Virat Kohli - The Mega Discussion

He’s a greater ODI bat than Sachin for sure.

But leagues below in tests.

So overall Sachin still takes the cake as greatest Indian batsmen considering all formats.

You can't compare ODI'S. Different eras, so many different parametres.
Even in the current generation he is the only one from the fab 4 who plays so many ODI'S.

We should compare what is comparable, that mean test cricket. And he is a great batsman in the league of Root, Williamson, let's see who comes on top.

Kohli will cost India another big tournament and then retire.

What is he is doing right now in tests is just tarnishing his own legacy. He lost his hand eye coordination before Kallis, Sanga, Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting which yields the question ... is he now older than his ICC registered age ?

It's just a rough patch.

He had a couple of good innings against England that could have been converted into 100s.

Losing your hand-eye coordination tends to create a dramatic drop across all formats. Instead, he's still doing well in ODIs and T20Is.

Actually, even with his poor run (only by his standards), I wonder if he still isn't the best batsman across all formats. Who's better than him right now?

Smith, williamson, babar and rohit are doing pretty good right now.

Uttarakhand Police on Friday took a sly dig at the Indian captain Virat Kohli for registering his first-ever consecutive duck in international cricket. Kohli, who looked itching to get back to form after an average Test series with the bat against England, was caught by Chris Jordan off Adil Rashid’s delivery in the third over of Indian innings. India was reduced to 3/2 after England skipper Eoin Morgan opted to bowl first. Citing Kohli’s example to advise drivers against rash driving, Uttarakhand Police came up with a witty tweet soon after India captain’s dismissal for naught in the first T20I in Ahmedabad.

The 32-year-old got out on a duck in an attempt to add quick runs to the scoreboard. Coming in to bat at No.3, Kohli was rapped on the gloves by a Jofra Archer bouncer in the previous over. He tried to take on England leg-spinner Rashid by lofting him inside-out, but ended up lobbing the ball up to Jordan at mid-off. “A helmet is not enough! It is necessary to drive in full consciousness or else you can get out on zero just like Kohli,” Uttarakhand Police’s official Twitter handle wrote.

England secured a comfortable eight-wicket win over India in the first T20I here at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday. The visitors delivered an all-round performance in the match and completely outplayed their opponents. With this victory, the Eoin Morgan-led side has gained a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

After being asked to bat first, India only managed to score 124 runs from the allotted 20 overs. Shreyas Iyer (67) smashed a sensational half-century to rescue India from early blows but England kept taking wickets at regular intervals to restrict the hosts to 124/7.

Chasing a target of 125 runs, England witnessed a brilliant start with both openers, Jos Buttler and Jason Roy, scoring regular boundaries. From England, Roy was the highest run-getter with 49 runs. England chased down the target with 27 balls remaining.

Lots of posts about keeping Kohli out of the team or to take back his captaincy going on. Lot of it is happening as a sudden reaction and very little thought given to a long term view.

People asking for Kohli's head are basing it on two events.
1) Ind-Aus 1st test - Captained by Kohli and India team got bundled out for 36 and lost the test. Then Rahane comes on and India wins the test series.
Automatically, the connection is made that Kohli loses while Rahane wins. Kohli who is a very strong character suddenly has a chink in the armour that everyone wants to exploit. While it is true that Rahane achieved very well with so little of resources, it doesn't mean that Kohli couldn't have done so.
In fact, Kohli has achieved it in the home series whereas Rahane didn't do much. Consistently performing over the years is what has got Virat his talismanic status. His replacement likewise has to be a person with a larger than life persona with similar achievement and consistency. Otherwise the new captain will find it difficult to matchup the expectations and adulation. So in Tests, there is no chance of Rahane replacing Kohli unless it is voluntary.

2) For T20, now again this talk of removing Kohli from the team has started. Various reasons are being mentioned such as it is a game of big hitters and Kohli has no place.
Yes, get big hitters like Pant/Pandya/Rohit/Tewatiya in the team but don't discount Kohli. Look at the innings of Shreyas Iyer in 1stT20; he played all proper cricketing shots and went on to score the highest runs and saved India from an under 100 score. Pant and Pandya started well and then went for the unconventional shots at wrong time.
Even England which bats deep and has Malan, Buttler, Stokes, Roy and Bairstow do have Eoin Morgan and Kohli has achieved far more than Eoin Morgan as a batsman and deserves his place and captaincy.
Kohli recent poor form is a vicious cycle and it is nothing new. Even the great Tendulkar went through this bad patch and his return to form was an even more solid run afterwards. Problem with Kohli was that he tried to breakout of this cycle in the last T20 by batting uncharacteristically aggressive so early in his innings. Whereas all needed to do was be patient and get some runs against his name by being his usual self. Leave the hoicking to the WI or Jason Roys or to the Pants and Pandyas. With one good innings, Kohli will be back like so many other quality batsmen have done previously.

IMO, shouldn't rule him out. It will be a very wrong wish to have.

Virat Kohli become first batsman ever to complete 3000 runs in T20I

26 50s in 86 games, Avg of over 50 and a strike rate of almost 140. Shows clearly you can maintain both nice average and good strike rate at the same time if you really are a good player.

Also during the match today I saw some people were not happy when he was going for his 50 and wanted to finish the match. They don't know what a 50 means to such players who have set their standards high. :inti

Good for India he is back in form. Looked better towards the end. Most important thing today was Kohli getting back in form.

Ricky Ponting actually started to decline by the age of 33-34 onwards, you should check out his averages in his last 5-6 years, it was around 39-40 which is pretty bad if you compare it to his career average of 54. At one point he was averaging 60 but his performances dipped so bad at the end that the average fell to 54.

Kohli too is human. It is impossible to maintain the same kind of consistency forever.

So he has 2 more years before decline.

good 50 today, but I think he still didnot get back his previous flow yet. But I am sure that will happen very soon

India will have to decide, do they need more than 1 anchor in Indian team?

Kohli is the best anchor in the world and India don't need another. So, ultimately Jadeja can replace Shreyas over a long run once he is back.

Rohit( hitter)
Kishan/KL( hitter)
Kohli( anchor)
Pant( hitter)
SKY( will see but hitter)
Pandya ( hitter)
Jadeja( hitter)

This should be top 7. If any injury happens, Shreyas comes in. He is an achor.

It is a good list and very close to Yesterday's team.
I think you said 7 but named 8 players (Kishan / KL).
We will have to choose between SKY and Kishan.

Also, you left space for 4 tailenders (bowlers). Why have 4 more bowlers when the top 7 already has Jadeja and Pandya. Maybe 2 pacers and add Chahal.

Team India captain Virat Kohli on Sunday became the first batsman to score 3000 runs in T20 Internationals. Kohli slammed a six on Chris Jordan’s delivery to finish the match in style and reached the iconic milestone. India won the match by 7 wickets as Kohli remained not out on 73.

He also became the third captain in international cricket to score 12000 runs as a captain. During the second T20I against England, Kohli joined legendary captains Ricky Ponting and Graeme Smith in the elite list. The Indian captain reached the milestone after scoring his 17th run.

Ponting, who led Australia to twin ODI World Cup glories in 2003 and 2007 slammed 15440 runs as captain in international cricket. While Smith scored 14878 runs as South Africa’s skipper.

Kohli also overtakes his limited-overs deputy Rohit Sharma to score the most 50 plus scores in T20I cricket. Kohli slammed his 26th fifty in the shortest format with a six on Chris Jordan’s delivery. Earlier, both players were tied at 25 half-centuries.

The Indian captain shared a 94-run stand alongside debutant Ishan Kishan for the second wicket. Kishan became the second Indian batsman to slam a half-century on a debut match. The southpaw also reached his fifty with a six before getting dismissed by Adil Rashid on 54.

Ahead of the match, Kohli was facing a lot of scrutiny after registering back-to-back ducks in international cricket for the first time. The 32-year-old was dismissed by Adil Rashid on duck in the opening T2oI while Ben Stokes got the better of him in the fourth Test match

Meanwhile, on Sunday, India restricted England for just 164/6 in 20 overs. Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur were the pick of the bowlers for India as they claimed two wickets. While Bhuvneshwar and Chahal picked a wicket each.

For England, opener Jason Roy scored 46 off 35 balls while skipper Eoin Morgan made 28 off 20 balls.

At 130 for four in the 15th over, England looked well in course of reaching a near 200-run target but the Indian bowlers bowled brilliantly to concede just 34 runs in the last five overs.

It is good to have options at top and we have to figure out who is better between two.

Kishan is a type of batsman we need in T20s at top but his technique is not as tight as KLR. If Ishan has a few failures, KL will take over him. It is a very nice and healthy competition to have.

I don't have faith on Pandya or Jadeja's bowling in T20s. Jadeja in T20 is a very average bowler but with bat, his hitting skills has improved quite a lot in last few years and he can play the role of Shreyas but also give 2-3 overs with bowl. 6 bowlers are mandatory in T20s and ODIs.

EXCLUSIVE: A captain knows his days are numbered, but at the at the moment Virat Kohli has a pretty firm handle on the dressing room: David Gower

India kicked off their four-Test campaign against England at home on a losing note, before bouncing back hard to win the series 3-1.
Team India found themselves in a similar kind of situation in the T20I series as well. They lost the opening T20I by 8 wickets, but made a remarkable comeback to trounce England by 7 wickets in the second match to level the series 1-1. Captain Virat Kohli once again anchored a chase to perfection and became the first
player to cross 3000 T20I runs in the process.
Will India go on and beat England to clinch the T20I series from here?

Timesofindia.com caught up with former England captain and batting legend David Gower, who played 117 Tests and 114 ODIs, scoring over 11,000 international runs, for a special chat.
Gower spoke about India's recent win against England at home, England's weakness against spin, the ongoing T20I series vs the English and the impact it can have on the T20 World Cup later this year, the captaincy debate in Indian cricket.

Excerpts...

India won a Test series in Australia recently under Ajinkya Rahane. That started some talk again about split captaincy in Indian cricket (https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket), like what England is doing. Your take on that...

I don't really think I'm qualified to speak (about that) because I think you have to look into the dynamics of the dressing room. Rahane, for instance, has always said that he doesn't want to take over from Virat. He said this in public anyway that he's very happy to stand in if he's needed. But he doesn't want to take over. And if that is the feeling in the dressing room as a whole, maybe the best man to ask is someone like my old friend Ravi Shastri.
With Ravi, who is keeping a senior eye on events as head coach, he will know what the feeling is. A captain knows his days are numbered but at the moment Virat has a pretty firm handle on the dressing room.

Whatever happens he will go down as one of the greats of the game when it comes to batting. While history will recognize him as successful captain there will always be some question marks regarding his captaincy.

Yes there are always shortcomings in every players life.
Would love to hear more from you about the question marks

People keep forgetting he has a higher gear after he is settled. He strikes over 200 in later parts

Most runs in last five overs in a T20I for India:

58 (16) - Yuvraj Singh vs Eng, 2007

49 (20) - Virat Kohli vs WI, 2016

49 (17) - Virat Kohli vs Eng, Today

Fantastic batsman. Definitely one of the all-time greats. As he's gotten older, he's playing more and more of these quality innings in tough batting conditions. This was my main criticism of his batting but he's cleared all doubts.

India are going to be half the team when he retires. None of their other batsman are even half as good.

What this proves is you're a poor judge of batting talent. Good that you've accepted it now :afridi1

So some light at the end of your current tunnel of doom and gloom?

He was very good in the second match and was fantastic in this one. Some of the shots he played in the closing overs were sumptuous. Bouncing back to his best after an average Test series with the bat. He is of course always a solid captain.

This is the order of current Indian batsman:-

Kohli
Rohit
Pujara
Pant
Rahul
Pandya

Most international fifties for India:

Sachin Tendulkar - 164 in 782 innings
Rahul Dravid - 145 in 599 innings
Virat Kohli - 112 in 477 innings
Sourav Ganguly - 108 in 523 innings

Is Pandya is our 6th best bat? Really?

It should be Mayank but he is not playing any format for India in best XI. While Pandya is playing LOIs for us and has played test cricket too. He will be considered for England series too.

Shreyas Iyer has not been selected yet for tests and is an inferior LOI player than Pandya. Rahane is a specialist test captain and doesn't play other formats. Pujara is there because he has been brilliant in tests averaging 47. I think that covers all. Gill debuted only two months ago.

Records broken by Virat Kohli tonight:

- Most T20is runs as captain.
- Most T20is fifties as captain.
- Most runs in full members T20i series.
- Most runs as captain in a T20i series.

21741 - Sachin Tendulkar
18423 - Kumar Sangakkara
17386 - Mahela Jayawardene
13757 - Sanath Jayasuriya

13000 - Virat Kohli*

Most runs in a T20I series (full member teams)

231 VIRAT KOHLI v Eng 2021 (5 inngs)
224 KL Rahul vs NZ 2020 (5)
223 Colin Munro v WI 2018 (3)

Virat Kohli broke multiple records as India posted their highest total against England in T20Is. Opening the batting for the first time in this series, Kohli slammed an unbeaten 80 to lead India to a mammoth 224 for 2 after being invited to bat first by England captain Eoin Morgan in the series-deciding 5th T20I in Ahmedabad.

In the process, Kohli became the highest run-scorer by a captain in T20Is and also went past New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson to register most fifty-plus scores as a captain in T20Is.

This was Kohli’s 28th fifty in T20Is and 12th one as captain in 45 matches.

cap_kohli_1616254569058.PNG

Kohli went past Australia captain Aaron Finch to register most runs as skipper in T20Is.

Kohli opened the batting with Rohit Sharma as India decided to play an extra bowler by dropping KL Rahul from the top.

The move proved to be a great one for India as India got off to a flying start. Rohit and Kohli put on 94 runs together.

Rohit did the bulk of the scoring in their partnership as Kohli was more than happy to enjoy a sensational display of stroke-making from the other end.

Rohit, who was rested for the first two games and did not get much in the next two, enhanced his reputation of a big match player on Saturday. Most of his five sixes were his trademark shot, the seemingly effortless pull over deep square leg.

Also a treat to the eye were his rasping straight drives off a seriously quick Mark Wood in his first over. Kohli too pulled Wood into the stands, a shot that got him fully pumped up. It was not entirely a surprise that Rohit got to his fifty with a maximum before playing one on to his stumps off Stokes.

As Kohli paced his innings beautifully at the other end, he had the company of a supremely confident Suryakumar, who carried on from where he left in his debut game.

The Mumbai batsman further increased the intensity of the innings with two consecutive sixes off leggie Adil Rashid. Then he toyed with pacer Jordan with three fours in a row with his scoop shot reminding of his exploits in the IPL. That over went for 19, taking India to 133 for one in 12 overs.

Rahane is a dud that acts as a star batsman. I'd rather have Prithvi shaw with his flawed technique bat in the test middle order. He has fooled many too many times and it's time to move on.

He played Rashid carefully and put his ego aside. Top marks for that. He is still the numero uno in world cricket when all formats are considered.

Virat Kohli sets sight on Tendulkar, Ponting's records as India eye winning start in England ODIs

Indian skipper and batting maestro Virat Kohli has set his sight on Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting's records as Team India is eyeing a winning start against Eoin Morgan's England in the 3-match ODI series.

virat kohli, Sachin tendulkar, india vs england, kohli record, kohli captaincy, Virat Kohli sets sight on Tendulkar, Ponting's records | Photo Credit: APKEY HIGHLIGHTSIndian skipper and batting maestro Virat Kohli will hope to enjoy a record-fest outing in the England ODI seriesVirat Kohli-led Team India will play three ODIs against Eoin Morgan's EnglandTeam India led by skipper Virat Kohli will play the series opener on Tuesday at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune
After tormenting the England bowlers in the recently concluded T20I series against the Eoin Morgan-led side, skipper Virat Kohli will look to continue his sublime run in the 50-over format when India take on the Three Lions in the first One Day International (ODI) on Tuesday. The Kohli-led side will resume their white-ball rivalry with England in the final leg of the limited-overs series. Team India will play three ODIs against England in their upcoming home assignment.

Kohli, who has hit a purple patch for Team India is expected to lead the Asian giants from the front in the three-match ODI series against the World Champions. Known for smashing batting and captaincy records across all formats of the gentlemen's game, skipper Kohli will hope to match Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's incredible feat in the 50-over format when the charismatic leader of Team India takes the field against England on Tuesday.

Embracing a century drought on the international circuit, Kohli last notched up a ton in 2019 against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. It has been more than a year since Kohli slammed a century in the 50-over format. Interestingly, the talismanic batsman only needs a century to overtake Tendulkar's tally of Indian batters with the most number of tons scored on home soil in the 50-over format.

If Kohli gets to end his century drought in the 1st ODI at Pune, the Indian run-machine can also surpass Ponting's feat of scoring the most centuries (22) as captain in ODIs. Both Ponting and Kohli share the top spot with most centuries scored as captain on the international circuit.

The Indian skipper came close in terms of shattering Ponting's record. In his last innings, skipper Kohli remained unbeaten on 80 off 52 balls to help India thrash England in the T20I series decider. The Man of the Series in the England T20Is amassed 231 runs in 5 innings for Team India.

India captain Virat Kohli kept everyone waiting for that elusive international hundred after he got out for 56 in the first ODI against England in Pune but that didn’t mean he fell short of adding yet another massive record to his list.

Kohli on Tuesday, became the fastest to score 10,000 international runs across formats on home soil bettering former Australia captain Ricky Ponting's record.

Kohli got to the landmark when he scored his fifty in the series opener. The India captain now has 10002 runs in international cricket on home soil in 195 innings at an average of 61.74.

Ponting had taken 219 innings to score 10000 runs across formats on home soil.

The third in the list and also the only other Indian apart Kohli, is the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

Sachin had taken 223 innings to reach the milestone.

Mahela Jayawardena, Kumar Sangakkara, and Jacques Kallis are the only other cricketers to have registered more than 10000 runs in international cricket on home soil but none of them had done it in less than 200 innings like Kohli.

Kohli, who hasn’t scored a century for India for 487 days now, started his innings on a positive note. He negated the threat of leg-spinner Adil Rashid and went after the likes of Ben Stokes to carry on the good work with Shikhar Dhawan after a solid opening partnership between the latter and Rohit Sharma.

Kohli put on 105 runs for the second wicket with Dhawan before providing a simple catch to Moeen Ali off Mark Wood completely against the run of play.

Dhawan too missed his century as he was out for 98.

Earlier, England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss and asked India to bat first.

India handed debuts to Krunal Pandya and Prasidh Krishna and decided to play KL Rahul at No.5 in place of Rishabh Pant.

India have won the Test and T20I series against England.

'He is somebody who can’t take a loss very well': Karthik says Virat Kohli’s competitive nature rubbing off on teammates

India vs England: Karthik says Kohli isn’t the only one who wears his heart of his sleeve and that the Indian team is filled with players who are aggressive in their own ways.

Wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik believes the aggressive and competitive nature of India captain Virat Kohli is such that not only does it have a positive effect on the team but it even rubs off on his teammates. Karthik, who has played a decent amount of cricket under Kohli, including the 2019 World Cup, feels Kohli isn’t the only one in the team who wears his heart of his sleeve and that the team is filled with players who are aggressive in their own ways.

"We speak a lot about Kohli because of his antiques, his body language, but there are quite a few intense characters there. Hardik Pandya, you see he’ll be chirping all the way, he is somebody who just doesn’t want to let go," Karthik said on Sky Sports.

"You see a Rohit Sharma, he’s a very quiet guy but plays with so much aggression. Very aggressive but might not show it with his body language but he wants to win everything. Bhuvneshwar Kumar… you go speak to him and he is somebody who can’t take a loss very well. So you’ve got all these characters. Kohli is at the forefront with his body language, he’s obviously the captain who leads from the front."

On India’s 66-run win on Tuesday, Karthik said it was a special effort by the hosts to pull the match back from a point where England seemed likely to win the match, and with some overs to spare. Chasing 318, England were cruising at 135/0 in the 15th over, with Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow taking the attack to India. But from there, India staged a spirited fightback picking up 10 wickets for less than 120.

"If you remember, Virat Kohli said at the toss. If there’s one thing he wants to do, it’s to try and win the first game and not always come back in a series. That’s exactly what he’s done. I think this Indian team believes it can win from any situation. 14.2 overs, 135 for no loss and from there just to get them all out in the next 116 runs takes a special effort," Karthik added.

"Out of the 10 wickets, nine fell to fast bowlers so there must be something they must be doing right because England couldn’t get many wickets in the middle but India kept chipping away."

Australia - 59.95
Sri Lanka - 69
England - 61.08
South Africa - 41.75
Ireland - 34 (one game)
Netherlands - 12 (one game)
Pakistan - 5.5 (four games)

Surprisingly that 41.75 av against SAF in such a stellar career, not a blot but still abnormal. For a lesser batsmen that figure is just fine.

It would be hard to swallow this fact but India captain Virat Kohli last scored a hundred in international cricket 488 days back. Kohli last scored a ton while donning the national team’s jersey during India’s first-ever pink-ball Test against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata in November 2019. Since then, a lot of water has been passed under the bridge but the wait for Kohli’s elusive 71st century in international cricket. Despite not doing much wrong, Kohli, who has made a habit of scoring centuries in the last few years, hasn’t touched the coveted three-figure mark.

On Friday, the 32-year-old once again looked in supreme touch before getting dismissed against the run of play at the score of 66 during India’s second ODI against England in Pune. Speaking at the post-match conference, Kohli answered the query in his own inimitable style about the long-wait for a hundred. “I never played for hundreds in my life, probably why I ended up getting so many in such a short while,” Kohli said after India lost the second ODI by six wickets against England.

“It’s more important for the team to win. If I get a three-figure score and the team doesn’t win, it means nothing,” he added.

The right-handed batsman, who is six short of Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI world record of 49 centuries, has been on 43 centuries since August 14, 2019. It means that he has gone over one-and-a-half years without an ODI ton.

Although he is averaging a decent 45.85 and has eight fifties in 14 matches in the period, a century remains elusive. He has come close to scoring a hundred on a couple of times, 89 and 85.

On Friday, he fell for 66, his fourth successive half-century in ODIs. While he scored two fifties in the last two ODIs in Australia — 89 and 63, he also made a 56 in the first ODI against England at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Tuesday.

Kohli’s last century in ODI came on August 14, when he made 114 not out against West Indies in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad.

In over eight months leading up to that century, from January 1 to August 14, 2019, he had scored five centuries in 22 innings. That was a period when he was tipped to go past Tendulkar’s record of most centuries in ODIs very soon.

Prior to that phase, Kohli had scored six centuries in the 2018 calendar year, in 14 matches. He also got six centuries in 26 ODIs in 2017 and made three tons in 10 matches in 2016.

On Friday though, Kohli joined an exclusive club, becoming only the second batsman after Australia’s Ricky Ponting to score over 10,000 runs while batting at the No.3 position.

India captain Virat Kohli came out to lead India for his 200th international match on Sunday as his side meets England in the ODI series decider. The right-handed batsman was named as India captain in January 2017 after MS Dhoni stepped down from the role.

Throughout his career so far, Kohli has captained India in 60 Tests, and 45 T20Is, and on Sunday, he will be captaining the team in his 95th ODI.

Overall, Kohli is third on the list of players who have captained India in most international matches. Only MS Dhoni, who captained India in 332 matches, and Mohammed Azharuddin who captained India in 221 matches, are ahead of Kohli in the list.

Kohli, Dhoni, and Azharuddin are the only three Indian captains to lead the team in 200 or more international matches. Sourav Ganguly (196 matches as captain) and Kapil Dev (108 matches as captain) are 4th and 5th on the list.

Meanwhile, Kohli-led India were asked to bat again in the 3rd ODI as England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bowl. Speaking after the toss, Kohli admitted that he would have elected to bowl as well.

Jesus it's been that long.

491 days is not correct way to look at things as there was hardly any cricket in 2020. He is still batting well but somehow not able to convert 50s into 3 digit score. Just 1 century and flood gates will open.

Virat Kohli Became The First Cricketer To Win 2 ICC WC-T20 Man of the Tournament Awards in the History of Cricket.

This is the Bat Virat Kohli used in Wc T20 2016 and IPL and Virat was the Leading Run-Scorer in Both the Tournaments.

Now this is set me thinking that perhaps he should revert to using this bat in IPL'21. get that 100 and open the floodgates

It's taken years of hard work and dedication for Virat Kohli to become a top batsman of today's generation. Starting off as a 19-year-old on 2008 when he first played for India, Kohli would have to wait for three years before breaking into the Test team. However, from there, Kohli only kept climbing higher.

The unbeaten 133 in Hobart where he took on Lasith Malinga or the career-best 183 against Pakistan shortly after enhanced his reputation as one of India's promising young batsmen, which today has transformed into him becoming not only the best all-format batsman of today's era but also the captain of the Indian cricket team.

Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan, who has played alongside Kohli during the latter's younger days, recalled his first impression of the batsman. Pathan harked back to the time Kohli had began playing the IPL and remembered how the batsmen would enjoy himself to the fullest. However, having said that, Pathan mentioned that despite everything, Kohli would never take his focus off cricket.

"Whenever I used to see Virat Kohli in the IPL, I only saw one player. Someone who was young, has reached a certain level and is now enjoying himself on and off the field. The next morning when you opened the newspaper, he was everywhere," Pathan said in a video shared by Star Sports on Twitter. "But he never sidelined cricket, and always kept his focus. That's why you see Virat Kohli has become such a special player. It shows his commitment to the game."

Shortly after leading India to Under-19 World Cup glory in 2008, Kohli made his India debut, opening the batting in an ODI series against Sri Lanka. In the fourth match of the series, Kohli registered his maiden half-century for India, scoring 54. Kohli would have to wait another 10 matches to score his first century for India, a knock of 107 also against Sri Lanka in Kolkata. In the 2011 World Cup opener, Kohli scored a hundred against Bangladesh, his first WC ton.

However, it was from late 2013 that Kohli really entered a different league. He scored a record-breaking century against Australia in an ODI Jaipur off 52 balls, registering the fastest ODI century by an Indian. From there, Kohli's stocks grew and he went on to become one of the finest batsmen of his generation, winning the ICC ODI Player of the Year award in 2012, 2017 and 2018. Kohli also holds the world record for being the fastest batsman to 8000, 9000, 10000, 11000 and 12000 runs in ODI cricket.

Kohli is mentally weak player and lacks temperment. Chasing small totals against weak bowling sides in dead rubber is easy. He choked under pressure in CT match against Pak. He needs to score in tough situations like Umar Akmal.

Ouch

On This Day in 2014 an unstoppable Virat Kohli was adjudged the Man of the Tournament of the T20 World Cup.

Virat Kohli named Wisden Almanack’s ODI cricketer of the 2010s

One cricketer has been named for each of the decades between 1971 and 2021, with India captain Virat Kohli taking the award for the 2010s. He made more than 11,000 runs in the ten-year stretch, averaging over 60 and scoring 42 hundreds. The decade began with him winning the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011, and he added a Champions Trophy title two years later, top scoring in the final. In five global ICC 50-over tournaments in the decade, Kohli and India never fell before the semi-final stage.

Muttiah Muralitharan was named the ODI Cricketer of the 2000s. He helped Sri Lanka make the World Cup final in 2011 and claimed 335 wickets in the decade, more than any other bowler has in a single decade.

Sachin Tendulkar was named the ODI Cricketer of the 1990s. He revolutionised the role of the opener in this period, starting with a pyrotechnic 49-ball 82 in his first innings at the top of the order against New Zealand in March 1994. In 1998, he made nine ODI hundreds, more than any other batsman in a single calendar year ever has.

For the 1980s, Kapil Dev was the cricketer to take the award. His most famous moment in that decade was the catch to dismiss Viv Richards in the 1983 World Cup final, giving India a momentous upset against a West Indies team gunning for a third straight title. He also claimed more wickets than any other in the decade, and scored at the highest strike-rate of any batsman with more than 1000 runs.

It’s Richards himself who claimed the prize in the 1970s, the first decade of ODI cricket. West Indies were the dominant side of the format’s early years, with Richards’ century in the 1979 Cricket World Cup final giving them a second successive triumph.

Well Deserved.
No one came close to Virat in ODI's this decade. AB might have given him a fair competition but his decision to retire from international cricket made sure that no one was there to compete with Virat at the very top.

One of the greatest batsmen ever produced. Hardworking and passionate about improving and raising the bar all the time. Indeed is lucky to play with ATG Indian team which helped him to achieve his goals easily.

'There is no comparison between Virat and Sachin': Pakistan great Mohammad Yousuf picks between Kohli and Tendulkar

The debate surrounding the comparison between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli is proving to be a never-ending one. Tendulkar and Kohli have the record to show that they have been the best Indian batsmen of their respective areas, and while the former batsman holds almost every batting record that there is, Kohli has carved his own path in terms of being the greatest Indian batsman of the current generation.

Former Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf, who played a lot of cricket against Tendulkar, has rated both stars of Indian cricket, and while he is all praise of Kohli, Yousuf feels Tendulkar belongs to a different class altogether.

"He (Kohli) has done it and no matter how much we praise him it's less. But at same time, I think there is no comparison between Virat and Sachin. Tendulkar was a different class altogether. He scored 100 international hundreds and keep in mind the era he played in and the bowlers he played against," PTI quoted the former Pakistan batsman as saying in an interview.

However, having said that, Yousuf has no shortage of admiration for Kohli, saying the India captain is at a stage in his career from where he can go to achieve more greatness in his career. Kohli is one of the top batsmen in the world, right up there with the likes of Kane Williamson, Babar Azam and Steve Smith and Yousuf expects him to achieve a lot more before he's done.

"Kohli is only 32 and this is the age at which top batsmen hit prime and it is only a matter of time before he starts getting hundreds again. To achieve what he has already achieved is formidable and to me, scoring 70 Test and One-day International hundreds (by Kohli) is extreme," the former Pakistan batsman explained.

I always compare Sachin and Kohli like MJ and Lebron
And Like Jordan says:You cannot determine a greater player cross generation. Bill Russel has won more championships than Jordan. Jack Nicklaus has won more majors than Tiger Woods. It's an unfair parallel when comparing across eras. Playing against different types of players, different tournaments, equipment technology. How Kohli would fare against Wasim and McGrath is pure conjecture. Same way how Sachin would fare against cricketers who are generally playing at top tier fitness levels and with the benefit of modern technology and strategies. is pure conjecture.
The only thing we can compare is how much impact each has had on the game they played. We can only say they are the greatest of their respective generations but comparing cross generations is always going to be difficult.
