Coming in to bat at number 4 with the score reading 57-2, Inzamam ul Haq showed just how easy it was to bat on a pitch that offered very little to the bowlers. Just about the only success New Zealand bowlers had was with the first-ball dismissal of Shahid Afridi. After that, it was entirely Inzamam's marathon innings that continued to hurt them out in the soaring heat of Lahore. Partnering with Imran Nazir, the pair added 204 runs for the 3rd wicket as Inzamam finished Day 1 undefeated on 159.
On Day 2, Inzamam continued where he left off and reached his double century before lunch. Batting in the scorching heat of Lahore, Inzamam started cramping and was temporarily allowed a runner, before the privelege was taken away. This meant Inzamam was now primarily dealing in boundaries. All the while, his main problem was that he was running out of partners on the other end. Courtesy of a 111-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Saqlain Mushtaq he was able to reach to 250. As he continued to motor along, he reached 300 during a 78-run parternship with Shoaib Akhtar for the ninth-wicket and became only the second Pakistani to do so after Hanif Mohammad.
Not only did Inzamam score his personal best, his innings of 329 meant Pakistan amassed 643 in the 1st innings and put the opposition in immense pressure, making a result inevitable.
To give a better perspective on how Inzamam paced his innings following are some numbers:
First 100 came in 191 balls
Second 100 in 132 balls
Third 100 consisting of seven fours and four sixes came at a run a ball (100 balls)
