Waqar Younis "Liked that Rizwan stood in the middle and read prayers in front of the Hindus"

Waqar Younis on TV:

"Sabse ache baat jo Rizwan ne ki. Usne ground mein khade hoke Naamaz padhe, hinduon ke beech mein....So that was really something very very special for me. (What I liked the most is what Rizwan did. He stood in the middle of the ground and read the prayers, in front of the Hindus)."

He's issued an apology for his comments:

Statement on TV:

My intentions weren’t like that. I never comment or get involved in religious things. I was very excited as Pakistan had won the match and in that excitement I used words that may have hurt some people’s sentiments. So I apologise if you were offended by my comments. I never meant it and it was heat of the moment and I apologise

Well that was was Pakistan's coach till last month.

I think nobody should bring religion in sports.

These comments should be simply ignored.

Waqar Younis said this actually. He was your ex coach and have been associated with PCB in various capacity over the years. So its not any random person is making these comments.

But I agree we should not be bothered much about such statements. Pakistan won and they will milk this moment a bit. We (Indian fans) have to live with it until we meet next time.

Nothing wrong with being ultra religious but I hate people who creates this kind of dramas. I am a big fan of people like Mion Ali, Amla and our own Mushi, I'm sure they are very good practicing Muslim but being dignified people and thorough professionals , would never show off their religious rituals just to show the billion Tv viewers. God does not need to watch you praying on TV.

We have another moulvi as our coach, Saqi, does he look like a coach of a national team with his big belly . How can you motivate the players to work hard on fitness if your own physique is like a village Mullah.

Ravi Shastri has a bigger belly than Saqlain......it has nothing to do with being a Mullah, its just the lack of fitness culture in sub-continent.

Its cricket a game of cricket and not even the biggest sport in the world. Why would someone belittle their own religion etc by saying winning a cricket game is a win for Islam? So if the lost it will be a loss to Islam?

Praying in front if Hindus or any other religious group is only victory for free world which also includes India. So again god know why anyone would make anything big over this?

Stupid comment.

Rizwan praying has nothing to do with India, he prays on pitch even in domestics

I dont know in what contest he made this comment tbh he can come across as very stupid in many things he says. Maybe he means he liked that he had the courage to still pray when he was among people from another religion?

Rizwan offered Namaz during #INDvPAK match in middle of Hindus was most satisfying thing Mashallah, even more than his batting!

Making something out of nothing... this is why pakistanis are mocked... dude no one cares about religious superiorority except pakistanis...

If you want to be muslim, hindu, christian, jewish, etc.. who cares you are basically praying to the SAME God but with a different name.

We all know waqar is an idiot.. this is why yout dont go to sports players for intellect... lmao even imran sold out to the army just so he could "win"

What courage? He was playing in UAE. Why would he need courage to offer prayer in UAE? I am sure Indian team is not even bothered or probably didnt even noticed.

Waqar is just elated with the win and these statements are by product. Happens.

Don’t bring political scores here. Imran and Army whats that got to do with cricket.

Misbah and Waqar must be cussing themselves. Why did we quit, we could have a part of History in Making with India win.

What I really disappointed with is how Indian fans are trolling Mohd Shami. So sad to see that can only happen in India.

What is wrong with our Pakistani public in general? They are so insensitive when it comes to other people’s religious sentiments. Yet we go around claiming to be the most open hearted and welcoming people.

These ridiculous, racist comments need to stop and cancelled

I am not favour of the Sajda by these guys when they score 10 but Namaz is compulsory and I respect the decision and support it.

I'm a religious scholar belonging to deobandi sect and I'm telling u with 100% certainty it is wrong what they said..its horrible...the purpose of prayer is to please Allah and nothing to do with Hindus or any other beliefs...

Our prophet Muhammad SAW was merciful to everyone be it Muslims or non Muslims...he stood up for a Jews funeral prayer...

Rizwan and Amla are great examples to follow not waqar and shoaib..

Thanks

I think the Hindu Indian would be justified to do a Hindu religious jester or act of worship during the next Pak v India match, and Pakistanis should have no objection to it.

Hate it when religion is dragged into this contest! It’s a game of cricket, not a war between Islam and Hinduism!

God forbid if India somehow meets us in the final and we lose?Would that be considered a loss for Islam? Personally, I think players should stay away from politics and religion when they're on the cricket field. Whatever we said out of emotion could really backfire on us so badly.

Ridiculous comments, the players on the pitch played in the right spirit, ex players of the pitch need to shut up with their insensitive comments, waqar should no better

Agree with you on everything you say! I dont really know what his actual point was? If a muslim players want to offer prayer for his performance I dont know what its got to do if Hindus are present or not.

Lol there was a funny joke on twitter I saw for this Waqar comment that another 15 years of BJP and ministers would be calling the Indian players to match the on field religious worship of the Pakistanis to show that Hinduism is no less and players will start lighting an aarti and agarbathi after a 50 lol.

Making something out of nothing... this is why pakistanis are mocked... dude no one cares about religious superiorority except pakistanis...

If you want to be muslim, hindu, christian, jewish, etc.. who cares you are basically praying to the SAME God but with a different name.

And how do you know everyone is basically praying to SAME god?

Stupid comment its a cricket match not a war

At the same time we have Hindus, Sikhs, Christians and other religions in our country as well.

India also has muslims in their country too.

The match was 2 nations playing not 2 religions it was india vs Pakistan and not Islam vs Hinduism.

Stupid comment and should be ignored

Also, Pakistan interior minister saying Pakistan winning was a victory of islam. So what about all the times Pakistan lost?

He was probably drunk.
Said a couple of other things that didn’t make sense, for example, he said, this was the only India Pak game that I couldn’t play in the ground.

This comment shouldn't be ignored, put it in the two nation theory concept . It will become crystal clear.

Btw he might be just echoing the general pakistani sentiment, who knows ?

Just few days ago , on a program hosted by india today group Harbhajan made a comment that why do we fight we are the same people Shoaib Akhtar retorted because i and my country beleive in two nation theory . You get the drift. So this ignorance business is futile you also see it as it is, nothing more nothing less.

I think nobody should bring religion in sports.

I totally agree, these are very silly comments. Every one has right to his own belief and rituals unless they hurt others.

if your religion requires you to hate others or teach you hate and superiority complex against others, then it is time to change yourself and look into your attitude

This is a trend and curse due to hyper-religiosity in subcontinent starting from pak and now wave spreading through out india.

What? I don't have anything to do with this. Always said he was a batsman and captaincy candidate for the future. Way better than the previous generations of Akmal and Sarfraz.

Secondly, addressing the "has been tried before" thing, you don't have to take my word for it, just watch Hayden's interview with Fox Sports the other day. He's an outsider that has no real understanding or sympathy for the spiritual ways, yet he even acknowledged that the thing that had him in most awe over the last 5 weeks was the collective spirituality of the team and the fact players were willing to embrace that spirituality publicly and unabashedly. That was one of the sources of motivation and what bred energy into the team. He also attributed their spirituality as the reason why they "were humble post-Victory in the dressing room".

I don't think you know much about Hayden - he's one of the most devout kumbayah people out there. More so since retirement.

Dumb comments.

Sheikh Rashid is playing to his audience.

I do not know what Waqar was thinking.

Vast majority of educated Pakistani do not believe in above comments as it is evident by the posts on this thread.

Ridiculous statement from the failed coach Waqar Younus. Thank God he is out of the role.

Waqar Y was caught drink driving. And here he is insulting others, what an idiot. I support Riz reading namaz but this is just ridiculous.

Rizwan praying in the middle of the ground in the most heated biggest rivalry of all time in cricket is the best moment I have witnessed in any sports.

He topped Khabib's meltdown after Gaetjche

Rizwan is next Kaaptan material :amla

Hoping this is the final nail in the coffin of Waqar Younis’s career as a coach for Pakistan in any capacity

Goes to show you that you can be a legend of the game, but a complete tool when it comes to all things besides it. What a moronic thing to say on national tv, and straight away you saw the cringe on kashif abbasi's face and entirety. Some of these legends of past, like i have said many a times before, need to stay far away from the tv/media. How he coached this team for so long is beyond me.

These comments come from Waqar and Shoaib doesn’t surprise me a bit. Waqar is a incapable coach and dumb is well, he was lucky to be talented otherwise he would be doing god knows what. Then we have Shoaib Akhtar, how can someone even take him seriously? One of the dumbest cricketers on youtube who thinks he knows everything while he is proven wrong time after time.

Religion should never ever be dragged in to sport. I am a pakistani and muslim but i hated always when our pakistani captains began with, “ sub se pehle allah ka sukar hai” I mean i dont hear other cricketing nations beginning with something like that. Ofcourse you should be grateful but that doesn’t mean you have to repeat that phrase and drag religion in to it.

Gambhir, Sehwag has proved this point time and again to us too.

Problem is fans on both sides put these guys on such pedestal that they don't feel ashamed of airing their disgusting views and back it to the hilt.

Doubt anybody wud try that - they wud get roasted by the left liberals and secularists. There is reason Indian cricketers do not show off religious side during matches

actually right thing to do. Not a fan of overt religiosity on a sports field

Ridiculous words by Waqar. This is just a game. No less, no more. The prayer part of Rizwan is his personal obligation. Out of the game. These two things shouldn't be intertwined by ex cricketers and experts.

Disgraceful.

But then again everything about Waqar has always been a disgrace other than his bowling.

Waqar’s lost it, what a horrible thing to say. Cheap statements like this take away the shine off this victory.

I don’t share his sentiments.

Thanks for saying so. But no, Indian shouldn't do that.

Pakistani fans on PP have been very humble in their victory and its really praiseworthy.same cannot be said about some of your cricketers and politicians.

Ex-cricketers from both sides have been d****.

Just check Sehwag crying about the “no ball” when KL Rahul was dismissed.

Oh God!

What jaahil people we have in our country! This is such an embarrassing thing to say.

Mr Waqar. You have people following you in Asia and around, may be as a role model for some. I am left with no admiration for you at all after this statement.

Idiotic comments from a legendary player, sad to see him go down the jihadi route. He needs to apologize ASAP.

Forget India or Indians, how does this make Hindus in Pakistan feel?

Ridiculous comment by Waqar, why ruin the goodwill after the victory when even indian fans appreciated our win and the way pakistani and indian players interacted with each other afterwards.

Clearly Waqar doesnt speak for everyone so i refute this statement, its only a game calm down.

Waqar used to be one of my favorite bowlers for a while. The first time the sheen began to wear off was when I heard a story by Wasim Akram that when Kumble was going for his 10th, Waqar said, let's get run out to prevent it. It was a surprising thing as I never imagined him to be like that.

But it seems like, beneath the veneer of casualness, there's an uncouth guy lurking :)

This guy has put Gambhir and Sehwag to shame. They'll need to step up their game to match him.

Pakistan have Waqar and Shoaib whilst India have Gautam and Shewag......im glad that the majority of pakistani fans dont agree with these stupid comments.

The comment might not be apt but he has no reason to apologise. It's Shami who deserves an apology from Indian Hindutvas. That's right folks, WY's comments are a followup to the rise in Islamophobia in India following India's humiliating defeat.

India sees spike in Islamophobia after heavy defeat against Pakistan : https://www.independent.co.uk/asia/india/india-vs-pakistan-cricket-mohammed-shami-b1944707.html

Agree.

Waqar made insensitive comments and almost every Pakistani on this forum criticized him for that.

But it is Shami who deserve an apology from Indian Hindutva and collectively from every Indian to propagate hate by electing politician who thrives on hate-driven agenda against minorities in India.

Sooner or later icc should ban this now. Praying is mot an issue, but when suxh stupid statements are made and than what if indian team tries to retaliate and decides to do their own religious rituals in response to suxh stupid comments.

We pakistanis like to do oamga and when rules are made than we cry thay we are being stopped from preaching our religion.

And Waqar’s comments played right into the hands of those taking part in islamophobia. They can simply say don’t look at just us look at their words too.

written by "Alisha Rahaman Sarkar"...ok....these rats sitting at Reuters, BBC, AFP, Independent etcetera can go on write as many propaganda articles as they like...nobody gives a fu**
yesterday some Qureshi guy from AFP who apparently lives in Islamabad also wrote similar article :))):)))

I watched the interview It wasnt suggested in the way its been potrayed More emphasising his character n nature that he would pray on the field than muslims vs hindus

But yes its something that shouldnt have been brought up Its best to keep religion out of india vs pakistan games

Ravi you are the last person to be offended by this, BCCI and indians are known for their racism towards Pakistan. Take this as a reply for all the racism from 2010 and onwards Alhamdullilah #Pakistan has thrashed #India by 10 wickets :inzi

I'm not going to quote Waqar, but he is genuinely apologetic about this.

Poor statement from Waqar. Did not expect this from him. People need to understand that we live in a world of social media, anything you say can come back and bite you.

I hope he posts an apology for his words.

No Gambhir and Sehwag s racism is very well known to everyone for a long period of time, if Waqar said that stuff chin up and take it as reply rather than getting emotional:sarf

Do you see any devout Hindu in Indian team? Like they care?
Does Waqar believe Indian cricketers have never seen anyone offering namaz in India, with 15% Muslim population.

they disagree outside but inside their hearts, they more than agree :55::55:

projecting your hate toward Indian minorities - I've noticed this as an excuse used by many RSS in an attempt to give weight to justify their hate toward minorities of India.

I don't think racism is right word as Sehwag and Waqar are same caste and race, Both are Jat. Waqar is Maitla Jat, former Dogra Rajput clan, who converted to Islam during the rule of Firuz Shah Tughlaq, and settled in Sialkot.

Gambhir is a Khatri like Kohli and Kapoor's in Bollywood, again they all trace their roots in Pakistan.

I'm not going to quote Waqar, but he is genuinely apologetic about this.

Seems like he didnt think when he was saying it but am sure knows that it wasn't a wise thing to do.

Are you projecting your hate for the minorities of your country on others.
