[VIDEO] "Look at the ages of Anderson or Broad, I'm not finished in int'l cricket": Mohammad Abbas

Mohammad Abbas speaks to Saj about the benefits of playing in County Cricket, Pakistan’s mixed-form in Test cricket, why PCB needs to ensure Pakistan plays more Test cricket, the importance of Pakistan pacers playing more first-class cricket, why he feels experience is vital in international cricket and why he feels he shouldn’t be written off for the Pakistan Test team.

Good attitude from him. He could have easily been satisfied with his yearly guaranteed county gig while his career winds down.

Pakistan have the worst test attack in the world and that's because most of our talented bowlers can't or won't be more than white ball specialists.

While Abbas has obvious limitations in international cricket it's refreshing to see he still has genuine passion for red ball cricket. Maybe he can still do a role on certain pitches or guide some youngsters in the right direction.

I'm surprised he hasn't played more for Pakistan a test bowling average of 20 economy below 3 and almost 100 wickets!

You need to look at his last 2-3 series

Hes been worked out and been pretty ineffective in the last 2-3 years

At one point his avge was 16-17

He cant go on bowling at 75mphr if he wants to play for pakistan

The man is a wicket-taking machine for Hants!

Think they will put up a statue for him soon at this rate.

His international career will depend on whenever Pakistan tour England next. If they do, he must be brought back.

Not whenever Pakistan tour England, he should be brought back immediately into the test side. He is surely better than the likes of Mohammad Ali, Mir Hamza and all the other trash we have been playing lately.

I like what he said about Pakistan pacers and the importance of playing first-class cricket and gaining experience in the longer format.

Too many bowlers these days whose focus is on T20 cricket.

He has passion for red ball cricket because that’s the only format he has value in. In the shorter formats he is a liability. You’re talking as if he is intentionally focusing on the longer format and hence deserves the appreciation

Unless we are playing in seaming conditions in England and New Zealand

It's pretty pointless selecting him.

Besides we hardly play any tests and the way franchise cricket is cluttering up the calender expect further reduction in intl games in particular tests for smaller nations like us which unlike t20s don't make any money .

Not much for pakistani fast bowlers in test cricket especially when they play in home conditions , t20 gives them more than enough money and a lot less work. Who will bowl 30 overs a day on a dead pitch ?

I hope that isn't the attitude of our upcoming pacers. If it is, then our Test team will be even worse and Test cricket will become an afterthought in Pakistan.

Test cricket has always been the pinnacle for any cricketer, if that changes, then I fear the worst.

His bowling reminds me of Mark Ealham and Ian Austin of England. These type of bowlers were only effective on a green top.

Sir PCB need to prepare pitches which can offer some balance for fast bowlers in test cricket. If we play like 4 5 tests every year in pakistan on pitches like pindi then we arent exactly attracting guys to play test cricket. Its PCBs fault in my opinion.

If Abbas got to play 6/7 Tests a year on green tops like Broad and Anderson, maybe that would be true.

When do they play 6/7 tests per year on green top, do let me know.

At tops there is maybe one test a year in the English summer which has a green top now

Superb start to the County season for Abbas:

He's the leading wicket-taker in the County Championship with 21 wickets at an average of 13.71.

Worth a recall or are his international cricket days over?

Absolutely worth a recall. Some of the players he was getting got for the Surrey team regularly play for England.

I think it’s also important about what the team management expect from Abbas.

Yes he’s quite slow nowadays, where teams negate him by playing outside the crease.

However, you then play him with Rizwan (not Sarfi) up to the stumps.

Alternatively you can also use him in a holding role whilst playing an attacking leggie like Usama Mir as your only spinner.

Should be recalled and play in Australia.

Not because i expect him to take any 5 wicket hauls, but he is literally the best bet in terms of damage limitation as we canter towards our usual humilation there.

We have a serious lack of red ball bowlers at the moment and practically none are going to be threatening for a tour down under. We may as well send in the old horse to achieve a 2.5 RPO and maybe help us drag a test out to day 4 somewhere.

Shaheen
Abbas
Naseem
Faheem
Abrar Ahmed

Should be our test attack for 2023. I don't see who else is more deserving of a place in red ball cricket than Abbas at the moment.

If we are smart we will develop plans with Rizwan coming up to the stumps to him. Batsmen will not dare get too creative with Rizwan there.

I’m sorry you’re not troubling anyone at 120 kph. County cricket should not be taken seriously in 2023 particularly in the case of trundlers like Abbas.

Yes , may be try him in series against srilanka.
His career can easily be divided into two parts.

First 12 matches 61 wickets @ 16.6 apiece.

Next 13 matches 29 wickets @36.8 apiece.

Saying all this , we only have shaheen shah in tests. None of the other fast bowlers are working. I wouldnt mind abbas at the moment.

He deserves a recall. A proper test match bowler.

Play him in australia and i guarantee you he will go for 200 runs in one innings once the aussie bowlers step out of the crease and line up his military medium dibbly dobbly bowling.

He was absolutely trash before getting dropped. Classic case of absence enhancing reputation.

Dropping him has benifitted him because in his absence, we played on horrific dead highways at home. Anyone thinking Abbas would even manage to be economical vs the Bazball carnage we witnessed at home or even the Aussie openers on those perfect pattas we served is seriously mistaken.

Abbas was a complete failure in South Africa, Australia, England, NZ and even WI before getting dropped. That as the senior most bowler as well.

He isn't even a better test bowler than Faheem Ashraf right now, and Faheem himself has value only as an all rounder.

Not part of Pakistan's tour of Sri Lanka - is his Test future over?

Mohammad Abbas has been once again wasn't added in Pakistan test squad. This is what Wahab had to say about him during his press conference today where he announce Pakistan test squad for the Australia tour.

"Mohammad Abbas is a good bowler and has done well in county cricket but we have kept in mind Australian conditions. There is more bounce and reverse there and hence, Hasan would do better there."

Abbas should have been picked for the Australia tour his record is impressive against them.

Specifically on wickets which support more bounce and swing can make him almost unplayable.

In Australia he will only be able to do a holding role.

yes in this world cup we have already witnessed!
You really want to see 124 km trundler get swatted across like a fly by Warner again? Pick sameen gul

All he will do is hold one end and average 50 plus in the series.

Granted none of shaheen or naseem have been good there but atleast they looked like taking wickets.

Mohd Abbas is giving continously outstanding performance in the county circuit plus his performance against ais has been outstanding and should have been picked over faheem ashraf.

The main reason given for his non selection is that his pace has dropped from mid 130s to high 120s.
Faheem ashraf is bowling in the mid to low 120s. N gets very little lateral movement in the air or off the deck.
On top of that he is a crap batsman more like a tailender.
A very very poor selection.....surely a parchi if ever their was one

Mohammad Abbas has taken his 44th First-class Five-wicket Haul as he picked up 6 for 19 against PTV while playing for State Bank.

Feel really sorry for him. He’s such a good bowler but a tad slow and with a kookaburra ball is only decent for the first 10 overs (five by him). Being slow and mostly bringing the ball into right hander he’s a tad predictable and a batsman can easily walk down the pitch to him to nullify. But I don’t know how he has been in the last 18 months. Maybe he’s improved with county cricket but either way it’ll be good for the selectors to say something

On Day 2, For SBP Mohammad Abbas took 3 wickets for 41 runs against PTV in President's Trophy 2023-24.

SBP's Mohammad Abbas secured match figures of (10/122) against PTV. Which resulted in 10 wickets victory of SBP over PTV on Day 3.

First innings 6/19
Second innings 4/103

12th ten-wicket match haul for Mohammad Abbas in First Class cricket

I don't understand why he is being dropped from the Pakistan team. He should have been playing consistently for the Pakistan Test and ODI sides.

He was dropped for a reason. He was no better than Faheem Ashraf when dropped. Pace hardly touching 120k. He looked like Saurav Ganguly after 10 overs.

And odis? Are you serious? Not a great white ball bowler even in domestics.

Fahim whilst is crap he's still can hold a bat and Abbas is a number 11 pluss you can't have khurram and Abbas in the same xi.

I think before you worry about all rounders or even bits and pieces you have to think what are the best chances of getting 20 wickets.

You won’t get 20 wickets with the likes of Faheem or Agha salman. With a subpar shaheen and a wayward Wasim you might get 20 wickets but with a score of 400-500. So those wickets are pointless, the weight of runs will drown the batsmen.

In that context it might be worth trying abbas with Khurram and Jamal. At least it’s unlikely to reThe problem is if he’s too slow they will just come down the track to him like England did

Even if they had picked Abbas we still would have conceded close to 400.

I think he deserves another go.

If i recall he was averaging above 40 last 10 tests (or close to) with the ball before he was shown the door - mainly because batsmen had figured out how to play him by standing outside the crease thereby ruling out any chance of an LBW.

But he's been preforming pretty consistently in the domestic circuit and think he deserve another shot. It's not like we have Wasim Akram's lining up at the door.

I think apart from Australia or maybe even South Africa. He fits in the team for other tours.

I think bowler like him will work as part of a group with a leader of the pack. At this point pakistan has no leader in their attack.

Abbas was discarded too early, several players got repeated chances there is a long list, but Abbas didn't another opportunity to prove himself. Based on current form & performance Faheem & Shaheen doesn't deserve to play, neither they are taking wickets nor troubling batsman with their bowling.

Forget playing because he’s past his prime now. The quicker he retires and becomes a bowling coach the better.

Pakistan should groom him for this role just like they would for a promising player.

They should ensure he gets qualified up to speed, gets some experience then into the national set up as soon as possible.

Abbas’s skills could finally produce the next Wasim or Asif.

Yep Abbas should focus on coaching duties now, he can prove his mettle there.

So we are fine to take likes of Mir Hamza and Hassan Ali bowing at below 135 Kph to Australia but had an issue with Mohammad Abbas even though the guy would have been excellent here.

We should have picked Abbas for Australia tour because with such pace he is the most lethal bowler i have ever seen.

I wouldn’t take county cricket as a barometer of being international quality, especially considering the current state of England’s own test side.

A finished Hasan Ali was dominating the county bowling charts a year or two ago.

As for Mr Abbas, he needs to remember his performances in Aus and NZ and realise he is way past it.

On this day in 1990, Mohammad Abbas was born. Happy Birthday to this right-arm pacer who represented Pakistan in 25 Test matches and picked up 90 wickets at an impressive average of 23.

Deserves another chance?
