[VIDEOS] Is Mohammad Shami the best ODI bowler at the moment?

The greatest ever fast bowler for India in odis. All the bowlers around the world should learn how he bowls

All time greatest Indian ODI bowler given how he raises his game during world cups. Incredible that he didn't play any ODIs in 2016 and 2021 (Covid probably). India's secret weapon in world cups.

He's seriously turning out to be India's greatest ODI bowler ever. His stats are up there with some of the greatest bowlers of all time - and this is an insane achievement considering that a lot of his wickets have come in WC matches which are considered the pinnacle competition for ODIs. As someone who hasn't followed his career that closely I was in awe of his record after the NZ semifinal today.

The world cup was played on Indian wickets. You know that you will either score lots of runs or spinners will take the most wickets here.

In comes a guy who didnt even the first half of the tournament. I think it was after 4 games, did Hardik get injured and they decided to bring in Mohammad Shami. Ideally, even if he bowled well, he would come in the top 10 maybe? He ends up taking 24 wickets, with three 5vers and one 4ver in just 7 games. He didnt even play all 11 games.

Yet the award was given to Kohli.

My assumption is that the decision was influenced by Kohli's brand power.

You know no one was going to get it but Kohli. The only way Shami would have won is if he had figures like 10-7-15-10 stats in the finals.

Thats the thing.
Why so? Because of his brand image?

Usually, the performance of final is not even counted and the player of the tournament award is judged based on games till semis.

Sadly he won't play next world cup, we all know he is not '33 years old '.:ifticool . You don't see similar bowlers like that anymore because of too much T20 cricket.

But you have to look at the conditions as well. Short boundaries and flat tracks, batters are more likely to perform. Plus, in India we see spinners dominate while pacers dont get much here. Shami bowled his heart on these flat tracks and was always the guy having the first impact.

Finals performance is never counted

As for World T20 2007, just cause Yuvraj hit 6 sixes did not mean he should get the award for the player of the tournament because by the same logic Maxwell would deserve it for this world cup. I think Misbah and Malik scored more runs than Yuvraj.

The player of the tournament standings for World T20 were

Afridi
Clarke
Jayasurya
Morkel
Yuvraj
It wasn't just those 6 sixes. He also scored 70 (30) vs Australia in the semifinal. One of greatest T20I knocks in history.

Afridi averaged 15 with the bat. If ICC wanted to give it to a Pakistani player as compensation for losing the final, there were better contenders within Pakistan too. Gul, Misbah and Malik all had better tournaments than Afridi. It was a total nonsense decision.

May be deep down the jury knew the reason for banana swing therfore award not given to him

Finals performance do not matter for the award
also, the back than it was based on voting i think of captains and not the ICC deciding.

Such a beautiful action and release, Ma sha Allah!

At the moment, both Shami and Bumrah will be in the Top 3 bowlers in the world. They are the reason why India demolished sides until finals. Shami could be the best in the world right now. Hard to debate his performances and stats in this WC.

Let's wait for the SA test series.

His bowling was class. Can’t believe that he was sitting on the bench while Siraj was starting in the lineup. Even when Pandya comes back, Shami should be playing ahead of Siraj.

Shami has definitely proved his worth in this world cup. he was even better than anybody when compared to other fast bowlers including Bumrah etc.

He's the best bowler in Wankhede Stadium Mumbai under lights.

Otherwise his countryman Bumrah, Starc, Shaheen are better

Shami has the best bowling average not just for the 2023 World Cup, but for all ODI World Cup's (min 20 wickets). Just look at the list of legends he has surpassed.

Probably is, artistry at its best. It was so cool to see how the seam stayed in the same upright position in the slow mos. Not trying to anything clever or overly outlandish just sticking to the basics and letting the ball do the work.

According to BCCI, Shami is currently undergoing medical treatment and his availability is subject to fitness for South Africa tour 2023-24

India's dynamic badminton duo of Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy will receive the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honour in the country for athletes, the sports ministry confirmed on Wednesday while announcing the annual National Sports Awards for 2023.

Based on the recommendations of a government-appointed panel, the ministry also gave its nod to confer the Arjuna Award to 26 sportspersons, including cricketer Mohammed Shami who enjoyed a stellar ODI World Cup.

In an interview with Aaj Tak on Wednesday, Shami revealed that the Indian cricket team players were not ready for the PM's visit as it came as a surprise for them.

"We were heartbroken after the loss and were sitting dejectedly. It was like our hard work of two months got negated due to just one match. It was our bad day and we were dejected but when the PM enters, you have to keep your head high. We were not even told that Modiji was coming there and suddenly he entered. Earlier, we were not even in the mood to eat and talk to each other but when he came, it was such a big surprise for us."

Updates on Mohammed Shami's probable return by BCCI

"Shami hasn't even started to bowl, he will have to go to NCA and prove his fitness. He looks doubtful for the first two Tests against England. Whereas in Yadav's case he will take more time than expected. After his hernia operation it might take up to eight-nine weeks for him to start training. Hopefully, he will be fit during the IPL,"

BCCI To Talk To Mohammed Shami Soon, Claims Report. Topic Is "How Much Cricket He..."

Mohammed Shami is currently on a break from cricket. He was last seen in action at the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, where he was the top wicket-taker. But a medical issue meant that he was not available for the South Africa tour and he will also end up missing the Afghanistan T20I series. While some reports claimed that he can even miss the first two Test matches against England, the fast bowler has revealed that he is training well and may be fit for the series.

In longer formats (Tests and ODIs), Shami has often been India's top-most bowler in recent times. While his performances for Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) speak for the talent he has, there hasn't been much clarity about his international future in the T20 format. Shami, who is set to be honoured with the Arjuna award, was asked about his future in the shortest format, and he didn't shy away from admitting that he himself lacks clarity on the subject.

Shami's last T20I came for India against England back in the T20 World Cup last year. Since then, the veteran pacer hasn't been called up in the shortest format by the selectors.

"Whenever T20s are being talked about, I don't understand if I am in the scheme of things or not. But I believe that there's IPL before the T20 World Cup. I don't know what will happen but playing T20 matches before the World Cup will help you show what your rhythm and performance is. If the team management likes what it sees, I am available for selection," he told Sports Tak.

Now, according to a report, the BCCI may soon hold a discussion with Mohammed Shami regarding his future plans.

"There will be a discussion with Shami to know what he wants to do going ahead. He has taken a lot of workload in the last few years. This discussion was supposed to happen in South Africa. Since he didn't travel with the team, the management and selectors will talk to him very soon," Times of India quoted a BCCI source as saying.

"It has to be clear how much cricket he wants to play beyond the IPL and Test matches."

Such a pity! He was virtually at his peak in the World Cup. Achilles tendon surgery is a big deal especially for a bowler who needs to trust the foot he braces on. He's not getting any younger.

Injuries are serious concerns these days with our players. It applies on both Shami and Bumrah and ofcourse couple of batters too.

Shami is back in the nets after recovering from a right heel injury.

Sight for sore eyes. Take your time Shami. All I need from him is to be fit for Australia. We need to go in there full strength and establish our dominance once and for all by beating them for a third time at home. I dream of half their senior players retiring demoralised at the end of that series - Smith, Khawaja, Starc. Lyon's getting on as well.

He is a terrific bowler. No doubt. But the crown still goes to Bumrah.

Although Shami has consistently outperformed Bumrah in many games, sometimes even series infact which is no small feat

But in terms of consistency, in terms of accuracy, swing, and variation, Bumrah stands tall.

Shami is the GOAT of World Cups. No one comes close.

He is equally good in Test cricket.. infact i rate him higher specially in Red ball cricket.
Naah, bumrah is superior. The X factor of Bumrah and number of tests he has delivered is proof of that. Indian pace sometimes really look toothless without Bumrah.
Shami in World Cups.... literal gold.

I honestly don't care about the comparison dude.

All I care is that we have two of the three quicks who'll walk into India's all time Test and ODI XIs bowling in tandem.

How lucky is that? How many countries can say that? Australia better watch out...this series is going to be payback for trying to pretend they're better than India in tests by winning a one off game in a third country against a half-baked team after having been thrashed by us for 4 years.

I rate Shami higher than Bumrah in ODIs. He takes wickets at will, runs through batting lineups, has great numbers against stronger teams, has unbelievable strike rate..
Probably India's best ever ODI bowler. 👍🏻

Shami has been an integral part of Indian bowling line up and was pretty consistent as well. Good to see him back in the nets but I think it will still be a long way to go for him to be back on the field for India.

Probably best from Asia. He is that good. Look at his wc record. Unreal

In odi format.

Weirdly doesn't do well in t20. Around Mitchell Johnson, Gillespie hazelwood level in tests.

Shami is a standout ODI bowler but he's not better than Bumrah. Batsmen literally look to play out Bumrah's overs eschewing all risky shots. The difference in their ER tells that tale.

Mo shami's strike rate was very good even before Bumrah made debut. Nobody can reverse like him. He is also an outstanding seam bowler.

And? Shami could be all that and still not be as good as Bumrah. Batsmen clearly see Shami as a scoring option and his high ER proves it. Batsmen are never in pure survival mode against Shami the way they are against Bumrah.

All i am saying is he doesn't need benefit from Bumrah. He is good on his own. Shami is never a scoring option in Indian conditons. His incredible Test record without Bumrah on Indian soil is testimony. I have never seen anyone reverse better than Shami from India (legally).

That's weird. Why are you saying he doesn't need to benefit from Bumrah when I am making no such claim? I am saying Bumrah is objectively a better white ball bowler.

Former India pacer Lakshmipathy Balaji on importance of Mohammad Shami for India's chances in CT 2025:

“Actually, he had out-bowled Bumrah in the 2019 (50-over World Cup) and in the last World Cup (2023). Bumrah is the champion bowler across formats, But Shami has experience and, before Bumrah’s arrival, it was Shami who carried India’s attack all through,”

“I think it’s very important. If India has to do well, then Shami has to come good with the new ball. The kind of impact he can make in his first six overs with the new ball, it will play a crucial role for India. Old ball is anyway…it is a defensive game now. If he can make early inroads regularly that will give a huge booster to India,"

“Since that (ankle) injury has happened, there was a little bit of slowness, maybe. It’s natural. But there is nothing you can do about it. It’s part of any sportsperson’s career. He has the experience to get over it and he will do it as he bowls more. It’s just about accepting the (physical) condition and continuing his best practices,”

“Shami is the leader of the pack right now. I mean, he has been the leader of the pack for a long time now. If you see what Shami has done in 12 years of cricket and, especially, in Test cricket, it has been humongous. Now, if he starts striking with the new ball the confidence it gives to other bowlers will be huge,”

Shami will do an OK job in this event I think. He is not fully fit IMO and might struggle in UAE. Let's see.

Shami highlights comeback struggles ahead of Champions Trophy return

India fast bowler Mohammed Shami has revealed there were times when he thought his international career was over and he would never get another opportunity to represent his country.

Shami injured his ankle during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 2023 and was sidelined for almost a year as he battled with self doubt and a strict rehabilitation process in an attempt to prolong his already distinguished career.

The 34-year-old did make a successful return when featuring in four white-ball fixtures for India against England across the last month and is now set to push his comeback even further when he turns out for his country in their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener against Bangladesh in Dubai on Thursday.

It's been a long road back to the big stage for Shami and the talented right-armer said there were times when he thought he may never make it back at all.

"From being in great form during the World Cup to suddenly finding myself on the operating table from that form to being injured was really tough," Shami told the ICC.

"My first question to the doctor was 'how many days until I can be back on the field'. He said my priority is to get you to walk, then jog and then run and thinking about playing competitive cricket is still a distant goal.

"I always wondered when I would be able to put my feet on the ground again someone who is used to running on the field constantly was now in crutches.

"A lot of thoughts used to run through my mind. Will I be able to do it again? Will I be able to walk without a limp?

"For the first two months I often doubted whether I would be able to play again as an injury like this followed by a 14-month break can pull you down."

Shami paid tribute to the role his family played during his rehabilitation and said the BCCI had been very supportive of him throughout the process.

It was the desire to once again represent India on the big stage that drove Shami during the tough times and gave him the strength to push through the pain barrier.

"After 60 days when they asked me to put my feet on the ground, you wont believe me, but I have ever been more scared to put my foot on the ground," Shami said.

"It felt like I was starting over, like a toddler learning how to walk and I was worried about any complications.

"Courage and passion to play for the country are the biggest motivators and the desire to wear the India badge on my chest kept me going.

"You endure the pain and take it one step at a time without complaints or bitterness.

"The passion for representing my country has brought me this far.

"It was tough and there was pain, but with resilience and patience I made it through."

And now that Shami has made a successful return, he wants to prolong his career and continue to represent India for as long as his body allows.

"My motivation has always been to serve my country for as long as possible," Shami added.

"Because once you step away you're just like anyone else.

"Today, by the grace of god I am playing for India again and feeling much better."

Team manage must be really stupid to show desperation in playing Shami. I know Shami himself wants to come back. But at this age playing and breaking down again will create chaos.

Shami now feels more like a freelance cricketer we hire for the ICC events. He has far surpassed the expectations every single time, but this just feels different. There's no way age and injuries won't catch up.

Sami is a mohalla bowler and has inflated his stats vs weak teams. In the ODI WC final at home, he got smashed to all parts. As soon as you start hitting him he leaks. Not even top 10 lol.

Better than Wasim Akram .

Maybe not in par with Starc or McGrath but up there for sure

Most important point is his entire career fell in two new ball era. ONe of the greatest reverse swing bowler couldn't enjoy the reverse advantage in ODI. He would have been even more deadly with single ball

Yeah best from India, Zaheer was amazing too but Shami has usually been an awesome wicket taker.

Indian bowlers tbh have been delivery very well in ODI.
1983-1987 we had good ones.
2003-2011 we did well
and now 2013-2025 we have done well too.
Indian bowlers might not be magical but helluva disciplined and mostly stick to plans in ICC tournaments.
