Virat Kohli - The Mega Discussion

Another important series with an average of around 10 for Virat Kohli.

Master of going missing when needed the most.

Excuses again.
He is alway fatigued in conditions where the ball swings?

To me that's a technical flaw, try to live with it your best batsman is an ftb

An ftb who was so fatigued in the Test and ODI series in ENG (2014), and 70 odd after getting a flat wicket in the only T20I.

Virat isn't half the player Tendulkar was, his aggressive methods wouldn't have worked if he was in the 90s-early 2000s era. The quality of batsmen in India is going down because of IPL and all the money involved.

Can't see that roaring Kohli nowadays. May be he has already achieved what he desired for.

You should have watched him roar when Bumrah got Williamson.

If you were just watching his batting this series there was nothing to roar about!

I have had quite an interest in psychology and Sociology, and it just feels like Kohli is a faker while talking to media sometimes. He tries to give an impression that he has matured a lot and all, but I can still see the disrespect for opposition in his eyes. He thinks he is far superior to Root, Kane and Smith but doesn't admit it publicly. He is a narcissist to his very core. Infact, narcissist people are generally more successful. He has matured to some exctint but just feels like he hasn't completely given up his narcissist nature.

It's because he is burn out and he had to make best use of the little energy remaining in him.

narcissists have been successful in the world. To be a top player, you need to be a bit of narcissist. Nothing wrong with that. Depends what type of narcissism he is diagnosed with.

This guy really needs to some rest but no how he will able to cash runs against WestIndies and Srilanka,
Now comes South Africas Odi team to India so definitely he will cash those runs against rookie attack and people will forget that horrendous tour he had in Newzealand.
Plus IPL is also coming next month.
I hope he realises that pressure has come over his body after playing 300 days a year and take some rest.

He will get back to form. Kohli has this knack of when he loses form, he goes completely missing all through the series. But he gets back to run scoring in the very next test series.

He is a high quality player and has total 11 centuries in SENA. He will come back to form.

Any one doubting that Kohli is a quality player knows nothing about cricket. Kohli is one of the best batsman going around.

It's just that he had the potential to go further and become one of the best ever according to some. But he goes missing to often when the going gets tough.

Now he has away average of :
- 36.35 in England
- 36 in NZ
- 35.61 in West Indies.

Great performance. Wish he could have shown similar level of performance in 50 overs World Cups and World Cup knockouts.

Why are young Indian players so scared of Virat Kohli?

In different interviews i have noticed whenever any of the current young crop of Indian cricketers is asked to choose between Sachin or Kohli, they either pick Kohli or choose not to answer.

Latest culprit being Bumrah who actually plays for MUMBAI but when Yuvraj asked him on Instagram live chat to pick he could not give an answer to it. You play for Mumbai why do afraid of Kohli? He obviously wanted to say Sachin.

Indian players respect their senior teammates which is why they don't bother to compare.

Pandya and Rahul said in it Koffee with Karan because us show ka format kuch waisa tha lol.. Afterall, they had to win hamper.:faf

Trying to create drama where none exists hmm.. if you ask Virat himself he worships Sachin. It is the opinion of the player and too be honest very few Indians don’t like sachin(there are a few)

Yes it's Rayudu. Senior of Kohli :kohli

Amazing this is where Kohli was in 2006.

In 4 years he was a star in India

In 2011, he played and won his ODI world cup.

By 2013-14 he was already the best in the world

It’s all non issue. Which you seem to make one.

Kohli is massive Sachin fan and why would he feel so insecure about him.

Okayyyyy

He is back

India captain Virat Kohli has been compared with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar for a long time now. His consistency in all formats and run-scoring abilities has made Kohli one of the front-runners to challenge Sachin’s towering numbers in international cricket. Kohli’s mastery in chasing totals and nonchalantly hit fast bowlers in limited-overs cricket has made some greats like Ian Chappell compare him with Viv Richards too. Among current cricketers, Kohli has always drawn comparisons with Australia’s Steve Smith. But on Sunday, former Pakistan captain Aamer Sohail added a new chapter in Kohli’s career by comparing him with legendary Pakistan batsman Javed Miandad.

Sohail, who was Pakistan’s one of the most successful openers, said much like Miandad, Kohli’s greatness rubs off on his teammates.

“The most important point for me is that big players break out. They are individually great, but their greatness does not help the team at all. When you talk about Pakistan’s cricket history and its greatness, the first name that comes to mind is Javed Miandad.

“His greatness is still talked about to this day because he used to raise the level of play of the rest of the team. When you stitch a long partnership with him, you used to learn so much, and get inspired that you want to improve more. This is what Kohli has done as well. If you look around Kohli, every player has improved alongside him and this is why Kohli gets the tag of a great player,” Sohail said on his YouTube channel.

Miandad, who played 124 Tests and 233 ODIs in an international career spanning close to two decades, was among the finest batsmen to have represented Pakistan. He scored 8832 runs an average of 52.57 in Test cricket and in ODIs he had 7381 runs at an average of 41.70.

Kohli, on the other hand, has already scored 70 international hundreds and more than 21 thousand international runs – 7240 in Tests, 11867 in ODIs and 2021 in T20Is. The India captain averages over 50 in all three formats of the game.

Sohail also went on to explain the reason behind Kohli’s greatness.

“Let me explain why Virat Kohli has become a great player? When he burst onto the scene, he was flamboyant, aggressive, and liked to team up with life. Very quickly, he realised that I need to separate my professional life with my personal life. That really benefited him.”

India captain Virat Kohli is regarded as one of the best batsmen in the world at the moment. Kohli has dominated over every world-class bowling attack in the world. Be it Australia’s line-up of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon, or South Africa’s attack of Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Imran Tahir - Kohli has managed to find a way to counter some of the best bowlers in the modern-day cricket, and has quickly risen among the ranks.

In a recent interview, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who played opposite Virat Kohli for the first time at the 2008 U-19 World Cup explained the reasons behind Kohli’s meteoric rise. Kohli-led India had won the tournament in 2008, and had also defeated Williamson-led Kiwis in the semifinal.

Speaking on Star Sports’ chat show Cricket Connected, Williamson talked about how Kohli has matured over the years and has also developed the ability to make really good decisions. “You can say that it was only a matter of time before he was making some strong inroads to the full international scene.

“At the moment, leading the way in cricket and setting the standard as a batter and breaking all these records. A lot of that probably has to come down to his maturity, his ability to make very good decisions,” he said.

“Not only is he gifted with his ability and his natural ability, but you’re marrying that up with this constant drive and hunger to improve and just be better day in and day out. Yeah, we are fortunate to play against each other, it’s been great to meet at a young age and follow his progress and journey,” Williamson added.

Kohli and Williamson are known to be good friends and were seen chatting away at the boundary during the 5th and final T20I match between India and New Zealand this year in February, visuals of which went viral during the match. India had already taken a 4-0 lead in the series by then and both the captains were being rested for the dead rubber.

Before India’s tour to New Zealand, the Kiwis had suffered a Test series whitewash in Australia, and Kohli had defended Williamson in a press conference. “I don’t think leadership can always be determined by the results. It’s also about how you can get the team together and get the guys functioning under you as well, which I think Kane has done wonderfully well.

“He has the respect of his teammates and he has the trust of his teammates, is what I can see, and he’s also a very, very smart cricketer,” Kohli had said.

Virat Kohli in high regard. The former cricketer said that the Indian captain is a “rare breed of a cricketer” and one of the best he has ever seen in his life across any format. Sangakkara said Virat Kohli is “phenomenally fit” and admitted to seeing his commitment and dedication first-hand on the field.

The Sri Lankan cricketer further spoke about Virat Kohli’s passion and personality by saying the Indian skipper is not scared to show his emotions on the field. Kumar Sangakkara also said that even though Virat Kohli is an old-fashioned batsman due to his cricketing strokes, the prolific Indian run-scorer is “deadly effective” and “incredibly consistent”. The former cricketer and 2014 T20 World Cup winner added that there is nothing to dislike about Virat Kohli and the batsman is already a great of the game. Moreover, Kumar Sangakkara went on to claim that Kohli has the opportunity to become the greatest batsman after the late Don Bradman.

In a bizarre incident, a petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking the arrest of Indian cricket skipper Virat Kohli and actress Tamannah for promoting online gambling.

In the petition filed by a Chennai-based advocate, the petitioner has sought direction from the MHC to ban the online gambling apps stating that youngsters are getting addicted to it. The petition further said that the online gambling companies are using stars like Virat Kohli and Tamannah to brainwash youngsters and therefore, both should be arrested for it.

He also mentioned the case of a youngster who died by suicide as he couldn't pay back the money he took for online gambling. The petitioner also highlighted the increase in the number of suicide cases lately in Tamil Nadu where youngsters took the step after losing plenty of money in online gambling. The petitioner also said that youngsters borrow money at high-interest rate and commit suicide once they are unable to make profits at these online gambling sites. The petitioner also compared online gaming with the Blue Whale game - that had claimed several lives of youngsters who got addicted to it.

The case has been posted for a hearing on Tuesday.

On the professional front, Virat Kohli is all set to participate in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Over the last few weeks, after staying at home for a period of three months, Indian cricketers started practicing - which hinted at cricket's resumption for the Indian cricketers.

Soon after the International Cricket Council (ICC) postponed the Men's World Twenty20, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the start and the end states for IPL 13. Due to the increase in the number of coronavirus cases in India, the upcoming season will be played in the UAE. The details regarding the tournament will be decided in the IPL Governing Council meeting. As per the initial confirmation, while IPL 2020 will kick off on September 19, it will end on either November 8 or 10.

Virat Kohli, since making his international debut in 2008, has played numerous match-winning knocks batting in different circumstances in all three formats of the game. A couple of his memorable knocks that pop up straightaway are 133 not out off just 86 balls against Sri Lanka in Hobart and unbeaten 100 off just 52 ball -- the faster century by an Indian batsmen -- scored against Australia, while chasing 360 runs in Jaipur. For a player it is always difficult to pick one innings over the other as each one of them hold equal importance in their heart.

However, fans and even experts, for that matter, are not bound by this dilemma and can often be seen picking favourite knocks of different players.

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has now picked the 183 not out Kohli scored against Pakistan in the 2012 Asia Cup as one of his all-time greatest innings.

Gambhir acknowledged that while Kohli has played many unbelievable innings across formats overs the years, the knock against Pakistan was special because it came while India had lost an early wicket while chasing a mammoth 330 runs against a quality Pakistan bowling attack.

"Virat Kohli has played many unbelievable innings across the three formats, but this is one of his greatest innings from all points of view," Gambhir said on Star Sports show 'Best of Asia Cup Watch along'.

He also highlighted that what makes this particular knock all the more special is the fact that Kohli wasn't that experienced in the international cricket and was still trying to make his mark.

"First of all we were chasing 330, then India was 0/1, and then scoring 183 out of the 330 runs, that too against Pakistan, and that time, he was not that experienced too. According to me, I think probably this is one of Virat Kohli's greatest innings, honestly," added Gambhir, who top scored for India in the final of 2011 World Cup.

Due to coronavirus pandemic, the Indian skipper has been away from cricket field for over four months now but will be back in action leading his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore and would hope to take them to their first-ever title win.

Virat Kohli: Sensational ball stopper but an embarrassing serial catch dropper

I was watching highlight package of Rahul's 132 today and just saw Kohli dropping Rahul at the boundary.

Just what is wrong with him?

Him.dropping catches is becoming a norm.

KL Rahul smashed the first century of the 2020 Indian Premier League to propel Kings XI Punjab to a daunting 206 for 3 against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Thursday.

Rahul played the role of sheet anchor, scoring 132 off 69 balls that were laced with 14 boundaries and seven sixes.

However, the right-hander was also given a couple of reprives by none other than Bangalore captain Virat Kohli who dropped a sitter when he was batting on 83.

Trying to smash Dale Steyn’s low full toss, Rahul didn’t get enough to clear the long boundary in Dubai. Kohli moved to his right and seemingly overran a bit. Instead of staying back, he ran around the boundary and then took a step inward. Had he stayed back then he would have probably been at the right place.

Lady luck continued to smile on Rahul when Kohli once again dropped him on 89 an over later, this time off Navdeep Saini.

It was a slower ball to which Rahul got a leading edge as he went for the glory shot. As the ball sailed towards long-off, Kohli once again ran in but spilled it yet again. This was a much easier chance than the previous one. After the error, the RCB skipper wriggled his hand, gesturing that the ball might have been wet due to dew. Rahul ultimately went on to score a scintillating 132 not out off 69 balls.

After the match, Kohli had no qualms in taking the blame for dropping Kings XI Punjab skipper KL Rahul twice, which contributed significantly to their 97-run defeat here on Thursday.

Kohli felt had he not dropped Rahul, who remained unbeaten on 132, twice KXIP would not have been able to go past the 200-run mark. “I have to stand in front and take the brunt of it, not the best day in the office, couple of important chances of KL when he was set and that cost us 35-40 runs at a later stage. Maybe if we restricted them to 180 we wouldn’t have been under pressure from ball one of the chase,” said Kohli at the post-match presentation.

Most drops in IPL last six seasons:

Virat Kohli – 15
Ravindra Jadeja – 14
Robin Uthappa – 12
Harbhajan Singh – 12

“We know exactly where we went wrong and I have to put my hand up and say a couple of important chances went down. There are days when these kind of things happen on the cricket field, they happen and we have to accept them. “We have had a good game (against Sunrisers Hyderabad), we have had a bad game and now it is time to move on and learn from the mistakes we made,” said Kohli.

On sending the young Josh Philippe ahead of himself at number 3, Kohli said: “He has batted at the top of the order for Western Australia and done well in the BBL as well, early days in the tournament so we thought we will maximise his ability and see how we go from there on. We thought we will give ourselves a bit of depth in the middle overs.”

Kohli has always been a serial catch dropper so these stats don't surprise me. If we look for similar stats in international cricket, he'll surely be in top-2 I guess, with the other one being Rahane.

NEW DELHI: Skipper Virat Kohli explained how the Yo-Yo test helped Indian cricketers aim for high-level fitness when Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked him about the mandatory running aerobic fitness routine.

Prime Minister Modi was interacting with fitness experts and influencers from across the country to mark the one-year anniversary of the 'Fit India Movement'. Modi was keen to know what is Yo-Yo test and asked if the captain also has to pass it or he gets spared? "I heard these days there is a Yo-Yo test for the team, what is this test," asked Modi during the virtual interaction.

Kohli, smiling, replied, "This Test was very important from fitness point of view. If we talk about global fitness level, our fitness level is still low compared to other teams and we want to take it up, which is a basic requirement."

The gruelling routine has two sets of cones that are 20 metres apart. Once the beep is sounded, the athlete has to reach the marker on the other side by the time the next beep sounds, turn and get back to where he started before the third beep. The frequency of the beeps gradually increases for the subsequent runs.

Kohli, who is currently in the UAE for the ongoing 13th IPL, said even he has to clear the test to get selected for the India team. "I'm the one who goes to run first and this is the condition that if I fail that I am also not available for selection. It is important to set that culture and it will lead to improvement in overall fitness levels," he said.

The session was attended by sports persons such as Paralympic javelin gold medallist Devendra Jhajharia and woman footballer from Jammu and Kashmir Afshan Ashiq. Also present were actor, model and runner Milind Soman and nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar.

Modi also interacted with Afshan, who hit the headlines in 2017 as a stone pelter in Srinagar. The 25-year-old played as goalkeeper in J&K women's football team and later played in the Indian Women's League in 2019 for FC Kolhapur City.

She also trains youngsters in Srinagar. To encourage her Modi said, "You have done very well in football. Mostly, football fans say 'Bend it like Beckham', but now they will say 'Ace it like Afshan'."

Afshan said that she gets inspiration from former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, eulogised as 'captain cool'. "I do meditation at 5:30 every morning to keep my mind cool. I have learnt a lot from MS Dhoni, he is always calm. I like getting that calmness in my life, it helps to do all work calmly. It helps in balancing mental stress."

Kohli said that better fitness has helped the players, especially fast bowlers, to perform during crucial moments. "In Test cricket, sometimes we get tired. Our fast bowlers are best in the world currently and if they have to put that effort on the fourth and fifth day on the field, they can do it now," he said.

"We always had the skills but when in the crucial moment when the body gets tired and the team needs you, our performance used to dip and our opponents used to win, now because of our fitness, we have been able to capitalise and perform on those crucial moments," he added.

Kohli said that he didn't follow the right diet early in his career and stressed on the need to bring an overall change in lifestyle. "When I started playing, I started having lot of things which were not good from health point of view. So physical fitness and diet had to change. Now life is very hectic, so if we don't keep fitness in sync with our times, we will keep falling behind. If we wouldn't have focussed on our fitness then we would have fallen behind in our sports as well. We can't only depend on our skills as mental strength depends on how fit is the body and mind," the 32-year-old said.

Modi said that he was glad that healthy eating is becoming a part of people's way of living. "Becoming fit is not as difficult as most think. It just requires a little discipline. 'Fitness ki dose, aadha ghanta roz'. Every Indian should play some game or do some fitness activity, be it tennis, badminton, kabaddi. It has to be for at least half an hour," the PM said.

Virat Kohli hasn't crossed 25 runs in his last 8 IPL innings.

The biggest worry is that the most awaited test series is knocking on the door and our two best players are in absolute disastrous form(kohli and bumrah)

Ipl isn't good to get back in form. Domestic cricket 🏏 would do wonders. Do u agree?

Yup playing domestic will surely help, but there's no time for that before the test series, ipl ends nov 10 and we are traveling to aus on 13 th nov

He had a pretty poor New Zealand tour. Probably the lengthiest bad patch he has encountered in his career.

Kohli will bounce back! He is a champ. Will surprise us all in the Aus series.

I daresay the last ball 4 in that super over today would turn the tide for Kohli’s form - it was a crunch moment and it would have given a huge psychological boost to Kohli as this was an emotionally draining game - you heard it here first fellas ....

He played two balls in super over and connected them well in pressure situation. Surely this will help him to get back his form.

will do his confidence the world of good, way too early to in my opinion but with some of the talent knocking on the door now, shaw, gill , rahul, kishaan the pressure was definitely on , commies started getting on to his back , few grumbles amongst the fans, so definitely the win and the feeling of contributing to it at the end will lift him for the next game and the rest of the tournament.

So far in their career, Steve Smith has always been ahead as a test batsmen.. I am more looking forward to watch Prithvi Shaw bat in Aus and maybe Gill...
