[VIDEO] Rishabh Pant - The next big thing from India?

32 runs off 29 balls. Woakes took a great catch. Hack or not he will score runs and that's what matters :msd
Unnecessary dive.. There's a fielder there for that shot and yet again he go for that shot.. As of now he's only good for 30 odd runs till he develop batting maturity and game awareness... And it's not bcs of international exposure, he's doing same mistake in IPL too..

He scored a 150 in Aus against Starc and Cummins. He is not troubled by bounce. :shhh

Shoaib Akthar says a lot of things. Only fools believe what he says :afridi

Well, only fools will listen to your crap as well.

An indian poster here raised issue of Pant being scared. What the hell was he scared of? My question was genuine. Was he afraid of being hit, was he afraid of going against orders of management? Awain hi uth key yarian marne na ajaya karo.

My response was a bit rude. I'm sorry

He bats a bit like Sharjeel Khan. Especially his leg side play.

First match in wc , he might have had nerves. I will stick with him for the rest of matches if pitches are even semi flat.

I don´t wish to sound harsh on a young kid based upon just one innings, but yesterday he reminded me so much of Awais Zia and uncle Rafatullah Mohmand - a couple of batsmen played by Pakistan in the past. All that they had was an ugly heave over mid-wicket - well, an attempted slog at least, irrespective of where it landed - sometimes even the cover fielder!

I hope that Pant has more shots in his book other than the heave over mid-wicket. I don´t one bit question that on his day he has single-handedly torn apart bowling attacks in the IPL. I hope he develops a good temperament and works on his game, because this Indian team has a serious dearth of hitters. All that they´ve is Hardik. International bowling attacks obviously have a lot more questions to ask than those dished up in the IPL. There, a team at most has one or a couple good bowlers and the rest of the 12 overs are often yours for the taking.

All in all, good luck to him!

Over hyped T20 specialist.

Should be nowhere near the ODI team

He is the next Yuvraj Singh in making.

People can say all they want but he is a massively talented player and should have been allowed to play atleast 15 ODI games before the World Cup.

He is exactly what India needs in the middle order in future. We can have lots of great openers in the team but we struggle to have many great middle order batsmen but Pant can be one. Have faith and confidence on him and he will come good.

Man, that is some hyperbole. You cant compare an ugly hack like this to Yuvraj, one of the most elegant left handers who showed what he is made of in his debut match in an ICC tournament against one of the best LOI sides ever. Pant couldn't even time his shots yday.
What has Pant done in ODIs to have this much hype? He has played like this from his first one-day itself. With such ugly hoicks against short-balls, bowlers will find him out just like Raina.

He should have been given more matches before World Cup. A blunder by Indian team management.

Pant and Dhoni together a perfect foil for India in the middle order.

Imagine if selectors and team management had groomed pant since 2017. He would have had 2 years to be ready for world cup and full on confidence. But no our selectors are corrupt and incompetent to the core.

Congratulations to Pant fans. He played well today. :inti

Yes and I think we need to invest in him as a player, he is young and positive hopefully will improve his weakness.
We should back him as well, always had doubts abt him but coming and directly playing two decent knocks, yesterday that catch was tremendous to get him out.

Bhai you expected them to groom a 19 year old Pant? Dhoni and other wicket keepers had to spent seasons after seasons to earn their place in the team. Only one who got chance immediately was Parthiv Patel and he didn't do well.

I like Rishabh! He is definitely the next big thing! Strong and confident!

They should have let dhoni in team but groomed pant. He was the only option. Everyone knew dhoni will be 37 on paper (he's from Jharkhand so extremely high possibility he's 40) won't be playing like earlier.

If Kohli needed a stabilizer and adviser in dhoni then atleast remove Shankar, jadhav, kartick, rayudu and groom a power hitter like pant or someone else. We can't play jadhav, dhoni, kartick, Shankar all in 1 team. Just need 1 of them.

There will be one match in this torunament where Kohli and Rohit will both fail and get out early and we will lose that match. If that match is semi or finals against Pakistan imagine the heartbreak in public :))

VIDEO] Rishabh Pant - The next big thing from India?

His shots came off today, didn't they? He's really so much fun to watch :)).

What I find amazing is that he can't play a single stroke whilst standing. He's always found on the floor after every shot. Love this kid! :))

A very good looking player when he's in touch.
His 150 vs aus was amazing.

Good thing about him is that he tried to improve from his Eng performance. His posture was relatively steady and he was consciously trying to control his impulsive nature, as such his shot selection was better than just kid wicket hoicks. If he can put his head in the right place he will be a good addition at 5 or 6. If Pandya and Pant can be grromed properly India's lower middle enforcement problem can be addressed. Both of them are not yet suited to bat at number 4 though unless India are already around 40 overs. We need good proper batsman at 4-5.

Rahul, Rohit, Kohli, Mayank, Pant, pandya, Dhoni should be our batting lineup

The future batting lineup would look something like this!

Rohit
Dhawan
Shaw
Kohli
Gill
Pant
Pandya
Bhuvaneshwar
Kuldeep
Bumrah
Chahal

I think Kohli may develop some confidence with Shaw and will be happy to give up his No.3 to him (like he tried to do with useless Rahul) Kohli can still be effective at No.4 because he can cut down all the aerial shots (which led to his dismissals in the World Cup so far!) he is so good in ground shots & piercing gaps! (That's how he became so consistent & famous!) He is not someone who likes to hit sixes (Rohit is good at that!) I think Kohli is the man for No.4, our batting order may look rock solid with that! Shaw can then move up to opening once Dhawan/Rohit phases out (I think Dhawan may first go in next 2-3 years!) Gill can then move to No.3, so we should keep looking for other prospects! It is the batting which is the worry at the moment, we will continue to get good bowlers (Also we should not stick to same bowlers always! Like playing both Kuldeep/Chahal should not be a must for each match/pitch and against every opponent!)

If developed properly, he's good enough to play as a pure batter. Has the potential to be a star. If at all he has to keep wickets, it should only be in one format. No need to burden him in multiple formats.

Gotta love Waz. :wa

Wont be this much change. Shaw will be backup opener.

After WC, I expect:-

Rohit
Dhawan
Kohli
Gill
Pant
_____( an all-rounder probably)
Pandya
Bhuvi/Shami
Kul
Cha
Bumrah

Gill also won't do much batting so low. 4 is max for him.

I will need Agarwal in the mix as well. That guy deserves a chance in 11 even before Shaw and Gill. Infact I will push Rohit to 3 , Kohli to 4 and keep the remaining same as yours. Will open with Dhawan and Mayank with Shaw also rotated around. Will like to phase Bhuvaneswar and get somebody who strike rate is better both in terms of ball and bat.

Not suddenly, but gradually! Also Shaw as backup opener? (When he is already almost cemented in Tests!) He could turn out another Rahul... Better to include him in ODIs also as soon as possible! Sehwag even though was not so good in ODIs (compared to tests), still gave that balance to the side... We have seen how this backup concept doesn't work out if we bring new players in suddenly! If an opener is injured suddenly then No.3 should be ready to take up the role (usually only one opener will be injured/unavailable! Unless when both are rested in insignificant matches/tours!) and rest of the batting order should be pushed up accordingly! Kohli is already vulnerable at No.3 when he tries to forcefully play aerial shots, so he should never open (we saw that in IPL!) Even Gill, let him start playing at No.5, then we can push him at the top! As I said it should be a gradual process, otherwise we will once again mess up like we did in the preparation leading to this world cup with so many passengers!

Yeah I forgot about Agarwal... But Rohit may not be needed to push down when he is this good form! Even I felt the same a couple of years back when he was taking a lot of time to settle and then give up his wicket leading to inconsistency and only occasional monstrous innings! But now he seems to be very consistent and also not too slow at the start as we are seeing in this world cup! He has improved a lot, if he can play like this in world cup with variety of opponents, pitches & pressure, then he will be even more lethal in bilaterals! He is a must at top & even Dhawan... But as we both think we should judicially handle this backup opener concept (the backup opener should already be playing in the regular team at No.3 only then he can play at least upto 75% of the regular openers!)

Hitman is the coolest guy in the cricket world right now in the field and off the field :yk

Hopefully this will be the first of 4 or 5 world cups for Pant.

Hope so.

He’s a good kid.

I’m more excited about his test prospects.

Could India finally have a test wicket keeper of Gilchrist caliber batting ability at 7. He could be.

Looks a decent batsman.

He'll get better, but still has a lot to learn.

Lousy shot today, no need to play it.

Looked like a complete hack against England.

Let’s see how he develops after Dhoni retires.

I have some questions to Indian team management and Rishabh Pant's critics.

Why was Rishabh Pant not backed at all before the World Cup in ODI formats?

And if he was not backed before the WC, what exactly made them bring back a 5-match experienced 21 yrs old guy into the team all of a sudden into high pressure WC game vs England?

And today, given the guy was young and inexperienced, why did not the experienced guys came to bat earlier and took the responsibility rather than sending a hitter like Rishabh Pant to do the consolidation part for his team?

India could have easily send Karthik and Dhoni at 4 and 5 and if Dhoni would have batted to his usual self, he would have done the consolidation part from the start and Pant/Pandya/Jadeja later on could come and hit it out.

Pant has played 8 ODIs, intermittently. He came in as a replacement player.

OTOH DK has played 91
Rahane 90
Jadhav has played 64
Rayudu has played 55
Shankar has played 12

Backing below avg players for 4 years cost India.

Pant should have been in the team last year itself. If he is the main WK for test team, how can he be not the back up for Dhoni in ODIs? How can DK be ahead of him?

He is another Umar Akmal in the making. Will throw his wicket after getting cute 30-40 runs. Should bat at 7 these type of tullaybaazi looks good there. Gill or any other proper batsman should be given a chance at 4 now. :inti

I saw his test hundred against England, looked a very calm and technically sound player. I dont know why people are calling him a hack, even against NZ he wasnt troubled by extra pace and zip. Had the presence of mind to play his shots despite of early wickets.

his dismissal was disappointing but for a 21 year old playing his only 8th ODI, it should not be end of the road for him. His best years are ahead of him.

He was the one who should have been backed by team management after CT '17 debacle. By now, 25 ODI matches would have been a good enough experience for him.

You become a complete batsmen by experience, nobody becomes one as such with 5 ODI experience. He should be batting from around 30 overs, this is where he would be exploited the best possible.Pandya will be best exploited after 35 overs. I really don't understand why these two were sent higher. It was a mistake really, it's done now but this costed us the game today.

Our pakistani posters called him a tullaybaaz hack etc after his first couple of tests.

He replied by scoring a century vs Anderson and Board in England and then a unbeaten 159 againist Starc Cummins and Hazlewood in Sydney.

Now the same one are back calling him a hack tullaybaaz etc again. I can only laugh at their ignorance and sympathise with the pain that Pant causes them.

I disagree. Pandya hasn't been very useful with the bat down the order because he had to strike from ball one but when sent up in this World Cup, he played some good knocks that kept the run rate up in the middle overs which would not have been the case if Dhoni was batting at that position. Sending him up the order gave him time to settle in before going for the big shots, and even while he did that, he still scored at a good clip.

One of the biggest hack I have ever seen.He would find it difficult against international bowlers. His balance is awful for an international batsman.he fells almost every time when he plays a shot.

You are showing signs of desperation by bringing in his test centuries during the month of World Cup. Drink some thanda paani and relax joshila jee. :inti

He will be successful for India.

He has it in him to succeed in this era. Will win India a lot of games. He was looking really calm out there under pressure yesterday while others were hopping at the crease.

Two problems that he should work on:

1) static feet make him play away from body.

2) need to understand when to play the big shots. This will come with experience. He is just 21 years and 8 ODIs old.

He should have been given more games before the world cup. Dhoni's presence made it difficult for him to be ready for WC.

Having said that, he played a criminal shot yesterday at that time. I think Damien Martyn was dropped for 6 years when he played 1 bad shot as a 21 year old in 1994 which made Australia lose a test match. Such is the ruthlessness of Aussies.

So Anderson Board Cummins Starc Hazlewood Lyon etc are not international bowlers?

The big question is whether he will be able to put his head in the right place in the long run and convert potential into gritty performances or just stick to the swag factor which by the way will earn him more contracts, talk shows and definitely fans within and without PP.

That smile after getting out while hitting against the wind flow does say a lot about his current level of sanity. And unfortunately for him Sastry and Kohli does not look to be the best mentors available around.

Yuvraj's response.

KP is right... He's played enough IPL matches but even there he shows same mistake and cost at least 6 matches last IPL, exactly reason why isn't in the first squad..

Playing him as a specialist batsman and that too at number 4 was a big mistake. Players like him never learn. They will score these 30-40 runs and will look for a glory shot and get out. Umar Akmal is the perfect example of this. :inti

Got to cut this lad some slack.

He's a young man, thrown into a situation which was probably too big for him.

The bigger players failed, others got their tactics wrong and it was left to the likes of Pant to pick up the pieces.

really well put ... watching him did remind me of Umar Akmal... too muuch talk, few good shots , low mental strength and gone when it started looking good..

No need to blame pant, comes in at 5-3.Tried his best.
He has just been played 7 ODI matches before this.Half of those he didn't get chance to bat or batted lower down order.Suddenly u put him at 4 in a world cup.**** kohli-bewda-dhoni.

Well you cannot expect that much from Pant to be honest (To play as a specialist batsman and that too at No.4, and that too in WORLD CUP! Making a debut in World Cup - Debut it is --- ODI Debut! How foolish this can be!) This shows the utter foolishness of management and how they selected their squad! Pant should have played as reserve wicket-keeper if Dhoni was injured (I don't think Dhoni could be dropped!), otherwise don't play him,as simple as that! In fact we (whom the other party thinks are blind fans of Pant & co) wanted Pant to be selected as WK/Batsman only! At the most should bat at No.6 or No.7. We did not ask for him to be selected as No.4 specialist batsman! I can remember only Gilchrist and Sanga to be such premier TOP order wicket keeper batsmen! Even Dhoni could not continue at No.4... Kaluvitharana (and other such fellows) did open the innings, but they either didn't last long enough OR they just contributed to a scheme of plan (In 1996 - Pinch hitting & taking advantage of power play was a new thing! And Sri Lanka had such a strong middle order really ATG materials who peaked at the right stage, so he fell in to that plan)

Once Dhawan calls it a day, I would open with Pant. He looked very good yesterday, tad unlucky... So much talent and potential.. :inti

Quite a few people here who have started watching cricket post 2000. Probably they are even born around that time.

Pant this.. Pant that.

That smile after getting out was as irritating as that crying scene from Kambli in 1996. Some Indian cricket fans have a legacy in glorifying ineptness and underachievement. They get 30 out of 100 and feel proud about it. That's the benchmark for success in our society that's reflected in fans where they are comfortable with a semifinal berth in 10 team tourney. If somebody highlights that and asks for improvements, then those optimists living in dreamland start crying against pessimism.

Please let him be somebody first and don't eat his head before that.

Video of Kohli getting angry on Shastri being circulated online...

I don't know if anyone has seen it, but I managed to catch a glimpse of it when it was doing the rounds on Twitter. I think it has been removed from most sources and I couldn't find a working link to post here...

Immediately after Pant got out attempting an ugly slog against NZ, Kohli could be seen fuming and leaving his dressing room to confront Shastri in the balcony. While no one could make out what Kohli was saying since his back was turned to the camera, he looked extremely agitated. This is not the first time Pant had given away a good start in the WC playing a stupid shot..

My guess is that Kohli wanted Rayudu to be included in the squad while Shastri insisted on Pant, and seeing the final outcome Kohli did not hesitate to give Shastri a verbal dose.

Anyway, all does not look well in the Indian dressing room.

Rishabh Pant - The next big thing from India?

He doesn't have the worst technique in the world, quite against my expectations to be honest. He played a couple of beautiful square or cover drives in the semi-final. He's quite solid I feel. The problem begins when he chooses to go for his mindless and rather ugly slogging. The wheels suddenly come off the moment he does that, and begins to look like a completely different batsman all of a sudden.

Can we please have a video of it?

If what you're saying is true, then what are the chances that the anger or the heated exchange in this case wasn't about Kohli not wanting to bat Pant at number four?

I say this because even Rohit took a cold dig at the media in the press conference after the loss over England, about them all in unison demanding for Pant to bat at four. Of course Rohit covered it up nicely in the words that that followed to avoid headlines on his comment, but it was still quite strange on Rohit`s part.

Pant seems like a good prospect. He has an unorthodox technique but he manages to play good shots.
