[VIDEOS] Shreyas Iyer - India's middle-order batting sensation

Shreyas Iyer dropped from BCCI annual contract list for 2023-24

Most runs for India since 2022:

3483 - V Kohli (49.7 avg)
3381 - S Gill (47.6 avg)
3268 - R Sharma (38.9 avg)
2703 - S Iyer (43.5 avg)
2554 - SK Yadav (37 avg)

Do you think Shreyas Iyer's omission is justified?

India's batting legend, Sunil Gavaskar, in his column for the local magazine, pointed out:

"He did miss the quarter-finals, but that was also the time he had informed the team management of his inability to play the third Test match due to some pain in his back if he batted for some length of time. However, the trainers at the NCA certified that his markers were clean and they found him fit to play. That seemed to have gone against Iyer. Threshold of pain is an individual thing and no trainer can judge that."

KKR captain Shreyas Iyer faced a double blow as his team not only lost the match against Rajasthan Royals but also incurred a heavy fine. He was fined Rs 12 lakh for a slow over rate against Rajasthan, as stated in the IPL press release. This was his team's first offense of the season under the IPL Code of Conduct related to the minimum over rate.

In the match, KKR scored 223 runs, courtesy of Sunil Narine's stormy century. Rajasthan, in reply, initially struggled at 121 runs for the loss of 6 wickets but was propelled to victory by Jos Buttler's unbeaten century.

Reflecting on the loss, Iyer remarked, "It is difficult to explain what happened. We have to face it and move on. I'm glad it happened now and not at the end of the tournament. The important thing is that we learn from our mistakes and come back stronger." He also mentioned the strategy to counter Buttler's aggressive batting, stating, "Buttler was hitting the ball easily, so I thought let's reduce the speed of the ball and give it to Varun Chakraborty. But he played the big shot."

Despite the loss, there was no change in the points table. KKR remains in second place with four wins in six matches, while Rajasthan Royals lead with six wins in seven matches.

Speaking to the media ahead of the IPL 2024 final, Shreyas Iyer admitted to struggling in the Test format, but reckoned that his focus throughout IPL was to give his best performance irrespective of the outside noise:

“I was definitely struggling after the World Cup, in terms of the longer format. When I raised my concern, no one was agreeing to it. But at the sane time the competition is with myself. When IPL was approaching, all I wanted to see to it that I can put my best foot forward and whatever planning or strategising we did before, we executed it to the best of our abilities. The transformation from red-ball cricket to white-ball is difficult as a batsman, but once you get used to it, you match with the other teams.”

Former Chief Selector MSK Prasad recently spoke about the time his selection committee invested in Iyer. The young India player was expected to replace Virat Kohli and Rohit as a captain, but unfortunate injuries put him behind on the list.

“We had a succession plan ready for captaincy. We were looking for a player who could lead India post the MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma eras. Shreyas Iyer was groomed, and he led India A in close to ten series, winning eight. We invested in him, unlike Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja.

“He was unfortunately injured, and Rishabh Pant did well during that time. Prior to that, Iyer was Delhi Capitals‘ captain, and working under the coaching of Ricky Ponting helped him. He did a good thing by joining Kolkata Knight Riders and was helped by the franchise. He looked at ease there. With young players like Iyer, you need a better support system to help them in leadership duties. I am sure Shreyas Iyer will become a good captain in two or three years,”

Shreyas is currently out of the Indian team and was not considered for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The BCCI did not offer him a new central contract after the batter refused to play domestic cricket.

Shreyas Iyer Spotted Training as India Batter Eyes Reunion With Gautam Gambhir Ahead of Sri Lanka Tour

India batter, Shreyas Iyer seems to be putting in the work as a video surfaced of the Indian Premier League-winning captain training on a race track despite the inclement weather that was on display.

He was seen taking part in a training session which took place in Mumbai as he eyes a possible comeback in international colours. Iyer gained a lot of plaudits after he led the Kolkata Knight Riders to claim their third title in the IPL 2024.

His batting has also seen significant improvement where despite being shifted up and down the order, he was able to play according to the situation to put the team in a better position.

The 29-year-old who is hitting his athletic prime was denied a central contract which was released on February 2024 following a poor show in the home Test series against England which led to him being dropped.

Following his central-contract exclusion, he has not been part of the Indian set-up even in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 winning squad.

It was suggested that miscommunication is the reason why Iyer has been out of international action despite playing a big role in India’s ODI World Cup 2023 run through to the final.

He had undergone back surgery in 2023 and with the help of the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, he was able to get back to his best which then led to him leading KKR to the coveted title.

Another interesting aspect is the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as the Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. The former India opener was a part of the very same KKR set-up as a mentor and it could be a possibility that he could make a case for Iyer receiving a call-up.

India’s upcoming assignment is the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka where the two sides will take on a 3-match T20I and ODI Series which will begin on July 26, 2024.

The BCCI is yet to announce the squad that will be part of this tour and with the openings in the T20I squad following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Iyer will be gunning for an international comeback.

As per media reports, Shreyas Iyer will return to international cricket with the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. The apex body of Indian cricket will include him in the contract list after he is included in the side for the fifty-over games.

Could be bad news for Indian fans. The guy sucks against genuine pace & in particular against short pitched stuff. Overrated batter.

He was not able to buy a run in sa odi series against burger and co.defies logic, they should bring atleast jaiswal /pant/ Sai in his place .Sa pitches are 275 ish .so we need a good player who can bat against pace and in tough situations

He’s Gambhir’s KKR wonder child so no surprise that he’s back in contention. Ideal opportunity for stat padding against his favourite opposition…

Yeah he'll likely come out this with record scores but it'll tell us nothing about whether he's one for the future. Guess he'll be useful in the Champions Trophy if we're going to play it in Sri Lanka, UAE or (unlikely) Pakistan. We can take stock after that.

Not really. People can do their post hoc analysis about favoritism et al but in Indian cricket the level of competition for batters is insane.

If any other Asian batter had had a WC campaign like Shreyas including a 70 ball hundred in a knockout game he would have been a white ball captaincy shoo in and trending towards being picked in country's all time XI, forget present day.

Ishan Kishan scored a double in ODIs and he got put on squad reserves and that too only because Pant was out. Even in Aus today Ishan would be the all format lock for keeper batter, let alone tier 2 teams.

Ruturaj would also walk into probably 8 of the top 10 teams today as an all format opener but in India he is firmly 4th choice behind Rohit, Gill, Yashasvi and barely gets a game.

Selectors are not being unfair. It is just the way things are for ICT batters. Guys like Sanju have made their peace with it and focused on keeping themselves ready for whenever they get called upon. The others also should adopt such mentality.

At the end of the day reality is its about resource depth.

Today Venky Iyer is closer to being in an India squad than Ishan or Gaikwad simply because his skillset as batter who bowls seam up is so rare in India. If he has one good IPL/domestic season where he's chipping overs in and either of Dube/Pandya loses fitness or form he comes straight into XI.

Iyer has earned his spot after fabulous performance in World cup 2023, I understand that he is not suitable for SA pitches where the next world cup is but as of now the eyes are on Champions trophy and on Asian pitches he is up there with the very best, can accelerate as well as build partnerships on low bounce tracks.

Nothing wrong with his selection

Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel:

"It's interesting that last time when we beat Bangladesh in Bangladesh, Shreyas Iyer gave a very important performance in the last match. We won because he played a crucial knock, but since then, the world has changed. I don't see any chances for Shreyas Iyer in Tests at the moment."

"Whoever is there will also not be able to play all the matches. The guys who are part of this team, which includes Sarfaraz, KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel, I feel they only won't be able to come in the XI. So where will Shreyas Iyer come in this?"

Shreyas Iyer’s Unbeaten 152 Drives Mumbai To 385/3 Against Odisha

Shreyas Iyer returned to Ranji Trophy with another cracking 152 not out to power Mumbai to a dominating 385/3 against Odisha in their Elite Group A clash’s first day, here on Wednesday.

Iyer found strong support from Siddhesh Lad, who made 116 not out (234 balls, 14x4s) as the two middle-order batters tore into the Odisha bowling, putting on 231 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket stand.

India batter Iyer’s belligerent knock off 164 balls included 18 fours and four sixes and this was his second consecutive ton in Ranji Trophy this season as he scored 142 in his previous appearance.

Iyer and Lad came together when Mumbai were rocked twice in quick succession by Biplab Samantaray, who denied Angkrish Raghuvanshi (92 off 124 balls, 13x4s, 3x6s) his maiden ton and trapped skipper Ajinkya Rahane leg-before for a golden duck.

Shreyas Iyer Scores 233 Runs For Mumbai In Ranji Trophy Match Against Odisha

Star Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, who was not included in India’s 18-member squad picked for the upcoming five-match Test series against Australia, registered his best score in First Class cricket on Thursday (November 7) by scoring 233 runs for Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match against Odisha. The 29-year-old right-handed batter came out to bat at No. 5 for the Ajinkya Rahane-led side at Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy BKC in Mumbai, and during his 228-ball stay at the crease, he hammered 24 fours and nine sixes.

He added 354 runs for the fourth wicket with Siddhesh Lad, who was unbeaten on 165 runs from 331 balls at the time of lunch on Day 2.

Shreyas Iyer to lead Punjab Kings

The Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings announced Shreyas Iyer as their captain. The right-handed batter roped in by the franchise at the auctions in December 2024 will rejoin hands with Head Coach Ricky Ponting to lead the franchise.

The 30-year-old expressed gratitude to the Punjab Kings management. "I am honoured that the team has reposed its faith in me. I am looking forward to working again with Coach Ponting. The team looks strong, with a great mix of potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title"

Head Coach Ricky said, "Shreyas has a great mind for the game. His proven capabilities as captain will enable the team to deliver. I have enjoyed my time with Iyer in the past in IPl, and I look forward to working with him again. With his leadership and the talent in the squad, I am excited about the seasons ahead."

Punjab Kings CEO Satish Menon added, "We had identified Shreyas as our captain and were delighted with the auction result. He has already proven himself to master the format, and his vision for the team aligns perfectly with our goals. With him and Ponting joining hands again, we are confident our team has a solid leadership group to guide us to our first title."

In 2024, Iyer had a banner year. He was part of the Mumbai team that won the Ranji and Irani trophy. He captained Kolkata Knight Riders in their victorious 2024 IPL campaign. Under his leadership, Mumbai won their second Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy.

Shreyas Iyer while talking to a sports media outlet:

"I'm flexible and ready to bat anywhere in the batting order."

"KL and I, we played that important role in the middle during the World Cup. We had a great season together. It was just the last bit [the final] that we couldn't execute the way we wanted to."

"It will be a proud moment for me if I were to be picked in the Champions Trophy [side] to represent the country."

Shreyas actually did well with 500+ runs including a semifinal century, Rahul failed horribly in the most important match, so don't have much praise for him.

‘Ready to bat anywhere’ - India batter throws hat in the ring for ICC Men’s Champions Trophy

Having played a pivotal anchor role during India’s campaign at the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup, Shreyas Iyer is keen to take the responsibility in the middle order for the upcoming tournament.

Iyer, who scored 530 runs from 11 outings at the previous Cricket World Cup at home, has declared that he can bat anywhere in the Indian lineup come the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025.

A mainstay in the Indian ODI setup, Iyer has batted in different positions in the middle-order and has been among the consistent performers for the team since his debut in December 2017.

Speaking to ESPN Cricinfo, Iyer said, “I'm flexible and ready to bat anywhere in the batting order.

“KL (Rahul) and I, we played that important role in the middle during the World Cup. We had a great season together. It was just the last bit (the final against Australia) that we couldn't execute the way we wanted to.

“It will be a proud moment for me if I were to be picked in the Champions Trophy (squad) to represent the country.”

Boasting an average of 47.5, Iyer has scored 2421 runs in 62 ODIs, comprising five centuries and 18 fifties.

At the 2023 Men’s Cricket World Cup, the flamboyant right-handed batter scored consecutive tons - including in the semifinal - as India marched to the final unbeaten. The 30-year-old finished only behind Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the runs tally for the hosts.

Iyer last played international cricket back in August during India’s tour of Sri Lanka - a three-ODI series.

The Champions Trophy begins from February 19. India are slotted alongside New Zealand, Bangladesh and Pakistan in Group A.

Shreyas Iyer post 1st ODI against England during his interaction with broadcasters:

"I wasn't in the team so I was watching a movie last night and planned on sleeping very late. Then suddenly Rohit came to my room and told me Virat won't be playing tomorrow so you need to go to sleep (laughs)."

Iyer's cameo provides India with Champions Trophy headache

An outstanding innings from Shreyas Iyer leaves India selectors with much to ponder less than two weeks out from the start of the Champions Trophy.

Experienced batter Shreyas Iyer showcased his capabilities with a superb half-century against England on Thursday as question marks surround the make-up of India's batting line-up at the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

Iyer was in a devastating mood as he smashed 59 from just 36 deliveries as India successfully chased down England's modest total of 248 in Nagpur with more than 11 overs remaining to go 1-0 up in the five-game series.

The innings only came about due to the absence of Virat Kohli, with the former skipper nursing a sore knee and rested from the contest and Iyer included at the last minute after receiving a phone call from captain Rohit Sharma.

"So, funny story," Iyer told Star Sports post-match. "I was watching a movie last night, I thought I could extend my night, but then I got a call from skipper saying that you may play because Virat has got a swollen knee. And then (I) hurried back to my room, went off to sleep straightaway."

"I wasn't supposed to play the first game, Virat unfortunately got injured and then I got the opportunity. But I kept myself prepared, I knew that at any point of time I can get a chance to play.

"The same thing happened with me last year as well during the Asia Cup. I got injured and someone else came and he scored a century."

While the extent of Kohli's knee injury is yet to be fully diagnosed, his impending return for the remainder of the series against England and for the Champions Trophy leaves India with a wealth of riches in their batting line-up as they attempt to squeeze in all their in-form players.

Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made his ODI debut against England and looks likely to be in the mix to play at the Champions Trophy purely because he is the only left-hander in the top-order, while Shubman Gill looked in excellent touch in Nagpur as he helped himself to an excellent innings of 87 and the Player of the Match award.

India also have the experienced trio of KL Rahul, Rohit and Kohli to squeeze into their best XI, with all-rounders Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja other options that will be considered for the middle-order during the eight-team tournament in Pakistan and the UAE.

But Iyer has the runs on the board having contributed 530 runs at the most recent edition of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in 2023, with the 30-year-old crediting his recent efforts at domestic level for helping him shine against England.

“To be honest, I played throughout the domestic season, it taught me a lot and gave me a decent idea about how to approach my innings, the attitude I have to keep and it's just the mindset that I've improved over a period of time,” he said.

“Also, from the skills point of view, you need to upgrade yourself, elevate and keep learning every now and then. I think I ticked all the boxes right and also my fitness played an important role."

Good innings by Iyer. These are the kind of enforcers which are needed in middle order and not stat padders like Kohli & Rahul.

Best batting averages at No. 4 in ODIs after the 2019 World Cup (Min. 1000 runs)

56.68 – Shai Hope (1,077 runs)
52.60 – Shreyas Iyer (1,578 runs)
48.39 – Harry Tector (1,839 runs)
46.46 – Mohammad Rizwan (1,487 runs)
44.90 – Aiden Markram (1,437 runs)

From batting on 14 off 30 at one stage, Shreyas Iyer brings up a fifty off 63 balls.

The most reliable middle-order batter India has in this era.

Out of 54 batters with 1500+ ODI runs at No.4, only seven average 50+, and just one has a strike rate over 100—Shreyas Iyer.

1728 runs | 52.3 Avg | 101.5 SR

India long struggled for a dependable No.4, but Iyer didn’t just fill the role—he mastered it.

Great guy to have on your team. India surely needed him and he is delivering. He just needs to work more on his game against short ball, rest is all good.

He is backbone of our middle order . Proper number four Player in odi cricket.

@RedwoodOriginal remembered our discussion about Indian champion trophy team prior to selection , you said iyer is not suitable at number 4 but I said he is best for us at this position

Once rohits retires after ct, Captiancy struggle will be between iyer and gill.who ever can contribute an impactful performance in the finals will have huge advantage. As of now iyer is leading and gill is completely a failure like his previous odi wc .

I respect him
Even with short ball issue he is so mentally tough that he can make a difference
Well played
I guess continue

He seems to be nz killer though

I am still not convinced if we should play him in SA conditions and AUs conditions though

In nz he will be fine. Weirdly enough he is very good there

In England I don’t know.

Other places he is elite

So only question is SA, AUs conditions really and perhaps England

Got to learn to finish things.

For a middle order he is almost always never there to finish it.

He has definitely worked on his weaknesses against the short ball. I saw the comms. pointing out that he has even made some technical changes to his feet position. Credit to him because he has been great for India at 4 in this tournament.

That said, the steepness and bounce of a short ball in UAE is very different to the steepness and bounce of a short ball in Australia or South Africa. So let's see how he does outside Asia when the time comes.
