Mohsin Naqvi wants to use computers to help in selecting the best teams, so we decided to do our part.

We decided to put two of the smartest AI models, ChatGPT and Gemini, to the ultimate test: picking the ideal Pakistan XI for the second Test against Bangladesh.

Here’s the lineup they came up with. Spoiler alert: no robots were harmed in the making of this team!

This is what we got from ChatGpt:

1. Abdullah Shafique - Has shown promise as an opener and should be given a consistent run.
2. Imam-ul-Haq - Solid at the top of the order and in good form.
3. Azhar Ali - Brings stability to the middle order and has experience in subcontinental conditions.
4. Babar Azam (Captain) - The backbone of Pakistan’s batting lineup and an essential player in any conditions.
5. Saud Shakeel - In good form and has shown the ability to build an innings.
6. Mohammad Rizwan (Wicketkeeper) - An aggressive batsman and reliable behind the stumps.
7. Agha Salman - Provides a solid all-round option with his off-spin and middle-order batting.
8. Faheem Ashraf - A seam-bowling all-rounder who adds balance to the team.
9. Shaheen Afridi - The spearhead of the pace attack, capable of taking wickets with the new ball.
10. Hasan Ali - Offers experience and variety to the pace attack.
11. Abrar Ahmed - A mystery spinner who could be crucial on spin-friendly pitches, especially against Bangladesh.

This is what we got from Gemini:

* Muhammad Huraira
* Saim Ayub
* Babar Azam (Captain)
* Abdullah Shafique
* Mohammad Rizwan (Wicketkeeper)
* Saud Shakeel
* Shan Masood
* Naseem Shah
* Khuram Shahzad
* Mir Hamza
* Shaheen Afridi

Chatgpt isn't even updated properly unless you switch to their new model. So no wonder it's suggesting azhar Ali not realising the dude is a dinosaur now.

As for Gemini, to be completly fair, it has chosen the best possible combination if you factor in stats + records + current playing 11. Considering stats wise babar has the best win/loss average in 2023 as captain and kamran ghulam does not have significant data.

But that's the issue, Ai isn't a human being, it can't determine Qualitative data only quantitative. Which is why if Naqvi is relying on ai then Allah hafiz pakistan ka

I would play Kamran instead of Saim at number 3. 11 would be

Huraira
Shan
Kamran
Babar
Saud
RIzwan
Salman
Abrar
Naseem
Khurram
Hamza

Ai best batters list for odi of all time

1) Ryan ten doeshant
2) Shubman Gill
3) Virat kohli
4) Babar Azam
5) Malan
6) Bevan
7) De villers
8) Darly mitchell
9) Van der dussan
10) Jonathan trott

🤣🤣🤣🤣. I'm guessing Gemini pulled this from cricinfo stats or ICC stats since the engine is incapable of analysing anything qualtitively lol.

Naw, the thing about chatgpt was that It was the first official consumer based ai language model in the world since before that all other ai models were targeted for b2b and used in things like video games, or apps etc.

Chatgpt was a game changer but their model was behind, For example before 2023, they fetched data from it's own database which was decades behind Google, and their last known knowledge in 2024 was that of 2022 and not beyond that.

Since then they've improved but ever since Meta Ai and Gemini came in, Chatgpt just lagged behind since meta and gemini thanks to google and favebooks large database can update every day and since meta and Google are bigger, they got more employees and close 15,000 employees updating the ai language model daily, which openai can't afford to do due to lack of resources.

Gemini and meta Ai as a result are just superior models now and chatgpt is outdated, it'll quickly fade away and become a MySpace very soon lol.

But the thing is, AI will always be limited compared to human brain power as it lacks the ability of critical human thinking. It'll give you qualitative results sure.

But the reason gemini and meta ai are telling me Ryan ten doeshant is the best odi batter of all time is because of the average, it's incapable of critically thinking that 64 avg is not viable metric.

Honestly I don't know what stupider, naqvi relying on ai or the ai itself trying to make qualitative human decisions.

Azhar Ali may not be a bad selection. LOL. He was very good on flat pitches.

He was like Pujara. Could bat opposition out of the game.

This isn't 2015 anymore. Azhar is a dinosaur now and chatgpt is suggesting a retired player to come back lol

Even a retired Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, or even Misbah may hang around better than likes of Abdullah and Saim.

Anyway, Azhar is unlikely to return. This is just hypothetical.

No lol, I saw yk and misbah play in the chacha league with Australia, India, Sa and Emgland.

They ain't hanging around with 140kph pacers bowling at them now or clearing the boundaries even. Which is understandable. They old as hell now.

Maybe it's a hint for PCB!

to be honest, even at this age, i think Misbah, Younis, Azhar, Sarfraz, can play spin better than our King batter(s).

I asked chatgpt to recommend 5 PCB chairmans for Pakstan...

  • Ehsan Mani
  • Ramiz Raja
  • Wasim Akram
  • Najam Sethi
  • Shahid Afridi

And ChatGPT also realized that Mohsin Naqvi is not suitable for this post, lol.

AI is a language model, it has no underlying concept of reality or an independent understanding of the problem. So the answers will always sound correct but they have zero predictive power.

Use AI for analysing the stats and asking it to crunch or visualise a lot of data. But it cant be used to do selections. Hope PCB doesnt get caught in buzzwords and use AI in places where its not designed to be used

Can't believe a few people can't even digest AI now. Only because Babar is there and as the Captain. :)

Current data models are always a bit outdated, with the latest data they are trained from around April 2023. This means they’re not catching the newest updates on player performance or availability. Hence why you see Azhar Ali there as model likely doesn’t know he has retired.

For picking cricket players, especially in Pakistan, having models tailored to the local context could make a big difference.

The real issue for Pakistani selectors isn’t just nepotism; it’s more about a “punting culture.” This means there’s a lack of clear guidelines and pathways for player development and selection. Selectors often get swayed by current trends or flavor of the day, favoring players who look good on the spot or perform well in short-term events like the PSL.

In mature countries, Pakistani openers would be Abid Ali (with fast tracked rehabilitation) and potentially Sahibzada Farhan who has done his due.

While a purely data-driven model wouldn’t be perfect, it could offer a more consistent and objective way to select players.

Gemini still selected a good team TBH. It was not that bad except of 1-2 guys. Chatgpt was bad because it is not really updated. It was just a fun thing to do otherwise there is nothing that can replace Humans in these kinds of matters. Only data based selection is not enough.
