Trump raises India tariffs to 50% over Russian oil purchases [Update@post#255]

Nah the fact that Russia (see the Ambassador's statements) is being measured in it's response means some deal has been worked out behind the scenes. Trump is a child in many ways and the idea should always be to give him visible wins while doing whatever you want away from the public eye.

I expect a lot will change on the face while nothing much changes in reality. India will probably see a sudden increase in shipments from another source - Venezuela? Iran? which will in reality be Russian oil redirected.

Again, you are taking Trump as a fool. And he is far from that. You risk his ire even more trying to be too clever.
How is Venezuelan oil be Russian redirected or for the matter Iran? Don't you think they need to sell their own to keep their own economies. They will stop exporting their own oil so India can make money at their own expense. Makes sense does it?

Venezuela has US troops surrounding it with an imminent regime change in the offing and similarly Iran is too busy trying to overcome what happened to it recently.

I know you are an Indian, and so in your world anything that India does, always has a genius move behind it. However, for the rest of us in the real world, India has just been forced to kowtow to Trump.

So all that MODI did this to America, Modi did that to America... SUPAPOWA etc. etc. is gone..

Trump says Modi has agreed to stop buying Russian oil

President Donald Trump has said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to stop buying Russian oil, as the US seeks to put economic pressure on the Kremlin as part of efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump told reporters he had received assurances from Modi that India would halt its purchases "within a short period of time", which he called "a big stop".

A spokeswoman for the Indian embassy in Washington DC would not comment. The US president has sought to leverage India's purchases of Russian oil in his trade war, but Delhi has resisted, creating a diplomatic rift.

Oil and gas are Russia's biggest exports, and Moscow's biggest customers include China, India and Turkey.

"Now I've got to get China to do the same thing," Trump said in the Oval Office on Wednesday, as part of his administration's broader push to cut off Moscow's energy funding.

The Trump administration is also pushing Japan to stop importing oil and gas from Russia, and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he communicated this "expectation" to visiting Japanese Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato on Wednesday.

India cannot "immediately" halt oil shipments, Trump said, adding that the shift will be "a little bit of a process, but the process is going to be over with soon".

The Trump administration has imposed 50% tariffs on goods from India, levies that Trump has characterised as punishment against Delhi for buying Russian oil and weapons.

The tariffs – which took effect in August and are among the highest in the world – include a 25% penalty for transactions with Russia that are a key source of funds for its war in Ukraine.

Modi has for months stood his ground, arguing that India is neutral in the Russia-Ukraine war despite his country's ties with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Indian officials have called the Trump administration's accusations that Delhi profits from Russia's war in Ukraine a double standard, citing ongoing trade with Russia in the US and Europe.

India relies on Russian crude oil, which Delhi has continued to buy at a discount, to support its economy - the fifth largest in the world.

The dispute over Russian oil has strained the relationship between Trump and Modi, although the US president on Wednesday praised the Indian leader as a "great man".

Modi said last week that he spoke with Trump and that they "reviewed good progress achieved in trade negotiations".

BBC
This u-turn deserves a thread of its own!!

Modi surrendered yet again!!

This has nothing to do with the good for the common man/woman in India but all to do with saving Modi's billionaire overlords from the US going after them.

yet again False claimed by psycho Trump and delusional Pakistani people started Bhangra over it.

No one can dedicated indian policy unlike Pakistan who is just puppet of USA.

Read the article again.... It's a very Indian thing to do and go off on a tangent. They made it about modi speaking to trump.

You do realise, the Indian ambassador was there, not sure of its here or in another one, he points him out and says Indian ambassador is here. Modi could be reassuring trump via the ambassador. That is what they do, they carry messages.

But again Indians do what they do best... and obfuscate and spin into some victory. Just say it then clearly if they have stopped buying Russian oil or not. Simple.

Don't expect the americans to be charitable after Modi ran off to Shanghai like a phool to embrace Xi and Putin; images of which which were splashed across all the world newspapers and annoyed Uncle Sam. Modi is as low IQ as they come.
Modi is diversifying and not putting all eggs in us basket. Is is no body’s ally and unreliable.

1. You still haven't said how Cpl Kumar lost his arm on an airbase in May.

2. Have they put out statement unequivocally denying trump's claim on Indian stopping Russian oil? It is very simple.

3. Whether Modi spoke on Phone or via his ambassador who was there in the whitehouse is immaterial. Its all the same.

Unlike Pakistan we have defeated system to destroy missile, drones with ease.

But Pakistan failed to stop a single bramose missiles, forget about Pakistan most of countries don't have capability to intercept brahmos including China . And we have Many more advanced version of bramose which we haven't used.

Trump is very smart in a few ways and an idiot in many ways. The challenge of course is how to leverage his lack of attention to nuance and detail.

As far as being confident on a way being found, it's not just because of Indian genius (though I must say Indian foreign policy has been decently well managed over the last few years). It's because of the whole system behind it. World oil prices are currently low because Russia can export oil through India. Basically crude refined by India. Below graph from Reuters illustrates where Reliance Industries - by far the biggest player in this gets it's oil from and where it sends it to. You can see Europe and other Asian countries are big buyers.

There are so many moving parts to this that you could see global consequences of India suddenly stopping buying crude from Russia and trying to buy from elsewhere. There have to be discussions on who's making up the $50B in Russian crude India buys. Is Saudi Arabia producing more?

That's why I'm pretty sure a workaround will be found at least in the short term. If not Venezuela, Iran etc...countries that don't mind fronting for Russia. The moment Trump realises that Russia crude dropping out of the market, means higher prices at the pump for American consumers and higher inflation for everyone, he'll sing a different tune.

Fixed it for you and it's based on reality instead Fake Propaganda like you :klopp :kp
Field marshall is in charge of Pakistan army

Trump is in charge of India. He has declared ceasefire for you, and stopped you buying oil. Both things Modi denies.

How can a foreign President get away with making statements on your behalf?

No. You tried to deceive and got caught, tried to palm off one Kumar for another. Where is the mention of Varun Kumar getting hit by falling debris? The Indian source I posted specifically mentioned missile attack.

India imports to export far beyond its domestic requirement, whereas other countries buy for their domestic use. So he is going after India which is clearly doing it for money over the dead bodies of Ukrainians. If India stops, the europeans and others automatically fall in line.

India stops laundering oil for Russia, then Russia has to look to ceasefire. Russian oil comes then back to market naturally. Look at this beautiful solution, no third party money siphoning needed and Ukraianians don't keep on dying.

Do I care about you opinion? Absolutely not . Now continue with Hindutva, sanghi etc propaganda :klopp :kp
Hindutva is a reality, and no Hindutva cares about facts, which means the reality is false, and your alternative facts are the truth. So obviously, you wouldn’t care about anyone’s opinion that doesn’t align with Hindutva lies.

India's foreign ministry has said it is "not aware" of a phone call in which US President Donald Trump claimed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil

On Wednesday, Trump said his Indian counterpart had "assured me today" that it would end Russian oil imports, a move the US has pushed for in a bid to increase economic pressure on the Kremlin to end the war in Ukraine.

But asked about the call on Thursday, an Indian government spokesman cast doubt on Trump's account, saying he was "not aware of any conversation between the two leaders" taking place the previous day.

The Indian government had earlier said discussions were still "ongoing" with the US over its Russian oil purchases.

It comes as a White House official confirmed to the BBC that Trump plans to speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin in a call on Thursday.

India has become a key energy customer for Russia since the outbreak of the war, partly allowing the Kremlin to withstand the impact of Ukrainian allies slashing oil and gas imports, the country's biggest export market.

The Trump administration has put public and diplomatic pressure on India to end its support for the Russian energy market as it seeks to increase the Kremlin's economic isolation and force an end to the war. Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Speaking at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said he had received assurances from Modi on Wednesday that India would halt its purchases "within a short period of time".

In its initial response, the Indian government did not directly dispute that the call between Trump and Modi had taken place. It read: "Our consistent priority to safeguard the interests of the Indian consumer in a volatile energy scenario. Our import policies are guided entirely by this objective."

The Indian government's second response on Thursday raises further questions over whether a deal has been struck between Washington and Delhi.

BBC News has contacted the White House and State Department for comment.

Delhi's continued reliance on Russian crude oil, which it imports at a discount, have become a key source of contention in US-India relations under the Trump administration, which has taken a tougher line on the Ukraine war after Putin failed to agree a peace deal with the White House.

India is second only to China for how much Russian energy it imports, funding which helps to prevent the collapse of Russia's critical fossil fuel industry.

Modi's government has accused Ukraine's allies of hypocrisy, pointing to ongoing trade with Russia, including energy imports to the European Union, albeit at reduced levels.

In its latest round of sanctions unveiled this week, the UK government said it would target a major Indian oil refinery as it "continue(s) to get facilitate getting Russian oil onto global markets". Officials said India's Nayara Energy Limited imported 100 million barrels of Russian crude oil worth more than $5bn (£3.75bn) in 2024 alone.

Are you sure you're not using economics from Trump University?

Let me make it simple. Yes India buys crude from Russia, refines and sells it to many countries including European countries because they need it. If India stops buying and refining Russian crude, it doesn't mean refined petroleum suddenly appears from somewhere else by magic forcing Russia to it's knees. I'm sure some countries will step up production but essentially there will be a shortage of crude at least in the short and more likely in the medium term.

Yes we can punish Russia by taking away it's second biggest crude market but everyone including Americans, Europeans, Pakistanis and Indians will have to be willing to pay the price - a much higher price at the pump.

This is absolutely correct.

The West wants to win the war in Ukraine, but without letting oil prices climb, because that would be political suicide. That’s exactly why the previous government made sure Russian oil kept flowing into India.

Trump has announced that India agreed with him to not buy Cheap oil from Rooskies.

At this point, I don't know how much to trust Trumpkin. He says a lot whenever he gives interviews(which is pretty much every hour).

Yep...contrary to the belief of Trumpians like @IronShield, global problems don't get solved by the orange buffoon throwing tantrums and threatening tariffs. Russia manages to sell it's crude because the world has a need/greed for it. If India and Indian oligarchs don't act as the middleman, someone else will step up and do it.

Europe was shaken by Trump threats and they pretty much dance to his tunes like his court clowns. Only India, China and Russia so far have shown some spine. Not sure how long India can hold off from blinking.

USA needs to provide alternate options to India to satisfy its ginormous domestic energy needs. Threats can only work so long as other options for India's energy needs are provided.
