The Wrestling Discussion Thread

I just rewatched the highlights of the men EC match and the subsequent ATG heel turn of Cena. Boy does it still feel surreal.
I think Cena has a lot of creative control in terms of picking his opponents during his farewell tour.
After Punk I think it's likely going to be Cena vs Punk vs Randy and afterwards it would be Cena vs AJ and then Cena vs Roman.
How awesome it would be if somehow WWE manages to get Daniel Bryan and Edge from AEW for 1 match each against John. I doubt it would happen but Edge and Cena both would certainly want it.
Face Edge vs Heel Cena would be soooooo great.
If it were upto Triple H, he would have been booking Cena against Logan Paul, Jey Uso, Hayes and end it with Seth.

Good main event but the whole Samoan line story is getting way too much.

I’m all for recruiting the best talent, and if the best talent is Samoan. All good.

But reducing all of them to this tribal cultural bloodline arc that’s been going on for years is soooo lazy.

At this point they are all just clones of one another the way they are written with Jacob being the only one with his own persona.

Make them their own person.

Main event was solid, was hoping Seth would lose the briefcase honestly.

Tama Tonga and Tonga Loa are definitely not among the best wrestlers in the world. Not sure about Hikuleo or JC Matteo either.
Only Jacob Fatu and Solo are the ones with distinct personality. Zilla Fatu will be the next signing probably.

This was Cena's best in ring work since comeback. His match with Randy was also great but Randy carried the match then.

It was a great match, the atmosphere was electric, I don’t think Saudis have been this excited for a big match before, other than the infamous Taker/Berg match. Cena/Punk could wrestle in their sleep, they have instant chemistry without all the bells & whistles, strong argument that Punk is Cena’s greatest rival imo. If this was their last match, I an slightly disappointed by the overbooking at the end, but other then that I am glad we got to experience them wrestling one last time; it’s as good as we could hope for when it comes to 4/10’s booking style.

The Cringe Lord most likely will be involved in the title picture at SS; it seems as though they are going to have him face Punk? That’s one way to try and salvage this failed experiment with the faction, Punk is like an insurance policy in that regard.

Ripley & Rodriguez was a great street fight to, the latter really should have gone over, she had star written all over the moment she made her debut; I wonder if H is aware that she was in Vinces good books…..

I was just thinking the other day how effective Stone Cold was during the anniversary of his infamous 3:16 promo; he literally had something like 1.5 mins and every word mattered & his delivery was so raw & punchy. It was a perfect example that you don’t need to spend minutes which feel like hours during your segments, especially when you don’t have the natural ability to do so.

However, I felt this promo from Cody was a very cool nod to the Austin promo and damn effective, I think it’s one of his best segments ever and the intensity was fantastic:

It would be a shame if this really is the last few months for Cena. He's doing a hell of a job as heel.

Anyone expecting a U-turn on retirement? :afridi

I feel like he will transition back to a babyface by the end of the year, will be interesting to see what they do at SummerSlam because there will be serious jeopardy for once and title changes are not uncommon.

How strong are Wrestling women.
What if Rhea Ripley goes against Virat Kohli for real.

I can handle Liv Morgan, no problem.

I am pretty sure Rhea would do to Virat what Stephanie McMahon does to Triple H every night :rizwan

But Liv Morgan would poison you afterwards :misbah

Sorry bro, but the only thing I saw here was the menacing look on Orton's face as Cody uttered those patronizing words directed at him. The seeds have been planted. That Orton turn on Cody gonna be something else.

The best thing Bron can do is keep killing it in his matches like he did against Penta this week, what a match; unfortunately the backstage skits and everything to do with this lanju panju faction is neutralising his character.
Everybody knows what they will do. You can predict Triple H's mechanical booking a year out. It will be the same Batista-Triple H storyline, but the problem is that it will probably take an eternity to materialize like everything else Triple H does. Who knows what damage that will do to Bron? Who honestly just needs to have a rocket strapped to his back. I don't think there is any doubt that he will be the next Roman Reigns.

Yeah they are teasing a turn or maybe possible involvement at SS - I don’t know how much I am to read into it, it can be one of those easter eggs from the great Trips Spielberg’s mind which everyone is overlooking. Regardless, I thought Cody cut one hell of a promo in any case and it was a great match. An Orton turn is unnecessary at this point, they’ve not got even a 1/4 out of his popularity currently as a face.

I think a big chunk of them are TK paid burner accounts on X; the vengeful ex has never quiet recovered from that break-up
When I think of TK and CM Punk, I think of this meme:

92589be1a397f25ecb63cf6e5d46b98e.jpg

If TK could go back in time and stop all of that stuff from happening he probably would. Because at the end of the day, the guy was basically a CM Punk mark. That's the one guy he wanted in AEW from day one. Before clowns like the Bucks or Page. But Tony was a weak personality whose inaction and inability to rein in his unprofessional EVPs and their friends, made him pay the ultimate price in-terms of his reputation getting damaged and his top star leaving.

I am sure it fills him with sadness that he is not friends with Punk anymore.

But I don't think he is paying people to bad mouth Punk specifically. The AEW fanbase is toxic enough to do that on their own.

It's a shame Christian is intent on getting over this pipsqueak and this faction. He has so much upside as a top heel. Probably because he is actually a heel rather than whatever the f**k Moxley is trying to be.

He’s just too loyal to the game, I wish Christain was a bit selfish. He deserves a long run with the AEW world title & pushed to the moon, cashing in on the star power around you will benefit others in the long term; some of these wrestlers suffer from imposter syndrome.

I thought the finish was a bit anti-climactic. Kinda came outta nowhere and I feel like it caught the crowd off guard too. But overall, it was a very solid match. That said, I think they were holding back. They can easily top this match.

I am not sure bro because of the way things ended and how he chose to release the footage as well etc to how he handled matters in general. I do think he was a big fan of Punk; but in TK’s eyes who is a big money mark, it was a case of the ‘fan’ not the boss mind you, meeting his hero in person and unfortunately, the wrestling business is not all sunshine and rainbows when you get in it for the business and CM Punk is a business man, one of his best traits actually and TK was just the highest bidder at the time, and his lack of professionalism cost him his biggest asset. The way I’ve seen TK behave like a man-child, I have no doubt he has a few shills posting on his behalf, I think the same although to a lesser extent for Trips during the post pay for a blue tick era.

You could be right. Just because of his decision to release the All In footage. But part of me also thinks that a big reason for that was The Young Bucks getting in his ear and getting him to do that after Punk buried them all in that interview. Tony was basically made to look like a complete incompetent fool (which he is), which is something that can get to you even if you're a weak personality he is. On the surface he doesn't seem like the type of guy who would hold grudges just because of what a big wrestling fan he is. But then again I could be wrong. That said, I have no doubt that the vast majority of the AEW fanbase are doing the Punk bashing out willingly and enthusiastically.

It will come. That much is certain. No idea when though. TBH I would prefer to see it when Cody is champion.

Yes I had the same feelings. The interference was just too much and got farcical at one point. If you take that part out this was easily Cena's best match since maybe that Roman Reigns match at SummerSlam from a few years back. It was very deliberately paced and that's what made it work. These two also happen to have amazing chemistry together which was a big plus.

Not a fan of this whole Bloodline spin-off but TBH they needed to throw Solo a bone. It was kinda laughable how he was being presented as this big bad heel who is the leader of this faction, eventhough he basically just loses and loses. He needed a big win and he needed the US Championship too. I don't expect him to have a long run, but yeah, I agree with you that its still very hard to take any of these guys seriously.

They should’ve paid homage to his name and let him do it solo :asif

He should’ve done it using heel tricks and show he can win without a stable’s help constantly- like Cena.

Also the legend Tanga Loa returns, can’t wait for him to dethrone Cena at the end of the year

Cringe king is just like his dad h who had to force himself into ever main event story just to try and get some limelight. Now h living vicariously through Seth

Didn’t need this bum with the briefcase

Imagine Drew or someone else with the briefcase, would’ve been way more exciting

Even now a Drew and Cena match would be great but with the time doofus has already wasted idk how they build it in 6 months

Sorry but I couldn't watch this match. Rhea in that BDSM/gimp outfit was too distracting and honestly I blame the Saudis. First off, do these people seriously think that a woman in a tight, full-body suit is somehow better than a woman in wrestling in her ring gear? It's actually far worse because you focus on the body even more.

Secondly, if you think women dressing up like that is an affront to your cultural values then don't have women's matches on your show. You are essentially paying WWE a fortune, you think they wouldn't remove women's matches from the card if you asked them to?

Saudis want to present themselves as modern and 'with the times', all while having some pretty backward ideas about alot of things, including women. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

there are very few people in pro wrestling who can be in a promo with Punk and not get outshone or get their persona completely overshadowed.

tonight showed LA Knight is one of them. He has the same aura. Unlike many tryhards that king tryhard doofus himself was one of and now is trying to push these tryhards on us to no avail.

I have faith the fans will not give up on him. And history has shown that when the fans don't give up on someone the company eventually has no choice but to do something. Bryan and Punk are probably the best examples but there are others too like Kofi, Dolph & Zack Ryder (to an extent).

Pumped to see this segment though...

I was thinking the same, during the pre-show or something I saw Rhea in another full body suit and did the Cody Rhodes WOAAH, bah gawd. It actually is way more immodest this way, though I would find it amusing if they fought in a full on Niqab or something lol Where is my gyal Raisha Saeed from the deserts of Syria :yk2 she been waiting to collect this Saudi check her whole life. I did like the match but you do highlight how important the outfits are, there should have come up with something a bit more creative to separate the two, especially with the colour, in the UAE they wore the T-Shirts which was boring but it worked better.

Saudis are the biggest hypocrites on Earth; did you also read about all the Saudi men who got their behinds set on fire because Punk was interacting with some women; there was nothing sinister about it, Punk was earnest & respectful with the whole thing and it was a great moment in a weird way.

This feud put Cody over like a million bucks. Looking back, he needed to go through the beast to truly earn the right to finish his story. When Vince's booking delivered, the result was always pure money. We saw much less of that in his later years, but this was definitely one of those occasions.

He just knew how to create stars and when the path before him is defined, he will go all the way. Vince went to Cody’s house to sign him as well. I think all these moments are more important then we realise because if Vince didn’t push Cody the way he did, I am not convinced H would have done the same; be it his incompetence or insecurity.

They gave Drew the Punk feud to resign & I’d have done the same, I get to work with a legend who I know will bring out my best creatively and in the ring, and you do it on the WWE platform, it was the best feud of the year and they had the best matches; unfortunately, since then, H has exploited Drew. Has never been his fan & has a grudge against anyone who Vince saw as $$$$. Vince saw a spot for Seth but never at the franchise player and the thing is, Vince gave Seth the opportunities but he never really took the ball and that’s on him. No wrestler has had more momentum then Drew, and they have refused to capitalise on it, H would actually job him out but this is one he wouldn’t get away with so easily and Drew’s career is in limbo all of a sudden.

Drew is the kind of guy you can utilise to change the wrestling business, but instead they keep investing in that turd.

Tutti recognises tutti.

I loved the league of nations man 😭😭 And Wade Barett should one million percent have been a world champion.

When I saw this, I was thinking yooo, Shawn is ready to go man, he got into insane shape for this like he was going to have a match:

What year was this even, we missed out on so many HBK dream matches 🙃 But at least he retired at his peak and went out on top and didn’t really come back well past his sell by date & torture us for years, but if anyone could have had a successful stint, it would have been him.

You're right on the money. It was a nice moment, and it seems like they were telling him they "appreciate it", not sure if they were referring to him coming there or apologizing. But apparently Saudi men have lost it on Twitter. Saudis are not only some of the biggest hypocrites but also some of the most deeply racist and elitist people you will ever come across.

Btw I do find it funny that Punk managed to come in contact with what seemed like the only two women in the whole crowd :afridi1 and now these poor women are being targeted for shaking hands with him. Just goes to show how backward Saudi Arabia is as a country, despite all their chest-thumping about how 'modern' they are.

Best match from the last 10 years along with Orton/Edge:

Rarely do wrestling matches make grown men tear up, but this was it. This match should have set the tone for what the AEW brand should have been @RedwoodOriginal, like a modern throwback to the RA era.
This match and this PPV showed the potential of what AEW could be. A true smorgasbord of wrestling that could bring a number of different styles of wrestling to the table. Then Tony allowed it to be hijacked by the Buckaroos and their PWG clique, and the rest as they say, is history.

Cody had a mixed run in AEW. It definitely had its highs and lows, but one thing I’ll always respect is that the brand of pro wrestling he tried to promote is what pro wrestling is, and should be. And unlike the Bucks who didn't know d!ck about what it meant to be an EVP, Cody actually tried to be an executive. Guys like MJF, Darby Allin, Ricky Starks and Eddie Kingston would likely have never reached AEW if it wasn't for Cody. He had a direct hand in bringing all of them to AEW.

Still I am glad that his AEW run showed WWE what he was capable of, as a leader and a top guy, and it ended up being the biggest reason for him finding his way back to where he always belonged.

As for this match, you summed it up better than I could.

It was a great idea but I thought it was ruined a bit by essentially making them Triple H and The Authority's henchmen.

I preferred the original idea that Paul Heyman came up with in the WWE '12 video-game, which they likely copied. And that idea was basically an all-European faction (Barrett, Sheamus, Drew, Regal) lead by Wade Barrett. All of them are eventually champions and they even bring back the European Championship.

Speaking of Barrett though, he's another one of those who should have been World Champion. Checked every box from promos, to the look, to in-ring ability. You can't tell me with a straight face that Sheamus, who has basically been doing the same thing for the last decade is any better than him. And look at all the success he has had. Once again I will blame Vince for not pulling the trigger on him when he was initially booked to beat Randy Orton for the WWE Championship.

The funniest thing I read about that was Pretzel brain Meltzer saying Punk apologizing on that kick off was a work.
That guy needs to have his twitter account banned for the stupid bs he vomits and his 2000 fans who make a gospel out of it.

Speaking of the League of Nations, Rusev v Sheamus on RAW was a bloody good, hard-hitting match

Meltzer's brain has basically turned to mush at this point. He will say anything to appease his subscriber base. Which is mostly AEW fans and niche wrestling fans

Why the hell is Goldy not showing up on RAW? Is he scared of getting a stroke walking to the ring?

Gunther needs to beat the snot out of him.

he says he writes negative things about aew only in WON newsletter cause it is a paid subscription. man that guy is the kanye west of pro wrestling.

Sheamus has become a very reliable wrestler. There is rarely ever a bad match from him in last 2 3 years. And thankfully he is not being used to squash cruiserweights now only.

I think & others may have mentioned this to, that the goal for Cody was always coming back to WWE, but as a guy who is the franchise player, for every move he made outside the WWE, it was like he was auditioning / preparing to replace Cena / Reigns, he always advocated for the role even through his lows, but it wasn’t the right timing. Vince doesn’t follow anything other then WWE but I am certain he kept an eye on all the moves Cody was making.

What a beautiful match and I’m happy Dustin got to have that moment to, he’s a first ballot HOF’er who doesn’t get enough credit for all his work since the late 1990’s, he was another pioneer during the shift in the wrestling industry.

Sheamus & Wade always killed it in the ring, they went all out every time against each other. I don’t know what it was about Barett that he didn’t like other than the injuries.

AJ should get a title run, AJ V Gunther would be epic and can generate lots of $$$$ for a year long storyline.

Same with LA Knight and Rollins with Punk getting in the mix to make a threesome fiesta all year long.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I enjoyed that, made me wonder if Russev had any matches like that in AEW
Rusev had an incredible run in AEW as TNT Champion. He was having great matches and he was booked like a proper monster. I think things started going downhill for him once they took the belt off him and he allegedly flat out refused to do jobs, or atleast to the people Tony was asking him to lose to.

AJ should get a title run, AJ V Gunther would be epic and can generate lots of $$$$ for a year long storyline.

Same with LA Knight and Rollins with Punk getting in the mix to make a threesome fiesta all year long.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
He should. But Triple H is too dumb to see what's Infront of his eyes. He'd rather book AJ as a feckless midcarder who never wins any meaningful matches

Yes good point. He always presented himself like a top guy (barring the neck tattoo lol). Even in AEW. In wrestling, perception is reality and I don't think enough wrestlers recognize this

Triple H ego will never let him put AJ over again and in the main title picture, Vince and Shane were the only reason why AJ got hired and then pushed.

Imagine you have someone with the same skills of Shawn and active and you are using him in your mid-card and pushing a has been Rollins to main event after countless fails.

I don’t blame him tbh, imagine having to put over pockets

The disrespect to AJ by wwe is insane.

Trying to make age part of his gimmick with mysterio with glasses and all

While that idiot triple H tried to come off as a young buck at this same age, while being 50x inferior in every way… sad.

I don’t mind that as AJ has a comedic side to him and range which is rarely exploited, I actually advocated for the Mysterio Jnr vs AJ match at WM, because that dork Logan didn’t deserve the match. If they did the match at WM previously, I was fine with that and am not going to be too disappointed about this SS affair.

However, I was on board with the idea of AJ giving someone the spotlight at WM (I don’t think he needs to job to achieve that), but we are in July now, and my expectation would be that AJ is involved in a high profile feud or something with bigger world championship stakes.

But is this what he is now to them? A glorified job guy?

Arguably the greatest wrestler of the 21st century and we are not far removed from how Ric Flair was treated by Eric Biscoff in the late 90’s, difference here though is that Ric seemed to care, yes AJ got a few years left and Ric is Ric, but this is too much to bear.

I will never forgive 4/10 H.

TBH I thought that segment was pretty funny :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

It seems the perception with alot of guys is that this is just a place to pass the time time till we get go back to the big leagues again. I don't think alot of them respect Tony Khan or even take him seriously. Plus, the way he handled the Andrade/Sammy or the Kingston/Sammy situation showed that he's not really going to put his foot down either.

I doubt Rusev would have even thought about doing the same with Vince.

Somebody in YouTube comments called him something like Buttcracko Grande 💀

Speaking of Americano, sad to hear Chad got injured. But int to see Ludwig as Americano.
Ludwig has a decent few inches on Gable lol.

Will be interesting to see them insult our intelligence acting like it's El Grande
