all these boys are the future.

Just have to back the right guy for right format. That is where India messed up big time. Playing guys like Rahane, Rayudu in the one dayers. Playing Pandey in T20.

Shreyas Iyer, scoring his maiden ODI century against New Zealand in the first ODI at Hamilton, once again proved his mettle in the middle order for India. In his own words, his success has come owing to his flexible batting positions between Nos. 3 to 5 for the India A team, where he learned the art of tackling various situations.

Iyer scored 103 from 107 balls, hitting 11 fours and a six before being dismissed by New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner. He helped India to a fighting total of 347, but owing to Tom Latham and Ross Taylor’s performances, the hosts chased down the target and won the match by four wickets.

“In India A, it’s not that I have to bat number four all the time. You keep changing your position depending on what is the situation. I got to manoeuvre my place from 3 to 5, I kept changing (batting order). It’s just that we get good practice there and you face different opposition as well so you get used to the atmosphere,” said Iyer.

For someone who had to wait for his opportunity to cement his place in the senior team, the interim duration spent on A tours was an important learning curve.

“India A games have always been helpful for me personally because whenever I used to go there, I used to make sure that as many matches I got, I have to make the best use of it and the players and the atmosphere is also amazing. You literally have no pressure,” Iyer said about the team mentored by NCA director Rahul Dravid.

“And coming from the top arena (senior) to one level below (A team) doesn’t make you feel that you are completely away from the team but you always see similar faces around you. I really enjoy that atmosphere like I said,” he said.

Iyer scored his maiden ODI hundred but Indian bowlers failed to defend a target of 348 with Ross Taylor scoring a match-winning hundred. With six half-centuries and a hundred with an average of 48 plus in 16 ODIs, Iyer has had a good time in the Indian middle order.

“I am very happy but would have been happier if we could have finished the game on a winning note. First of many (centuries) I hope, so I would take this in my stride and try to make sure that next time, I finish on the winning side,” Iyer said at the post-match press conference.

The right-hander had a 102-run stand with skipper Virat Kohli and 136-run association with KL Rahul.

Asked about the nature of track, Iyer said:”It was stopping and coming. There wasn’t any variable bounce on the wicket. We just decided that we needed to take this phase and build a partnership.

“I’m really happy the way I planned my innings. I was keeping my patience and I had that self-belief that once I cross that certain mark, I will be able to cover up for all the dot balls I faced and I was really happy,” he explained his gameplan.

He felt that batting did become easier in the second innings.

“If you see, the wicket had improved quite a bit in the second innings. The ball was coming on to the bat and the dew factor played an important role too in this game. They batted really well, and you have to give them credit.

“If you look at it, 348 is not an easy chase but the way they planned their innings, with one guy anchoring it and the rest playing cameos. Credit to them for the way they scored, and it was a very good win for them,” he added.

The best bet for India is to play with this XI.

Rohit
Dhawan
Kohli
Iyer
Rahul(wkt)
Pant/Pandey
Pandya
Jadeja
Chahal
Shami
Bumrah

I know it's just five bowling options but I would still not pick Jadhav or Dube over a Rishabh Pant or Manish Pandey(Pandey because he saves a lot of runs with field)

India batsman Shreyas Iyer continued his rich vein of form and slammed a fine half-century against New Zealand in the third and final ODI at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Tuesday. Iyer has now slammed eight fifties and one century in 17 matches and his average reads in excess of 49 while his strike rate is better than run-a-ball. Courtesy of his latest fifty, Iyer surpassed former Australia cricketer Ian Chappell’s mark to set a new world record.

Iyer now holds the record for best percentage of 50+ scores in ODIs. The right-hander has nine 50+ scores in 16 innings in 50-over format and his percentage reads 56.25. Earlier, the record was held by Chappell, who had eight 50+ scores in 16 innings.

Highest percentage of 50+ scores (min. 10 innings)

56.2 (9/16): Shreyas Iyer (IND)

50.0 (8/16): Ian Chappell (AUS)

50.0 (5/10): Aaqib Ilyas (OMN)

44.5 (8/18): Anshuman Rath (HK)

43.7 (7/16): Rassie van der Dussen (SA)

India have faced a conundrum to designate a permanent batsman at the crucial number position in the past. The side has experimented with MS Dhoni, Rishabh Pant, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik in recent times but Iyer seems to have consolidated his spot as India’s No. 4, and stats also back-up these claims.

After the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final, Iyer has recorded the best batting average among all the players who have been tried in this position. Iyer has scored runs at an average of 56.80 which is more than Dinesh Karthik (52.80), MS Dhoni (45.00), Ambati Rayudu (42.18) and Ajinkya Rahane (35.00).

Since 2019, Iyer also has the 5th best batting average among all the players who have batted at least 5 innings at no.4 position in the ODIs across the world.

Iyer seemed a bit miffed today, maybe because his ego was hurt for being dropped in the last match. He definitely sealed the door for Manish pandey for a while with today's innings. Pandey has only himself to blame.

I'm willing to open myself for a future @Bhaag_Viru_Bhaag-type humiliation :rishabhpant

Dislaimer - I've pretty much watched snatches of him only in national colours.

I'm aware he's some kind of an IPL hero, but this guy reminds me of a Ravi Bopara level player. Plays some attractive shots - the straight hits even look Kohliesque. But you just know and so does he, that he will only score when it really doesn't matter. He needs to be allowed to ply his trade in the IPL and leave the national team to players who can actually win games. I saw full replays of that Tewatia guy in the last IPL and I'd take him over Iyer for the WC.

In the unlikely event that Iyer humiliates an internet nobody like me, I'll take the small pleasure that India won the game. Unlike some others :inti

Where have I humiliated myself? I gave a prediction that Pant will end his career with a below 30 average. Has he retired yet? Plenty of series and years still left. Calm down. :inti

Iyer, Rahul, Mayank, Manish , Samson- somehow this generation is most lackluster imo I have no faith in them to win anything.

Played well today but still not sold on him yet for some reason....

But he should be backed nevertheless. Not gonna hate on a youngster and make sweeping wishful statements on how his career would pan out like a sore loser.. :inti

Yes he should be backed. Fans and team management should definitely not discard him like they did with Prithvi Shaw. :inti

Iyer, Rahul, Mayank, Manish , Samson- somehow this generation is most lackluster imo I have no faith in them to win anything.

This generation has already won in Aus, stop spreading this negativity everywhere.

Manish is from Kohli's U19 batch. Samson isn't even a top level performer in domestic cricket. He won't get opportunities in other formats.

Iyer and Agarwal haven't got long runs.

This generation will dominate world cricket because now we have much better bowling than our previous teams.

It's laughable when 90s era fans call current team player lackluster

If it makes you feel any better 90s was lackluster as well.

Also my opinion was only on those players- my expectations are better(now) from Pant, washi,Gill,Devdutt,Jaisval set...

90s era fans also watched greatest Aussie team, best South African team ever, Pakistan's and Sri Lanka's best line up and not so bad West Indian side. Not to mention Zimbabwe side who wouldn't let any team (except Aus) win comfortably in Zim. NZ was always a dark horse . This generation has seen nothing of that sort so joke is on you, not us. :inti

I don't think he's a bad batsman at all, slight issues with the short ball but those concerns are overstated in white ball cricket.

Indian batting standards might be high, but it wasn't that long ago that Indian fans had to withstand watching Vijay Shankar, Ambati Rayudu, Dinesh Karthik, and Kedhar Jadhav attempt to bat in the middle order.

He is a good batsman, especially for ODIs and based on small sample size, he generally thrives in pressure situation and suits best in situations like 20/2 or 25/3 because he can take some time to get his eyes in and then go with the flow.

One problem with him in T20s is that even after getting set, he doesn't really change gear enough to make a difference of 15-20 runs in final overs.

The likes of Pant, Pandya, KL, Rohit and Kishan once they are set will really go berserk in final overs. Shreyas can't do that. But one good thing with him is that he doesn't bat selfishly and I don't see that changing in next 2-3 years atleast.

You are not wrong in criticizing any of those 5 players you have mentioned because they have not any special till now. But you need to understand that every generation has had players who were unsuccessful. You gave example of Pandey who was from Kohli's U19 bhai so how did this generation gap thing come here?

Anyways, it's good to see that you have expectations from our youngsters but please keep patience with them.

If he is playing in T20s he needs to bat in the top 3, that is unlikely to happen due to the top 3 India have. I think for ODIs he definitely deserves his place. A really good player.

Indian international Shreyas Iyer joins Lancashire Cricket

Lancashire Cricket is delighted to announce the overseas signing of Indian international batsman Shreyas Iyer for the 2021 Royal London Cup.

Iyer will arrive at Emirates Old Trafford on Thursday 15 July ahead of the start of the 50 over tournament and will remain with the Red Rose for the duration of the month-long group stage.

The top-order batsman is regarded as one of the most attacking and fluent stroke players in the Indian ranks and has played in 50 One-Day and T20 Internationals for his Country.

26-year-old Iyer is a star name of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and captained Delhi Capitals to the final last year crashing 519 runs - the fourth highest in the tournament – at a strike rate of 123. Following the conclusion of the last IPL, Iyer played in all three matches of India’s ODI series in Australia and is currently part of the ongoing India series against England.

In total, Iyer has scored over 6,000 One-Day runs across his career so far hitting nine centuries. He averages just short of 45 in ODI cricket with eight fifties and a century to his name, since debuting in 2017.

The signing of Shreyas Iyer signals the latest step in Lancashire’s long association with Indian cricket, which stretches back more than 50 years when Indian International wicketkeeper batsman Farokh Engineer joined the county in 1968. He would go on to become a Lancashire legend and now serves as a Vice-President of the Club. Since Engineer retired, four further Indian Internationals – Murali Kartik, Dinesh Mongia, V.V.S. Laxman and Sourav Ganguly – have represented the Red Rose with distinction. In addition to this, legendary Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar hit his maiden Test Century at Emirates Old Trafford in August 1990.

More recently, Lancashire Cricket has continued its multi-layered strategic relationship by hosting last year’s pre-season training camp in Mumbai and, in a first for an English County, during 2020 Lancashire Cricket matches were streamed live to Indian fans on the subcontinent via the popular JioTV.

In anticipation of the England v India Test Match Series at Emirates Old Trafford from 10-14 September, and as celebration of Shreyas’ arrival, Lancashire Cricket will be hosting a special Indian Summer events schedule during 2021. A series of cultural events will take place that aim to bring the energy and excitement that Indian cricket supporters are famous for to Emirates Old Trafford on a regular basis.

Speaking after agreeing to join Lancashire for the 2021 Royal London Cup, Shreyas said: “Lancashire is a legendary name in English Cricket with a long-standing association with Indian Cricket. I am extremely humbled and honoured to carry the legacy forward of greats like Farokh Engineer, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman at Lancashire.

“Emirates Old Trafford is a world class international stadium and I am looking forward to meeting my teammates and the supporters of the Club.”

Lancashire’s Director of Cricket, Paul Allott, added: “Shreyas is one of the shining lights of a new generation of Indian batsman and a leader, and we’re delighted that an opportunity to bring him to Emirates Old Trafford has presented itself.

“With the expectation that we will be fielding a younger side in this year’s Royal London Cup due to the Hundred, it was important that we brought in a top-order batsman with experience at the highest level to enhance our prospects in the tournament.

“Shreyas has experience of captaining in an IPL final as well as playing in top level international fixtures, so his on-field skills, and ability to remain calm in high pressure situations, will serve our young squad well this summer.

“His current form against England has been hugely impressive and we’re looking forward to welcoming him to Lancashire Cricket and Emirates Old Trafford later this summer.

“We hope that this signing will reward Members’ patience for not being able to attend Lancashire fixtures last year and demonstrates our continued commitment across all three domestic competitions this summer.”

Lancashire Cricket will kick off their Royal London Cup campaign at home to Sussex on Friday 23 July, with a friendly fixture against Cumberland CCC on Tuesday 20 July.

Hmm what matches will he play for them? Can he join in August to play test series?

Hmm what matches will he play for them? Can he join in August to play test series?

Royals London Cup is a 50-overs limited series, so it is an ODI tournament and can help him for ODI matches which I feel is his best format.

Shreyas Iyer subluxated his left shoulder in the 8th over while fielding. He has been taken for further scans and won't take any further part in the game. (1st ODI vs England)

Shreyas Iyer will not only miss the remainder of the England ODI series but also the entire season of the upcoming IPL 2021 after dislocating his shoulder during the series opener on Tuesday. Iyer, while diving during the eighth over of the England innings in his attempt to stop a drive from Jonny Bairstow, hurt his shoulder and left the field while clutching his left shoulder.

There was initial reports that Iyer, who captains Delhi Capitals in IPL, may have to miss the first part of the T20 competition. However, as per news agency PTI, the middle-order batsman will have to undergo surgery which may push him to the side-lines for a minimum four months before he can start practicing again.

“He will have to go under the knife. So, it looks not just the first part of IPL but Iyer will miss the entire IPL. It might take a minimum four months before he can hit the nets again. He has been under severe pain,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.

The 26-year-old was taken for scans after his injury in the first ODI. “Shreyas Iyer subluxated (partially dislocated) his left shoulder in the 8th over while fielding. He has been taken for further scans,” BCCI had said.

India went on to win the contest by 66 runs with the second ODI to be played on Friday.

The latest development has also jeopardised his participation in England’s domestic one-day competition for Lancashire.

Iyer led Delhi Capitals to their maiden IPL final last season where they lost to Mumbai Indians. Should he miss the league this time around, the captaincy could be handed over to either Rishabh Pant, Ravichandran Ashwin or Australian Steve Smith.

DC will take on three-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings in their tournament opener on April 10 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

Sad news for him.

4 months would mean missing out on Lancashire stint too.

The moment they said dislocated shoulder i knew it is a long road to recovery and he is out for atleast 3-4 months, these are serious injuries, still some stupid media reports were saying that he will be back for 2nd half of IPL as if dislocated shoulder is a joke.

Del Potro (tennis player) injured his knee back in 2018 and is yet to fully recover, undergoing a 4th surgery now. These injuries can be career threatening. I hope for Shreyas that he recovers fully and fast.

India batsman Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of his Lancashire stint for the Royal London Cup as he continues his recovery from a shoulder injury. Iyer was supposed to arrive in Manchester on July 15 and stay for the duration of the month-long group stage, but a shoulder injury he sustained during the home series against England has ruled him out.

“I am gutted to not be able to play for Lancashire this summer, a Club that has such history and ambition. I hope to play at Emirates Old Trafford for Lancashire at some point in the future," Iyer said.

I Could Potentially be The Last Person To Do It: James Anderson's Reaction After 1,000 First-Class Wickets

Director of Cricket, Paul Allott said: “We are obviously very disappointed, as we were thoroughly looking forward to welcoming Shreyas to Emirates Old Trafford.

“Ultimately Shreyas’ long-term fitness is of paramount importance and Lancashire Cricket fully respects the decision.

“We wish Shreyas all the best with the remainder of his recovery, and from the conversations which I have had with the player, believe that this is an arrangement he would be keen to revisit again in the future."

Iyer, though, has said he will play the remaining part of IPL 2021 in UAE, adding the Delhi Capitals team owners will decide on captaincy. Iyer had missed the first part of IPL 2021 before it was suspended in May due to COVID-19 cases within team bubbles.

“My shoulder… yes, I think the healing process is done. Now it’s the last stage of achieving strength and range. So that’s going to take about a month and the training is obviously going on. Other than that, I feel, I will be there in the IPL," Iyer told The Grade Cricketer’s YouTube channel.

“I don’t know about the captaincy, it’s in the hands of the owners. But the team has already been doing well and we are on top and that’s what really matters to me. My main aim and goal to lift the trophy which Delhi has never done before."

Rishabh Pant led DC in Iyer’s absence.

Kanpur: India skipper Ajinkya Rahane confirmed that middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer will make his Test debut in the first Test against New Zealand on Thursday after opener KL Rahul was ruled out of the series due to a muscle strain on left thigh.

Shreyas Iyer should focus on selling mutual funds rather than playing cricket.

not sure he'll do well overseas in Tests but he does have a good FC record

He should do well in subcontinent as long as Jamieson or Wagner doesn't bowl barrage of short pitch stuff on him.

Wrong selection.
Shreyas has some major technical problems and he never look settled on wickets.
He is not made for test cricket. I will be happy if he prove me wrong.

One of the Panchal, Prithwi or Vihari should have been asked to stay back India for this series.
It is time right time to groom Gill as our next middle order batsman in place of Rahane.

Excellent news.

Cant wait for this fraud to flop in grand manner.

I cannot believe how someone with no talent, no skill and and zero ability make it to the national side. He must be related to someone up in BCCI....

He'll do fine I imagine, home conditions in familiar territory... I know people say he is deficient against the short ball but this isn't limited overs cricket where he has to play everything...here he can afford to duck and leave everything short and still get runs

Good luck to him, but I suppose more good luck to him when he tours overseas with that technique.

55* at the moment - playing a steady hand for India.

Best player of spin in world at the moment and still 25 yrs of age. He will be lynchpin of Indian Middle order for next 5 years

He is probably the best player of spin in India at the moment. But he is an equally bad player of short pitch stuff.

He reminds me a lot of Handscomb actually, who is also a good player of spin, but bad against pace bowling because of his poor technique.

Is he that bad against pace? He has got problems against short-pitch bowling but many of our legends like Ganguly had that problem.

I don't think he will succeed in overseas conditions with that unconventional technique, I've got nothing against him. I just don't like unorthodox players in test cricket as their technique will let them down in difficult conditions, unless their name is Steve Smith.

Every country has such players tbh - Iyer for India, Handscomb for Australia, Fawad Alam for Pakistan.

Never heard of this guy but his domestic stats look unreal. Why are people criticising him so much?

Australia has also Labuchane.

He is pretty belligerent in domestic. He did take risks today. But largely played well within himself. Yes his first class reocrds are often ignored because he has been typecast as LOI player.

Don't rate him much but to be fair, most of our batsman average in 30s overseas, so it is not like our so called talented and technically equipped players do any great overseas.

He did played a crucial knock today or else we could have bowled out under 300.

Nowadays it is hard to tell who will make it big who will suck overseas. Agarwal despite a great start to his career in the boxing day Test got progressively worse exposing huge holes in his batting technique. Same with almost all the highly-rated players. Sundar on the other hand was hardly rated as a batsman. Turns out he played better than many specialists.

Add Thakur to that list. His counterattack against England in the last Test turned the game in our favor.

Sundar is good but he will have ups and down too. There is no guarantee of success. Initially, all of our players have started well but only time will tell how big they can make it.

Hence, a player should be considered great only after he has performed over a larger sample and across most conditions

West Indies had
Chanderpaul

I think he should play in asain conditions only excellent player of spin

Shreyas Iyer debut century:

- 16th Indian player on debut
- 3rd Indian on debut vs NZ
- Third oldest (26y 355d)
- Joint fourth fastest (where balls faced details available)
- Joint fourth fastest for India (where balls faced details available)

Brilliant 100. This guy should be persisted for all formats! Maybe even future captain some time... Instead of investing on Pujara & Rahane, they should give maximum chances for this man...

Great innings from Shreyas today . He is indeed a complete cricketer and has that maturity . I hope he is now permanent in all 3 formats

No, he should play in all conditions. In the middle order (No.5 or No.6). Yes he might not look that good against pace, but he can manage if he plays in lower middle order with balls getting old & bowlers getting tired on most occasions! That's how people like Steven Waugh, Hansie Cronje, etc, thrived!

Batting is a multi-dimensioned, multi-skilled art... You are wrong if you think you should counter spin only in Asian Conditions (just like some people think that "art of fast bowling" is useless in Asia!) In fact batting gets tougher against spin at times in Australia, England... on 4th & 5th days with hard cracks coming into play...

Bowlers need to be rotated (you can't play more spinners outside Asia and more pacers in Asia) because they are bowling in only one dimension, but batsmen have to always play different bowlers. Also injury/fatigue doesn't affect as much to batsmen compared to bowlers... In addition to that batsmen always need to continue their rhythm because they won't get a second chance in their batting innings, they should not miss any big match unless they are injured! That's why I felt Rohit, Pant, etc, should not have missed this series...

Shreyas Iyer should be first choice in Test Team from hereon even if it means that one out of Pujara/Rahane has to be kept out...

Ok why you think Steve Smith succeeds with unorthodox technique, because technique is overrated if you don't judge line and length well. Having a good eye and getting into position with eye above ball is more important to be a successful batsmen

I agree except being permanent for all 3 formats. He should just concentrate on test and odi, he seems to have makings of a match winner

No talent? :inzi:
He has a 50+ average in first class cricket. That alone will get him into most national sides.

Good knock by him yesterday. I hope he continues the good run, and does not end up like that Keralite who scored a 300 against England, only to disappear into thin air afterwards.

Good to see your using Steve Waugh in the same sentence of shreyas based upon 1 innings.I Don't watch much Indias games but what from what I seen that's my opinion.
