[VIDEOS/PICTURES] The IPL 2020 (19th September - 10th November) Tournament Thread

Will definitely catch some action this time. Some very exciting players are on display.. I'll be rooting for KKR as somehow I got attached to that team in season 1!

Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock will continue to open the innings for Mumbai Indians in this edition of the Indian Premier League, which begins from Saturday.

In an interaction from Abu Dhabi - where the team is stationed - on Thursday, Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene admitted that even though the team has roped in Chris Lynn this time around, there are no plans to change the opening pair for now.

“Having options is always great. Lynny is a great addition to the squad, but the combination of Ro and Quinton has been phenomenal for us last season. They complement each other very well, it has been very consistent and both are very well experienced cricketers, good leaders. Why would you fix something if it is not broken?,” Jayawardene said.

“We will continue to go with that, but having Lynny as an option gives us flexibility in the squad. That’s what we have always done over the last few years and add more value and options to the team so that we can be unpredictable when it comes to different matches. But Quinton and Ro as a combination has been brilliant for us,” the former Sri Lanka captain said.

‘All options open’

Rohit, too, admitted that he was gearing up to open the innings once again, even though he wanted to keep “options” open.

“I opened the entire tournament last year and I will continue to do that. Again, I keep all the options open, whatever the team wants, I am happy to do that. I enjoy batting top of the order, I have been doing that for a while. Even when I play for India, the message from my side has always been the same that do not close any doors and keep all the options open. I will do the same here as well,” the India international said.

However, getting used to the conditions in the United Arab Emirates will be a challenge for the Mumbai Indians as not many cricketers have played in those conditions in the past.

‘I opened the entire tournament last year and I will continue to do that. Again, I keep all the options open, whatever the team wants, I am happy to do that.’

“The challenge will be to adapt to these conditions, which probably none of us are used to because not a lot of cricketers from our group have played here. So, it is important to share the information and we have clearly spoken about that, how important (for those who have played to pass on the information). The communication is going to be key here to make sure that we don’t leave anything behind,” the captain said.

“Mentally, it’s about going out there and understanding how the pitch is doing and based on that, you need to plan your game. We played a couple of practice matches and we understood what to expect going out in the middle. The plannings are happening that because pitches are going to play a critical part here, and reading the pitches will be important and giving the information to the team will be very critical as well,” Rohit said.

‘Mentally prepared’

The Indian cricketers have been out of action for the last six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and now that IPL is set to begin, the players are keeping themselves mentally strong, despite being inside a bio-bubble.

“It’s going to be a different IPL. We were mentally prepared for something like this and we had a lot of talks around it and even before we came here, we had all the boys on conference call and we were discussing how do we handle if there’s any bio-bubble. Now that we are here, we know the restrictions and are making sure that we follow all the protocols. Mentally, it is tough but hats off to the Mumbai Indians team management and the support staff - they have done an exceptional job. So, mentally you are fresh, and we have been here for three weeks now and all of us seem to be in a good space…” Rohit said.

The defending champion begins its campaign on Saturday against Chennai Super Kings and Rohit is cautious. “CSK is probably one of the most successful teams. You can’t take them for granted at all. They have got some quality players in their squad and they will come out all guns blazing. None of us have played cricket for a lot of months, so obviously everybody want to start on a high. We will be expecting a great contest between the two teams and we need to focus on what we need to do as a team and make sure that all our bases are covered,” the Mumbai Indians skipper stated.

Happy for CSK to win every IPL until the end of time as long as the grandpas playing for them never play for India again :moyo

Haa Grandpa might retire from Indian team but you still got the brat playing red.. lets see what he does :vk1

As the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicks off today (September 19, 2020) with defending champion Mumbai Indians taking on Chennai Super Kings (CSK), tournament Chairman Brijesh Patel feels that this year`s IPL will bring the highest ever viewership in the history of the competition.

In an interaction with ANI from the UAE, Patel talked about the challenges faced to host the IPL amid the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier, IPL was postponed indefinitely due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Initially, the tournament was scheduled to begin on March 29.

"It is very satisfying to see IPL happening after all the hurdles on the way. Finally, we are able to make it happen but this is only the beginning as it is a long tournament so we cannot afford to be complacent but definitely, it is very satisfying," Patel told ANI.

"I think cricket fans were a bit disappointed when it was (IPL) postponed and nothing was certain about the fate for the tournament. But now they (fans) are looking forward to seeing some live cricket so I feel this year`s viewership will be highest ever and this year`s IPL should be bigger than last year as well," he added.

Patel further thanked BCCI, IPL officials, and the Indian government for making IPL happen in the UAE. The Chairman shared how the Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) supported them to host the competition in the UAE.

"It is also the hard work and patience of all our members in BCCI and IPL officials, they have put in a lot of hard work to make it happen. To start with, it was the Indian government who gave us the nod to host the IPL abroad and would also like to thank ECB, who willingly wanted to have IPL in UAE," Patel said.

"See there is no hold on the pandemic, no one could control it so we had to keep waiting and watching and find out that where and when we can play. It was in no one`s hand it could be anywhere but UAE had controlled the COVID-19 situation. We are taking care of all the guidelines and giving priority to the health and safety of players which is no doubt paramount for us," he added.

IPL will be played across three venues -- Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah in the UAE. Dubai will play host to 24 games, 20 matches will be hosted by Abu Dhabi while Sharjah will hold 12 games. The dates and venues for the playoff stages will be released later.

The opening match between the finalists of the 2019 edition will be played in Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. For the first time in the history of the tournament, the finals will be played on a weekday -Tuesday.

Both the afternoon and evening matches will be played half an hour earlier than usual this time around. There will be a total of 10 doubleheaders in this edition of the tournament. The evening matches will be played at 7:30 PM IST while the afternoon matches are due to start at 3:30 pm IST.

IPL 2020: The players who could become new cricket superstars

The 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket tournament begins in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday.

The glamorous tournament is one of the richest in the world and attracts top players from India and abroad.

Fans pack stadiums across India, including top Bollywood stars and politicians.

But everything will be different this time because of the coronavirus pandemic. The matches will be played in empty stadiums and the usual parties will also not happen.

But one aspect is likely to remain constant - the tournament's record of creating new cricketing superstars.

All teams have bought new players, and some of them are from India's under-19 team.

Here are some of the players who have the potential to be match-winners for their teams.
line

Yashasvi Jaiswal

The stylish batsman idolises cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and had always dreamt of meeting and learning from him.

His dream came true soon after he returned to India after playing in the under-19 World Cup in South Africa in February. Tendulkar met him and praised his performances in the tournament.

He hasn't looked back since then - he will make his IPL debut for the Rajasthan Royals team this year.

His team has huge expectations from him and it's obvious why if we look at his Under-19 World Cup record. His scores read 88, 105 not out, 62, 57 not out, 29 not out and 57. He was the top scorer in this year's edition and became only the third batsman in the tournament's history to score five half centuries.

His background story is also as inspiring as his cricket achievements.

Jaiswal came to the bustling city of Mumbai from a small town in Uttar Pradesh state to better his skills. He slept rough and sold street snacks to make a living.

A local coach soon spotted him and took him under his wings - and his life took a turn for the better.

It won't be easy for him to make a mark in his star-studded team which has international stalwarts like Jos Butler and Ben Stokes.

But then he knows how to make his mark, especially when the going gets tough.
line

Ravi Bishnoi

Former Test cricketer Aakash Chopra has described Bishnoi as India's next "spin wizard".

And it's not an exaggeration given Bishnoi's stellar performances in the Under-19 World Cup.

He took 17 wickets, often at crucial times to help India win matches. His team lost the finals to Bangladesh, but Bishnoi emerged as one of the star performers from the tournament.

He is part of the Kings XI Punjab team in the IPL, and is expected to play a crucial role in their campaign.

The Kings are largely a mid-table side and they will be looking at Bishnoi to repeat his World Cup heroics for them.

Priyam Garg

Garg captained India under-19 in the World Cup and took his side to the final. Though his scores were modest, they don't tell the full story.

He led the side with authority and showed his skills in making crucial tactical decisions.

The middle-order batsman also has a strong reputation in India's domestic cricket tournaments. He made his first-class debut in 2018 for Uttar Pradesh state and soon scored a double hundred, announcing his arrival in the big league.

He scored heavily in other matches too and that paved the way for him to become the captain of the under-19 side.

Sunrisers Hyderabad have put faith in him in this year's IPL. If history is to be taken into account, Garg's chances of a promising career look bright.

Many under-19 captains, including current national captain Virat Kohli, Prithvi Shaw, Mohammad Kaif and Parthiv Patel, went on to play for India and also did well in club cricket.

And if Garg helps the Sunrisers to stay on top on the table, his chances of representing India will get stronger.

Kartik Tyagi

If Bishnoi was known for confusing batsmen with his googlies, Tyagi often shocked them with his ability to swing the ball both ways at a decent pace in the tournament.

He picked 11 wickets at an average of 13.90 and that made him one of the top picks for the Rajasthan Royals in this year's IPL auction.

His team-mates include Indian fast bowler Varun Aron and England pacer Jofra Archer. The trio are expected to form a destructive pace attack for the Royals.

Tyagi can be particularly useful on the slow tracks of the UAE because of his precision and his ability to vary his pace.

And if Ben Stokes misses the first half of the tournament, which is likely to happen, Tyagi may end up being the frontline bowler for the team.

High hopes from Jaiswal and Tyagi.. lets see how they fare..
Nagarkoti as well i think will be interesting to watch..

Will be interesting for the PSL v IPL type discussions if we see high scoring games in IPL on pretty much same pitches where PSL was played.

Look at the pitch. Never seen so much grass on a UAE pitch. Opinion?

Captain Steve Smith along with star players Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler have cleared the mandatory COVID-19 test on arrival and are available to play Rajasthan Royal’s IPL opener against Chennai Super Kings at the Sharjah Cricket ground on September 22. The trio were part of the 21-strong contingent of Australia and England players, who arrived in the UAE from UK by a special chartered flight on September 17.

“Smith, Buttler and Archer underwent COVID-19 tests on Friday and results are negative. So they are available for selection with quarantine duration being reduced to 36 hours,” an IPL source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Former Australia skipper Smith has had concussion problems and missed all three ODIs against England and his participation in the opening game is subject to clearance from both franchise and Cricket Australia’s medical team.

If Smith misses the first game, Buttler could lead the side as he is one of the seniormost players in the team.

As of now, the franchise is hopeful that Smith will clear the mandatory concussion tests and be available from the first game itself.

Dont like the reduced quarantine time. And there should have been another covid test.

I wonder if they had a extended biosecure bubble?

2nd half of the tournament may get slow pitches.. but i really think this slow pitches rhetorics have been overdone with...

PSL all these years have given such impression... Need to see this full IPL season to come to a true conclusion

How does this Deepak Chahar guy make it into an IPL side? And then we have long debates on PP about how the IPL has the best bowling standards in the world

IPL definitely has the best bowling standard ... Other than some self designated league.. where evn luke ronchie nd kamran akmal of all people make merry.. lol

Ygm lol first over of the ipl

This is the first time in 7-8 years where I will watch the IPL with some scrutiny due to this being the only live cricket on at the moment.

At the moment I believe the Indian bowling roster are most likely well below the standards of the Pakistani bowling roster. So the overseas international bowlers are key in order to make the tournament competitive with a decent standard.

Because Dhoni prefers trundlers over speedsters. All other sides have decent pacers

Nope.. so called PSL miniscule stars have been time and again shown their place..

PSL has Pathetic batting resources.. where even a mediocre bowler can run rampage...

Whereas IPL has best batting resources .. where even a incredibly good Bowler can go for plenty...

This is the difference between the two leagues...

Even in u19 world cup we saw where some people were claiming 150kph green shirts bowlers will run rampage.. only to be shown their place by jaiswal nd co...

Lol even tyagi outbowled nd outpaced all pakistani u19 pacer combined

PSL average scores were 190 this year.

It’s a long tournament, let’s see how many more Chahars we see.

Piyush Chawla and Rohit Sharma look like they have not done any fitness during lockdown. Below par fitness standards

Chahar averages 14.7 in International T20s. You can hype your bowlers all you want, the performances are what count

If Piyush can still play looking like a grandad I don’t see why we can’t have Zulfi cobra or Abdul Rehman back in the PSL

Deepak chahar is considered a very impactful PP bowler and the CSK analytics team clearly saw that. Won't do much in longer formats.

Aah, the age old Indian argument.

Who needs to bowl phaast when you take wickets, hence Ajit Agarkar a greater bowler than Shoaib Akhtar

Even ngidi was taken to cleaners...

It's the batting resources which differentiate the two leagues... Bowling resources is very much similar... But their is a huge gap between batting resources of two leagues...

IPL has the batting powerhouse of all countries combined sans pakistan (pakistan hardly has one gun batter or hard hitter) .. nd t20 is batsman game.. people flocks to ground ( or watch it in tv) to see sixes nd boundaries..not mundane tuk tuking nd Bowers running Circles around batsman

Akhtar averages way better than Agarkar. See when earlier you hyped up bowlers like Akhtar, Asif at least they had performances to back them up. Bowlers like Shaheen, Naseem, Amir, have absolutely nothing to justify the hype

We villagers are so unlucky, don't have any Cable TV facility, poor internet connection.

I am following IPL through score card.

I don’t think you watched the last PSL. But anyways let’s enjoy this amazing attack bowling by Chahar and Curran

I don’t hype any of these bowlers to the moon but they have all bowled well in certain matches and occasions. You don’t become a name like Mohammad Amir unless you have two of the greatest batsmen of this generation both acknowledging him to be the most difficult bowler they have faced btw

Shaheen averaged 14 in the world cup 2019

Tiwary also looking overweight...what’s going on here? I’ve seen 3 players out of 22 who look 15kg overweight

Naahh not even close.. Don't even know the names of psl teams... PSL are short of international stars... Even Pakistani team have lost their old stars nd have failed to produce new stars... I would have watched PSL if it had players of star value like wasim, waqar, akhtar, inzamam, razzak ( like 90s team of pakistan which had far more stars nd fan following in India)

Instead we have akmals, shahzads nd luke ronchies, ravi boparas of all people making merry in PSL... Babar is the single lone player whom i would watch.. but that's it... even babar loses on star value.. nd is soft in t20 cricket.. lacks power nd range hitting...Rest of the pak batsman simply don't entice much...

A la Asif ali which was regarded as next big hitter who would send balls into galaxy... Only to be found out in international cricket...

Pakistan suffers from lack of power hitters nd thus with local talent at PSL who falls shortly at this metric.. will always find it short when compared to IPL batting talents

Looks like a good batting wicket..180 should be minimum target here

Each to their own. It is fascinating to see how the likes of Chahar get a contract in the ultimate league of cricket and how they fare against the best batsmen in the world. The beauty of IPL

Chahar is a good swing bowler in Bhuvi mould,if there is no swing he will get hit like most "only swing" dependent bowlers ,he operates between 128-135 mostly so won't bother batsmen with pace, but is certainly a good bowler for this format

Dhoni smartly getting Chahar’s overs through against Suryakumar and Tiwary. The international batsmen will be sending him to Dubai!

Legend Pandya (2nd best all rounder after Stokes) is batting now.

Well he got Yadav's wicket, and he had a very good batting record in IPL..

Ngidi being taken to cleaners... He has been very expensive today.. gotta come back soon to provide some respite to CSK
