The Zulqarnain Haider Story

typical asylum seeker...if the cricket related threat wont fly, he'll use sectarian reason. never liked this guy

I honestly dont get the Zoni bashing here, the poor guy IGNORED the bookies and WON the match probably turning down a huge down of money, and he is still getting insulted like his name ends with Butt.

I dont understand PP posters...

He should be honoured as our HERO and its shameful to see some people still laying fingers at em, he felt more safe in uk probably thats why he went there, i hope he speaks up soon and all those who are behind it gets exposed.... ZUNI is our HERO and we like em and hope he gets back in the team

See guys the problem is there is so much mistrust of our fellow countrymen that we don't know how to distinguish genuine case with a topi drama, another ironic reality on where we stand as a nation.

I agree -

But lets wait to see what has happened first - too many theories going round....

Some quite nasty...

If he has any info looks like NOTW will be paying him handsomely for information.

Well look at all the comments on Sky News, everyone is saying he had come to UK for asylum, just shows how ironic is the situation, we fix match we are called cheaters, we don't we are labeled asylum seekers. No love lost for Pakistan. Though I would want to know that why he went to England.

I have seen his facebook profile and the message quoted on cricinfo is exactly as it is on his fb profile.

How many of you think he is telling the truth about his family and him being in danger and bookies approaching him to throw the game today?

If they approached him, I am sure they would have t ried to buy some other players too.. So what do y ou think of the game going on right now? Do you think all the guys are playing honestly here? Sure we look solid at 81/0 but do you think our bowlers were honest?

I am still in a state of shock over this development..

Its effing surreal.

I have a feeling that Zaqi was asked by the pcb officials or one of the mafia members to lose the game but he refused to do so. I just read his status on facebook and although the english isn't very good but using a slight of sense you can clearly see that he is trying to say that one man isn't happy with him hitting the winning runs. I guess he was threatened if he refused to lose the game and left the team knowing his life is in threat and also texted a journalist from GEO saying to provide security for his family.

Zaqi has a very good personality and is very passionate towards cricket and strongly against match fixing because I remember in his previous status on f'book he did say that he was proud of ICC with the strict rules, my mind is saying something is not right, the whole pakistan cricket team is corrupted.

May be its the other way around, may be SA is playing honestly here, look at last game and you will see that their fielding was worst than a associate team, and by the way we lost first wicket.

With Zulqarnain doing good, the only person threatened would by our other wicketkeeper and he has connection with bookies. Doesn't he?

So his family is under threat and he flies to London, leaving them in Pakistan... :31:

So his family is under threat and he flies to London, leaving them in Pakistan... :31:

once he has lodged his asylum case, his family can join him....nice council house waiting in hounslow for him

i don't think he took to being disciplined too well.

Maybe he wanted to see the manchester derby on wednesday.

Anwaar.. are you serious or was that sarcasm?

SherazKhalid, thats exactly what I meant. But I highly doubt the Saffers threw the last match. either they did not or they are very good actors..

MIG, I am not sure what is the real deal behind all this and how genuine this Zoni character is but I feel by doing this, he may have just brought the whole "threat" scenario to limelight. So if something happens to him and his family from hereon forward, we will know who is responsible and that may serve as a deterrant.

By the way, I dont think this was a spur of the moment thing from Zoni. It sounds like a very well thought out plan by him. I just hope it was worth it in the end for Pakistan cricket.

yeah he confided in you he's gonna use either excuse before his abrupt 'disappearance' didn't he?

c'me on people, cut him some slack- we don't know the real story as of yet

my my worst fears are true this goes much much deeper than the rabbit hole from alice in wonderland.

Maybe your hero, not mines. What kind of a "Hero" leaves his team hanging in a pivotal final? Would there have been any more threat to his family had he stayed for the final????? If anything his actions bring more danger to his family....if there is a real threat to begin with.

A true Hero fights for his country above all else. His job was to play for the team but instead he played for himself by deceiving his teammates and supporters and taking off for the UK while he still could.

I dont understand PP posters...

i understand it perfectly

he might come out with some more damaging revelations

so you're going to see plenty PP posters making disparaging remarks in order to damage his credibility (he's childish, he's selling out Pak cricket to the UK tabloids etc etc)

quite predictable really

1.01 imo :ibutt

I dont agree with any of that.

I think if the threat is credible and what we believe he is saying is true, this was the best course of action..

Now if he does have some other ulterior motive who knows..

no you are right, he just went to the uk because of late they are extremely kind towards pakistani cricketers and he probably needed a vacation or needed to meet relatives.

Its only a game buddy, life is much more important

someone is hyper today

i am just wondering what does he hope to accomplish in England? He can talk to ICC in Dubai because thats where they are based. Is he going there to seek asylum? Is he going there to talk to Scotland Yard or is he there to give an interview to NOTW?

ill say it again..he is probably in the UK because of the management who have helped spirit him away and have known all along about his whereabouts...he will probably be staying with someone for protection and speaking without fear when the time is right..he also probably still has a few more months on his visa...

this nonsense about asylum seeking is rubbish...all he ahd to do was join a club, marry some chick for a passport and he's here..but he hasnt done that...his life has been threatened and he deserves our support..some people have ghutiya minds and aukaat!!

totally agree.

So if we go by this theory Great Khan, there is truth to sell outs in the team.. mainly kami, butt and co... who have definitely spot fixed (be it for money or fear of safety)

What ? I've just come back from work and I cannot believe this.

TV channels are showing hsi arrival on airport.. and he is not looking worried and tense..
and also ARY is saying .. his family said he was dis appointed by the fine yesterday..
lets c whats the truth.. but ... jitnain moonh utni batain... abhi tak to yahi hay

I think Family is a little more important then a game of cricket!

damn t hese illegal Indian bookies.. I hate these blood sucking scum of the earth terrorizing people around the world and ruining cricket. I also hate our own guys who sell their souls to them. be it players or local mafia who do their bidding and issue these death threats.

Just read through this thread and I must say that so many posters here on PP are naive or emotional or just immature. Everyone loves to speculate and go overboard with their theories.

What am I saying? this type of stuff is par for the Internet.

do you know how much the fine was? less than an airline ticket to UK?

Could it be that Scotland Yard called him over, afterall there's a link between him, Kami and the bookies.

LOL@ the theory that Kamran Akmal is some shady underworld boss and has hired a mafia goon to take out Zoni.

You couldnt make it up !

I hope he comes out fully and give all the names..

If he makes any money in the process (News of the World etc), so be it. I'd say he deserves it..

Mein hoon kaun? Don Don Don...

Quoted from Osman Samiuddin's article on cricinfo:

A cryptic message left as a status update on the player's Facebook page said: "leaving pakistan cricket because get bad msg fr 1 man fr lose the match in last game." The last match that his Facebook status seems to refer to is the fourth ODI of the series, another closely-fought thriller, in which Haider's unbeaten 19 took Pakistan to victory with one wicket and one ball to spare.

That message from Zulqarnain has been seen umpteen times now by people, I'm sure, but I just wanted to say we should perhaps also entertain the possibility that he in fact meant the last game of the series (i.e. 5th ODI, right now) rather than 'last' as in 'previous' game, which is what cricinfo/Osman et all seem to be suggesting.

The article also mentions he was happy after the win, when speaking to his family, but the following day professed to being worried and reported feeling tension:

As the day wore on, the situation became more confusing. There were reports that Zulqarnain had landed in London. Meanwhile sources in his family indicated that the atmosphere within the squad might have contributed to his decision. One told ESPNcricinfo that Zulqarnain was suitably excited after the fourth ODI victory, but when he called family members the next day, he spoke of tension and pressures within the side getting him down.

Just my two cents, and sorry if this little hypothetical situation has already been discussed - I didn't read everything here.

My point is he may have been referring to the future here (at the time of his writing it) rather than the past game.

Hope he and his family stay safe whatever the situation.

Edit: I don't know what scenario I personally believe btw, but wanted to add another possibility in there.
Could be anything.

Actually when I read his FB message for the first time in the news, I also thought he was talking about the 5th ODI. I dont know why everyone is taking it as the 4th ODI. They're giving his english skills too much credit, imv.

are they not the same jokers who "protected" the sri lankan team?

They are the same jokers that is why Zoni ran to UK rather than going home, which is supposed to be a safe heaven every living being.

Read post# 330 on page 35 :D

that was my first thought as well.. he would have done something about it beforehand if the threat (if there is one) was for the 4th game.. only time will tell.. i have a feeling we may never get to the bottom of it just like the spot fixing three saga.. this will also die down amidst speculation and confusion alongwith Zoni's career.

Yes, could mean that he was being asked to lose the last match..

I am really hoping Zulqernain has a very valid reason that gets proven soon for doing what he did today. Because if not, he may very well have cost us the series.

No Excuses

Zoni has messed things up. If he was feeling threatened even by the PCB then he should have gone to the police and made a complaint.

I agree. Why the UK of all places? I dont understand. He could have strolled into ICC offices in Dubai

Regardless of whether its true or not, giving interviews to these tabloids (for free of course :ibutt) is not the way to go about it. If his life is in danger then go speak to the police, giving interviews so soon after this incident will damage his credibility and his image, but that'll be his fault and no one else's.

Hopefully the matter is nothing serious and him and his family are in no danger.

COuldnt have put it better myself.

This nonsense about asylum, or him being a coward, shows how many idiots we have on here.

In a shocking turn of events, skynews has understood that the death threats received by Haider were sent from Kamran Akmal's phone. Experts say that Kamran threatened his fellow wicketkeeper and demanded that he drop at least one catch in the next game.

After being queried by Scotland Yard, Zulqarnain claimed that although Kamran was not involved in any illegal betting activity, he desperately wanted his fellow wicket keeper to drop a few catches as he was afraid that if Haider did not do so, the public would realize just how bad Kamran was at keeping wicket.

Similarities between Wasim Akram and Zulqarnain

"Wasim Akram's low point was the 1996 Cricket World Cup in Pakistan and India, when he had to pull out of the quarter final match against India, citing injury. After Pakistan's defeat, there were angry protests outside his home and riots across the country from angry fans who accused the team of throwing the match and a government inquiry was launched into the failure."

I'm sure everyone here remembers this episode. I don't know if anyone has posted this, but, to me, the Zulqarnain incident appears to be almost identical. Except that Zulqarnain has taken a more drastic step (and perhaps, the right step). My guess is that he is heading to the British press to break a major story.

A bit too seriously worded, you might just fool more than a few posters!

Lol, you had me there until the end :shahzaib

Just talked to a person in Pakistan who knows Zoni's family. I don't know if he has talked to Zoni's family or not since the news came out. This is what he had to say.

The players who are still involved in match fixing do not want any other person as wicket keeper except Kamran Akmal. As far as I know, Zoni is a very simple and humble man. The current players of Pakistan team are still involved in match fixing except a few (2-3?).

The 4th ODI was also fixed, Pak was supposed to lose this match but unexpectedly, Zoni won that match for Pak. He left the team because of team management and the players who want Kamran Akmal instead of him.
