[VIDEOS] Azam Khan - Performance Watch

How well do you know Azam?
He has been playing club cricket all his life and isn’t someone who just got selected from a net.
What else is an upcoming cricketer supposed to do?

It’s incorrect to state that Azam has simply gone from playing in the nets to playing domestic cricket and PSL. He has played cricket at different age levels and has come through the structure, though of course, his father probably played a role at some point. (PCB wrongly has him listed as LHB instead of RHB.)

As far as his place in the Sindh squad is concerned, he makes it on merit and should actually be doing the keeping duties instead of his has-been captain who has no future and doesn't deserve his spot even in the domestic side anymore.

You should only start whining if Azam leapfrogs into the national side right now, when he isnt ready.
If that happens, I will be with you in calling his inclusion nepotistic. But until then, chill out and let the kid play.

This is exactly what i mean Based on a couple of innings now he should be keeping and playing over someone who only year back was the pakistan cricket captain in all formats

I ll highlight your last point chill n let the kid play Stop hyping him to the moon and let him earn his spurs like everyone else has to

I am shocked Moin Khan being a super fit cricketer for Pakistan allowed his son to baloon to such disgraceful levels

No, that was not exactly what you meant. You claimed that Azam has come right out of a net to play top level cricket when he hasnt as the post above elucidates.
I know it is convenient, but dont do that.

And the Pakistan captain whom you mentioned, was ousted due to his non performance and it was hoped that he would recover that by playing domestic cricket.

But it is very apparent that he is not scoring anything. A look at the PSL, and this tournament will serve as evidence for this claim.
How long is he going to be cushioned just because of his name?
Because of him, Azam is not being given the gloves.
If Sindh still want to retain him as a playing mascot, then atleast give Azam some games as a wicket keeper.

It will be better for Pakistan's future plans if a youngster with potential gets to hone his craft rather than a has been who's writing is on the wall, particularly in the shortest format.

And yeah, no one is hyping him to the moon. Just because someone said he has ability doesn't mean he is being overhyped.
As I said before; cut the hate and let him play.

He gets his motaapaa from his mother's genes.
But yes, his diet was also extremely crappy from what I have heard.

Hes a clean hitter of the ball if he can work on his fitnes hes got a bright future

To be honest he is good enough for Sindh side and even has the potential to play PSL on merit as well. I hope he continues to improve, another talented cricketer who get bashed because of influential father, having said that I dont think he is talented enough to represent Pakistan but then he is hard worker so we never knows , he is definitely more talented than shoaib malik.

I think he is talented enough the way he hits the ball only afridi used to hit like that and khusdhil has shown it a few times we need someone who can hit big from ball one but he does need to loose abit more weight

all he gotta do is keep doing heavy compound lifts with lots of focus on his core. For cardio, he should do lots of running, jump ropes and boxing.

Obviously he has gotta train his cricketing skills along the way.

27 off 14 today before running himself out.

Good little innings from him today before running himself out

He does desperately needs to lose at least a couple of stones Maybe he wouldve made his ground today if he wasnt carrying that excess weight

He ran pretty quickly, he just didn’t run in a straight line. Obviously needs to keep working on his fitness though.

He needs to lose fat only, not muscles. Look at Pollard, he is massive but it is all muscles. He shouldn't lose his natural strength.

He is not a guy that will make it as a batsman but I can see a good career as WK/bat. I don't know what his Wk is like but if he can become a 6 who can keep, then a place awaits in the T20 team and possibly the ODI team.

In a year or two, a place awaits in T20s anyway. We practically have no hitters in the T20 team, and I don't see any other promising young batsman who can clear the boundary with ease like him.

Should shed some pounds and improve his batting
I think he ll be ready by 2022 to join national team subject to his form and fitness

he's unfit. And is not international material yet. Would be an embarrassment to the green shirt to see him walking out for us. He needs to go on a better fitness program and get rid of the fat, stop eating junk food and take the game seriously.

Has he been keeping wickets of late?

Has anybody actually seen him keep? He might be god damn awful at it

Let him play for a couple of years, shed 20kgs and see where he is with his keeping and batting before his name gets thrown around for the national team

Was hitting the likes of Amir, Shadab and Imad as if they are school level bowlers. Love his confidence.

Pollard muscle ? Lol he’s fat it’s just his amazing athletic African genes that help him become a great athlete and he does a lot of acting to be fair on the field as well more antics than fielding

I think you dont Its 3 stone Hes clearly still more than overweight hes probably bordering in the obese category in terms of bmi

Great knock today Hope he manages to get fit and carries on his form in the meantime

The poster is correct Pollard is overweight n carrying more fat than he should You can clesrly see hes got a big belly on sideon pics

The only difference is he has the west african genes which with some gym work give him that athletc ability and big build n immense strength which he possesses

Most cricket athletes arent like pollard for a reason n thats genetics

he should keep hitting big runs but he must lose weight. he isnt an international athlete. Must work hard on his fitness. I cant see him lasting in the long version and his aim should be to play test cricket for Pakistan. If he can hit this big like his dad he should be as thin too..

My point is not everyone is suppose to have frame like Virat Kohli. Azam Khan is muscular, see his gym photos. He needs to lose fat percentage and be in better shape

This guy is s serious talent. He is so effortless while hitting those big shots. Gives those Inzi vibes while batting. To me his fitness though certainly not great shouldn't prevent him from getting selected in Pakistan team. He can be a genuine hard hitting match winner we have been missing. At the moment he also suffers from what Imam does, good things being overlooked in view of the nepotism angle.

Well he is working hard to improve himself, there is no doubt he will get more fitter. If he can keep then there is no better option than him in T20 cricket considering that alternatives are Rizwan and Sarfraz lol

The guy is a serious talent. He is actually relatively fast as well.

I don't know how good of a WK he is. But if he's any decent he slots right into. LOs international cricket for Pakistan.

He looks even more fitter than the last PSL he played. Good work

Today's knock was arguably against an international level attack too.

The kid has worked hard and is really making a claim for selection.

However....i don't want any compromises made for him, so there's no selection until he reaches a certain level of fitness.

Credit where it's due, it looks like he's been working on his fitness and has a few good scores so far. Good swing of the bat

Holds the record for most sixes in the tournament - 19 in 9 games.

3rd highest SR in the tournament of anyone who has played 60+ balls: 174 at an average of 32.

On TV, it doesn’t look as bad as it does on the video. But in most cases, you can’t see the number of balls next to the batsman’s score in the bottom graphic, so it’s pretty poor. PTV doesn’t have any HD output unfortunately.

I think he kept wicket in the ramadan cup and took an excellent catch vidoe is on YouTube

What if he passes the tests set by Pakistan but doesnt loose any weight?

Still remember people going at me when I said the kid shouldn’t be judged until he’s played a few games. The Pakistani tradition is to trash everything and everyone for any reason you can find before looking at it objectively.

He is working on fitness which is visible.....he is serious about his game and fitness and that's good......he is very good striker of the ball too.....so he is in ri8 track......needs more List A experience and first class too to develop his game further ..

Now he can be tried in t20s....but shouldnt be forced into it......also on the other hand u won't get a easy series like this that too at home so yes it won't be wrong if he is given a go.

Good luck 4 future

Lets be honest if he was serious about his cricket he wouldnt have let his weight get to the point it was

This boy deserve to be in T20 side against Zimbabwe so that we all come to know how good a keeper he is. We all know he is the cleanest hitter of the ball in Pakistan at the age of 22 which is remarkable. He has immense talent he was treating Shadab and Ammir like the club bowlers. If he can improve his fitness he Can improve his chances for elections immensely. He can bat at No. 5 to provide impetus to the inning.

Really it tells us how bad our fitness standards are that this guy is able to play domestic cricket despite being overweight.

Lol since when was supreme fitness a standard anywhere? India have Pant, Chawla, Sharma, Tiwary, Sarfaraz Khan and Prithvi Shaw and Amit Mishra still ‘fit’ enough to play IPL and perform at that level.

Apparently we have these supreme fitness standards yet we are still producing guys who start quaking in their boots when they are facing India, Australia, England or New Zealand bowlers throughout!

WoW never expected him to do well against International level bowlers, I guess the guy does have potential to play T20is for Pak in next couple of years if he continues to impress and work hard on his fitness , definitely should be 2 FC seasons and 2 PSL to further evaluate his potential and peak. Can be tried against minnows for now if he has a good PSL next year.

Azam Khan and the joy of hitting sixes

• The big-hitter once hit 29 sixes while making 265 runs in a T20 club match in Karachi

• The 22-year-old wants to make his legendary father Moin Khan proud with his performances and achievements

Rawalpindi, 14 October 2020:

The old cricket adage ‘when he hits, it stays hit!’ sums up the enormous power in Azam Khan’s big hits. The right-hander has smashed bowlers all around the dial in the ongoing National T20 Cup for First XIs for Sindh.

His batting prowess is one of the reasons of Sindh’s resurgence and a berth in the semi-final after an ordinary Multan-leg, in which they won only one of their four matches.

Azam struck a whirlwind 88 off 43 balls against the highflying Northern outfit as Sindh posted an imposing 221 for four and eventually registered a 25-run win that earned them a semi-final spot in the 25th match of the tournament played at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier in the tournament, he hit a blazing 55 (five sixes and four fours) against Northern albeit in a losing cause.

He has hit the ball 19 times beyond the boundary ropes in the National T20 Cup, the most for any batsman in the tournament to date, with some of the shots landing way past the ropes and well into the stands.

Azam developed his six-hitting habit from an early age while playing tape-ball cricket on the streets of Karachi. Born in a family of Test cricketers – with Moin Khan as his father and Nadeem Khan as uncle – Azam had cricket in his blood.

In one T20 innings at the Moin Khan Academy named after his father who captained Pakistan and represented the country in 69 Tests and 219 ODIs, Azam hit a staggering 29 sixes.

“I have a vivid memory of that match, it was played in January 2016,” Azam said. “I was representing Moin Khan Academy team and our opponents were a team called Karachi Hawks. I scored 265 runs in the 20-over match. I hit 29 sixes and 12 fours. That innings gave me the confidence that I can do something in the game and the people who saw the innings spread the word about the game and the innings in Karachi cricketing circles.”

“My first cricket memory was playing cricket at the age of four or five. When the Moin Khan Academy was established, I started playing there.

“I feel very proud that my father has such a big name in Pakistan cricket and that my uncle was too a Test cricketer. We talk a lot about cricket and have quality discussions at home, which are a big opportunity to learn about the game at a young age.

“My dad and I watch a lot of old Pakistan matches together and discuss the details of the game and have some very healthy conversations which I thoroughly enjoy.”

“Tape-ball cricket helped me develop big-hitting; I started playing cricket at a semi-professional to professional level at a young age which further enhanced my batting skills. I really enjoy practicing big-hits during nets and range-hitting sessions and I really back my ability of clearing the boundary which brings me a lot of joy.”

Azam who can also keep wickets remained part of the Quetta Gladiators side in the last seasons. This year’s edition, the homecoming of HBL Pakistan Super League, turned Azam’s fortunes as he won his side two matches at the National Stadium Karachi (against Islamabad United and Karachi Kings). His performances earned him the recognition of fans while the critics who had questioned his fitness and attitude to the game were also left amazed by his talent.

“My ambition is to work even harder now and especially on my fitness. I fully realise that I was overweight last year but I have reduced more than 30kgs. I still have a long way to go and I know I have to keep myself grounded if I have to achieve sustained success while further improving my batting skills.

“The year 2020 has been a great one for me despite the Covid-19 situation that held all of us back for a considerable time period. I am very happy that I made most of the opportunities provided to me by Quetta Gladiators and now this National T20 has been a wonderful experience that I am thoroughly enjoying.”

“The seniors in the Sindh team like Khurram Manzoor, Sharjeel Khan, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Anwar Ali have supported me wholeheartedly and I am really enjoying their company and learning so much by both sharing the dressing room with them and taking the field.

The 22-year-old is also hoping to don the Pakistan colours like his father and uncle. He fully appreciates the support he has from his father and another ambition of his is to make him very proud.

“My dad has supported me throughout, I feel indebted to him and at the same time it is such a wonderful feeling to be backed by a legend of the game. Being a great of the game, he really understands everything and is very rarely fully satisfied with my performances, as he always wants me to strive harder and harder. I really want to make him happy and proud of my performances and that matters everything to me.”

Hes working on his fitness yes he should have controlled it before but he is doing something about it and working on it !

Impressive turnaround. Never expected him to be this good. He need to lose some more kgs.

Run out in the semi-finals.

Possibly not his fault

With 75 off 47 balls, which included six sixes and six fours, opener Azam Khan was the top-scorer for Sindh on Day 3 of QeA 2nd XIs but all in losing cause as Sindh lost the match

Showing some good athleticism behind the stumps for Galle Gladiators.

As we are desperate need of a good WK/bat who can hit the ball batting at 6 or 7 in both ODI and T20 formats, AK development could be very interesting for PK.

Any highlights ?

If he’s able to get his fitness to around international level, he should quickly displace Rizwan in LOI’s.

That incredible agility given all the weight he's carrying

Azam Khan’s keeping in Corporate Cup 2019 (Ramadan tournament):

I would rather want to see how did he move initially tbh, that'll give a better picture on how his keeping skills are.

Keeping is all about tracking the ball from the release of the bowler's wrist up until the point it thuds into the gloves (if the ball does travel behind the stumps i.e).

His reflexes are good because even if he was wrong footed he did manage to save the wide down leg side but his initial movement would tell us if his instincts are those of a keeper or is he right now a good fielder who is handed the gloves.

I've seen Azam do gym routine and he's not the overweight kid that people make him out to be, but he does need to lose a bit of fat so that he'd actually have a stronger base to pivot better - It would also help his fielding improve X2/X3 times.

Also he needs to change his PSL side pronto, if he stays with QG (who have no plans of benching Sarfaraz) he would never get the opportunity to break into the national side as a WK/Bat which, let's be honest, is the only role he'd realistically have a chance in and would also not disable the balance of the team.

I feel bad for his knees. He should lose all the fat but i wonder if he can do it now and make a lifestyle change as a grown up. This is why discipline needs to be taught since a young age.

Weight loss is not just abotu discipline. Some people are heavier than others, some have health conditions etc. We all know that he works hard enough.
