There's lots to like about Rizwan's batting, his energy, his positivity, his willingness to go for his shots and his confidence.

He has a nice array of shots, looks to rotate the strike and is aggressive when he's batting.

Having said the above, he's still naive at times and seems too excitable at the crease. There's a bit of panic when he's at the crease, almost as if he's trying to be a bit too creative and there's always a chance of a run-out.

If he can calm down a bit at the crease and keep the positivity, he has the potential to be a very handy batsman.

He is no Kamran Akmal with the bat but can be what Sarfaraz was during his purple patch

I think people are demotivating him by reminder him his stats.
Rizwan should be considered as a new player after Sarfraz's sacking.
Give him time, he should evolve. If not, bring in Rohail Nazir

Kamran akmal was no great shakes tbh Kamrans avge doesnt lie He was quite ordinary tbh bar a couple of innings every once in a while

He is much much better than that pathetic sarfraz ahmed and that's enough for me as long as that loser is not in the team it's alright.

Given how well he keeps behind the stumps, I don't think people should worry too much if he doesn't score for a couple innings. Once he gets some games under his belt his batting will settle, as long as his keeping stays at that standard he should be first choice in tests for the next few years. England are seeing with Buttler what picking a keeper for his batting does to a team.

Not a number 6 but has shown enough to be preserved with for the next year. Needs to keep working on his batting and could end up as a solid WK/Bat averaging around 30.

Batsman?

He's not much of a batsman technique wise. Horrendous. Not meant to succeed in the long term.

BUT

He occasionally scores some runs, and then some folks start throwing tantrums how he's underrated and criticized.

But that is mostly the awaam who doesn't judge the batting ability of a batter. They just go by some fluke knocks.

Maybe a word to two from Rizwan as Rory left

He batted like an old fashion WK bat in the 2nds innings and he looked good.
I know everyone is very positive about his WK, and rightly sobbut as the commies pointed, he stands too deep which means that slips are also too deep. I think the Sibley Slip chance that failed to carry was a direct result of that.

This is where team analysts etc should come into play - I just hope they were tuned into TV coverage as that is just a freebee!

There's a lot to like with this "new" Rizwan, he's keeping improvement, fitness and batting has improved. Still needs some runs this series to really stamp his authority.

But even after it was obvious, nothing changed. Either the coaches were too scared to tell him or he refused to listen.

Yes defo he held everything compared to buttler and dowich he made them as keeper looking mediocre

That's a good point but overall very very good

Rizwan at 6 or 7 does not need to have the best technique. All he needs is to play his natural game which has intent and aggression. He is a busy player and should be given a free role down the order for counter-attacking cricket. His wicket-keeping technique is awesome and we need to play him in test cricket for next two-three years. Sarfraz should work on Limited overs team as he can easily play T20s but in tests right now Rizwan is best in Pakistan by a mile. The younger lot needs grooming for 2-3 years and then they can make their way.

Best keeping I have seen by a Pakistani keeper standing up to the wicket. Got potential and guts as a batsman as demonstrated by his performance in Australia.

An absolutely fantastic wicket keeper, and very promising potential as a good counter attacking batsman.

He hasn't been much impressive with the bat but his keeping has been good. He is probably the best keeper since Rashid Latif.

He will struggle big time in England with the bat. If he couldn't score runs in Manchester, it's only going to get worse for him here on forward.

But his keeping is world class. I will keep him in the team for his keeping and he will come good with the bat in sub continent.

Too early to call but he should be given a real go. That means 10/15 tests. WK/batsman is probably the area we struggle the most at currently as we have no one.

At least Mohammad Rizwan is keeping well so far. Regarding his batting, I think he has the potential to become a good test batsman.

Holding just pointing out the major flaw that always seems to get him in trouble. Lack of any feet movement and pushing at the ball every time. He might get away with that in the subcontinent/UAE but its bound to be his downfall whenever the ball moves around or bounces a fail deal.

I actually like him, hes the best keeper we've had since Rashid. But he needs to do something about this.

Whatever his problems - just needs to put his head down and no crazy running!

I think, he is a very good WK, but not so sure about his batting - average of 29 after 6 Tests doesn’t give much confidence. But, he has few years left & a very good FC record, no reason why he can’t improve his batting stats.

I like Rizwan. He is a very good keeper. He is busy at the crease but he needs to stay calm at times. He gets a bit excited and it can result in his dismissal.

He should have gotten a prolonged run in the side earlier than he did.

Look how he bats bro.

Plants his feet, and then follows the line of the ball with his hands

The fact that Babar and Rizwan made through this session tells us they are mentally much superior players especially Babar. Rizwan is doing his job well and better than Asad because I do not think Asad could have stayed on the wicket in this hour of play. Rizwan needs support of the fans in test cricket. Sarfraz might be better for T20s and for Odis they can compete but in tests Sarfraz's prime is over and Rizwan's best patch is going on right now. We should avail Rizwan's skills in tests for 2-3 years and meanwhile work on the younger options to make them ready.

Rizwan batting on 19* now with the tail, at 171/7. Batting at 7 he will have to do this a lot, let's see if he can farm the strike and drag Pakistan past 200.

He is an okay bat, but batting too low which makes him ineffective. You need someone lower down who can counter attack and get some valuable runs batting with the tail.

Pakistan needs to think about it.

Crucial 50 by Rizwan - he is playing well with the tail, but maybe needs to go for more boundaries.

Well done Rizwan.

So yet another batsman in the side who has done better than kaptaan sahab. I don't have the stats but just going by memory every single of the top 7 may have better stats in this series than our lovely seeda sada sharif decent acha bacha captain. Minus hockey fullback Fawad Alam ofcourse.

its unbelievable that some in the media wanted to drop him even after he scored 95 in Australia

The man has grit and character. Makes up for his technical flaws. Not a player that will last past the age of 32-33 I would say but if he perseveres with this attitude he can be a valuable asset to the team.

Rizwan, the test player, needs support from the fanbase as well as PCB. He is the best right now in Pakistan. We can only judge how good he is internationally if he plays some 20-30 test matches.

The innings he is playing right now that mediocre sarfraz can only dream of playing like that. So so much better than that Medicare player.

He’s an excellent player until then. Really glad he’s in the team. It’s also good we are developing other keepers for that period of 5 years until Rizwan is expected to decline, starting with Rohail but also including Rohail’s teammate Muhammad Haris who people have their eyes on.

As well as Rizwan has batted for his half-century, MIKE ATHERTON (for Sky Sports) fears that England rather lost the plot in the build-up to tea with their over-defensive tactics...

"It was a really interesting session. Rizwan is a real fighter. He made his debut as a specialist batsman and you can see he has plenty of ability.

"The more interesting side of the session's play was England's bowling. England were very good in the opening 40 minutes after lunch when they bowled fuller but I'm afraid that in the last 45 minutes before tea, they completely lost the plot.

"They had a second new ball in the hands of Broad in the most peachy bowling conditions you can imagine and there were six men out on the boundary.

"I understand that Rizwan is batting with the tail but those are the conditions you fancy getting Rizwan out as well; just ask yourself the question, if Rizwan was still batting with Babar Azam, what kind of field would you have set for him? You wouldn't have six men out.

"England suddenly started bowling short to Rizwan in conditions where you wanted to challenge the batsman's technique, as they had been doing so beautifully."

Innings of great character this!! It lifts the team . . great fight shown!

If I am not wrong he is only the second Pakistani wicket keeper batsman in the history to score a 50 in both Aus and Eng and he did that in under 10 career test matches. First one was Wasim Bari who played 81 tests.

Good knock from Rizwan. Batted really well with the tail and played a magnificent counter attacking innings.

Nasser Hussain “He was under pressure himself, because he’s coming and replacing a very good, feisty cricketer, an ex-captain in Sarfaraz Ahmed who would play this sort of innings that Rizwan has played. I thought he played really nicely and his biggest attribute and asset with the bat is that he is a fighter, he will not give you anything and he’s quite smart and we saw that with his wicket-keeping at Old Trafford. He’s a real talent and a really good cricketer.”

Saw most of the innings today and was really impressed with his mental toughness. His batting showed no little talent and if this trajectory is continued, he will average 30, which is excellent.

Played well actually. The best thing going for him is his fitness and confidence. Batting wise he’s not the best looking but it’s that fitness and confidence that’s doing him good

Reigned in his natural game and battled hard today, hopefully he will keep scoring important runs for the team.

Kamran Akmal was never very good with the bat.

He was bloody good at the start of his career, scored 2 of the best 100s ever scored by PK batsman in Mohali and Karachi against Ind. The lack of competition and the consequent complacency led to his downfall. To keep Rizwan on his toes, Sarfaraz must stay hungry and competitive.

He reminds of a good old fashion WK/Bat, mentally tough, scoring runs today when most needed and pharming the strike when the tail was in.

In Away Tests ( Last 2 Years)

Most 25+ Scores by Wicket Keeper Batsman ~

Rishabh Pant - 10
N Dickwella - 8
Md. Rizwan - 5*
Ben Foakes - 5
S Dowrich - 5

He has a few memorable knocks but the majority of his knocks were below mediocre It was feast or famine with him hence why he avged 30 in tests

He was in the team 3-5 years too long on this so called perception he was the next gilchrist when his batting was very poor most of the time

Rizwan is on a different level when it comes to wicket-keeping compared with Kamran Akmal.

id say theres several levels of difference from what weve seen so far

He definitely deserves to be the wicketkeeper in Tests. I wouldn't have him in T20s but in tests he is really good.

Really impressed by his knock today.. Showed character and grit batting with the tail. Yasir joined him with the score at 158 and hes single handedly taken us to 223.
Also aided by the English bowling tho. Way too defensive with the new ball.

I am not disagreeing with you say because its true over his career but upto his finger injury he was an excellent bat and decent keeper. Those 2 innings are 2 of the best PK inngs ever played

Who cares. If it works for him, it's good enough. It should be quite obvious at this point that textbook technique is overrated as we've seen so many unorthodox batsmen succeed at the highest level.

Besides, there's a visible improvement in his balance from when he first came on to the scene, which suggests he's working on his game.

Great knock , maybe Pakistan should look at maybe batting him higher up the order ?

If he can manage to add another 30-40 some how it’s game on

Balance is the ultimate key to batting sucess

He played well but does not mean he is a good batsman. The technical flaws are evident to naked eye. A problem with Pakistan has been to get carried away by technically average bastmen playing a gritty knock.

He is a good keeper and that is what should be his primary focus. Runs are a bonus from him. Should come more from the top 6 or top 5 batsmen.

Pakistan should really invest in a batsman who can play with tail enders . Someone who has the ability to block and hit . Rizwan did do a decent job but Pakistan should really think about someone like Haider Ali as a replacement for Asad Shafiq with rizwan batting up the order. At no 7/8 You need batsman who can hit the ball not just hang around.

He is a 32-35 average player, and that is good enough for a mediocre team like Pakistan when you combine it with his excellent keeping.

The door on Sarfraz has closed for good and it is wonderful to see.

I’m honest with you guys, I really thought he isn’t that good and is limited.

But the way he has played yesterday, he has done well. I think he should play Buttleresque role in our team because when he started playing his shots he felt much more confident at the crease.

Rizwan to me has always looked ungainly at the crease, especially when trying to accelerate as his position and balance isn't there which we see in white ball cricket.

However I appreciate his willingness to grit it out in tough conditions and his keeper obviously has been excellent.

Think Abid Ali to an extent and Rizwan have shown the way for others.

he obviously has talent with the bat and has great keeping skills but more than that in all aspects of his game he has personality grit and character

Hes definietly first choice in my odi and test teams going forward for now
