Trump raises India tariffs to 50% over Russian oil purchases [Update@post#255]

Hindudva Bhakts must be puzzled to who to support here as they loved their Dooonaal Trump for his Muslim ban, his parties usual islamophobic rhetorics and his blind Nazi Israel's genocide support of Palestinians.

Putting personal biases aside, India has taken to an extent right stance by buying Russian oil and isn't willing to sell it's people like our Generals to the worst of the lot that is American Zionist Politicians. For the better of the world alliance with Russia China needs to strengthen among Asian countries instead of bending over backwards for America and Nato. White supremacy and West is always right narrative needs to end and it's barbaric constant war mongering could only end if other countries take the economic and technological lead.

If not for nonsensical hatefilled Hindudva extremists, Pakistan and India both could have gained a lot more by making alliance with Asian giants and keeping peace and harmony instead of inflicting Hindudva masses with deep hatred for Muslims and Pakistan. Our wars should have always been against corruption, poverty and hunger instead of borders.

Turkey are also imported Russian oils, but no high tarrifs on Turkey as Turkey is largest buyer of US arms n ammunition. Washington wants India to buy arms n ammunition from them only.

Brazil not imported Russian oil but US slapped 50% on them.

Trump will realised what he done after few months when US citizens erupts on the streets due to inflation

I’m not a fan of Trump and his overall tariff scheme. Nor do I have ill will against India. But I actually support this. Too many lives have been lost in the Ukraine war, and too much money wasted on military. I think stronger efforts to try to stop Russia from continuing this war is necessary. You can’t win a war through force or invasion as no one will go into Russia for fear of nuclear threat, and Russia will continue to bomb Ukrainian territory from afar. Russia needs to be economically hurt that they can not afford to continue the war. And ideally their allies hurt economically by supporting Russia that they will urge a ceasefire too.

Instead we’ve had countries profit off the war buying Russian oil and other goods at lower prices. Keeping Russia afloat and reducing the urgency of other countries to try and convince Russia to end the war. I don’t even blame countries like India choosing to buy oil from Russia, they are not involved in the Russia Ukraine conflict. But the west who are actually involved and sending money, people dying, I don’t know why all measures by the west to stop the war haven’t been tried such as cutting cheap oil sales from Russia to other countries.

Every country have a right to do trade in favor of them..... India will not buy Russian oil if US provides us Saudi oil @ russian rate. India bought Russian oil as per international trade regulations, not violated it.

China, Turkey also bought Russian oil, even US himself bought Uranium from Russia ... now US impose section/tarrifs on themselves?

Trade between eu and Russia and us and Russia has already dropped massively. I think it’s something like around 80% I heard. A lot of remaining trade is stuff like food and agriculture which shouldn’t be reduced drastically as it could lead to food problems. Yes USA and eu could potentially do more but I don’t know how much realistically they can do.

Some other countries on the other hand have increased their trade with Russia taking advantage of the situation for instance buying cheaper oil. Russia has devastated economically early in the war but has slowly recovered and maintained due to relying on trade to other nations. If there were tariffs on countries buying Russian oil right at the start, maybe this war would have ended as soon as it began. I think the us government at the time was scared to do this for fear of crashing the global markets and of course losing money themselves.

The way that Trump has gone crazy with tariffs and somehow hasn’t significantly crashed the world market, make me sad that maybe these tactics should have been used for better reasons in the Ukraine war. I guess it’s the power of hindsight, and maybe Russian oil tariffs would have caused a global crash at the time. But how things are now it feels just a small escalation of trumps existing tariff war. So I think it’s a good decision.

On the contrary, I'm pretty pragmatic about this. In the current environment, neither USA nor Russia is a reliable partner. For better or worse, we're back to the pre-first world war era of purely transactional relationships, shifting alliances and protective nationalism.

We don't want Trump as an ally - he wouldn't be stable anyway. We need the US as a trading partner. If that means we need to buy more expensive oil for a month or two till Trump moves on to his next pet peeve, I think we should be perfectly happy to do it. Putin's pragmatic enough to know that we'll buy plenty of stuff from him again when the heat's off and the tantrum's done.

We're not strong enough yet to stand on principle on such matters especially when the principle itself is flimsy.

This performative urge to showcase strategic superiority for domestic applause does India no favors. India need to appease Trump, he is a temporary storm. He’ll be gone soon, likely leaving the Republican Party in shambles. The odds favor a Democrat taking over, and historically, Democratic administrations have been more sympathetic toward India anyway.

What we’re seeing is an ego clash, not a strategy. India doesn’t possess strategic superiority, only the US, Russia, and China can claim that. A pragmatic Indian would be angling for a deal, maximizing gains from a volatile situation. But the nationalist Indian? busy beating 56 inch chest for an audience at home. That bravado has humiliated India on the global stage more than once, and it looks like history might be on repeat.

If Trump and Putin come to an agreement next week then this will blow over for India.

Next week is important. If Putin messes Trump around he could take it out on India.

I am truly a peaceful person at heart but in this instance for the common good we need no ceasefire in Ukraine next week, so that the Indian menace is thwarted.

Next steps of the US Government will dictate whether this is getting deescalated, escalated or getting personal.

I think this would be a step too far and unlikely to happen. Trump regime new about the previous ban and the gujrat stuff is not new. So it will make trump himself look bad for calling him a great guy and a "killer"

They will focus on trade only.

Yes I think this may be another inflexion point. Our first big set of major reforms was also under duress - humiliation at going with a begging bowl to the IMF and pledging gold. It turned out for the best though.

There is no doubt that opening up agriculture especially wheat is going to be painful - both socially and politically... potentially losing BJP a couple of state elections but it has to be done sooner or later if we're going to modernise the sector.

Trump was supported because prior to elections because he was very appreciative of India. He even condemned the treatment of Hindus in Bangladesh. So we all praised him. Now he is putting unjust Tariff on us, we are rightfully criticizing him. So why would that make us clown?

What is the root? We are pointing out your lack of self awareness is saying modi has surrendered..tarrifs are a failure of modi etc. if you instead focused the discussion on how the tarrifs are negatively impacting India and why it is bad for India or how Pakistan can take advantage of it..then the discussion would be different.

The only reason we bring paksitanis abject surrender since last 20 years in discussion is because you all are pointing to standing up to us and not giving into unjust demands as something that is bad.

Keep the discussion focused on how the relationship has deteriorated or what India can do or how India is screwed and we won't bring Pakistan into the discussion.

I respect that India asserts its national interests in the face of US pressure by buying Russian oil, and wish Pakistan would act similarly and implements the gas deal with Iran.

However what deserves no respect whatsoever was the nauseating sycophancy towards Trump in his first term which has totally backfired.

And the hypocrisy of accusing Pakistanis of not caring about the Uighur Muslims because of the relations with China, when the same can be said of buying Russian oil at the expense of the Ukrainians.

I think we can all agree that we can criticise our Government’s foreign policies.

India has really profited from the Ukraine war by acting as a middleman for the Russians and taking a cut for selling refined crude. The surprise is that why has the USA tolerated this for so long, and the blame goes on Sleepy Joe and the cabal around him.
