unless she makes some major improvements to her overall game.

Let us serenade the GOAT of the straw-weight division and arguably the best ever P4P:

I am surprised that Fight Night 170 is even happening today. Just turned on ESPN + and yes this is happening right now.

I guess that is because this event is taking place in Brazil.

Ribas and Markos - these two female fighters are engaged in an intense fight as I am typing this.

I see plenty of empty seats in the arena - I wonder if this is because the fans are actually not allowed or since these are still prelims - crowd haven't showed up yet.

Okay just confirmed that this Fight Night is being held without fans given the restrictions imposed by the local government in light of the corona virus.

It's funny how the announcer is making his announcements with the same passion as if the crowd is in the arena. That's professionalism for you. His announcements are being met with deafening silence. It feels so weird to watch these fights like this.

Damn Renato got the submission within the first few seconds. Damir taps. Renato was for some reason going after Damir after the victory.

Oh wow, Burns TKO's Maia. Left hook flattened Maia and then Burns raises his hands thinking he knocked out Maia but once he realized Maia is still looking at him - he rained some additional punches at which point the ref intervened to stop the fight.

Burns recovered quickly to deliver that deadly left hook.

UFC president Dana White says he is close to securing a private island to continue hosting fights during the coronavirus crisis.

White says UFC 249 will go ahead on 18 April at an undisclosed location.

The organisation was forced to postpone three events in recent months, but White says the calendar will resume for international fights this month.

"As of April 18, the UFC is back up and running," White told the American entertainment news website TMZ.

He said he is "a day or two" away from finding a location to start hosting fights.

With countries tightening travel restrictions and borders, White plans to use a private island to fly in fighters who otherwise would not be able to get into the United States.

Lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was due to take on Tony Ferguson in New York at UFC 249 but, with Nurmagomedov in quarantine in Russia, White confirmed that Justin Gaethje will replace him.

White said the UFC will be "pumping out fights every week" but fighters will be regularly tested for coronavirus and there will be no fans at the events.

"We're going to make sure that athletes, referees, my production people, that everybody there is going to be healthy before, during and after the fights," he said.

White also reportedly revealed the rest of the card for UFC 249, which includes bouts between Rose Namajunas against Jessica Andrade and Francis Ngannou versus Jairzinho Rozenstruik.

UFC president Dana White says he was told to "stand down" from holding UFC 249 on 18 April, with the event now postponed.

Earlier this week, White said he was close to securing a private island to continue hosting fights during the coronavirus crisis.

White says the "powers that be" at pay-per-view broadcast partner ESPN and parent company Disney intervened.

"This whole thing has been a battle since day one," White told ESPN.

"Today we got a call from the highest level you can go at Disney and the highest level at ESPN.

"The powers that be there asked me to stand down and not do this event next Saturday."

In a statement, the UFC said: "While the organisation was fully prepared to proceed with UFC 249, ESPN has requested the postponement of the event and subsequent bouts until further notice in light of the Covid-19 pandemic."

The announcement came hours after former UFC strawweight champion Rose Namajunas' withdrew from the co-main event at UFC 249 after two family deaths related to coronavirus.

'Fight island's going to happen'
UFC 249 was originally due to take place in Brooklyn with a long-awaited fight between Russia's Khabib Nurmagomedov and American Tony Ferguson as the main event, but the venue was ruled out before lightweight champion Nurmagomedov withdrew because of travel restrictions.

White replaced him with the USA's Justin Gaethje and arranged for a behind-closed-doors event to take place at the Tachi Palace casino, on tribal land in California, allowing him to bypass the guidelines for staging events which applied to the rest of the state.

"Tachi Palace in California, the Indian reservation, has had our back this whole time, has stood their ground and was willing to do this fight. And let me tell you this: when the world gets back to normal, California, that [fight] will be at Tachi Palace," added White.

White also said he was close to securing a private island to host international fights during the pandemic and insisted those plans remain in place, despite cancelling UFC 249.

"Fight island's going to happen," he said. "All the infrastructure is being built right now and getting put in place. As we get closer to that, then I'll start figuring out booking fights and getting guys ready.

"Plus, I can ship guys over earlier and they can start training on the island. You're looking at a month. It's all coming together."

(Reuters) - The main event of Saturday’s UFC 249 card in Florida is billed as being for the interim lightweight title but Tony Ferguson says he should be considered the real champion if he beats opponent Justin Gaethje.

Former collegiate wrestler Ferguson, coming into the bout on a 12-fight win streak, was supposed to fight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov in Brooklyn on April 18 but that was postponed due to the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The unbeaten Nurmagomedov, who has returned to Russia, had previously been booked to fight Ferguson on another four occasions but each bout was cancelled because of health or fitness issues.

Ferguson said the Dagestan native and Irish fighter Conor McGregor “both need to retire”.

“The only two real men out there are going to be me and Justin Gaethje,” he told reporters ahead of Saturday’s bout at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville.

Ferguson said UFC 249, which is taking place with stringent testing procedures and no fans in attendance due to the COVID-19 pandemic, could reach a sports-starved audience that may not otherwise tune in to a mixed martial arts event.

“Right now, there’s no Olympics, there’s no Wimbledon, there’s no NBA Draft, there’s no NFL Draft, there’s no tennis, there’s no soccer, hockey, there’s no baseball,” he added.

“This is what we bring to the table ... and we’re going to do our best and we’re going to keep sports alive and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Nurmagomedov is reportedly set to face the winner of Saturday’s fight, while also lurking in the wings is former two-weight title-holder McGregor, who made a return to winning ways with a swift TKO of Donald Cerrone in January.

Ferguson’s run of 12 straight wins is a UFC lightweight record, and having already held the interim belt after beating Kevin Lee in 2017 before being stripped due to an injury, the Californian now feels his time has come.

“This is not for an interim title,” he said. “This is for the real championship.”

Ferguson is a great fighter, but he needs to shut up about Khabib or Conor. He will have his hands full with Justin Gaethje, not a foregone conclusion by any means.

Incidentally, I am surprised this card is going ahead. Is it going to be fought in a closed stadium with no fans?

Jacare Souza has tested positive for Covid-19 and is out of Saturday's controversial UFC 249 event - the first of three in seven days in Florida.

Souza, 40, was due to fight Uriah Hall in Jacksonville on a card topped by Tony Ferguson's bout with fellow American Justin Gaethje.

But the Brazilian middleweight and his two cornermen returned positive tests.

UFC president Dana White has faced criticism for staging a show during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

White, 50, said putting the event on was the "hardest thing he's ever tried to do", while boxing promoter Bob Arum has accused his fellow American of "cowboy behaviour".

The UFC said Souza and his cornermen were asymptomatic and left the host hotel to self-isolate, where they will be monitored remotely by a medical team.

"From their arrival earlier in the week until their departure today, Souza and his cornermen followed UFC health and safety protocols, including practicing social distancing, wearing personnel protective equipment, and self-isolating whenever possible," a UFC statement read.

"There have been no other positive Covid-19 tests reported from the remaining athletes participating in UFC 249. The response to this development is indicative of the effectiveness of the health and safety measures UFC has put in place for this event."

Hall, who will now not compete, tweeted Souza: "Brother I know it sucks. I'm sorry you have to go through this I am beyond devastated for the missed opportunity. I wish you nothing but recovery for you and your family."
