India U-19 captain Uday Saharan and Bangladesh spinner Ariful Islam had to be separated by the umpire after they were involved in a heated argument.

India. Bangladesh. And Under-19 World Cup. There is history, there is tension, there is aggression, there is drama and of course, there is quality cricket. It was no different this time around. In India's first match of the 2024 U-19 World Cup against Bangladesh at Bloemfontein in South Africa, Uday Saharan, the captain of the Indian side, was involved in a heated argument with Ariful Islam. And it happened when Saharan was in the middle of a lovely innings, stitching a big partnership with Adarsh Singh.

After the second ball of the 25th over, Saharan was seen having a few words with Ariful. The Bangladesh all-rounder was not the one to back away. He came close to the Indian captain and before things could go out of control, umpire Donovan Koch stepped in. He separated the two and had a word with both of them.

It was difficult to gauge what triggered the exchange but replays did seem to suggest it might have been due to Ariful words when Saharan was trying to go back for the second run in the previous ball. The right-handed batter returned to his crease and immediately turned towards to Bangladesh spinner to mouth a few words. Ariful was having none of it. he gave it back before the umpire intervened.

When this was transpiring in the middle, the commentators were quick to remind the viewers about the heated final between the two teams in the 2020 edition of the tournament. It was one of the most ill-tempered matches in the history of U-19 World Cups as players from both sides sledged uncontrollably, bumped into each other many times and even came close to exchanging blows at the end of the match, which was won by Bangladesh.

From Robel Hossain vs Virat Kohli to now this rivalry in U19s twice. I love it when Bangladeshi players put up a fight with Indian players on the field because Bangladeshi cricket is not as it was in the 1990s or 2000s.

Putting up a fight and starting one are two different things. As long as it’s not personal, I think it’s alright and adds to the fun!

Some problems with BD

Maruf was reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during Bangladesh's clash against India.

The left-arm pacer infringed Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”

The incident occurred during the 44th over of the match when Maruf gave Aravelly Avanish a send-off by pointing aggressively to the pavilion twice, after dismissing him.

As a result, one demerit point has been added to Maruf’s disciplinary record, which was his first offence in a 24-month period.

There was no need for a formal hearing as Maruf admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Match Referee Shaid Wadvalla and levelled by on-field umpires Donovan Koch and Nigel Duguid, third umpire Allahudien Paleker and fourth umpire Langton Rusere.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

In a fiercely contested clash, India emerged victors by a comfortable 84-run margin. India posted a target on the back of half-centuries from Adarsh Singh and captain Uday Saharan. For Bangladesh, Maruf was at the top of his game, recording a five-wicket haul.

Saumy Pandey led the way with the ball for India, bagging a four-for as Bangladesh were bowled out for 167.

BD players at junior level have this "ultra-aggression" even if it is contrived against India. I don't think India has any such aggression against a particular side including Pakistan. Wonder if BD does it against all the sides.

Not as competitive as it was in 99/00s you mean?

They will learn how to behave as they get older. Such things happen at this age.

As a Bangladeshi, I do not support this type of thing.

They should focus on performances instead of doing these cheap things (cringy celebrations, excessive aggression etc.). They also lost the game by quite a big margin.

BD players need to take a chill pill and just focus on performance.

Ban vs India is like Afg vs Pak. Always fiery contests and lots of words exchanged.

For a board with so much resources and a massive pool of skilled players the team keeps underachieving. The strange thing is that it's a focussed group of players, they're all very fit, individually have the right skillset producing batsmen and bowlers of good standard, but as a team they disappoint. Unable to pinpoint why!

Bangladesh won the u-19 ICC tournament in 2020. What happened to the BD players of that team ? Did any of them go on to become a star in the senior side ? The u-19 captain of India in that tournament was Yashaswi Jaiswal and he is doing rather well in senior cricket.

you underacheive when you have some ability and don't reach your potential. Indian team is a big under achiever so are SA team. BD is one of least talented teams out there. Most of their players will struggle to make it to top nations regional teams. I don't know one single player from BD who will make it into top three or four teams. They are not underachievers, they are par-achievers.

Shoriful, Hridoy are doing okay. None of them will be greats of the game, but they will have a decent career in BD

Shoriful is from that side isn't he?

Shoriful and Towhid were in that team. They are now both mainstream in BD team.

Other players who got chances (on and off) were Shamim Hossain, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Mahmudul Hasan Joy, and Tanzid Hasan. Shahadat Hossain recently played 2 Tests against New Zealand.

So, from that batch, only 2 players managed to be mainstream.
