[VIDEOS] Azam Khan - Performance Watch

Looks like one good inning he played was a fluke or pure luck, since then he is showing his true colors. He is not of first class standard let aside of International standard, even with poor standard of batting in Pakistan.

I did not see much difference in his weight from previous year, even if he has lost some, he is way to too over wt to be considered for any serious sport. He is playing , thanks to his dad.

That's why form is temporary and class is permanent. No wonder his father doesn't let him play domestics.

And people wanted him to go to the T20 WC :))

Wait his father doesn't let him play domestics how will this man grow as a cricketer??? WHAT!!! 🤔

Because he will inevitably fail in domestic. Right now Moin Khan can hide behind the emerging tag and put his kid in the team. But if he played in domestic, and predictably fails, then people will attack Moin for including him in the squad with a bad record in domestic.

hmm devious thinking

Can't play domestics, he is not fit enough to play first class or even list A cricket.

People slatting azam khan but he has 2 match winnings performance he will be back in next game

Looks incapable of playing spin, catching practice today for opposition

So now time to assess him after the end of PSL5:

150 runs
9 innings
Average 18.75

Legendary numbers.

He needs to get a lot fitter and needs to play domestic games

He’s pretty rubbish in the field and really is a below par batsman. Started well with a 50 followed by a good 40 odd score and then flopped.

Batters to consider in this tournament:

Sohail Akhtar
Haider Ali
Umar Amin
Rohail Nazir
Sharjeel Khan

I don't get why he and Shehzad were automatic picks and couldn't be dropped barring a couple of games for Shehzad.

Haider Ali is good find. Sharjeel need to work on this fitness but should be selected for T-20 team. Rest are not ready for National T-20 team.

He has some talent but too raw at the moment. Need to lose weight and play domestic cricket regularly.

All this comparison with Gayle is rubbish. At best, he can be a T-20 mercenary if he improves his fitness.

Let's see where he stands after 2 first class and List A seasons.

Before those 2 seasons, there should be NO talk of fast-tracking him into the national team.

I am sure you will fully support it if Misbah does it anyway.

I'm not sure if its justified to call him one of the find's of this PSL, but clearly someone with potential who should be playing more domestic cricket.

He exceeded the very low expectations, but wasn't all that impressive overall.

Performances fell off as the PSL went on. I like his temperament at the crease, very calm batsman, but he needs to perform in FC and rack up the runs to even be considered for selection.

What i find astonishing is How can someone with zero domestic experience find himself playing a full set of psl games?

Based on what criteria was he picked apart from being the son of moin khan?

Only criteria.....he is Moin Khan's son and Moin Khan is well-in with the owner.

I dont mind such an approach as long as the individual has world class talent. Azam Khan was picked for his big hitting skills and he showed that in 2 games. Just needs to get fitter and play domestic cricket.

Sarfraz deserves equal blame. As the captain, he should have raised his voice over Azam's consistent selection. Looks like he is as big a Yes man as Azhar.

How can some one have world class talent but not played any domestics It doesnt make sense to pick him at all

Surely he shouldve got fitter and gained domestic exp before playing PSL games Thats the way things usually work in cricket And not after...

Azam isn’t the only one that was picked out of nowhere. Haris Rauf, Shadab, Ibtisam Sheikh, Umar Khan, the list goes on and on. None of these players played a full domestic season

The Yes sir culture is big at Quetta Gladiators. If you speak up and voice an opinion, you are removed from your role.

Any example of someone who has been removed from Quetta Gladiators?

He needs to lose weight and work on his fitness. It is too early to say if he is any good.He needs to play first class cricket and if he is a top performer than he should be given a chance.

K Manzoor was held back so this humty dumty could play!! What a farce , doesn’t matter how gifted/talented he is he’s simply too heavy to play cricket at this level , QGs deserve what they got

Rakheem Cornwall for Pakistan? Could Azam ever make it to the Pakistan team (in any format)?

I think Azam Khan is what Pakistan cricket lacks from last 10-15 years, i.e., wicketkeeper batsman who can hit clean at will. Only thing that Azam Khan need to do is, improve his fitness and loose some weight.

Nothing is stopping him from doing that.

Also, he should prove himself in domestic cricket. That should be easy as his dad can get him into his team of choice, just like PSL.

Both Azam Khan and Muhammad Haris should be developed. Will be good to have a strong upcoming wicketkeeper batsman stock for LOI.

Rizwan has us covered in Tests with Rohail his backup (and Rohail can take ODI as well in subcontinental conditions).

Other two should be developed for clean hitting in SENA in T20 especially and ODI to some extent.

To contrast with Rakheem, they seem to be slightly different body types. Cornwall will always come across as 'fat' because he has a large frame, even if he does lose more weight. Azam on the other hand, absolutely could stand to lean out more and get more athletic in the process. Happy to be corrected on this by more knowledgeable posters than me!

The PSL signposted the lad' s ability, and as he said in interviews project the PSL, he actually did lose some weight ahead of the PSL.

The problem, as always, is that you can't hide players in the field in international cricket. Can Azam get his fitness, weight and Stamina to a point where he gets selected for a domestic or PSL side on merit?

I'd love for it to happen on merit.

He will always have that albatross of nepotism around his neck similar to Shan and Imam. He has to answer those accusations with domestic performances and clear, demonstrable hard work on his fitness.

That's when we talk about Azam for the Pakistan team

Agreed Azam khan needs to loose weight both him and Muhammed can be good in odis and t20s.

A major problem in Pakistan cricket at the moment is as soon as a player does well in a couple of PSL matches we go over the top about him.

These kids should be performing in first-class cricket before there is even a mention of international cricket.

PCB needs to devise policy whereby players with minimum x games of first class experience should only get to play PSL.

Too much hype around him. A lot of other players did just as well as him. He gets a lot of attention due to his father and his physique, nothing more.

Guy has some natural six hitting potential. If he can work on his game further along with fitness he can be decent.

Needs to work on his fitness if he does then he can play down the order as a finisher maybe as we dont have many finishers in the team

Made 55 of 28, its early days but he is probably one of the cleanest strikers in the domestic circuit.

Too many pundits criticizing the guy unnecessarily. He clearly has ability. His six against Musa was impressive. But he did mistime a few.

He really impressed me a lot. He is the Pakistani answer to the lower order hitter it needs. He can hit the sixes effortlessly. Northern side was having 5 bowlers all have played all are international class. Azam khan was treating them like Club level bowlers. He will be the find of tournament.

He is a middle order batsman, and not a lower order one. An ideal number 5 once he develops in a year or two.

55 off 27. Looked a level above the other Sindh batsmen.

Think we need to calm down We need more than a handful of innings before we throw someones name around for the national team

Too many posters here rush to judgement based on one innings

Hes not proved anything so far Let him develop

As we dont have hitters in the middle order or WK/Batsman suited to both ODI and T20 cricket, he needs to be looked at seriously. He needs to be playing FC and he needs to be batting at 6.

Who is the Urdu commentator who speaks in an American accent?

Well we also had people dismiss him before he even played a single innings.

Lets just stop with all these knee jerk reactions in general?

Looked fantastic today, very easy on the eye. Started off with a cover drive them strokes all around the ground, whether off, in the v, or on leg. None of his shots looked like hacks. He has some genuine muscle power and there was a poster above comparing him to Caribbean batsmen, the reason is very few Pakistani cricketers (or other nations too) have ever had exceedingly big bodies other than Inzi, and therefore big Caribbean six-hitters come to mind first.

The fact is that Azam has lost 32 kg while Sharjeel doesn’t look much improved in the same timespan. This indicates that Azam is a hard worker, Shehzar Mohammad is a class trainer, and he is aspiring to be a better version of himself - he realizes he will not be selected unless he puts in the hard yards NOW at this tender age.

I hope he keeps working hard, can be a useful middle-order LOI option in 2-3 years if he maintains the upward trajectory.

I remember when he was picked up by QG the first time, everyone was making fun of him for obvious reasons, in fact in one of the Geo super shows, the sports reporters were making fun of the selection and criticizing him for obvious reasons ie his weight, the fact he was moin Khan's son and a nepotistic selection but one cricketer who was close to moin Khan and had seen Azam bat told them not to judge him by his appearance and that the kid was a fearsome striker of the ball and someone who could answer Pakistan's powerhitting issues down the line if groomed properly

The guy is enrolled in one of the top elite gyms in Karachi in Seaview and is working very hard to improve his fitness. He has already shed a lot of body fat and will hopefully keep working hard on this. I wish Sharjeel had the same drive

I am glad Azam is playing domestic cricket and he should continue putting in the hard yards

Fair play to him for putting in the effort, but what is the point of bicep curls? What is that going to achieve for him?

Not to mention how bad his form is with his back doing half the work.

Can he take quick singles? I saw him refuse a sharp run and almost got Asad out!

He is pretty fast in between the wickets. We need to stop criticizing him becuase of the way he looks. He seems relatively quick in the field also. Has potential to get better. It is also well known that he is working very hard on his fitness. We need to give this guy a break. Too many pundits have already gotten many predictions wrong on this guy.

Very decent talent. Surprised at so many comments writing him off already. Let him develop. Glad he is getting opportunities in domestic and PSL. Looks a future talent.

Is he a wicket keeper or not???

134 runs in 6 innings with 1 fifty - isn't really that great if the truth be told.

He probably needs a big innings in this tournament in the remaining matches to raise his profile further.

I think he’s looked like the most promising lower order hitter among the younger prospects. Given that thats been an area of weakness in the national team for a while, he needs to be given as many opportunities as possible to grow his game. He should at least be around the A team setup for now as well as regular chances in domestic and PSL games.

Would he have got so much hype on here if he wasnt the son of moin khan?

Is name shouldnt even be up for discussion in the national team at the moment no matter how well he does

He still has a lot of weaknesses, partly against pace and good thinking bowlers.
Needs to improve his balance and technique further, but no doubt if he develops well then he will add another dimension to our team. I see him coming together in 2 years or so.

Very true.

Even the PCB hype machine are doing their best to make him look better than what he is.

I watched an interview of Moin Khan where he mentioned he is a hardworking T20 cricketer. I was wondering if academies in Pakistan have started to train upcoming cricketers in specific format early in their cricketing careers. I am asking because a cousin of mine in India in same age group is playing 3 day cricket only. T20 is only for some specific days.

Explains the difference in quality between an Indian and a Pakistani batsmen

If only that was the case in Pakistan where most young cricketers only dream about playing in the PSL and nothing else.

I cannot speak for everyone, but the only thing that would persuade me to put him in the national side would be if he was also keeping wicket. At the moment, Rohail Nazir looks a decent enough prospect so Azam Khan will not be in the reckoning for national selection yet.

I think people are getting excited about him because of the quality of the strokes he is playing. He is still learning, but looks to have very good potential.

thats pretty impressive if hes curling 60kg

He hit a six straight over the balcony today. Can we get the clip of that over here?

His innings today.

On the contrary, I think he would've been treated much fairer by some here if he wasn't the son of Moin Khan. If you remove the weight issue, he's actually a very good clean hitter of the ball, something rather rare in our cricket at the moment. I think people would've been quite excited about him if he wasn't Moin's son and was a bit leaner.

He wouldnt be playing these t20 tourneys or leagues if he wasnt moin khans son

You dont go straight from playing in the nets to playing psl and the national cup tourneys unless you have some nepotistic backing

How well do you know Azam?
He has been playing club cricket all his life and isn't someone who just got selected from a net.
What else is an upcoming cricketer supposed to do?

As far as his privilege of being Moin's son is concerned, well, go fight God then.
Is it Azam's fault that his dad has influence, owns an academy where he has been able to practice and play for free all his life?

As far as him getting opportunities are concerned, it is obvious he has talent and strikes out from the rest with his ability to time the ball, and above all; his power.

It is nature that has enabled him to start with an advantage, and it is also nature that has afforded him with ability.

You will probably allude to him being picked in rhe PSL before playing domestic cricket. Well, then what about guys like Dilbar and Haris Rauf who too never played domestic cricket before their PSL debuts? Heck, they hadn't even played hard ball cricket.

As far as his place in the Sindh squad is concerned, he makes it on merit and should actually be doing the keeping duties instead of his has-been captain who has no future and doesn't deserve his spot even in the domestic side anymore.

You should only start whining if Azam leapfrogs into the national side right now, when he isnt ready.
If that happens, I will be with you in calling his inclusion nepotistic. But until then, chill out and let the kid play.
