[VIDEO] Rishabh Pant - The next big thing from India?

Where did I say KL Rahul doesn't have talent? I wanted KL Rahul to be dropped so that he gets a kick on his backside and comeback as a better player. I wanted that to happen after the england tour but it seems we are hell bent on carrying him to every tour. His ODI form has also suffered due to that.

Ok fair enough. Then we have no disagreements .

Shahid Afridi has 5 centuries in test cricket. And people used to call him a tullaybaaz too. :inti

Perfect and i saw the highlights of Day 02 seeing him bat and he may not have been pleasing to the eye but got his team into a wonderful position to win the match plus the series...

In Australia, Risabh Pant amassed 350 runs in seven innings, the second highest after Cheteshwar Pujara, while behind the stumps he broke the record for most catches -- 20 -- by an Indian wicket keeper in a Test series.

Amazing stuff!

Congrats to Pant. What a phenomenal debut year he's had.

Rishabh Pant is a freelance cricketer. He does not play to the mediocrities of Test cricket. Every ball is an opportunity to hit four. And that is why he averages 50 at the age of 21.

Along with Gill and Shaw, he is the future of India.

He is 21 and has age on his side to improve his wicket-keeping skill but he is someone good enough to walk into most teams as specialist batsmen only. After 2019 WC, he will take the mantle in ODIs as well.

Too good to fail in limited overs.

It is a shame that he is not getting a look. Ideally Shaw, Gill, Pant all are better choices than the current bunch.I would even include Agarwal. We are not even talking about KL Rahul here

With Kohli and Rohit continuing in WC 2023, I see a top 5 for India as: -

Shaw
Rohit
Kohli
Gill
Pant(wkt)

Pant could be well the factor that elevates this team to an ATG team over the next decade. Like how Gilchrist was absolutely vital for Aussies becoming an ATG team in the 2000s.

Hopefully he keeps his head level and work relentlessly on improving his keeping and batting skills and not get carried away.

Thats a very solid top 5.

We need a good batsman who can roll his arm ala Jadhav at 6.

Then an pace bowling AR at 7. Followed by Kuldeep, Chahal, Bumrah, Shami/Bhuvi.

A solid team

There is a guy called abhishek Sharma who happens to bowl left arm spin and is a very good fielder not to forget he is A very explosive bat as well also Shivam dubey is doing good as far as pace bowling all-rounder is concerned

By 2023, there won't be Jadhav. So, India will have to find someone playing that role. Pandya, Kuldeep, Chahal and Bumrah are all young and if they maintain the form, we might see all of them over the years.

Yup, that's the key. Those 4 are excellent making us one of the strongest bowling line ups in cricket. If we could get another amazing bowler - an upgrade on Bhuvi and Shami, and a batting AR who can reliably bowl 4-5 overs of spin (and even 10 on the odd occasion, ala Sachin/Sehwag/Raina) we would be the best bowling attack in the world.

Don't get me wrong, you really don't have a history of producing such bowlers. India never had such a bowler and it is really ambitious that you anticipate as such.

T20 Career so far:
10 innings, 161 runs, Avg: 17.88 (that includes 58 runs against depleted WI side), S/R: 111.... But but but Indian mafia and Dhoni are keeping him away and not giving him enough chances! :)))

I would like to see him in WC 19 squad too, but a risky investment with his hackathon and brainless switch hits and reverse sweeps! He is simply not ready yet!

What a brainless post.

People want him in ODI squad and you are having T20 numbers.. ideally he should have been groomed after the 2017 CT.. Kohli made his debut in 2008 I think but it took him 5-6 years to be the freak he is.. Pant should have been a permanent fixture in ODI and groomed like Kohli was till the 2019 WC in those 2 years he would have gained confidence..

He is 21 of course he will get out in stupid ways that's how it goes.. This is the reason you need to groom these kids, end of the day they are still young kids and need guidance from the top coaches and brains in the world.. 2-3 years being in dressing dressing room with Kohli and watching him and following him will only improve his game..

He is not ready because he didn't get consistent run, anyways now it's too late Dhoni will play the WC along with kartick, rayudu and jadhav.. Let's hope in knockouts we never get to a stage that we have to rely on any of the. For the win.

He's performed in tests and people are talking about his T20 numbers. :))) :)))

Some people take T20s way too seriously.

Yeah we are now at a stage where you can be fully ready for test matches but you need to be ready for T20s & ODIs lol... BTW are you a Pakistani fan ? your post pretty much highlights why your test side has yet to unearth a world class batsmen in god knows how long...

Dhoni fans:- Pant is a hack known only for his brainless switch hits and reverse sweeps.
He walks into test with this quality but not into LO team, lol.

I'm a fan of good cricket and Pant is a certified hack in LOIs no matter what his performance suggests in Test cricket. He's done nothing noteworthy in LOIs so far except that 53 against WI C attack. You fans go all guns blazing and I shall join the party once he starts contributing to the Team and wins matches in LOIs, until that his belly dance moves at the crease mean nothing to me with no performance!

LOL, he has played 2 innings in ODI cricket. Nor will he be a regular member of the ODI side till Dhoni retires, which will probably be after this World Cup.

As for T20 cricket, take it as you please. Most fans don't even care for the format except World T20 tournaments.

His backlift is very interesting. I imagine it must be hard for him to play towards fine leg or sweep the ball.

India is a chasing team. How confident are you that Pant will score a run a ball 40 during a chase and not try a switch hit against a pace bowler in his first over. That's where the problem lies. This is not the test batsmen we saw in Australia. In that series we saw a Pant who left good balls, played good strokes and smashed a few that are in his zone. Where is that guy? The 10 balls he faced in NZ was a copy of what he did in Nidahas. Trying to whack everything with cringeworthy shots without even looking at the ball.

If Rishabh Pant succeeds as an opener, it would be great: Sunil Gavaskar

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has backed the idea first suggested by Shane Warne that India can try out opening with Rishabh Pant alongside Rohit Sharma.

“Yes, why not. If you open with Rishabh Pant, it opens up a third option for you as well. If he does well at the top, he is someone who can also be played in the middle order,” Gavaskar told India Today on Thursday.

Australia spin great Warne was the first to throw up the idea and explained that it the X-factor might just work.

“I can’t see why Rishabh Pant can’t play as a batsman. He is outstanding. Maybe even open the batting with Rohit Sharma. I know Shikhar Dhawan does a great job but Rishabh Pant opening the batting with Rohit Sharma could be pretty cool too for India. Go with some of these X-factor type things and tactical battles where you surprise the opposition,” Warne had said.

“It could be worth throwing Rishabh Pant at the top of the order for a couple of games and see how he goes. Maybe against Australia now (upcoming series) and experiment and see how he goes for the World Cup. Dhawan may have a role to play somewhere else. But I am really looking forward to seeing what India have because they have a lot of players who can do a lot of roles.”

While Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan have been one of India’s most successful opening pairs, the southpaw has registered only cameos off late with a big innings still eluding him.

“Pant is a left hander as well. It’s important to have a left-right combination going because it does make the bowlers’ task that much more difficult. That’s why Rohit-Dhawan have been so successful. So have Sachin-Ganguly and Sehwag-Ganguly in the past. So, if Pant succeeds as an opener, that’s great for your side,” Gavaskar explained.

The selection committee will meet in Mumbai on Friday to pick the squad for the limited-overs series against Australia and Pant’s could be zeroed in as an opener.

Gavaskar, a terrible analyst, a useless ODI batsman in his time, the inventor of loser phrases like "peaking early", "smart batting is taking a single after a boundary", "oh no, he missed his fifty", "he's unlucky to have missed a hundred" even though the team is losing badly, is lobbying for Pant to replace another Delhi player Dhawan so that Pant doesn't replace any current or future Mumbai players. Dhawan is clutch and is a much much better player than Pant.

77* (26) vs Mumbai tonight!

He’d gone berserk. What a knock!

Outrageously gifted player. He will leave Dhoni behind with the bat.

India’s Gilchrist has arrived.

Hahaha! Pant is an IPL bully! This hack is not even fit to tie the shoelaces of Dinesh Karthik and you are talking about Dhoni! Funny! Let him play atleast one impactful knock in LOIs for the national side before hyping him to the moon!

I used to think after Yuvraj India didn’t produce a hitter of the level of him, Maxwell, Anderson, Russel etc.

But I think in Pandya and Pant we have two very good hitters now.

Need to start doing this in international games now.

Pants been terrific in test cricket.

Meh! Surely can't best our own WK - the most clutch and best finisher in Pakistan, M. Rizwan.

Yea, 2 Test centuries at the age of 20 (when he scored them), 1 in Australia and 1 in England. That too in a grand total of 15 Test innings so far.

What a bloody hack!

How many asian WK have a century in Aus and Eng?

This guy is such an audacious batsman. He is trying to reverse sweep Bumrah against his regular balls nonchalantly.

What happened? Did Pant score an ODI century against Australia today? Have we won the series now? If yes, hopefully that is it for Dhoni. :inti

He hacked his way to 78 against an IPL team and people bringing up the usual gibberish about his test performances! Nobody is denying his test perofmrnaces here! This hack has done absolutely nothing in the T20s and ODIs for Team INDIA and his IPL performances mean nothing if he's going to hack his way around for quick 20s and 30s only to get out by playing some ugly shots without grabbing the opportunities! Absolute waste of 1 valuable spot if Kohli takes him to WC! I would rather have Vijay Shankar because he adds more value with his overall performance!

It is funny his test centuries are brought into discussion whenever his LOI performances are discussed. As I said, there are no one to compete with his test spot currently but in LOI's there is Dhoni. His time will come after the world cup. People will miss Dhoni and his captaincy. I am 100% sure.

And Vijay Shankar isn't going anywhere. He has been impressive. :inti

Many Pant haters here try to discard him by calling him a "hack". However, they fail to provide any answer to the simple question as to how come a hack has already got a test hundred in England and Australia at age of 21 while the greatest wkt-keeper batsmen to come from Asia has none in those two countries or even in SA for that matter.

Let us simply accept it, he is going to be one of the next big thing in the world cricket and he has showed the glimpses at such a young age already. He will do well in tests but his game is perfectly suited to LOs and it's only a matter of time before he not only cements his place in Indian odi side but also establishes as a big dog in that playing XI.

The people who are calling him hack are the one who called MS Dhoni a hack way back when he scored that 148* vs Pakistan. Pant, in contrast, is a lot more gifted and has age with his side as well.

The only thing he needs to work on is his wicket-keeping.

I like how some of you guys call him the next big thing. Pandya was also supposed to be the next big thing but he has not lived upto expectations yet or has he? And then there are hardworkers like Vijay Shankar who give it their all but fans still want them out of Indian team. Ghor kalyug. :inti

Didin't the people on this forum and across Social Media already miss Dhoni during the last 2 ODIS seeing Kohli's brainless captiancy and Pant's impressive glove work?

While MSD is not going anywhere and I have accepted his spot as wkt-keeper batsmen (someone who will hold the inning at 4-5), Pant can walk into the Indian team as a specialist batsmen alone. He brings the much-needed hitting ability India needs in the middle order.

I will have Pant and Dhoni both in my XI.

Yes they were. Some of these same fans were also abusing Pant too. I criticised these players like Pant and Pandya but never crossed my line and abused them or their families. You just have to visit the match thread and read their posts.

For me, Pandya was never someone whom I would call the next big thing but still good enough to walk into the playing XI, particularly, because the role he brings in the ODI team.

He is perfect to have at no. 7 as a batsmen and while his bowling still requires work, he is the best all-rounder India have got, more so given his role suit exactly as per team requirement.

Pant, however, is perfectly suited to LOs and will be a brilliant wkt- batsmen for India in future(if he improves his wkt-keeping though).

I agree. Pant needs to be there to play the finisher role if India want a better chance.

If Kuldeep and Chahal don't go for runs then India should win, but that is a massive factor

He is good and all but it has to be said that he's always performed in ipl matches so nothing new has happened today. His odi career still has a question mark to it

Needs to improve wicket-keeping. With shorter height a wicket keeper must never have a wrong foot movement. Maybe he will learn it when plays more and more.

Having batted in 4 ODI innings so far?

He hasn't played in ODI much. He could be used as a wild card by India. He could take away the game in 5 or 6 overs.

It is funny he is classified as a hack even after scoring those centuries in Tests on foreign soil.

You can't be a hack in just one format. Either you are a hack across all formats or you aren't.

If a Pakistani 20 year old WK had scored centuries in Australia and England and regularly smashed the daylights of bowlers in the PSL, people here would be talking about his ATG status. Threads would've already been created on where he ranks among the all time WK batsmen. Just remember this is the place where Shadab and Faheem are apparently world class.

Rishabh Pant is extraordinary. What a world class talent. At the moment he just needs to work hard on his WK. He's clearly a 100 Test and 300 ODI player.

This logic is stupid. Is MSD never going to retire? Will a new keeper never come? Will Kohli never be able to captain without Dhoni? Dhoni spoon feeding Kohli has prevented him growing as a captain completely. In tests he has at least shown some improvement. Also MSD was also a very average keeper when he was new like Pant but was shown a lot of support by the seniors and the management which allowed him to improve

Great batsmen don't mean they are great captains. Tendulkar already proved it by being one of the worst Indian captain ever.

Kohli is one of the worst captains in IPL history for the superstars-filled RCB. Sadly Dhoni is not a part of RCB to prevent him from growing into a champion-captain! Wonder who's talking about stupid logics here! :23:

Why are dhoni fans shouting as if he never lost an odi series.
Dhoni lost a series against Bangladesh of all teams.
4-0 in nz
Humiliated by sa in india etc etc.
Before kohli was appointed as captain dhoni was failing as captain.
Dhoni fans are the biggest hypocrites, kohli's captaincy can be judged by ipl but pant's batting shouldn't be judged by his performances in ipl.

Rishabh pant is the first choice test wk, second choice odi wk and dinesh karthik is not fit enough to polish his boots.
Over 150 matcges played and 0 centuries, dk is the prime example of mediocrity

Do u even remember that dhoni was failing as captain before kohli got appointed.
Secondly dinesh karthik is a mediocre cricketer who comes nowhere near pant.

Pandya is the first choice allrounder. Get used to it, Pandya's performances have been amazing but if u expect him to be kapil dev then its your problem.
