Dismissals down the leg side are no longer freak or 'unluckly'. They are legitimate ploys against certain batsmen and teams employ them judiciously.

They are now being used more and more, cramping batsmen for room after setting them up.

Shan Masood has to defend all kinds of deliveries - and he didn't this time.

Pakistan should look for a draw by trying to score at least 300 runs at 2.5, runs per over. That will waste a lot of time. That should be the plan now. Waste time.

My sentiments exactly, I reckon tomorrow is still a batting day along with parts of day 4. It’s a matter of learning from what Williamson and Co did, play out overs, get yourself set and look for a big score. Big test coming tomorrow for these batsmen!

Dont think that will help much , nz will still have two more days. They can bat for 60 70 overs and put pakistan in. Pakistan will need to bat for more than 150 overs to have any chance at a draw.

Had Pak held onto their catches and went with Williamson review NZ would have made only 350.Shaheen even bowled a no ball that was a dismissal of Wagner on 399.
Pak will most likely lose now, with no Babar to play a substantial knock.

New Zealand continue to dominate at the Bay Oval

A brilliant display of batting from the Black Caps saw them to a solid first-innings total on day two of the Boxing Day Test in Mount Maunganui.

A century from skipper Kane Williamson, along with important contributions from Ross Taylor (70), Henry Nicholls (56) and BJ Watling (73) powered the hosts to 431 before Pakistan went to stumps on 30/1 with Abid Ali (19*) and nightwatchman Mohammad Abbas in the middle.

Kyle Jamieson drew the first blood for New Zealand as the visitors lost Shan Masood (10), who looked set at the crease, after he faced 42 balls.

Earlier, New Zealand resumed the day on 222/3, with skipper Williamson and Nicholls in the middle. It was a good start to the morning session as Nicholls brought up his fifty in the second over of the day before the partnership between him and Williamson passed 100 in the sixth over.

Just two overs after that, the New Zealand skipper reached his ton, his 23rd in Test cricket, as the home side continued to build a strong total.

However, after drinks, 17-year-old Naseem Shah managed to get the breakthrough as he had Nicholls (56) caught off a short ball by Shan Masood, despite the ball appearing to have come off his arm.

Pakistan then got the prized wicket of Williamson (129) as the ICC Men's Player of the Decade nominee nicked one to Haris Sohail off the bowling of Yasir Shah to leave the Black Caps on 281/5.

New Zealand reached 301/5 at lunch but not long after the interval, Faheem Ashraf had Mitchell Santner (19) playing and edging to Mohammad Rizwan. In came Kyle Jamieson and the big man hit back-to-back boundaries off Shah, including a big six, as the hosts looked to give the score a quick boost.

Jamieson, who was averaging 54 with the bat before this game, shared an important 66-run stand with Watling. Their solid stand came to an end shortly before the tea break, when Mohammad Abbas had him caught behind for 32.

Pakistan claimed the wicket of Tim Southee on the first ball after the tea break courtesy of a brilliant googly from Yasir Shah. A few overs later, Neil Wagner got a lifeline. Afridi had shattered the stumps with a perfect yorker but it was declared a no-ball for overstepping. In the same over, he survived an LBW decision after the ball-tracking showed it was missing the wickets.

After missing out on Wagner's wicket, Afridi struck once again to claim the important wicket of Waling, who was caught in the gully by Yasir. The New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman played a solid knock, and his 145-ball innings featured eight fours.

Completely agree, this match cannot be won because New Zealand took too much time to bat themselves.

From my understanding, Pakistan is in a really odd position in this test match. New Zealand took a lot of time to bat, and it gives us the opportunity to draw this test match. One thing we failed to consider was the fact that tomorrow, it is projected to rain with overcast conditions. New Zealand has preserved the ball so far, and it will swing a lot tomorrow.

Moving on, our bowling in this innings could have been much better had catches been taken and if on-field decisions been taken correctly. However, I am extremely concerned and disappointed with the performance of Naseem Shah. Whoever is still supporting him after his poor bowling displays overseas needs to get their bearing right, he is not fit enough to be bowling in these conditions and has no merit to his selection. He has been a free ticket for runs for New Zealand, who made a mockery of his bowling. This has to be his last test match, he is not even bowling quickly.

On our batting, we need to make some technical changes to our openers. Abid Ali needs to stop flirting with balls outside the off stump, and Shan Masood needs to stop edging balls down the leg-side.

Tomorrow will be the toughest day of this test match, Pakistani batsmen will have to be on their toes and hunker down and defend everything. I don't care if that means going at a RR of 1.5, it doesn't matter. If New Zealand can spend two days batting, then we should do the same. This test match could have been won if we had batted most of Day 2, but with the incoming weather changes, it seems very unlikely. We need to draw the match and not take risks to try and win from an almost impossible situation.

For the next test match, we need to bench Naseem and bring in Amad Butt because frankly, I'd rather have someone who has the domestic merit to bowl than some 17 year-old wonderkid who has no sense of bowling.

Ammad Butt the savior or is it suhail khan ..there is not much to pick is there. What we need is out and out fast bowlers..

"I am a spinner and NZ conditions are not suitable for my style of bowling on Day 1 and 2, so I was supporting the fast-bowlers in the 1st innings and I got success in doing that"

"I enjoy bowling to good players, and although there was no spin on offer, he did play well"

"New Zealand played well as they made some good partnerships, our bowlers didnt disappoint - they got wickets with the new ball but then we had a good innings by KW"

Could draw this if they bat sensibly and according to the conditions.

That was bad luck for Shan, terrible way to get out.

Then Pakistan should bat at 1.5 runs per over. Conditions seems okay for batting and surviving is not impossible. Pakistan must waste as much time as possible. Even though i acknowledge that any delivery can have your name written on it. As of now, even a draw looks highly unlikely.

I think such deliveries are pretty much part of the plan these days and not accidentally bowled.

Now I think it was a good decision by Pak to bowl first.

Two days have been played and NZ still need 19 Pakistani wickets to win the test. The wicket is pretty good to bat on and day 3 is usually the best day for the willow wielders. If Pak top order show some application, they can get away with a draw here.

Azhar, fawad and haris are all snail like plodders. So if they do that for next 2 days we may get away with a drawn match here.

NZ have taken out too much time in this Test and also not the 600 runs they would have liked

Those saying NZ took a long time to bat are forgetting there are 3 whole days left. Easy enough for Pakistan to collapse like a lot of teams do on NZ.

I agree with sentiments on Naseem. Unless he can bring his Pace back and ultimately take wickets, I have to question his role in the team.

Just bat and bat. No excuses with conditions easing out. Aim for 1st innings parity and hopefully we can induce a NZ collapse in 2nd innings.

we'll see what rizwan is made out of because as a batsman he is useless

Am not complaining if they if the bat like that here. They need to put a high price on there wickets and graft hard here.

That would be nice, tire there bowlers is the way to go. Someone in pak side needs to make a century and in the current 11 no one is capable in NZ.

The worrying sign is our batsmen do tend to sruggle in these conditions. The wicket however should be at its best for batting on day 3 so there cant be excuses for not scoring runs.

They need to learn and observe from what Williamson and Co did. The only challenging part about NZ is the first hour in my opinion and then it sort of meanders off and favours the batting side.

New Zealand left-arm seamer Neil Wagner will undergo an X-ray after being struck on the right foot while batting in the ongoing Test against Pakistan at Mount Maunganui.

Neil Wagner was hit during the third session of the second day’s play. He was checked by the physio and given medication.

The plot thickens.

I’m pretty hopeful... hoping against hope. :)

The general thought process is see out the first hour and then you should be good. Day 3 is usually a good day for batting as is most of day 4.

Exactly. I reckon Abbas will blunt the new ball :)) and after that Azhar and co. can capitalize...

The weather is not in our favor, as overcast conditions make batting in NZ extremely difficult, and with the nature of Abid Ali to slash at everything and Azhar Ali's weakness to the one that swings back into the pads.

The best way is to defend everything for the first session and look to draw this test match, because New Zealand batted for two days at relatively slow pace because they thought that they could bowl us out. If we can handle the pressure and take minimal risks, we can draw the match and take it to a decider, where we might have the long-awaited services of Babar Azam as well. Then, we can try to take the series.

Batting sensibly is the most important part. Abbas should not try to get out early, as we need him to just defend everything and blunt the new ball. It doesn't matter if he's 10 from 99, we just need to get rid of the shine because the overcast condition. This will allow our middle order to get maximum profit from the pitch and also score runs and last the conditions without losing wickets, because when the second new ball comes, we need as many wickets as possible to at least score around 400.

Looking at the second match, Naseem should be dropped for Amad Butt. If it's a flat pitch, I might be tempted to play Wahab Riaz as an express pacer, but I don't like the move too much because he hasn't had any game time in recent times. Should have had another quick like Shinwari on the tour.

The aim should be to bat 5 sessions. Maybe 6 if you are made of steel.

It won’t happen though I reckon, but greater miracles have happened in this beautiful game

Exactly my thought hopefully that’s the message he gets. It’s that first hour and then you are golden.

One more thought is the fact that if we are playing in overcast conditions, our batting looks really weak from that perspective.

Abid, Azhar, Fawad, Haris, Rizwan, Faheem are the only people who I think are capable of batting.

The likes of Yasir, Shaheen, Naseem, and Abbas will just have to play supportive roles and block every ball.

It looks like a draw to me, most balls faced by Pakistani Batsman came from the middle of the bat and Southee/Boult couldn't bring the ball in which could have caused serious problems.

First innings Pakistan scores 290 +- , Nwz starts innings with 150ish odd runs and a total of 450 runs to be chased.

Fully agree with you. Naseem needs to get dropped so that he can analyze his game and take a break...

As you said Abbas needs to blunt the new ball and hopefully our other batsmen will apply themselves to make a game out of it!

Absolutely! Let’s see what Pakistan is capable of.
